OK. If I ever see the phrase 'vision board' in a book again, I will spontaneously eat my own small intestine. I want to like this book. But there are a lot of 'higher power' references here. There is a lot of references to feelings.
The attention in this book is how to create a 'unique purpose.' This supposedly involves being in love with a soul mate, drinking water, not doing cocaine (there was a lot of talk about cocaine...), exercising in the morning and not eating fast food. All fine. The connection between drinking water and being successful in the many manifestations of that word is seriously unclear.
Not only is this book dodgy, it really worries me that vulnerable people are reading this and attempting to reorganize their lives ...
Listened to the audiobook which offers a bit of additional author commentary. Maston Kipp claims this is a 40-day process to find purpose in your life. Honestly, having read (or listened to) many similar books, I have to say this book is not great for its supposed intended purpose. It’s much less about developing organization and purpose in your life and much more a general “how to be better.”
It’s largely just a coached journaling method, but the basis is highly misguided and based on working through “past trauma” and acknowledging a higher power through which to draw strength and self-love to share outwardly with others. Maston makes the higher power or creator a major focal point of his lessons, which does nothing for the less religious as there are many creator-oriented meditations and mantras.
Maston’s message isn’t necessarily bad, it’s just a combination of rehashed ideas designed to be simply digested and built upon each day. I lasted about ten days before the sluggish pace of the process and the overbearing integration of a “higher power” that must be recognized in the mediations and journaling became too much. I ran through the rest of it in chunks at a time. I almost didn’t complete it, but decided I had invested enough time to finish it up on my commute. I didn’t find it any more useful or groundbreaking than other, more entertaining books on the market. It seemed as though it would be a well organized process, but there’s so much extraneous detail that it ends to feeling a bit haphazard.
Claim Your Power: A 40-Day Journey to Dissolve the Hidden Blocks That Keeps You Stuck and Finally Thrive in Your Life's Unique Purpose by Mastin Kipp • "You may not control all the events happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them. Try to be a rainbow in someone else's cloud. Do not complain. Make every effort to change things you do not like. If you cannot make a change, change the way you have been thinking. You might find a new solution." • I knew about this book over a talkshow, Impact Theory, where the author himself was the guest. I enjoy it quite a lot. This book is not only self-helping, but also others-helping, as it can be used as a guide to coach. • "Your problems, your past, your hurt, your trauma are not what make you special. What make you special is the ability to discover and thrive in your Purpose in spite of all those things." • There is nothing wrong with us. We are already perfect. It's just that through our life journeys, we picked a few error patterns that influence our behaviors, emotions and beliefs. The negative feeling we have about ourselves now is a signal for us to make a change - start by cracking ourselves opened layer by layer to the original incident that influenced us in the beginning. When we rewrite that patterns, and rewire our belief system, that's the starting point of us to reclaim our own power, the power to accelerate ourselves to greater purposes. • "Intense Emotion + Belief + Action = Result"
It took me 3 months to finish this book which is a long time for me.
What I liked: goal setting, step by step instructions, the exercises and journaling. There are lots of truths to book, like following your feelings and what the Creator wants for you in this lifetime.
What I didn't like: this book is for people who are "dead", yes he uses this word many times, he's a bit dramatic with his words. Perhaps he can be more "Impeccable with his Word." This book is aimed at people who are unhappy with their lives. I have been working on myself for many years so my life rates at 8 and above for all life categories (you can rate them in the book) so in this way the book did not speak to me.
This book is very coachy if you like that. His mentor is Tony Robbins who I am not a big fan of. Also I tend to dislike ego-filled declarations like "I have had thousands of clients." which he mentions several times in the book. Yeah we know Kipp, you are famous amazing coach.
Claim Your Power, though well written and thought out, was not a very exciting read. I believe Kipp did a good job hitting all the points, in order, of how to "find your purpose," but it was hard for me to stay engaged. At the start, I was writing along when the book told me to, like writing my best feelings, worst feelings, uncomfortable moments, etc. By the time I got halfway through, I was ready to finish the book. I do think this book could be helpful to people who have lost focus on their life and future, but a lot of what Kipp wasn't really new to me. It was also a lot about Kipp's struggle with drug addiction, which I know he uses as inspiration, but that is not something I can relate to, and in a motivational book I want to relate to everything I am reading. Regardless, I do think there is some useful information in Kipp's writing, I just believe it is a very average self-help book.
Does your life feel like your days float by at random, like you are not in control of it? Do you feel like your habits and patterns don't change and define you in a way that you are not happy with?
I stumbled over the book "Claim your Power" while watching an very inspiring interview with the author Mastin Kip over at Tom Bilyeu's Youtube channel "Impact Theory" (that is highly recommendable by the way).
The book helps in a 40-day program to reclaim your personal power, heal from small and big traumas of your past, and to regain your strength to connect with your emotions, heart and soul.
The message of the book is simply to empower the reader to live purpose-driven life with meaning and joy. Doing the exercises and answering the soul-searching questions brings the reader on a journey to a new life.
