I quite liked this light novel, finding it to be quite a cute book and an easy read. It is a collection of stories, loosely connected by the main character as she travels from country to country. The format of the book is quite different from most, with each chapter being a seperate journey completely separate from those previous, outside of a few callbacks or cameos from previous chapter.
The book also has a number of chapters that make fun of fat people, which didn't sit right with me. While there were only one or two chapters that did this, the comments struck me as rather cruel, calling fat people ugly and disgusting, and portraying them as villains. As such this brought the overall quality of the book down for me, alongside some of the shorter chapters going by rather fast and feeling inconsequential.
There's something ineffably charming about this novel. I feel like I shouldn't have liked it enough to burn through the entire book in a day, but I did, so...
The protagonist is the very definition of chaotic neutral. This book is comprised of a bunch of strung together short stories, and I'm not going to lie, some of them really do amount to nothing. Some are just for fun, little traveling tales with interesting, quirky characters, but some stories had some depth that could have been explored further and actually been resolved but just... didn't? But I still felt myself wanting to know how everything was going to play out and just kept reading.
I recommend for people who want a light, quick fun fantasy series. If you're looking for something with some meat to it, give this one a pass.
Simply put, it is a story about a young witch, Elena. Departing on a journey, she goes to various villages and kingdoms in each chapter. They all have various moral lessons in their stories. From there, she meets new people who are kind, strict, lonely, crazy, etc. However, because she is strong, she simply continues her travels no matter what happens. She is simply a traveler from the beginning to the end.
It's very a nice novel. Each country is really interesting and fresh. As Elena learns, she certainly grows as a person. For those that love fairy tales, I would highly recommend it!
I think the best way to describe this series of interconnected short stories is to say that it's Kino's Journey: The Beautiful World, Vol. 1 by way of The Little Prince. Like any collection, there are stronger stories (the flower garden one is very good creeping terror, as is the queen of the empty country) and weaker ones (anything with Fran), but on the whole, the book is better than not.
what i don't like here are the nasty jokes at the expense of fat characters.
other than that, it's a real fun read, with some crazy ideas of places and situations for elaina to deal with. i like how elaina's personality shines a lot, there's this sassiness and cockiness about her that doesn't really translate to the anime, at least from the couple episodes i got to see.
05 On the road: The tale of two men who couldn't settle a contest: Elaina debe decidir una disputa entre hermanos.
08 On the road: The tale of two men who fought over a girl: Alguien dijo personajes desagradables?
12: The queen of an empty country: Otra historia no muy feliz que digamos.
“The things we think we do for the sake of others are not always what’s best for them." Elaina.
The title of this book is accurate. Its chapters chronicle the journey of a wandering witch named Elaina. However, the actual content of those chapters don’t form a cohesive narrative, and the main character Elaina doesn’t have enough personality to make engaging commentary on these disjointed and often dark anecdotes.
The Review
Elaina may be a witch, but she’s not an ugly old hag. As a cute girl in her late teens, she’s definitely in the moe category. But despite being a genius at magic, she uses her powers mainly to fly herself via broomstick from place to place.
No, this isn’t a witch on a quest for magical items or seeking to improve her skills or any other concrete goal. For the vast majority of the story, Elaina’s magic merely shortens her travel time. She doesn’t even really use those powers to make a living, which strikes me as truly odd. Despite having the ability to fix broken items, transform herself into animals, manipulate tools, and fight off several mages at once, the way she earns money when she runs low on cash is bogus fortune-telling. As such, the magic aspect of this story is nominal, except for a couple of flashback chapters about Elaina’s witch apprenticeship. (Even then, her motivation for undergoing that training is because her mage parents require her to become a full-fledged witch before they will allow her to travel.)
The meat of the stories, then, is the places she visits. Elaina calls them “countries,” but they are more like medieval city-states. Each is ruled by a monarch, but they are enclosed by protective walls and can be fully explored in one to three days. Every chapter focuses on a different country or an in-between village. Because Elaina is a traveler, we get to explore these countries and villages alongside her, and each place is unique.
