Pro-anorexia websites are a relatively new phenomenon and have attracted media attention for their seemingly unapologetic discussions of tips and techniques utilized by people with eating disorders. The media’s fascination has led to many “shock stories” that have publicized the movement as negative and have increased both the curious and diagnosed viewership of these sites. This paper will discuss the common elements of a pro-anorexia (pro-ana) website, as well as the various positive and negative influences that may affect the browsers of the sites. Furthermore, there will be a brief discussion of the use of disclaimers as viewer deterrents and the possible legal liabilities of these sites.
