The multi award-winning series The Du Lac Chronicles continues:

War is coming…

The ink has dried on Amandine’s death warrant. Her crime? She is a du Lac.

All that stands in the way of a grisly death on a pyre is the King of Brittany. However, King Philippe is a fickle friend, and if her death is profitable to him, then she has no doubt that he would light the pyre himself.

Alan, the only man Amandine trusts, has a secret and must make an impossible choice, which could have far-reaching consequences — not only for Amandine, but for the whole of Briton.

A great addition to this very enjoyable series.
Believable characters are tested to their limits, physically and mentally. The plot is exciting and has lots of tension. Betrayal and misdirection, love and loyalty and secrets and lies add fuel and ratches up the intrigue.
I've not studied the Arthurian legend or this period so I have to leave it to others to comment on the historical accuracy. I can say the period seems to have been thoroughly researched and the setting is consistent and coherent. I can confirm this is a very enjoyable read that can be read as a stand alone but why deny yourself the pleasure of reading the series from the start?

THE BEST I’VE EVER READ IN THIS GENRE!

I cannot recommend this novel highly enough. But I’m not going to talk about the story here – I don’t want to spoil the deliciousness of it- save to say that this book starts where the previous one ended. In my opinion, always a good thing.

Ms Yarde has again taken us on a wonderful journey into the Arthurian world but this time, she has outdone herself. The Du Lac Princess is the best book I’ve ever read in this genre. Think Game of Thrones, Outlander and Vikings all rolled into one. Seriously, I can see this story as the next big TV hit.

Not only is the writing superb, the research thorough, the story exciting, but the characters are wonderfully drawn, each with their own distinctive personalities, quirks and presence. This is no mean feat as we’re dealing with a number of powerful alpha males and amazing women often suffering through circumstances not many of us could imagine for ourselves. Theirs was a brutal time in history and Ms Yarde brings these amazing people to life brilliantly. The heroes are wonderfully complex and intriguing and the villains are fabulously villainous.

Of the many great characters, my favourite is Tegan. She says it how it is and doesn’t tolerate nonsense from anyone. Tegan is the old pagan woman who was once a Knight at the Court of King Arthur. We learn that she had been in love with Lancelot and most likely still was despite having married another man with whom she'd had a good life. But Tegan is a tough old bird who'd been through much in life and lives with remarkable fortitude and vitality despite her advancing years – a wise survivor after my own heart. Upon meeting Merton, and immediately realising that he was one of Lancelot’s sons, she helps to heal him after his horrific torture on orders of the usurper, King Philippe.

I was breathless by the end of the novel and much relieved that Merton and Amandine ended up together, ready to continue their story - hopefully - in the next novel.

I’m delighted that the author has decided to continue the story in a series of books, rather than in a trilogy. I'm already missing the characters who had become friends, and look forward to the next novel when I'll meet them again.

A riveting read. An interesting take on what happened after the deaths of King Arthur and Sir Lancelot. Going in, I thought this was the final book in a trilogy. But the story will continue. So the various threads of the story are not all wrapped up in a tidy package at the end. But one of the major story threads does reach a climax and conclusion.

Besides the tension that kept me on the edge of my seat, there was also a good deal of ruminating about religion and the conflict between the Catholic Church that existed in the year 500, and the more ancient “pagan” religion. Interestingly, some meaningful discussions were also included about certain characters’ desires to go beyond the punitive, unforgiving church doctrine of that era, to forge a more forgiving and accepting church.

Besides focusing to a great extent on my favorite Du Lac brother, Merton, this installment in the Du Lac Chronicles also features some of the famous characters who interacted with King Arthur, himself. Fun stuff.

There were some editing issues, but not enough to mar my reading experience.

I’ll admit, I fell in love with this series as soon as I read book one, so naturally, I was eagerly awaiting each following book as I grew so attached to the characters that I couldn’t wait to find out what fate had in store for them. The third book was probably even more tension-filled than the first two, with the life of Amandine, one of the central characters in this installment, hanging by a thread. Condemned to death because of her relationship with Merton Du Lac, Amandine has to go through unimaginable tortures, both physical and psychological when the murderer of her beloved decides to start playing a twisted game with her, the goal of which she can’t possibly comprehend.
What I also enjoyed is that the characters from the previous installments played their role together with some remarkable newcomers, Tegan becoming my new personal favorite with her witty remarks and no-nonsense attitude. What I also appreciated was how the story dwelled on such issues as religious tolerance, which is still so very relevant today. Action-packed, meticulously researched and brilliantly written this story definitely will be a treat for any fan of the historical fiction genre. Five huge stars.