Actually, it’s more accurate to say each place has its own particular brand of weirdness. From the country that persecutes ugliness to the country awash in counterfeit currency to the country literally divided into two because its king and queen can’t compromise. Some episodes are humorous: others are mysterious or sad. However, these anecdotes tend to highlight the worst of humanity–stupidity, avarice, hate, deceit, indifference.
The opening chapter, “The Country of Mages,” left a particularly bad taste in my mouth. I believe the author’s intent was to make a story in which Elaina inspires a lonely mage. However, Saya’s behavior is definitely the stuff of creepy stalkers (I don’t care that it’s coming from a cute girl, psychopathic behavior is psychopathic behavior).
On top of that, Elaina’s commentary on the people and places she encounters is mostly snark. Because her snark isn’t particularly clever or insightful, it just makes everything seem that much more unpleasant. Given the disdain she expresses throughout most of her travels, I have to wonder why she bothered leaving home at all.
Extras include the first four pages printed in color, five black-and-white illustrations, and afterword.
I found this while browsing Barnes and Nobles, and that is the great thing about a physical book store. You get to browse and discover new things, and no background algorithm decides what you see or what you would like. I wasn't looking for books about witches, or short stories, or this delightful mix of comedy and tragedy. Online, I probably would never have seen it.
Incidentally, I wrote a blog post about this. You can read it if you want. Anyway, about this book review.
This is about Elaina the Ashen Witch and her travels across the world. She has no quest, goal or any other purpose while traveling, she is simply traveling because she likes to travel. What she doesn't like is getting involved in someone else's story; she'd rather add a few pages to it and then continue on her way. This makes the book something like a travel narrative.
Most chapters start with Elaina entering a new country and taking part in a certain event going on there. Sometimes she gets involved in resolving a spot of trouble, but other times she skips town without doing anything. She is what you would call "Heroic Neutral".
She is a nice girl, generally polite and does not make mischief. She will likely help a local if it doesn't cause her too much trouble or require her to stand in town for longer than three days. Don't ask her to do anything dangerous, but then she might brave the danger if she decides to do so. She is a primarily a sight-seer.
One of the interesting things about this book is that it spans the gauntlet of genres. Some of the stories are comedies, like the country divided into the Bread Faction and the Rice Faction. That whole thing is funny, from the apathy of the locals to the bickering of the rulers. Then there are some which are tragedies, really somber and sad, such as time Elaina met the boy who tried bottling happiness to lift the spirits of his best friend/crush. That ending is a critical hit to the heart, and just ambiguous enough to make it worse (Nothing Is Scarier style). Then there are those which focus more on Elaina herself; her history and her connections to people, such as her witch mentor and her own student. Those are the full package of emotions and story linking together to support the broader narrative.
All of this shows the author's skill, but the illustrator isn't to be left out. Occasionally, there will be illustrations of a scene. Of these is Elaina with her mentor. Another one shows her original departure from home after becoming a witch. These are great for underscoring key moments.
Trickster Eric Novels gives "Wandering Witch - The Journey of Elaina 1" a A+
It is a very different format which takes a lot getting into, and because of the format of the book, you often do not get to see the true conclusions of the people, places and stories that happen in her travels. Background information is interspersed between comments during the travels, and you often feel like you are not getting the full story of, anyone really, including the main character. It is very unique in its presentation, and I personally kept reading because I have not encountered this style of storytelling that often. The places the main character visits are all unique and different, so I feel that this series lives on its settings. There often is not enough time for any real character development, so the stories are based on events and settings, sometimes there is nothing that happens in the places that are visited, sometimes you leave places as soon as they start to get interesting, and oftentimes you arrive at places long after any hope of solving the problem is possible. If you read books for the plot, problem solving, or character growth, this is not the book for you. If you like world building, you would probably like some of the settings, but this is a difficult series to recommend because it is so different from the usual fare.
