Daughter of a Celtic Goddess and a Viking Berserker, Ylva has the power to spare. She is beautiful and gentle, fierce when it is needed. She controls both the magic and the rage that runs through her body. But, beware of her icy blue eyes.
Asger, Berserker blood course through his veins. Chosen to be a guardian, because of his ferociousness in battle, loyalty, and heart. Who knew she would claim it all. But is he strong enough to stand withstand her rage.
First Fire is the first book in The Guardians series by S. Lawrence. It is a fantasy with some mythological aspects to the tale. The author does a great job of adding uniqueness and individuality to the entire story. This novella is the first book that I have read by S. Lawrence, and I am happy to say that it won’t be the last. The story is engrossing, well written and fun. It is a very quick and easy read, but never felt rushed or cut short in any way, like some other novellas seem to. The characters are interesting and fully realised, with wonderful backstories and unique personalities. The story is emotive, with just enough drama and action to be engaging, and to keep me turning the pages to find out what was happening. We meet Ylva, who is the daughter of a goddess and a berserker- and Asger, who is a berserker warrior, whom the gods have selected to become the first ‘Guardian’. We follow the story and the characters as they hurdle training, ritual, obligations, and love- while learning to control new found powers. There’s a lot going on in this short story and I enjoyed reading it all. I look forward to more from S. Lawrence in the future.
She is the daughter of a goddess and a beserker. He is a warrior chosen by the gods to become the first guardian..a protector. Ylva is to train asger how to manage his new powers and the symbiotic dragon. From the first instant they are drawn together by magic, love and destiny. The path does not run smoothly..obligations must be held and that means sacrifice...
Some novellas that I've read have really jarring time jumps of feel rushed... which is why I actually am not a fan of novellas but damm this book had none of that and it was smoothly done. Fantastic charachters, story and wow buckets of feels.

a brilliant read about self control. after her sister Breathag is tortured and abused, the celtic goddess Morrigan decides to enlist the help of warriors to protect her family. whilst searching for warriors she comes across Asger, a direct descendent of a Beserker and he vows to protect the gods. but when a ritual to join his soul with a dragon goes wrong, danger enfolds from Ylva, the daughter of Morrigan. will Asger be able to help Yvla before it is too late? a brilliant read. well developed plot with twists and turns that I just couldn't put down. well developed characters such as Asger with his nature of never giving u whilst adjusting to new things. Yvla's struggles to be who she is were emotive and perfectly written. I also loved the play on language with Asger as the sue of his celtic dialect added to his kind and friendly nature. the celtic setting of wooden huts and untamed countryside was beautifully written to emphasises the wild nature of the world around them. I also adored the visual detail of the gardens in the portal with the diamond fountain and colourful flowers that were excellently written. I thoroughly enjoyed the sense of adventure and mix of myths and fairy tales with gods and a knight to save a lady with a dragon. all aspects of mythology were respected and treated with gentle tenderness to their origins such as the Valkyries or Loki or even Ygdrasil.. The combination of norse myths and celtic myths was beautifully written and helped to create a wonderful narrative and a compelling story with relatable characters. Overall, a brilliant read and I would give it five stars.
First Fire by S. Lawrence is the first book in her Guardians series and is in novella format, but does not skimp on contact in the least. Following the story of Yiva and Asgar, as well as setting up the plots for the rest of the series, there was allot of information put out for the reader in this book but it wasn't overwhelming. Because of the romantic aspect of this story, between Asgar and Yiva I was still able to get all of the emotions that each was experiencing all while getting the multi POVs about the other characters and scenarios that brought them all together. Yiva and Asgar are as opposite as it gets, her being a untamed and wild Berserker, and Asgar being the one who is going to tame her. The parallels in their character made for great fun to read and made them easy to fall in love with as a reader. Lawrence is a new to me author, and I am so glad that I picked this one up. The cover really pulled me in and the blurb of the story intrigued me from the get go. I usually tend to stay away from novellas at the beginning of the series especially by a new author because they either are overally informing on the series or they are meant to be read after the series as a prequel to a a specific story in the series, but this book did none of that. Lawrence was able to bring her series to a head while still giving her readers, new and old, a taste of her writing ability. The characters were well written, and the storyline was easy to fall into. If you are looking a new series to fall down the rabbit hole with this is one that everyone should pick up immediately.
