The doctor is back with a series of sessions from the likes of Sarah Silverman, Ted Danson, Weird Al Yankovic, and Maria Bamford. Based on the Emmy- and Peabody Award-winning Dr. Professional Therapist , the show reunites star/creator Jonathan Katz with H. Jon Benjamin (as his son Ben) and Laura Silverman (as receptionist Laura).
Jonathan Paul Katz is an American comedian, actor, and voice actor best known for his starring role in the animated sitcom Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist as Dr. Katz. He also is known for voicing Erik Robbins in the UPN/Adult Swim series Home Movies. He produces a podcast titled Hey, We're Back and can be heard on Explosion Bus
This was amusing enough to listen to while doing menial tasks but I query whether someone who has not previously enjoyed the Dr Katz television show would really get into this. I note that the audible version did not split each episode into a separate chapter, so a "chapter" had like three episodes in it? Not a big deal but can be annoying if you are used to using the timer to pause the audio book at the end of the chapter.
Dr. Katz is basically stand up comedy acts adopted into a therapist-patient type dialogue. This sounds like it should be a good idea but the end result isn't that funny. Maybe the comedians aren't willing to bring their best material or there isn't enough setup, either way, it doesn't really work.
Breaking up these ”therapy sessions” is some banter between Dr. Katz and his receptionist, pretty typical sitcom stuff. This actually worked fairly well and turned out to be the best part of this audible original.