So this... is not great. It’s a collection of vignettes centered on the young witch Elaina as she travels from country to country meeting new people. The world building is nonexistent leaving each “country” feeling quite small and with insufficient description. I imagine that aspect will be left up to the artists and animators responsible for any manga or anime adaptations of this work. There were maybe two chapters that provided a break from the tedium—A Girl As Sweet As Flowers and The Queen of An Empty Country. The remainder are repetitive and dull.
I love how the character Elaina transform through each of her traveling adventures. She meets new people and does the best she could to help others with personal dilemmas. The book is filled with short storys of Elaina's travels. I look forward to reading another. There are graphics on several pages. The descriptions are straightforward allowing readers the freedom to picture what happens. Overall it was very entertaining, however it could use a bit more action, and obstacles that prevent Elaina from going forward in her travels.
I started this because it looked like it would be a cute light novel. I gave it two chapters, forty pages, but I just couldn't read further. I was not a huge fan of the writing style, the telling in first person was a little annoying, and it just didn't seem like it meshed right. I am sure there is an audience that will love the story, but it just wasn't for me.
Figured this would be a light kid's book, a bit like Little Witch Academia, but it's more nuanced than that. Not incredibly so, this is still a fairly casual tale, but I did appreciate that it has some dark moments, and that it had some moments centring on people and their emotions, without necessarily crossing the line into incredibly dark material like, say, The Ancient Magus' Bride, Vol. 1The Ancient Magus' Bride, Vol. 1, which this seems akin to but far less disturbing.
So far, this is the travelling stories of a young talented witch. There is no overarching story of global importance, or even a great character arc, as far as this volume is concerned.
The volume is four short stories, establishing the main character's talent, that this she has some emotional depth, and that this world can be a dangerous place. The world seems fairly straightforwardly medieval in that way that lighthearted manga fantasy tends to be, although the second volume, in that we learn that this world can be incredibly dangerous, will probably stick with me in a good juxtaposition against the relatively optimistic fare that the rest of the book is.
My favourite parts were the points when we learn how dangerous this world can be, as well as the interaction between the witch and her mentor.
This very uneven book felt inspired by the series Kino's Journey. Each chapter was a separate, discrete short story where Elaina would turn up at a new country, encounter some weird situation with some characters there or with the culture in general, either solve it or not, and then move on. Some were pretty entertaining and interesting, but some were just weird or dull. We learn a bit about Elaina's background, and some hints are dropped at her filling a greater role than just wandering traveler, but nothing comes of that. Instead, frustratingly, Elaina's character doesn't seem to develop or change at all over the course of the book. The good parts were good enough that I want to read the next volume to see if things improve, but overall, this was just ok.
6/10 Cute and sweet, to sum it up. However, the lack of strong details of the environment makes a lot of the countries blend together. The writing itself is fine and serviceable, the same with the art assets. Really my main complaint is the fat-shaming that occurs in the book. Any person who is overweight is always described as a pig in some way, E.g. a character is referred to as Porky; Elaina (the main character) enters a city where fat people are considered beautiful and skinny people ugly and so when she describes the overweight people it's as pigs, sows and dogs. Really put me in a sour mood as I read that chapter and just any mention of an overweight person.
As opposed to the more linear narrative of the anime, the Wandering Witch light novels string together like a collection of fairy tales linked by their narrator, Elaina, much like something from the Grimm Brothers or Hans Christian Andersen. While linear does work well for the anime, I quite like how each story flows into the other here as Jougi and/or their editing team do a good job of ordering stories in a way that seems fitting.
I liked getting more into Elaina's head. The first person narrative adds a lot to the stories. I enjoyed the majority of the stories, some recognizable from the anime and some that can only be found here.
I started this book on a whim because it’s been in my physical TBR for a while, and read through half of it in a few hours in one setting. After deciding to take a break and do something else, I’ve never felt the urge to pick this book back up.
