England in the dawn of the nineteenth century does not tolerate a young woman of spirit who would rather ride than waltz and go fishing rather than flirt. Ruth Conroy is the pride of her father and brothers and the despair of her mother, who fears that her daughter’s unconventional ways will prevent her from marrying.
Goaded by her mother’s nagging, Ruth declares that she will only marry a man who can beat her in a horse race. As she is an expert horsewoman, her challenge seems unlikely to be met.
But family friend Robert Holloway has always loved Ruth, and if it takes a horse race to win her, then an equestrian he will be, even though he is a poor rider. Out of friendship, Ruth agrees to teach him how to ride with skill, never realizing that his goal is to win the race and win her hand in marriage.
When she is challenged, she must decide what she will win or lose in this race for her heart.
. This was a short, but pleasant historical romance story. The heroine is a headstrong young lady, who enjoys all outdoor activities that boys are encouraged to participate in during that time frame. Her mother is a proper lady and is mortified by her daughter's behavior. They often clash vocally about the daughter's unconventional behavior. When the subject of marriage comes up by her mother's constant nagging, the daughter defiantly declares she will not marry anyone that cannot beat her in a horse race. She unwittingly teaches a young man how to ride horses more proficiently and he challenges her to a race. Who will win?
This was a very short book, compared to the choices I normally choose. It makes it difficult for the people's characters to be fleshed out. I am an avid reader, who relishes the opportunity to get to know the characters intimately and spend as much time with them as possible before having to say goodbye. This really had the potential to be so much more!
It is a clean and wholesome story. It can stand on its own. And there is is the allure of a Christmas wedding.
When Ruth announced her intentions of only being wed to a man who could beat her in a horse race, her family understood that she was quite unwilling to give up her boisterous ways just to marry. The next door neighbor and childhood chum did, though, and he set about improving his riding habits over the summer and fall. This book was fun to read, and the constant skirmishes with Ruth and her hoity-toity mother over her manners were hilarious. The author did an excellent job of writing this book with none of the grammatical errors that are so distracting. Thanks 's for a really good read, Ms McColl.
Apple Trees & Honey Bees is a marvelous book. Author Charity McColl did an amazing job in immediately catching my attention and keeping my attention in reading this book. I love the storyline and the characters. I'm usually not fond of Regency Era books, but I highly recommend reading this book. This is my first book I've read Author Charity McColl, but I will definitely read another book by her.
I received a complimentary copy from Pure Read. This review is one hundred percent my opinion.
Years ago my mother told me she didn't like books with "all that sex" in them. Now that I am 62, I find that I enjoy clean romances better too. Guess I am more like my mother than I thought. This book is one of the clean ones. I gave it five stars just for that. The story is easy to follow and fast to read. Very enjoyable.
A lovely story about the frustration of Ruth's mother in trying to get her daughter to behave and act like a conventional lady. Ruth has a spirit that prefers to be outside with her brothers climbing trees, racing horses, playing pirates and fishing. Will she ever be tamed?
Totally enjoyed this. Spoke to me, as love the unconventional, with honesty and integrity. So true, that none of us are "the same". Everyone is unique and precious as God made them.
This was an AMAZING and at times AMUSING story of a young woman who didn't conform to society's rules. Her father was funny and her mom was very straitlaced. I really enjoyed this!
I greatly enjoyed this story, it was a delightful lite tale of a young woman who l am sure struggled to fit in in days of horn. A wonderful ending. I enjoy not having to skip over smut to try and get through to the end.
I was pleasantly surprised how wonderful this romantic novel is. Sweet, fun, with normal characters that were pleasant to know. A normal but at the same time unlikely family! I highly recommend!!!
This story was a lighthearted tale of a tomboy and her friend . They grew up loving each other as friends and discovered they loved each as adults wanting to marry.
A delightful little romance that develops between childhood friends. Ruthie has vowed to only marry a man who can beat her in a horse race , never realizing her brother’s friend whom she grew up around is asking her to teach him to ride with an ulterior motive.
Pure light reading with two wholesome characters. Ruth and Robert grew up together and fell in love with each other. All it took was a horse race to realize Ruth's feelings was her love for her best friend.
This sweet regency novel was well written. The plot moved swiftly and steadily. The characters were lovable! It was clean and wholesome throughout. Oh so enjoyable!