This book delivered for me. I had aha after aha. So many great journaling questions, quotes, affirmations and daily prayers. I was ready to do a deep, committed dive into this and came away with insights that have already led to behavioral changes.
I would have found it less helpful had I not read his memoir, The Daily Love. I need to know how people have come to their insights. He shared some in this book, and I can see why he wouldn't tell the story again, but if anyone needs that also, read that book first or alongside, as I did.
I know I didn’t follow it in 40 days I took the quick version. I did write in a journal and silently reflect. I thought it was a very useful book helping me understand old habits and how to develop new ones. It also helped me understand vocabulary surrounding purpose and my mindset. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking to take control of their lives. I thought this book was neeeddd for me especially in my mid-life crisis!
Didn't quite make it to the end of this one (decided to call it done after 32 days), and it's hard for me to put down a book without finishing, but I feel like after the first section, I wasn't getting much out of it.
Five stars is generous but it’s a note to self to reread it whenever I need to.
This book is a 40 day journalling journey of exploring your limiting beliefs, or as Mastin calls them “survival patterns”. Although I found the journalling prompts at the end of each day, often redundant, frustrating or boring, I found my life outside of the book start to unravel. Maybe upheave or explode are better words to describe what actually happened. I’m not sure it’s entirely due to this book, but I definitely can’t deny the timing.
Additionally, I’ve never had a morning journalling practice and by committing to this book I discovered the clarity, focus and self-honouring that comes from carving out this sacred time.
I would HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone who struggles with their purpose, doesn’t know where to start with journalling or enjoys a prompt, and/or loves a self initiated self bettering challenge. I will pay it forward by passing on this book to a friend, however I know in divine timing it will find me again.
Quick note: this book refers to God in a traditional or patriarchal sense, but that’s Mastin’s journey into the feminine. May he find it 🙏🏼✨
First time I'm writing a review before finishing the book. I'm at Day 12 now. I'll probably edit when I finished it.
The exercises are great. Some real gold there.
But come on, Mastin, stop insinuating. It's so irritating. The constant assumptions of "You were messed up and now you're here to fix that" are so incredibly irritating.
I came to the book wanting to learn a bit more and move more in the direction of a well phrased purpose. Not at rock bottom, just wanting to explore my life through the exercises.
Also stop mentioning that you helped 1000s of clients every couple of pages like we're a bunch of monkeys that would forget and not take you serious anymore.
And I won't even go into the fact that I'm not religious and this book definitely is made up to be, even though he starts with "Don't get carried away because of one word (God)", you'd think he'd keep it at least a bit neutral, but nope nope nope.
In general, the tone of the book is what breaks it for me.
I listened to this book on Audible, but I loved it so much that I'm going to buy a physical copy as well! As much as I wanted to speed-read because the content was so good, I took the author's advice and only listened in small chunks over the course of a few months. (I think he recommended once a day, but I did it as I felt called to between June to October) It helped me really digest the content and topics to reflect on in my life, and it had a much stronger impact that way. If you feel stuck in any way in life & just need to do some deep reflecting, this is the book for you! I highly recommend it.
Once you see the comment regarding Mastin always talking about cocaine or his 1000s of clients, the message sours.
My other issue with this book is that he writes like a spiritual writer with absolutely no substance. It's impossible to talk about god but one who is impersonal. An impersonal and generic god is not a source of motivation but of lukewarmness.
I did not finish this book. As a Christian I had a lot of problems with him saying that people needed to put themselves above the relationship with God.
Este libro me cambio la vida junto The Power Of Now.
This is going to be difficult to get through. I'm listening on audio and now I want to go get a physical copy of the book so I can refer back to it. It's hard for me to not get distracted when reading non-fiction so I can only read it a little at a time, but IMO, this is not an audio-type book. It has you journaling, reflecting, thinking and creating lists, etc. Hard to do when you are driving a car or doing house work. However, the books' focus is worthy and could be a good tool for self awareness/improvement.
Inspiring, informative, educational... I began each day following along with this book for the past 40 days and truly learned a lot about myself, my OIs (as Mastin would call them), and how to realign my life and get my goals/priorities in order. Definitely one of those books where you get out of it what you put in - really taking the time to answer all the journal prompts, digest the material, and put into action his suggestions made a world of difference. I can see myself coming back to this time and time again.
Upon picking up the book I quickly realized that this very well could be the pocket guide, or the daily manual so to speak that many of us have been waiting for.
It seems that each and every one of us gets our very own wake up call in life. With the world at a tipping point, and as our lives face greater and greater challenges Mastin Kipp’s Claim Your Power seems to have come in perfect timing.
This book is meant to address trauma in your life. It's not an "optimize your productivity" self-help book. The author comes from a soul's perspective to get at what really matters. I personally found the way the author frames trauma and how we respond to it to be very helpful.
The author does come from a Christian background and, though he does make room for you to substitute your own religion, it can get distracting.
