Leslie Budewitz is the three-time Agatha Award winner and bestselling author of the Food Lovers’ Village and Spice Shop mysteries, continuing with the 9th installment, LAVENDER LIES BLEEDING (July 2025). Her historical short mystery collection, ALL GOD'S SPARROWS AND OTHER STORIES: A STAGECOACH MARY FIELDS COLLECTION (September 2024), featuring a remarkable figure from Montana history, is a finalist in the 2025 High Plains International Book Awards. She also writes standalone moody suspense as Alicia Beckman.

What a delight to return to the Spice Shop, a fictional shop in Seattle’s Pike Place Market, a place I fell in love ages ago as a college freshman. I made it my mission to eat my way through the place, and since it’s constantly changing, I’ll never be done!

In LAVENDER LIES BLEEDING, Spice Shop owner Pepper Reece is shocked when vandals destroy the greenhouse at her friend Liz Giacometti’s lavender farm. But then Liz is killed, and Pepper digs in to solve the crimes. As her questions threaten to unearth secrets others desperately want to keep buried, danger creeps closer to her and those she loves. Can Pepper root out the killer, before someone nips her in the bud?

Writing about Seattle and its surroundings never gets old. Plus it's an excuse to keep up with places I love, and to make regular research trips. And by research, you know I mean eat!

ALL GOD’S SPARROWS AND OTHER STORIES imagines the life and heart of Mary Fields (1832-1914), a real-life woman born into slavery who spent her last 30 years in Montana, where she found freedom and community, and her own place in the West, bringing solace and justice to those in need. The collection brings together three stories originally published in Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine, and a new novella, “A Bitter Wind,” set in 1897 and 1914, in which Mary helps a young picture bride solve the mystery of her fiancé’s death, his homesteading neighbors’ bitterness, and her own future. The title story won the 2018 Agatha Award for Best Short Story; others were finalists for awards from the Short Mystery Fiction Society and the Western Writers of America. The collection is a finalist for the 2025 High Plains International Book Awards.

I’m also the author of the Food Lovers' Village Mysteries, set in fictional Jewel Bay, Montana. DEATH A DENTE, first in the series, won the 2013 Agatha Award for Best First novel. As the Christmas Cookies Crumbles is the fifth book in the Food Lover's Village Mystery series written by Leslie Budewitz. I'm currently up to date on the author's Seattle-based series and have read all the previous books in this series. I've also read her stand-alone novel published under a pseudonym, and I have a copy of the latest book in this series, which was released a few months ago. I'll read it next month so that I can say I am current with all her books when 2022 arrives.

The series takes place in Jewel Bay, Montana. Erin Murphy runs a natural foods store based on foods baked or created locally. She's engaged to be married on Christmas Eve, and a woman has returned home from two decades away after a scandal. She's involved in another theft, goes missing, and is later found dead. Erin's friends split their votes on whether Merry is guilty or innocent. As Erin prepares for her wedding, hosts cookie-baking extravaganzas, and searches for the killer, things get intense. Someone tries to kill her!

Of all the books in the series, this has been my favorite. The series is good, but in this installment, the supporting characters and beautiful setting really begin to take hold for me. I enjoyed the holiday atmosphere, and it was wonderful to see Erin's wedding come together. I look forward to reading the next one soon.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Time to celebrate Christmas and a wedding in Jewel Bay. Adam and Erin are getting married on Christmas Eve! That is after she gets Murphy’s Mercantile all ready for the holidays. The community has turned out for Decoration Day and Erin is surprised to see Merrily Thornton has returned to town. She is even more surprised about how Merrily’s family is treating her. She immediately invites Merrily to her cookie swap the following Sunday,

Merrily fails to show up at Erin’s house or at work the next day. Then her boss notices his bank deposit was short the cash Merrily was supposed to take to the bank. The woman is reported missing and sadly her boss is the one to find her dead eerily with a string of lights wrapped around her neck. Erin is rocked by her new friend’s death and decides she must find her killer. Hopefully, she doesn’t cross the killer or Adam may be left standing at the altar all by himself.

It was a lot of fun to read a story set at Christmas when the temperatures outside were climbing way past 90 degrees. Decorating Day is Jewel Bay sounds like the perfect way to get in the Christmas Spirit.

