For decades, Luca de Rossi has been imprisoned in Project Zed’s facility. More monster than man, he struggles with the same overwhelming fight between the different shifter spirits in his mind as previous beasts have. As a wereshifter, he doesn’t have the same strength to fight for control that the full shifters do.

Once freed from Zed, the normal therapies don’t work to free his mind and body. He remains locked in his madness, unable to return to his human self—and lost to those who desperately want him made whole again.

A dragon is chosen to attempt a new therapy. Drake the Enchanter is a powerful smoke dragon who understands prisons. Zed locked him in his body, not allowing his dragon side to emerge. While he awaits a treatment that might allow him to shift once more, he agrees to help the monster. Drake’s mental abilities are strong—but even his limits will be tested.

When he finally begins to reach the man trapped deep inside, feelings grow between the pair. If Drake can’t find Luca a way out, they’ll both be doomed.

3.5 stars. Bull's father Luca was finally rescued, both physically and mentally. Drake's smoke dragon abilities were awesome. Unfortunately, his double penetration strap-on sex toy was stupid.

Another worthy entry in the Project Zed series, the spin off of this author's Bear Mountain series. I consider this to be what I call a transitional story as it seems to set up future stories, in this case largely because so much is happening at the same time. I don't consider this a negative classification, at least not in this case. We have the main story about the "Monster", the most recently captured or freed victim of General Harding's pet project Zed. This follows the storylines for both series and gives us another couple to enjoy, with the HEA ending we all want. We also get a previous situation resolved, meet several new characters, have some new relationships either starting or hinted at, and have a whole new element added to the series. To me, all of this points to more good stuff to come, but to others it may appear disjointed or off from previous installments... which path will the author take from here? I for one can't wait to find out!

A lot of simultaneous plotlines are woven in this Project Zed book. It catches up on the previous Project Zed survivors building a life on Bear Mountain while tying up a major plotline stemming from the first book: what happened to Bull’s father. The team recovers a heavily guarded Project Zed subject while still injured from the previous operation. The newest survivor is Bull’s long lost father, but he is held captive by his own body. Drake, the dragon shifter, delves into his mind only to discover he is this shifter’s mate. At first Bull balks at this revelation, guided by his love for his deceased mother. After a couple of attempts and recuperative time between, Luca is pulled out of his mental cage and Drake’s injuries are healed. He is finally able to shift into his dragon form after being disfigured by Project Zed. There is some minor drama between between Drake and Bull, but Luca and Drake’s relationship is eventually accepted.
Other Project Zed survivors are given active roles in the operations, including a later mission to rescue what is revealed to be two busloads of shifter children. The fruits of this mission assuages the native population of Bear Mountain’s fears about the para-military entity growing more and more powerful on their mountain, somehow. The elementals are also given a couple of chapters, but not much plot progress is made in healing the dome over Bear Mountain. The short chapters with Cal build on the lingering mental/emotional struggles of the survivors and their mates, which demonstrates that surviving their trauma is just the first step.
The intimate scenes concerning the side characters is just shorthanded or fade-to-black material. The main couple get a longer scene near the end of the book, but other than that it’s just touches and intense stares.
This series is a fun addition to the mainline series and reading them in tandem does the legwork to balance out the “real world” politics of supernatural beings existing under then noses of regular humans. Humanity would surely utilize the fear and greed they incite to forge power for themselves.

UGGGHHH This series is so, so, so damn good! I love everything that's going on - and there is a lot going on in this series too. They MUST be read in order, as things basically just continue on from the previous books, and there is a LOT of overlap for all the characters.

This is kinda the book I've been waiting for since the idea of Project Zed first came about in the Bear Mountain series. We finally, finally get to know about Bull's past and his father!

I love that so many relationships are continued in this story, and we have new ones starting, too. This one definitely seems to set the stage for what's to come - I think that all of the elementals are now together, and I feel like they're going to plan something big to go up against Zed. Can't wait for it!