First Fire: The First Guardian Novella (The Guardian Series) by S. Lawrence is the first book in her The Guardian series. This is a Gothic-romance story that is full of action and magic. This is my first book by this author and I enjoyed it. Her writing skills kept it engaging and easy flowing. I enjoyed how the story was told in a few different characters but the transition back and forth was easily understood. This story has some twists and turns that left me sitting on the edge of my seat just waiting to see what would happen next. Ylva is the daughter of the Celtic Goddess and a Viking Berserker. She has the powers of both her parents but she needs to learn to control them. She can control them when she wants to but beware of her icy blue eyes. Asger has Berserker blood running through him. He was chosen to be the guardian because of who he is. But is he strong enough to stand her rage, that is the question. I enjoyed the characters in this book. I felt compassion for Ylva a lot of the time because of everything she is going through. Asger is a tough, headstrong and loyal guardian and would do anything for Ylva. The other characters in this book are just as strong and each have their own qualities. You will love some more then others but they do make this story flow into what it is. I highly recommend this book. Find out what if Ylva can control the rage that is building within her.
First Fire (The Guardians, #0,5) by S. Lawrence was an original, action packed, emotional read that will have you hooked.
My first book by this author, and it being the first in the series I was prepared for some info dumping and fast character movement. I was pleasantly shocked that this story, though gave lots of info, was evenly paced out and given at the right times; so it wasn't overpowering or confusing. I will say that the first chapter of the book was a little overpowering. The first chapter wasn't as clean as I would have liked, it jumped around a bit, throwing me off. But, once you got passed that, and into the story, it's rich, powerful and just wow.
This book has multi POV's, and told in third person. You get an array of elements and you get such a well rounded story that just pulls at your heart strings. Ylva pulls you in, you feel for her and what she went through, you also feel how powerful she is through the beautiful detail of growth of her character. Asger, compliments Ylva in both as the co-MC, and as her love interest. I got super attached to them and I loved every minute of their growing connection. (I say that because.. well you're just going to have to read this book to know)
Overall this novella was outstanding. Outside of that little confusing start, this is a read worth your time. And I will be getting my hands on the rest of the books in this one-of-a-kind series.
First Fire: The First Guardian Novella by S. Lawrence is part of her Guardian Series. This is the first book that I have read by this author and I was blown away by how much I enjoyed this book. It is the first in the series so a great place to start as an introduction to this author. The book introduces the characters of Ylva and Asger. I loved the connection between the two of them. I found myself being taken along their journey with them and becoming invested in what was happening in the story. The writing was very well paced. My issue with novella’s is that the story quite often feels rushed. However the author manages to pace the storyline well, knowing when to introduce new details and when to focus on what has already been provided. It is written so well that it captures your attention straight away and keeps you going through to the end of the book. Although I definitely want to read more of the series I didn’t feel like anything was missing. The blurb initially intrigued me about this book and had me interested on what was to come. The book itself carried this through and gripped me from the moment I started reading this book. With it being a novella I do not want to say too much about the book as I think it is best to jump straight in two feet first just like I did. I will say however that I enjoyed the combination of different magic and characters that defined the basis of this story. I am excited to see what else this series, and this author, has to offer.
First Fire: The First Guardian Novella ( The Guardian Series) by S. Lawrence is an awesome novella to read.
This is the first book I have read by this author and I was not disappointed! This book pulled me in from the start, and it was never short on action or emotion. The story of Asger and Ylva is wound up in so many emotions. I loved both of these characters, Ylva is so strong and spirited. Asger is also very strong and fierce. This story had me on the edge of my seat needing to know if they will be together or not. Will the magic that runs through their blood help their relationship or be their doom?? The journey they each experience throughout this book will bring you in and keep you hooked. The other characters in this story will touch your heart as well. Even though this book is action packed you will still find yourself getting very emotional at times. This book truly has everything I look for when reading. I absolutely loved the dragons and the warriors and the magic, all the elements brought forth in this story came together so well, I couldn't put this book down till the end. For me it's a no brainer, I will be reading the rest of the books in this series and looking for new books this author comes out with. I highly recommend reading this story even if it's not your usual genre I think you will enjoy it as much as I did!