The characters in this series are some of the most realistic I have ever read. It is very easy to get invested in their lives. Even though Merrily’s family wasn’t the nicest they still come across as real. I don’t agree with the way the handled things in their family, but we have all met people we don’t agree with.

The mystery this time really keep me guessing. Truthfully at one time or another, I suspected everyone the victim had come into contact with. Red herrings, there were a bunch. Several twists too. I was right about one part of it and totally surprised about everything else. I enjoyed how Erin jumped right into her investigation even with the holidays and her wedding coming up quick. I loved her method for keeping all the facts and suspects straight.

The story has an excellent pace. Many events take place within the 288 pages, but nothing is rushed or missed. The author describes people and places so clearly that pictures formed quickly in my mind. The dialogue was wonderfully written too.

A loving family and a family pulled apart come together in this terrific cozy mystery.

The author also includes recipes in the back of the book. The one I am excited to try is the Classic Italian Lasagna. Several differences from ours but without the Murphy’s sauce, it will probably be hard to duplicate.

In the fifth book of the Food Lovers series, in Jewel Bay, Montana the Christmas holidays are coming up. Erin Murphy is planning her for Christmas Eve.The merchants depend on the sales at this time and have scheduled a community wife decorating party. At the event, a Mother disowned her daughter in an angry conflict. Later the daughter is found murder. The evidence points to her employer and Erin feels he is not guilty. In spite of everyone telling her to stay out of it, Erin investigates to find an answer to clear up the affair. I like the ending and looking forward to the next installment. I enjoy this Leslie Budewitz's writing very much and highly recommend it. Cookies recipes are included.

As the Christmas Cookie Crumbles is a fast and fun read. The story takes place in a town called Jewel Bay, Montana. it is the holidays and the town is decorated for Christmas. Erin Murphy is the main character who manages her family's store Murphy's Glacier Mercantile. Erin is engaged to Adam Zimmerman who she will be marrying over the holidays. Merrily Thornton comes back to town in hopes to reconcile with her family, She spent time in prison for stealing money when she was 18 which had caused the rift in her family. She is married to Brad Larson but is separated and has a child named Ashley. .. She works at the Jewel Bay Building where it is discovered that money is missing and she becomes the main suspect. She is found dead by Greg Taylor, the owner of the supply company, in an old school house on her parents property. This is where the story takes off with all the supporting characters added to the mystery of who killed her. Erin decides to try to find out who killed Merrily and why. Through many twists and turns the mystery is solved with the addition of who Ashley's real father is. The ending is on a high note with Erin's wedding to Adam.

I enjoyed the story and look forward to the next in the series of what adventure Erin and Adam will have.

Thank you NetGalley and Beyond the Page Publishing for this ARC.

It is almost Christmas in Jewel Bay and there is so much happening. Adam and Erin are getting married on Christmas Eve, there is a town wide decorating day to bring in shoppers for this make it or break it time of year, and the cookie swap is coming up. Erin and Adam have bought her mother's house and are renovating it along with everything else. Erin is surprised to see Merrily Thornton has returned to town and offers to help her parents decorate. She is shocked when her parents shout at her and tell her to leave. When Merrily fails to show up at Erin’s house for the cookie swap, or at work the next day Erin becomes concerned. When Merrily's boss finds out that his bank deposit was short and that there might have been some embezzling, they immediately suspect Merrily of the crime. Later that day, she is found dead with Christmas lights around her neck. Now there are two mysteries, who killed Merrily and who is embezzling from the Hardware Store.

The characters in this series are very realistic and ones that I would love to have as friends, in fact, I would love to live in Jewel Bay. Family issues arise in this story as they do in all lives. We actually get to meet some of Adam's family and that is kind of fun. The mystery really kept me guessing. Throughout the story, I think I suspected just about anyone who knew Merrily except Erin. There were so many twists, red herrings and clues scattered about that it was a real stumper. By the end of the story, I was surprised about some things, and relieved about others. I was worried that the wedding might not take place, but that all turned out in the end. The story has a great plotline and it was well paced. I finished this story in a few sittings, yet it was complete, well described, but not rushed. I definitely recommend this one to any cozy mystery lover. Several of the recipes have been added to my Christmas baking section of my recipe book, they look so yummy. Thanks to the publisher for generously providing me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.

