From sacrifice and torture, from the imperial reign of great Roman Catholicism to the devastating take over of the Ottomans, Albania was tossed around for hundreds of years up until today. When the Ottoman Empire collapsed, a new country rose to power with new political ideals. This inevitably reset Albanians back to square one of eternal suffering.

Rrno Vetem per me Tregue, a war book written by Zef Pllumi, is a book written regarding the Communist Era (1944) and how it had affected Albania and the neighboring countries. This book is an autobiography of an Albanian Catholic Priest, Zef Pllumi, who had big religious plans for Albania in order to restore our true power. One of the USSR’s main goals was to eliminate the concept of religion. Zef Pllumi had sought to fight against their ideals and restore religion in Albania. Overall, they succeeded in destroying religion in Albania and declared Albania an atheist state. Before the USSR rose to power, the Ottoman Empire had just fallen and retreated from Albania. The Ottoman Empire was a Turkish empire that had taken over the Balkan region, spreading the teachings of Islam and convert most European countries. But, on November 28th, 1912, Albania had declared independence. This had left Albania very susceptible to any attacks from the different countries.

Zef Pllumi growing up was extremely religious with his friend Marin Sirdani. Marin was orphaned by a Priest at a very young age and had also grown up being very religious. Both Pllumi and Sirdani spread the idealisms of Catholicism ever since they were children and eventually moved around the country. When the USSR had taken over the Eastern Bloc, both Pllumi and Sirdani went through months of physical torture. They were sent on many missions by the Catholic Church from God in order to protect religious beliefs at all costs. At some points, they even partnered up with different religions like Islam.

There are many heartbreaking points in the books for instance, “… you must live only to tell,” Sirdani began to Pllumi, “Even if you are not able to do anything else in your life, live only to tell. Do you fully understand what I’m trying to tell you? Everyone else is dead, we are dead and you are going to be dead too: everyone is going to be forgotten if no one is not going to tell what happened. Who lives must tell! It is not because we are going to die today. We already know that. But we must not be forgotten for tomorrow and the next centuries. Do you understand that? Brother Zef, today I’m your Superior and I’m giving you an order: go, live! Only to tell!” (p. 253)

These books have the most detailed way of describing what happened. There were multiple points in the books that had gotten both sad and unpredictable. This made the book so unique and interesting to me. The vocabulary that was used was very descriptive and it helped me visualize the scenery better. The books never got boring and I absolutely loved reading them.

I would generally recommend this book to a much older audience or someone who has prior knowledge regarding the time era. Also, the vocab that was used in the books is on a higher level for readers who may be of older age. This book really helped me understand Albania’s suffering during the Cold War and how my family lived.
