About the author

I was born in Cuba at the height of the revolution. My family left when I was nine months old so I have no memories of my own, although I "borrowed" countless memories from my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.
I grew up in a quiet Los Angeles suburb and secretly dreamed of becoming a writer, but after high school I decided to study psychology instead and became a marriage and family therapist. I'm glad I did because my experience as a therapist is what finally inspired me to face my fears, and embrace my dream of becoming a writer.
Most of my clients over the years have been immigrants like me so many of my stories reflect the themes of lost homeland, and the search for meaning/identity in a new world.
I think of myself more as a story teller than a writer. Perhaps because as a story teller it is easier to envision myself engaging in a two way conversation with my readers, much as I do with my clients. Nothing is more gratifying for me than to receive comments and messages from my readers. I learn so much, and it inspires me as nothing else to keep writing.

3.5 Samartin er min guilty pleasure. Jeg er så glad i karakterene hennes, selv om de kanskje ikke er så dypt og komplekst beskrevet. De kommer til liv på siden og er alltid herlige og morsomme. Hun beskriver alvorlige tema med humor og varme. Det er happy ending for de fleste i denne historien, noe som kanskje ikke er så realistisk. Punchline er at man må tro på kjærligheten.
Denne boken er ikke for alle, men jeg koste meg. Kanskje især fordi jeg er alvorlig syk og har behov for enkle, fine bøker.

I found it weird that it had prostitution in it, which Cecilia's other books don't have, and although this is a standalone, the book was kind of putting me off because of the human trafficking and prostitution, but I still wanted to read the book since everybody's been talking about it. I liked it overall, her writing style is unique and well put together, but I wish the book had a few chapters of one person's POV (point of view) rather than how every chapter was from different person's POV. But, overall the storytelling was great.

This was a confusing read. The subject matter was grim and horrible and often made me feel physically sick. Then again, some parts were far too naive and poetically written and felt like they belonged to a whole different book, including the weirdly beautiful and cute cover. This did not come together as one cohesive book.

I loved Sammy, I really did. I think what happened to her was a cheap way to create drama because her murder was glossed over very quickly - who even shot her? She deserved more, if she even had to die at all. I don't think she did. Oh, and Luca especially was a really annoying character because he was too virtuous.

One more thing: I hate the Finnish name of the book, "Cursed beauty". It implies that these girls were raped because something they were and not because their abusers were monsters.

Mofongoa lukuun ottamatta olen pitänyt kaikista cecilia Samartinin kirjoista. Kirottu kauneus on niitä huomattavasti synkempi, sillä sen aiheea on ihmiskauppa. Moldovalainen Inesa, espanjalainen Karla ja murhasta syytetty 9-vuotias Sammy kohtaavat toisensa. Yhdessä he yrittävät pinnistellä karkuun pahuudelta, joka heitä ympäröi.

Kirja herätti runsaasti ajatuksia. Vaikka tapahtumat inhottavat, juoni etenee jännitysmäisesti. Tämän luettuani osaan olla onnellinen ja kiitollinen siitä, että saan aamuisin herätä omaan ja turvalliseen elämääni.

Hyvä, ajatuksia ja tunteita herättävä kirja. Tätä kun luin, niin enpä kävellytkään viime viikolla yhtenä aamuna Helsingin Vaasanakatua työmatkallani. Ällötti niin paljon tyttöjen ja naisten hyväksikäyttö. Vaasankadulla kun on useampi "hieromapaikka" ja ihan rehellisiä seksishow-paikkojakin sieltä löytyy. En kävellyt katua aamuseitsemän jälkeen, en tuntenut itseäni uhatuksi (olen keski-ikäinen, ylipainoinen nainen), mutta älötti niin paljon.

Kirja teki tehtävänsä ajatusten herättelijänä.

Järkyttävä ja liikuttava kirja ihmiskaupasta. Raiskattujen ja hyväksikäytettyjen tyttöjen tarinat tempaavat mukaansa ja he tuntuivat aivan todellisilta henkilöiltä. Lukija jännittää sydän syrjällään miten tyttöjen käy. Kamalinta tässä kirjassa on että tämmöiset tarinat ovat ja voisivat olla totta. Lopussa itkin. Kirja on järkyttävä, mutta myös silmiä avaava. Lukekaa tämä!

Romaanin perusvire on synkkä, mutta tyttöjen neuvokkuus ja ystävyys tuovat siihen muitakin sävyjä. Kirja imaisi mukaansa vahvasti ja Samartinin tyyli kirjoittaa on kiinnostava. Todella vahvat suosittelut.

I see a lot of people who have read Samartin's other books did not like this. I have never read anything of hers before this and I liked it. Gritty and gruesome at times but so is the reality of human trafficking.

Tragisk, men fin bok om menneskehandel. Synes den hadde gode skildringer, var realistisk og gq et lite håp underveis som gjorde at den ikke ble alt for tung. Liker Samartin sine bøker godt!!