This the 5th book in the Food Lovers series, set in the Mercantile in Jewel Bay, Montana at Christmas time. I loved reading the other books in the series, and this book was no exception. Erin is getting the Merc ready for Christmas, and she's planning her wedding to Adam at the same time. Unfortunately, she gets involved in a murder investigation that threatens to derail all her holiday plans.

I highly recommend this book. The plot is interesting and I love the characters. Thanks to Midnight Ink and NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Updated review: This the 5th book in the Food Lovers series, set in the Mercantile in Jewel Bay, Montana at Christmas time. I didn’t realize that the 11/9/21 publication date was a rerelease but i liked reading it again! I have some Christmas books that I reread to get into the holiday spirit, and this book goes on that list.
I loved the other books in the series, and this book was just as good as the others.
Erin, the main character, owns The Mercantile, a store in a small town in Montana. She’s busy getting the Merc ready for Christmas, and planning her wedding to her fiancé Adam at the same time. Unfortunately, as Erin tends to do, she gets involved in a murder investigation that threatens to derail all her holiday plans and her wedding.

I highly recommend this book. The plot is interesting, I love the characters, and I like the small town setting. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

It’s almost Christmas and Erin is especially merry this year: she is about to be married. But Christmastime brings out the best and the worst in people. Merrily, a former resident and friend of Erin’s, arrives back in town after a twenty-year estrangement from her parents, but they still reject her. Not even her younger sister can affect a reconciliation. When money goes missing from a local business where Merrily was working, all fingers point to her, until she is found dead. When Erin’s life is threatened, she becomes even more determined to root out the bad guy. This well-written novel has it all: engaging characters, an intricate plot with clues for the reader to deduce who the killer is, cats, food (recipes included), and a bit of romance—and it’s Christmas. Who could ask for anything more!

Erin and Adam are getting married at Christmastime in Jewel Bay, Montana, but all is not calm and bright as Erin's new friend, Merrily, is found murdered the day after the Christmas cookie exchange. Merrily's previous criminal record comes back to haunt her - even after her death, she's accused of embezzlement for the second time in her life - and Erin sets out to find the killer, but she's not sure that Merrily was guilty of pilfering the missing funds. Using her Spreadsheet of Suspicion (love this!!!), Erin seeks justice for her lost friend, and investigates both the murder and embezzlement. Leslie Budewitz' As the Christmas Cookie Crumbles is the fifth book in the Food Lover's Village Series, and it's simply one of the most enjoyable cozies I've had the pleasure of reading - small close-knit community, a loving family, delicious recipes, a little romance, and of course, murder - it has it all! Absolutely loved it!

I know it seems a little weird to be reading a Christmas book in June but since I enjoy this author’s work, I decided to give this book a shot. As expected, this book does give that holiday vibe that feels very comforting. Erin is in the holiday spirit as well befriending Merrily Thornton, a local girl who has been shunned by her family. When Merrily is found dead, Erin just find out who the killer is before more trouble comes.

I enjoyed this book, but I don’t think this was one of my favorites from the author. There were quite a few slow points in the book, which I normally don’t mind, but I felt like the pacing was off-beat for a lot of it.

Merrily was an interesting character to me, so it was too bad that she ended up being the one who was murdered. I would have loved to see more of her character, but that also made finding her killer that much more interesting.

So if you’re looking for something with a little more tinsel and charm, then his might be a great one for you, especially around the holidays. I have no doubt that I will be picking up this book again to enjoy once Christmas rolls around again.

I love Christmas cozy mysteries and As the Christmas Cookie Crumbles contains everything that makes a cozy mystery "hard to put down."

Erin is a good character who is busy planning her Christmas wedding and getting her store, The Merc, decorated for the holidays.

When the body of a young woman is found, Erin is heartbroken to hear she was murdered. Worse yet, the young woman was shunned by her parents and had come home to beg their forgiveness.

Erin refuses to let the culprit go free, so she starts asking questions, which puts a target on her back.

I loved everything about this book and would highly recommend it to any cozy mystery lover.