First Fire by S. Lawrence is the opening act in her Guardians’ series and oh my goodness what an opening act it was! It sucked me in and did not let me go and when I finished reading it in the middle of the night I simply had to go and see if the next ones are out and yes, indeed they were so I will have some more hours filled of magic ahead of me! First Fire is the beginning of the Guardians who are created to protect the offspring of the Gods and Goddesses whose power otherwise would be abused. The first guardian is Asger and Berserker blood runs through his veins and he is chosen by Danu and Morrigan (you really need to spruce up on your Celtic deities…) for his ferociousness and loyalty and his heart … and then there is Ylva who is the daughter of Celtic Goddess and a Viking Berserker and power more powerful and destructive then anyone can imagine … and when you mix it all with the ancient primordial magic … be prepared for ANYTHING! The writer has created a magical world that feels so real … especially to the ones that knows more of the Celtic and Nordic mythology! It all makes so much sense and you start remembering the stories you read as a child and whisper you have felt at the back of your head and … well, she pulls you in and you willingly remain in that world and do not want to leave!
First Fire is the novella is the Guardian series by S. Lawerence. This is my first novel by this author.
While I have not read any other book in the series, I was interested from the first paragraph.
“A millennia ago, beings came to the Earth. They brought magic and power with them, and in our infancy, we worshiped them as Gods. In return they treated us with kindness. Soon the seeds of jealousy began to grow. There were those among the humans that hungered for the power of these Gods, who sought to steal it from them. Danu, the great Goddess, had fallen in love with a human and taught him many of their secrets, moulding him into the first Druid.”
Ylva is a power being who has magic and sometimes struggles to control it. She falls in love with Asger who is loyal but brutal in battle. Can these two have a chance?
While I was enthralled, I felt the first chapter gave a lot of information and felt overwhelming. Once I understood the information, it became easy to read the novella.
It’s a quick read with different POVs that I enjoyed. I recommended this novel and look forward continue the series.
First Fire is the prequel to the opening book of The Guardian Series and I really enjoyed it. I thought that it was really well written and packed full of story for a novella. It certainly makes you want to read on and see what happens in the series. I loved both the paranormal element to the story as well as the mythological parts. The author did a great job of combining the two together. The descriptive language used in the book was fantastic; I could really imagine what I was reading. I haven’t read any of the series yet so it was a perfect introduction to both a new series and a new to me author. I liked that it was written from multiple points of view which was different for a novella but the author made it work and I feel like I really know the characters now ready to go into the next book. Overall a great novella that is well written with particularly good descriptive language that makes you feel like you are in the story. I’m looking forward to the next book!
I give First Fire: The First Guardian Novella (The Guardian Series) by S. Lawrence, 5 stars.
What an incredible book! You have Celtic gods and goddesses, Vikings, and so much action, everything you could wish for! Then there is the daughter of a goddess and a berserker, Ylva. Not only is she extremely beautiful, but she has powers that are stronger than she could ever imagine. When the gods decide they need more help, they choose Asger, a beserker from her village. While she is training him, she feels things she should not feel for this man whom already has another task chosen for him. But soon they learn just how much is against them.
This is a story of love, acceptance, defeating the enemy, and defeating the odds. All of that set in a wonderful fantasy realm. This book was written so well, and I cannot wait to read more in this series. The gods and goddesses were brought into the story exactly as you would imagine them, though they may surprise you a bit. I loved everything about this story and cannot wait to read more of the series to see where we are taken next.
First Fire by S. Lawrence is the prequel to The Guardians series. This First Guardian novella was a truly captivating fantasy read. I’m relatively new to this genre but I’m so glad I gave it a chance. This novella has certainly piqued my interest, it’s so detailed which made it easy to piece the story together and thankfully all of my questions were answered by the end.
From the very beginning this story held all of my attention, from chapter to chapter I was addicted. I read this book in one sitting as I couldn’t put it down. I really enjoyed that this story was told in many POV’s, which gave me so much more insight into these characters. The POV’s change within the same chapter but it was done in such a clear way that I never had to question it. This was my first read from this author, but it won’t be my last, I look forward to reading more of The Guardians series in the future!
This is a prequel novella to the series The Guardians. I feel because it explains how the first guardian was made, it should be read first. It is centered around Norse mythology. Ylva is the daughter of a Celtic Goddess and a Viking Berserker. She is beautiful and kindhearted yet fierce and extremely powerful. Because of his berserker blood, Asger is chosen to become a guardian. He will be the first. Ylva is to train him and show him how to manage his new powers. The two form a connection and fall in love. Certain things happen which allowed Ylva’s berserker side to come out. Death and destruction follow her everywhere. Can Asger find a way to connect with her again and tame the beast within?
