As the first Russian bombs drop on Oulu, Finland in early 1940 during the Winter War, Aarne Kovala is a young boy with a great love of the sea. While the war rages, Aarne takes fate into his own hands and joins the Finnish merchant marines. He spends his days delivering war materials between Finland, Poland, and Germany. But when Finland's ties with Germany are severed after the signing of the Moscow Armistice in 1944, Aarne and his fellow sailors are arrested by the Nazis and sent by cattle car to the infamous Stutthof concentration camp deep in the Polish forest. Surviving Stutthof is a tale of survival, hope, and ultimately the triumph of the human spirit.

About the author

Liisa Kovala is a Finnish Canadian author and book coach. Like Water for Weary Souls, her second historical novel will be published in fall of 2025. Her debut novel, Sisu’s Winter War, was released by Latitude 46 Publishing in 2022. Surviving Stutthof: My Father’s Memories Behind the Death Gate (Latitude 46, 2017) was translated and published by Docendo in Finland, and short-listed for a Northern Lit award. Liisa’s short stories and creative non-fiction have been published in a variety of anthologies and literary magazines, and she received first prize in Geist’s 18th Annual Literal Literary Postcard Short Story Contest. Liisa also writes the Hygge House Cozy Mystery series as A. L. Jensen debuting in early 2026. Surviving Stutthof by Liisa Kovala
This is an important piece of history that the author was fortunate to save. The author tells the story of her father, then only a teen from Finland who, along with the entire crew of a merchant ship was captured by the Germans during the Second World War. Refusing to join the German military machine, they sent the entire crew to the Stutthof concentration camp. Hard labor under brutal conditions and lack of food was a daily event, but the horror of what their captors brought to situation stayed with the young man for his entire life.
The perseverance and will to live shows the absolute best in the human spirit and should be remember for all time. Truly inspiring.

I read the Finnish translation of Liisa Kovala's book "Surviving Stutthof". That's why my review below is in Finnish.

Liisa Kovala kuvaa teoksessaan isänsä Aarne Kovalan ihmeellisen selviytymistarinan toisen maailmansodan myrskyissä. Aarne selvityi kuin ihmeen kaupalla hengissä saksalaisen keskitys- ja tuhoomisleirin julmuuksista, vapauttajiksi tulleiden venäläissotilaiden verilöylystä ja vielä toistenkin vapauttajien, brittien ilmavoimien, pommituksen aiheuttamasta verilöylystä.

Jatkosodan aikana Aarne Kovala pestautui vain 15-vuotiaana merimieheksi S/S Wappu -alukselle. Laiva kuljetti sotamateriaaleja Suomen, Puolan ja Saksan välillä. Syyskuun alussa 1944 solmittiin Suomen ja Neuvostoliiton aselepo, ja sen seurauksena Suomen oli mm. katkaistava suhteet Saksaan. S/S Wappu oli epäonnekseen syyskuun lopussa 1944 Danzigissa, ja niinpä saksalaiset sotilaat pidättivät laivan suomalaisen 20-henkisen miehistön. Heidät kuljetettiin junalla Puolaan Stutthofin keskitysleiriin.

Stutthof oli keskitys- ja pakkotyöleiri ja samalla myös vankien tuhoamisleiri. Sodan aikana leirillä oli kaikkiaan yli 100000 vankia, joista yli 65000 menetti henkensä. Olosuhteet leirillä olivat lievästi sanottuna karut, ja Aarnen mieleen jäikin saksalaisen upseerin tervetulotoivotus, kun Aarne tovereineen astui sisään Stutthofin portista: "Täältä pääsee pois vain yhtä reittiä, savupiipun kautta taivaalle".

Kirjasta välittyy hyvin alituinen nälkä ja pakkotyö sekä jatkuva kuolemanpelko. Joka päivä väkeä menehtyi sairauksiin ja nälkään sekä vartijoina toimivien SS-sotilaiden mielivaltaan ja raakuuksiin. Vartijat jopa huvittelivat vankien teloituksilla. Erityisen mieleenpainuva on leirin tyhjennykseen vuoden 1945 alussa liittynyt kuolemanmarssi: nälkiintyneet vangit pantiin marssimaan lumessa 170 km. Aarnen osaston yli 800 vangista vain puolet selvisi lähes kahden viikon marssilta evakuointileirille.