As The Christmas Cookie Crumbles by Leslie Budewitz was a treat to read! This Midnight Ink Cozy Mystery comes out June 8th and is a great read. I was thrilled Net Galley approved my request to review it and even though I am anxious for summer to start, I really felt Christmas Spirit in late may with this one. A complicated mystery, with twists and turns I had not expected. I found it both disturbing and delightful, and ends with a Christmas Eve wedding, a perfect balance. A very good read and a lovely way for you to spend the summer holidays, be sure to check this one out.

It’s Christmas time in Jewel Bay and most things are merry and bright – except for Merrily Thornton. It’s as if a dark shadow follows her around town. When Merrily eventually meets a deadly demise, Erin is determined to find the guilty party and restore Merrily’s tattered reputation.

The author weaves in twists, reveals unexpected secrets, and scatters breadcrumbs throughout the story. This is a fun Christmas cozy, perhaps overdone a bit at times with holiday elements. This will delight those that love Christmas oozing from the pages of their holiday cozy mystery books. 3.5 stars.

This is the Christmas cozy that you have been waiting for! Christmas, a wedding and a murder all wrapped up in Montana and waiting for you to read! Excellent plotting keeps you guessing who the killer could be, but wait there is another mystery to untangle and will Erin survive her nosy nature or will the killer take her out before she gets to the I do part of her big day!?! I absolutely love the characters and the setting is one that steals my heart since I have spent a lot of time in Montana, Idaho and Wyoming and miss it every day! It like coming home to my favorite setting with a cast of old friends! If you haven't started this series, then you really should as you are missing out on a plethora of entertainment and very well written stories that keep you guessing up to the end! Read closely and you'll see the clues adding up, but they will add up in multiple ways so you'll have to read to the last word to find out if you are right! I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

I really liked this entry in the series. I enjoyed visiting Jewel Bay for Christmas and participating in the town’s festivities. I really like Erin and Adam, they make a good team. The mystery was good and I figured it out about a step ahead of Erin. Recipes included at the end, always a plus in my book.

It’s the holidays in the village and not everything is sugar and spice and everything nice. The mystery is surprising and done in the manner that Leslie Budewitz can only do. I adore this book the most in this series for the holiday theme and I can picture it in Montana and feel at home.

Synopsis:

In Jewel Bay, all is merry and bright. At Murphy’s Mercantile, AKA the Merc, manager Erin Murphy is ringing in the holiday season with food, drink, and a new friend: Merrily Thornton. A local girl gone wrong, Merrily’s turned her life around. But her parents have publicly shunned her, and they nurse a bitterness that chills Erin.
When Merrily goes missing and her boss discovers he’s been robbed, fingers point to Merrily—until she’s found dead, a string of lights around her neck. The clues and danger snowball from there. Can Erin nab the killer—and keep herself in one piece—in time for a special Christmas Eve? (Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed. Erin is a smart, spunky and scrappy woman and she does not back down from any challenge. When the murder of her friend occurs, she knows she has to solve the murder for her friend’s sake. I really like her family relationships and the fact that they are so close. Their interactions were realistic and very enjoyable to read.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy read.
The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through much of the story I felt that I was right there watching all of the action taking place. I really liked the setting of Jewel Bay, Montana, and it would be a place I would like to visit. It has a typical small town feel and everyone knows everybody else's business.

The mystery was well plotted and it was not easy to solve. There were enough suspects to consider and plenty of clues to sift through. There were plenty of twists and turns and it made the mystery that much more difficult to solve.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. This is the first book that I have read in this series, but it will not be the last.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Midnight Ink, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Erin is trying to get the Merc ready for Christmas on Decorating Day (the day when ALL the businesses try and get gussied up for Christmas), she realises though that two boxes have got mixed up and so she (and her mother Fresca) head off to the other shop to swap them over.  When they get there however they end up witnessing an altercation between Tara and her daughter Merrily, Tara has never forgiven Merrily for stealing and being sent to prison ... even though she is well and truly on the straight and narrow and obviously wishes to make amends. Erin invites Merrily back to the Merc for a warm drink and to help her relax after the upset.  The two of them get on well and so Erin also invites her to take part in the cookie swap she is running and Merrily happily agrees to be part of it.  The problem is on the day she doesn't turn up, and on the Monday Merrily doesn't arrive for work at the Building Supplies Store ... and then the store discovers money missing and the finger points firmly at Merrily, the problem is she can't defend herself as she is dead!