It was an interesting short read. Being based on Norse mythology, there are warriors throughout serving up loads of action. Besides, any book that can somehow throw dragons in the mix, has my stamp of approval.
First Fire: The First Guardian by S Lawrence is the first book I have read by this author and was not left disappointed. I jumped straight into this book without reading Celtic Fire and while I still enjoyed the book thoroughly I feel reading the first book which sets the scene of the guardians who make me appreciate this book even more. I felt slightly lost at the beginning of the book which settled down very soon but may not have had this had I read Celtic Fire first.
From the moment you start reading you are intrigued by the guardians, the capture you and you can't wait to learn more about each one, this is done in a very descriptive way without overwhelming you too much. The whole concept is fresh, the history which is given is so well thought through and written is a such a way you are left wanting to quit life and go live in a totally different world.
This book takes you away from your everyday life while reading, it transports you to the world of the guardians!
An interesting, captiving paranormal story about the creation of the first guardian. In order to protect one of their own the Goddess Morgann merges the soul of Asger the chosen beserker warrior and ancient creature known as a dragon. After much training the ritual is preformed and a new guardian -the first guardian is formed. During this ceremony Ylva a woman born of a beserker father and a goddess mother also becomes more powerful than expected because she is the soulmate of Asger. This story follows not only the origin of the first guardian but the evolution of Ylva's power, her struggle to control it and the love the blossoms between these four soulmates. This is a uniquely written love story. The writing style is a bit different and took me a bit to follow whom everyone in the story was but it is well worth the read. I can't wait to read more by this author.
This story is on FIRE. S. Lawrence wrote about a Celtic and Norse Gods and Mythology. I love this subject matter so it only goes to say that I think this was an awesome novella. Lawrence ‘s portrayal of the characters and scenery was amazing. Lawrence wrote this story in the POV of the character she wants to reveal to the reader. I will say it throws you a little bit of curve ball in the first chapter because of the POV writing style but it gives great insight to know exactly what the character is seeing and feeling. This story is about Ylva a daughter of a Celtic Goddess and Viking Berseker. Needless to say, she has powers and then some. She is learning to control them. Asger is a Viking Berseker. He has been tasked with being a Guardian. What will the future hold for Ylva and Asger? To find out you will have to read the book.
His was my first book by this author. It has action, magic and fantasy for anyone who likes that sorta thing. It had a few grammatical errors and a lot of info to remember right from the beginning which made it overwhelming. It’s a short read that has a for sore spots but overall I really enjoyed the book and after getting past those things I was sucked in till the end!
First Fire by S. Lawrence is a Novella in the First Guardian series. I normally don’t go for books like this but again I loved this book and hope to read more in this series. Beautiful Ylva, a guardian and child of a Viking goddess. Is gentle and simply breathtaking, but he blue eyes are something you need to be careful with! Asger, also picked to be a guardian for his heart and the way he battles. One is fierce and one is gentle! What happens when the one can calm the other? What happens when these two strong characters mix together? So many things made this story what it is and made me want to read more. The way Asger and Ylva come together and compliment each other really drew me, and as the connection grew, my love of the book grew more. The only thing is I wish it had been longer! I can not wait to read more in this series!
First Fire by S. Lawrence is a novella in the Guardian series. This is the story of Ylva, the daughter of a goddess and human berserker, and Asger, a man that is just as filled with berserker rage as she is and quite possibly the one man that can survive her rage. This is a fairly short story but it is very well written. The development of the characters and the pacing of the plot was well thought out and nicely written. The two main characters are paired well and you can see a real bond grow between them as the story plays out. There were times where the story felt slightly rushed but with such a short novella that was to be expected. Definitely a solid four star read, while not my usual preferred type I really enjoyed this well written Novella. I'm excited to see where this author takes their readers next.
First Fire: The First Guardian Novella By S. Lawrence
It took me a long time to get into this book, and it was in fault of the author. While I didn’t particularly enjoy the book, this author has an interesting writing style and for that reason I gave the book a four-star rating. For the right reader this book is going to be an excellent read, it I think will be a book you won’t want to put down. This book centres around Ylva who the daughter of a goddess and human berserker. We also have Asger who is a berserker warrior who has also been chosen to become a guardian. Ylva falls in love with Asger, but does he fall in love with her? If you like reading books with multiple points of views, then this book will be for you. Like I said while this book turned out to be not quite my cup of tea, the authors writing style is great. So, I would suggest you read this book.