I don’t I’m the intended audience for it, honestly. I think middle school me would have loved it. But there’s no plot. Literally. Every chapter features different people around the main character, with no continuation. It’s hard to get invested when there’s no story to tell.
It's a nice book, but maybe not for everyone. Every story is from the point of view of the traveler Elaina, so there are times when a story doesn't really end, she just continue her travels. Like in a real journey not all the stories have happy endings. If you came searching for a book with a complex world and full of magic, you'll be disappointed, if you want to read how a cute girl travels and interacts with some unique countries, this might be for you.
It was cute but the narrative and the writing went from huh? To meh pretty regularly even so it was a cozy read. I will read more volumes to see if the writer gets better, this was a self published work made by an amateur and it shows but still it has charm so I am inclined to believe that the writer gets better at it.
I can really see the inspiration from Kino's Journey with this title. However, I don't think it's quite as good. I noticed it was really lacking in depth and detail in the story and the stories end very briefly with the exception of maybe one or two having a bit more depth to them. It was still a comfortable read and it went by very quickly.
The only reason I read this and finished it was because my husband bought it for me. The main protagonist is self-centered and really only touches on the surface issues. I do not recommend this book because I’m still trying to find the point? What’s the plot even?
A fun journey following a young prodigal witch. Each chapter is episodic but new chapters find cute and fun ways to introduce characters from past chapters. Would recommend to anyone who just wants to sit back and enjoy an adventure around the world.
The great thing about our main character is that she's quite selfish and not very nice. I love reading the short stories and all about her adventures, because her personality ,and the way she handles said situations, is unlike most MC's and heroes.
This Light Novel is about the journey of a young witch named Elaina, and I like adventure stories. I had a feeling that this book might have been inspired by "Kino's Journey", a favourite Light Novel of mine, so I bought this book and gave it a go.
I was quite excited to read this book, but I had mixed feelings about it after I finished it.
First, the writing is amateurish. Well, the sentences in Light Novels are often simple and short compared to the Literature Works. However, the style of this writing is not my cup of tea. It's too plain and odd. I mean, why on earth are there so many ellipsis marks? There are too many "...", and those dots distract and slow my reading flow! The characters keep pausing on what they will say, which annoys me!
Also, the telling in first-person is irritating, because it shows how boring, shallow, and self-centred the protagonist Elaina is. She only thinks about the problems on the surface level, and her sarcastic comments about the people and places are not funny or clever, but mean and obnoxious. Elaina doesn't show much interest in the places she visits. SOMETIMES she does, and most of the time she drifts away. Well, she doesn't show much care for her family, either. The way she acts on her journey is so disdainful that I wonder why she bothered to travel, like, her travelling is another form of work and she doesn't entirely enjoy it. Therefore, the world in Elaina's eyes is hollow and forgettable.
Perhaps she will develop more in the future volumes... Let's hope that.
One minus point is the magic aspect of Elaina's world is lifeless. The author doesn't develop much about it. They don't even have any word for magic spells! Elaina and other wizards/witches only need to wave their wands, and holla, magic is done. Be surprised!
I am not, though!
I find it hilarious when Elaina doesn't use her magic skills to earn money. Perhaps she wants to lie low and not get too much attention. Sure, but that kills the point of her being a genius witch as the others and herself claim. Elaina is not cute or powerful. She is just a teenager witch who thinks like one. That's how I feel.
In Volume 1, two chapters portray fat people as villains, which leaves a nasty taste in my mouth, especially when Elaina considers them "pig" and "disgusting". My favourite chapter in Volume 1 might be "The Princess of an Empty Country", even though that chapter is full of plot holes.
Anyway, if you like a simple Light Novel about witches, this book may be for you. However, don't expect a deep or meaningful plot or amazing character development. I read this novel when I need to take a break from the heavy detective and horror novels I have.
Protégete a ti misma.
Soy yo.
As a whole, it was not cohesive and very choppy. Each chapter advanced too quickly, then resolved. The story with the flowers was creepy and came out of nowhere.