Erin takes on the task of proving that her instincts are right and that Merrily didn't steal, oh and to find out who killed her, and just in case that isn't enough she and Adam are getting married on Christmas Eve ... no pressure then!

The town of Jewel Bay, Montana is the quintessential cozy mystery small town and is the perfect spot for a Food Lover’s Village! I would love to visit the various shops, particularly the Merc that Erin owns and stocks with items (including, of course, food) from local vendors. Shops like that are right up my alley, next in line to independent bookstores, that is. Erin and her family and friends and employees are realistic characters who, in spite of the quirks that go hand-in-hand with cozy mysteries, feel like people you could easily befriend in real life.

The murder mystery in As the Christmas Cookie Crumbles kept me guessing all the way until the big reveal. I changed my mind umpteen times about who I thought did it, even circling back around a time or ten to characters I thought I had already eliminated as suspects. Some of my suspicions ultimately proved right but I was also way off on a couple of points – not easy for an author to surprise me like that, considering how many Murder She Wrote, Perry Mason, and Matlock episodes I watched as a kid – not to mention all the Nancy Drew books I read back then plus all the mysteries I’ve read since. A very nicely crafted mystery plot indeed!

Bottom Line: Cute, Christmasy and cozy, As the Christmas Cookie Crumbles is entertaining and heartwarming. The murder mystery is superbly plotted out, and the town full of suspects will keep readers on their toes! Great characters to befriend and local shops to sample – this series from Leslie Budewitz has it all! (While this is the 5th book in the series, it can also be read well as a stand alone.)

Another fun visit to Jewel Bay, Montana, this time at Christmas. It was fun reading about all the village activities and the shops’ decorations, and put me in the holiday mood.

The identity of the murder victim in this story made me sad, but there were plenty of suspects to consider. My list kept changing as the story progressed, but I never did have the actual killer at the top of the list. I really hoped it would be one particular character, but alas, it was someone else. The motive was disappointing, but it made sense.

I would love to read more about Erin, Kim, Adam and the rest, but this is the last book in the series, so I will have to turn to other books for my small-town atmosphere reading.

This is probably my favorite in the Food Lovers' Village mysteries, and that's saying something! In As the Christmas Cookie Crumbles, main character Erin is a busy bee. She's running her family's Montana specialty food shop, the Merc, preparing for Christmas, getting settled into her new home, and planning her upcoming wedding. And because of her past experience with helping solve murders, she can't help investigating the latest Jewel Bay mystery. There's a lot going on in this book, though instead of being overwhelming, it keeps the story moving at a good pace. I had a hard time putting this book down - in fact, I was up later than I should have been to finish it. The mystery to be solved is a multi-faceted, and I figured out part of it on my own, but didn't figure it all out before it was revealed. The recipes included at the end look great, especially the Shrimp Florentine!

I was thrilled to receive an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

AS THE CHRISTMAS COOKIE CRUMBLES by Leslie Budewitz is the fifth book in the Food Lovers series. The Christmas holidays are gearing up with lots of festivities planned in Jewel Bay, Montana, which prides itself on promoting local food and crafts. Erin Murphy, manager of her family’s Murphy Mercantile, is a delightful protagonist. I adore the closeness she shares with her family which spills over into the close-knit community. Erin is kind-hearted and befriends Merrily, who has been shunned from her family for a long-ago transgression which she had paid dearly for. Given the ongoing holiday festivities, Merrily’s family situation becomes all that more heartbreaking. I found Ms. Budewitz writes rich, emotional connections between the characters and brings the spirit of the season to life on the pages. And even though it’s only June, I’m happy to read about Christmas any time of the year!

When Merrily is found murdered, Erin grieves for a friend she barely knew and is pulled into finding justice for the woman. Even though Erin is busy finalizing her wedding plans to Adam and participating in the town’s events, she still finds time to ask questions and find the truth. There were enough suspects to keep me guessing without too many overwhelming the plot. Subplots were woven into the story to bring an added depth of richness to the tale and Ms. Budewitz brings all the threads together in one satisfying conclusion. I also appreciated how the author includes a list of characters at the very beginning of the book. While I didn’t need to reference it since characters were judiciously introduced, it was nice to have “just in case”. And truth be told, it was terrific to have when writing this review since I got so caught up in the fast-paced story I forgot to take many notes.

