Vaquitas are the world's smallest porpoise... and they're in very big trouble! Illegal fishing has brought them to the brink of extinction. Anita, a local girl, isn't about to let them disappear. She's using her special gifts to protect them. But when the vaquitas keep dying, she realizes she can't do it alone. She calls for help from The Bodhi Sisterhood, an ancient order of Earth Protectors. That help comes in the form of three more extraordinary girls. Together, they devise a plan to end poaching for good. That means taking on the Shar Ping crime syndicate -- with help from frigatebirds, seagulls, and a dog named Coco. And from the vaquitas themselves. This adventure is ideal for 9-12 year old readers who love animals and care about the earth.
This book got off to a slow start but is really addictive once you get into it .As well as being a great page turner it is also interesting as it goes from different characters point of view . This book helps to raise awareness for vaquitss who are a type of whale which are prone to becoming sadly extinct . It doesn't have chapters only three different parts but each part is broken into smaller sections by asterisks . Anita, the main character is inspiring because she is a courageous and determined girl who helped protect the Vaquitas from being caught. Definitely worth a read for children 9+
I am now keen to move onto to the sequel 'Vaquita Days '
An enjoyable book that has strong female characters who are dealing with a series conservation issue which is vulnerability of the vaquita porpoise, one of the most endangered species. This a good reading choice for girls or for any animal lovers. Looking forward to reading volume 2.
