This is quite a useful assessment of Tolstoy and the underlying inspiration and motivation for his work - and particular, "Resurrection". The novel clearly has on two interwoven themes, one a love story and the other a devastating expose of the dysfunctional Russian justice system and the state and social system in which it operated. It is this second theme which Garnett examines.