With the Christmas season being celebrated in the village, Erin hosts a cookie exchange party. It was fun reading Erin’s description of how she connects the cookie qualities with the personality of the baker who brought them to the exchange. The reader will be drooling over the myriad of recipes Ms. Budewitz includes at the back of the book, both for cookies and savory dishes alike!

I was provided an advance copy via Netgalley with the hopes I would review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Food Lovers' Village Mystery series is on my list of favorites. I like the town, cast of characters, and all the food, which is why I requested to review this book and subsequently held my breath until I heard back.

This is the fifth installment for the series. Erin, manager of the Merc, gets involved in the investigation of the murder of Merrily Thornton. (Her parents love Christmas, can you tell? The sister's name is Holly...) After having recently returned to Jewel Bay, Merrily has been accused of embezzlement (for which she went to jail twenty years earlier) when her body is discovered. What follows is a complicated web of lies, stealing, and just about the worst family dynamic I have seen in a cozy. All the meanwhile, Erin is trying to keep the Merc afloat during the busy holiday season and plan her wedding, which is to occur on Christmas Eve.

There's a lot of different things going on here, but it's presented well and isn't confusing. I also appreciate "The Cast" listed at the beginning as it has been awhile since I read one of the books in the series and there is a large amount of characters. Also while there is a hint, it is not obvious who the guilty party is (or are...?), which I always prefer. Definitely recommended.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

It's Christmas time and the whole town is busy decorating Main Street with lights and all the trimmings. All those special touches like the items you might find at The Merc, the place to find your boutique-like specialty foods, for the true foodie. It's a time for family and friends or at least you would think so, but not for Merrily who returns home after turning her life around only to find that it isn't enough for her Mom who is as cold as the weather in Jewel Bay. Erin Murphy the manager of Murphy's Mercantile AKA The Merc believes in second chances and befriends Merrily, just in time for the annual cookie exchange. Unfortunately Merrily never makes it to the exchange and won't be able to make anymore in the future. Erin works to not only clear Merrily's name of theft suspicions but to also find the killer as well as plan her wedding that is set to take place on Christmas eve. I would LOVE to have the multitasking skills of the cozy heroine. Erin is a fun character and her conviction in getting to the bottom and belief in someone she barely knew was heart warming. Looking forward to the next installment. OH and if you like to cook you will LOVE the recipes as the end of the story. I really appreciate that they are not in the middle, so that I don't get side tracked.

What’s could be better than curling up with a great story about Christmas, cookies, and murder to go with it without having to worry about the snow piling up outside? I love to read holiday-themed stories during the corresponding holiday season, but As the Christmas Cookie Crumbles was a nice break from the heat we’ve had here recently.

When Erin’s new friend ends up strangled, she decides to find the killer and bring him or her to justice. I love the characters and the setting in this series – the story was well thought-out and I couldn’t help but root for Erin, trying to get ready for her wedding and catch a murderer at the same time! The mystery and the other details of Erin’s life compliment each other nicely.

As the Christmas Cookie Crumbles is the fifth book in the Food Lover series. It might be nice to know the characters before you dive in, but you can certainly read this one even if you haven’t read the rest of the series.

All is merry and bright in Jewel Bay, Montana. At Murphy's Mercantile, AKA the Merc, manager Erin Murphy is ringing in the holiday season with food, drink, a wedding, and a new friend: Merrily Thornton. A local girl who committed a crime and paid for it. Merrily has turned her life around. She has a new job, and a beautiful daughter in college, but her parents have publicly shunned her, as they nurse a bitterness that chills Erin.

When Merrily goes missing, and her boss discovers he's been robbed, fingers point to Merrily, until she's found dead, with a string of lights wrapped around her neck. Following the clues puts Erin in harm's way. She needs to unravel the mystery and put a killer behind bars before the wrong person goes to jail. Erin is on a mission to clear a friends name before her wedding day on Christmas Eve?

As the Christmas Cookie Crumbles is the fifth book in the “A Food Lovers’ Village Mystery” series. The story is fast-paced and entertaining. Ms. Budewitz is a talented writer with a good grip on what makes a mystery interesting.