Saksalaisten sotilaiden julmuuksia seurasivat vielä vankien verilöylyt, joiden tekijöinä olivat vapauttajiksi oletettujen venäläisten ja brittien joukot. Venäläiset sotilaat ryntäsivät yöllä vankien majoituspaikkaan ja ampuivat summittaisesti kaikkia. Brittien ilmavoimat tekivät Neustadtin satamakaupunkiin massiivisen pommituksen, jonka tuloksena satamassa kuoli tuhansittain vankeja. Vastaanotosta kotimaassa ei siitäkään jäänyt Aarnelle hyviä muistoja. Kohtelu oli tylyä, eikä merimiesten kertomuksia heidän kokemuksistaan uskottu.

Isänsä haastattelujen ohella Liisa Kovala on tehnyt runsaasti taustatyötä varmistaakseen faktojen paikkansapitävyyden ja ymmärtääkseen paremmin isänsä kokemusten taustaa. On oikeastaan harmi, että Aarne joutui muistelemaan kokemuksiaan äidinkielensä sijaan englanniksi, koska täysin kanadalaistunut Liisa-tytär ei osannut suomea. Tulkinnassa menetetään aina jotain. Kirjaa ajatellen toinen tulkintakierros syntyy, kun englanninkielinen alkuperäisteos käännetään suomeksi. Suomenkielinen teos on siksi jo tulkinnan tulkinta. Joka tapauksessa Kovalan teos on ansiokas ja täydentää oleellisesti kuvaa suomalaisten kokemuksista Stutthofin kuolemanleiristä. Leirillä olleiden suomalaisten kokemuksista on Oskar Reponen laatinut vuonna 1980 teoksen "Kaasukammion varjossa: suomalaiskohtaloita Stutthofin kuolemanleirillä".

The Review

This was such a compelling read. The author vividly brings their father’s experiences and memories to life on the page, the tension and heavy atmosphere of each chapter bringing the life of this man to life with honesty and conviction. The haunting tone of the time period and the detail in which these experiences were relayed offered a unique perspective on the life led in this Polish death camp and how people survived during WWII.

The heart of this book lies in the close examination of both the best and worst of humanity, as well as the horrors that the author’s father survived during his teenage years. The atrocities the Nazis inflicted on the prisoners in Stutthof and the cold, callousness in which they were treated are shocking to read, and the heartbreaking yet inspiring moments of humanity between the prisoners of the camp and the protagonist left a lasting impression on readers as the story progressed. The almost narrative style of writing and the exploration of the author’s father from the beginning of the war through his experiences in Stutthof were powerful in engaging with the story.

The Verdict

Haunting, powerful, and engaging, author Liisa Kovala’s “Surviving Stutthof” is a must-read nonfiction biography. The emotional toll the story takes, along with its themes of human nature and survival, will stay with readers long after the book ends, keeping them invested in keeping the memory and history of this era alive so that we may never forget what happens when humanity’s worst are allowed to take control.

I just read this book in Finnish. I'm a former sailor myself and have a master's degree in history. I have read many survivors stories of concentration camps and found this book by accident. Such an amazing story. I want to thank the author for telling her father's story, kiitos!

Olen lukenut useita Auschwitz -kirjoja, mutta tässä keskitysleirille joutui nuori, suomalainen Aarne, joka oli pestautunut laivamiehistöön. Heidän laivansa takavarikoidaan natsien toimesta ja Aarne kumppaneineen ohjataan Stutthofin leirille. Aarne selviää monista uskomattomista verilöylyistä. Oli mielenkiintoista lukea suomalaisen päähenkilön koettelemuksista, koska niihin pystyi ehkä eläytymään enemmän. Yhtä kamalaa se silti jokaisessa keskitysleireistä kertovassa kirjassa on: nälkää, vilua, murhia ja paljon työtä.