I like what Arthur and his knights represent for western civilization. The Du Lac Princess by Mary Anne Yarde is a unique perspective. This novel is book three in a series called The Du Lac Chronicles. Based on Arthurian legend, it is categorized as epic fantasy, but I feel this version of post-Arthurian Britain is more historically based than most, even though this period in history is notoriously difficult to find facts about. All in all, I enjoyed it tremendously. The emphasis on the family of Lancelot is fascinating, and the ties to Celtic mythology were greatly appreciated. The emphasis on the dual nature of the Church was done very well and added depth to the overall feeling of historical legitimacy. A story rich in depth and emotion, I recommend The Du Lac Princess to anyone interested in British history and Arthurian legend.

I enjoyed the portrayal of Amandine Du Lac. She is a strong woman in a very precarious situation. But no matter what the Church or others want her to believe, she knows what is true in her heart. The other characters are equally driven and complex. Some of them, like Sampson, are taken out of the pages of history, or like Mordred, from the annals of legend. The plot is good, based on house and family politics. The writing is great, aided by a lot of interesting, complicated, and colorful characters. I look forward to going back and reading the two previous books in this series. I think Mary Anne Yarde loves history and Arthurian legend as much as I do.

Ms. Yarde has flourished once again with her latest edition to the Du Lac Chronicles - "The Du Lac Princess".  The story was a brilliant sequel to her already internationally recognized series.  I could not wait to read this book to find out what happened to all the characters; especially the unique heroes of Merton and Armandine.  The Du Lac Princess (like her other books) was wonderfully written, and her storyline was superb.  Ms. Yarde’s research into Arthurian history was impeccable, and I was impressed again with Ms. Yarde’s ability to bring her characters to life with superb detail.  I am one of her many fans that hopes this series makes it to the big screen.  I highly recommend The Du Lac Princess, and all of Ms. Yarde’s books.  Thank you Ms. Yarde for another wonderful read!

War is coming and nothing can stop the man orchestrating everyone and everything to exterminate the du Lacs from the face of Earth. But the Keeper of the Blade has just emerged and he is flesh and blood, not just a myth. He will need the help of the du Lac brothers, that is if they don’t kill him first.

Amandine is rescued from certain death by Alan and kept alive. She is forced into captivity while Alan is away and tortured by monks all in the name of the Roman Church. “The Devil must be purged from her body and soul.” Alan returns (along with King Philippe and Mordred) who delivers swift punishment for Amandine’s mistreatment. King Philippe makes her his ward and she is safe, for now. For surely, her death will come, as all who are du Lacs.

Merton aka Galahad, believing his beloved Amandine is dead, vows revenge. Even though he is a crippled, one-armed man, he won’t rest until her killer is dead. He runs away from Brother Sampson and heads back to his brother, Alden. Along the way, he gets lost and an old Celtic woman finds him. She restores him back to health and teaches him many things, things Merton never knew about his father (Lancelot), Arthur and even Guinevere (yes, Arthur’s Guinevere).

Alden is at his wits end trying to run his kingdom, look after Merton, determine who is his enemy and who is his ally all while trying to keep war from crossing his borders. When he sends out a search party to find Merton, shock and remorse shake Alden to the core when they return. The Keeper of the Blade seeks his council and assistance as does a woman all of Briton thought long dead. Will the du Lac brothers unite under the same banner or will they kill each other with Mordred watching from the shadows?

I’ve been waiting months to read this book and when it finally came out, my expectations were high. The Du Lac Princess has a lot going on, between twice as many characters as in previous books and the multiple storylines, and I found myself re-reading passages to keep everything straight. I found it a little jarring to go from one storyline to the next, especially in the middle of a scene. This pulled me out of the story on several occasions, which I don’t believe was the author’s intention.

The dramatic tension was well done, though. While I didn’t care for the compounding obstacles Merton had to continually face, it all tied together by the end of the book. The dramatic tension between Alden and his brothers, especially leading up to the climatic conclusion, was spot-on. Lessons learned, betrayals revealed, grace and love unite to combat evil deeds all make this a must-read. Yarde breathes life into Arthurian legends and makes history come alive.

If you’re a fan of historical fiction, especially 6th century Briton, this is a must-read! Fans of Game of Thrones and The Vikings will love this book and will want to read the whole series.