First Fire: The First Guardian Novella (The Guardian Series) by S. Lawrence takes us to the magical world where Norse Gods, Celtic Goddesses and Viking Warriors abound and magic is strong. First Fire is the prequel to the The Guardian Series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is well written and full of action, war, sorrow and a love so deep you don’t know who you are without your other half. I love that S Lawrence has written her story that is full of mythology and the paranormal. It is a short read but a good read. Before you know it the story has ended and you are left wanting more. I also love that the story was written in multiple points of view which adds an extra element to the story.
First Fire by S. Lawrence is the first book in The Guardian Series. It is an action packed Gothic romance. It tells the story of Ylna and Asger. Ylna is the daughter of a Viking Berserker and Celtic Goddess. She is fierce and kind-hearted. She falls in love with Asger. Asger is chosen to be a Guardian for his heart and strength in the way he battles. What will happen between Ylna and Asger?
First Fire is the first book I read by this author. It was definitely well written and flowed with descriptiveness. You will read this novella in one sitting, it grabs a hold of you and does not let go. The characters are well developed and draw you in to feel what they are feeling. A great start to the series.
This book is a great introduction to this Guardians series, with the fantasy twist the story takes you on an adventure with these wonderful characters.
Ylva is mixture of goddess and berserker who is trying to come to terms with it all, but through the story you get to see her grow more and more.
Asgar is a berserker warrior who has been choosen tobecome a 'Guardian' you follow his journey and the insight to his back story and how he pushes himself in the training and also trying to understand his new powers.
This is first book I have read by this author and world she has created for these characters is spectacular, this story gripped me from the beginning and can't wait to read the next book on this wonderful journey.
Wow! What an exciting book this was. It’s a really good novella that tells us how Ylva and Asger meet. It gives us more of the story that we started in Celtic Fire. We learn how the first Guardian came to be. It’s a really good book with great details on all the exciting things that are happening. We learn a lot that will prepare us for the other books in the series. This is a really good series especially if you like to learn about the Celtic stories and legends. And who doesn’t like dragons? I can’t wait to read more in this series. They are all so exciting and fast paced. I think this is another hit for the author. Really good novella.
First Fire by S. Lawrence is an introductory novella into The Guardian Series. It is Yvla and Asger’s story, four souls merging together as one. Ylva is a beserker and Asger is chosen to become the first guardian and merges with a dragon.
The entire time I read, I felt as though I could see the scenes that were being described. As a mixture of Norse and Celtic mythology, you see more of the magical side of things. I wanted to read more about the Beserker part of Ylva. I felt like there should have been more but usually that’s a good sign.
If you’re looking for an enchanting read, this is one for you.
This was a novella with a lot packed in it. Ylva, the daughter of a Celtic Goddess and a Viking Berserker and Asger a guardian come together with a battle. The story keeps you on edge as there is battles, hurt, pride, more battles, love, and beasts. I never knew what was coming next and that is why you won't want to put this paranormal read down until you have finished. What made me love this story was the mythology behind the characters and the plot. There enough detail to make you feel like you are being placed in the story.
I can't wait to read more. Even if you don't think you will like paranormal this story will draw you in.
First Fire: The First Guardian Novella (The Guardian Series) by S. Lawrence
4 Stars
This was a quick short read that I enjoyed. Although not my normal chosen genre it was a great story. I was quite confused and had to go back a few pages here and there so that I could stay up to speed but I think thats my own issue with the storyline and does not affect in any way how well the story was written. It had a great flow and before I knew it I was done.
I was left interested enough to want to read more and also can't wait to see what else this author has available.
If you love gothic stories then you will absolutely love this book!
First Fire The First Guardian - A Novella by S LAWRENCE
Four Stars
Very interesting read. Gods and guardians both doing what they feel is right or wrong. Multiple POVs and third person narration. I didn’t understand the beginning of the story but as I got deeper it smooth out and became clear. The author did an awesome job of not overwhelming you with too much information but gave you enough to not confuse you. Celtic and Norse mythology clash and the author did a wonderful job of pulling it together. It’s a short story and just a taste of what can come next. It’s a little hard to get really into the story without spoilers.