The story revolves around Erin Murphy, the proprietor of a family-owned business, Murphy's Mercantile. She is about to get married and is happy but overwhelmed. When she meets Merrily, she feels as though she has found a friend, only to have the sprouting friendship whisked away when Merrily is murdered. Everyone is pointing fingers at Merrily boss, Greg Taylor but Erin isn’t as positive as they are that Merrily was a thief and Greg, her killer.

Erin is a wonderful character filled with pride, happiness and too much curiosity for her own good. She keeps stepping into in murder investigations and even though she tells herself not to get involved, she somehow winds up smack in the middle of trouble. Other characters such as Greg Taylor, Tracy, and Lou Mary, are fantastic characters that readers will love. Most of the characters in this book are warm., friendly, easy to like, and memorable..

The setting of Jewel Bay is intriguing. Montana is a wonderful place to put a food lovers village. Some of the best food in the country can be found in towns like Billings or Bozeman. So it comes as no surprise to find a story with a basis in food set in a location within Montana’s borders. The beauty of the area is described lovingly in this book and is sure to make readers want to visit.

Overall, As the Christmas Cookie Crumbles is a thrilling journey through small-town life and unexpected murder. It is easy to read and filled with action. Characters are unforgettable and caring, readers will be enthralled by the life of Erin Murphy and the crazy situation she gets herself into. This is a clean read and can be enjoyed by readers of any age. The recipes in the back of the book are mouthwatering. I highly recommend this book to readers of all genres.

I love reading holiday themed books all year round. This one was fun to read as the author makes the town come to life with decorations that make you smile. I would love to visit the Merc and hang out with Erin. She sounds so fun and oh my does she have wonderful things to buy in the store. When Merrily was introduced into the story I instantly liked her. She has had a hard life but I really think she is trying to change things for the better. I was so angry when her mom made a scene in front of everybody and basically rejected her. What happened to forgiveness and giving someone a second chance?

I was very angry when Merrily came up missing. I could see the writing on the wall of her demise. The author does a great job of giving readers several suspects. The town is pretty much in shock and Erin steps into help the investigation. I hope she remembers she has a very important event coming up on Christmas Eve. The tension over the years between Merrily and her parents was very well written. I felt a little tug on my heart for her father. He wanted to make amends with his daughter, but for some reason Merrily's mother wouldn't budge. I would hate it if I had a strained relationship with one of my kids.

The action and intrigue in the story is fast paced and I really enjoyed trying to figure out who the killer was. Erin has attracted someones attention regarding Merrily's death because she finds herself in unexpected danger. The story is very well written and I loved finding out more about Merrily when she was younger. There were some twists that I didn't see coming and was very surprised at who the killer was. Don't miss this great adventure and the wonderful recipes at the back of the book.

I received a copy of this book from The Great Escape Virtual Book Tour. The review is my own opinion.

The snow is falling and the Christmas spirit is rising in Jewel Bay, Montana. Oh so one thinks. Erin, the Merc, manager has befriended the two pariah, Merrily Thornton. Almost twenty years ago her family shunned her when she pled guilty to taking money from her place of employment. She has comeback trying to make amends with her family and finds herself dead on her parents property. Erin cannot resist sticking her nose into the investigation but will she live to see her Christmas dream wedding come true?

This is the fifth book in the Food Lovers' Village Mystery series but my first and I am hooked. I already want to start looking for the first four books in the series. Erin, the main character, is a perfect amateur sleuth for me. She is feisty, sweet and loves her family. I have been reading a lot of cozy mysteries where the sleuth is not close with her/his family so I found this a great twist for me. I love the Sunday family dinners her family has. Her mother would drive me crazy just popping in and taking over her house but I understand why she does.

One of my favorite things about the book is their is not a love triangle. Erin is perfectly happy with her fiancé and he is not a jerk. Sometimes I find the love triangle over takes the story in cozy mysteries. With the main character already in love and pretty much settled we can focus on the mystery.

As the Christmas Cookie Crumbles may be a Christmas book but I believe you will enjoy it anytime of the year. Grab your warm blanket, a hot cup of yumminess and sit back and relax and get to know the residents of Jewel Bay. You will be glad you did.

Thank you to NetGalley and Midnight Ink for a copy to read in exchange for my honest review in my own words.

I received this book for free from Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