Favorite Character/Quote: Amandine. What a brave woman she is. She’s lost the one man she’s ever truly loved and King Philippe is the man responsible. She’s tortured in the name of God by the Church and yet still maintains her dignity. She’s a du Lac, after all.

My Rating: 4 stars

Mary Anne Yarde's novels: THE DU LAC CHRONICLES, of which: THE DU LAC PRINCESS is the third CHRONICLE; continue to vividly captivate my mind and heart! The truth is, every book in this series is the work of an emphatically accomplished and educated author. Yarde continues to entertain, my every sense with her delightfully descriptive 6th century Briton, with each successive novel building upon the previous book's story. This story begins to gather all four sons, of the now deceased Lancelot Du Lac, together again. Budic, the oldest half-brother, has lost his Kingdom of Brittany, to his cousin Philip, now the puppet of Mordred Pendragon. He likes his wounds at Castle Aergol, in Dyfed, with his wife, Josephine. Garren Du Lac was lost at sea 10 years ago, and has just returned to Cerniw; where nobody seems to want or trust him. King Alden of Cerniw, once home to King Arthur and his Knights, is trying to keep his Kingdom and family safe. His only worry before was the Saxon invaders, but, now there is Mordred's army, across the sea in Brittany, to worry about, too. Merton, is off alone trying to find his way back to some semblance of his former self. It's not easy when a former warrior becomes crippled, and believes his lady love is dead, also. In this novel you will meet: the former Queen Guinevere; Alan, the son of a former Arthurian knight; Tegan, a Druid woman living alone in the woods; and Sampson, the monk, who will become one of Briton's earliest Saints. I'm thrilled that this series will continue for those of us who have become Du Lac fanatics!!! If you like historical fantasy, then you do not want to miss out on reading this series!!!!

I have been looking forward to this one after reading the first two. My favorite character has always been Merton and I couldn’t wait to find out more about him. In the second book, a lot happened in the story, and we see the true “devil” come out of Merton in order to save his loved ones. Unfortunately, the most tragic events occur, and it’s a wonder Merton somehow survived.

Now in this one, we follow Merton's journey as he seeks his revenge. Many new characters are introduced in this story, but I have to admit, my heart still stayed with Merton. The story has a satisfying ending, and I look forward to the next phase in this saga. I hope somehow, Merton learns to fight with his non-dominant hand and once again, becomes the warrior he has always been.

Having had been smitten by the previous two novels, this book was a must read. Like usually, it had a grip on me from the beginning. Amandine’s story is so moving and dramatic that I simply couldn’t put it down. As in the previous book, the story then switches between other characters’ points of view, but to me Amandine's was the most significant and touching. She and Merton not knowing that the other is actually alive made it so exciting to read on, as well as their stories of survival, of course. Amandine’s emotional and physical torment was described so well that I even shed tears while reading it. Also, the way with words is very inspiring.

I’m starting to be a big fan of Yarde’s work, that is why I was so excited to read her note in the end about that this will not be just a trilogy. I understand why she fell in love with the characters, and I can say that I did as well.

The third installment of what the author reveals will now be a series, is a romantic historical epic, meticulously researched and masterfully written. The sweeping landscapes and engrossing characters bewitch the reader. The depth of what is familiar continues to grow more tangled and twisted, friends becoming enemies, enemies aiding rivals, mercy when you expect brutality. The sons of Lancelot, setting aside slights and jealousies find common cause eventually in Merton's search for a love that will not be denied.
I have read the first two books in the series and The Du Lac Princess is everything I was hoping it would be, and better. The tale of the Pendragons and Du Lacs goes on ...
Must read for fans of fantasy fiction.

I have really enjoyed all of the novels in The Du Lac Chronicles, a great Arthurian series which tells the legend from the point of view of the sons of Lancelot and continues the legend beyond Arthur and Lancelot's deaths. I got ‘The Du Lac Princess’ on pre-order, when I knew it was being published. knowing that I wouldn't be disappointed and I wasn't.

This novel centres both on the youngest of the Du Lac brothers, Merton and the love of his life, Amandine, the Du Lac Princess. Merton is recovering from the terrible injuries he suffered at the hands of his enemies in Brittany and has gone into self imposed exile. Amandine meantime, is under sentence of death. Neither of the two lovers knows the other is alive and in the background lurks the malevolent Mordred Pendragon, all the ingredients required for a great plot and it is.

I won’t spoil this excellent book for readers, by giving the plot away, but can say I think it is the best yet of the Du Lac Chronicles. Very well done Mary Anne Yarde and I look forward to the next in the series with eager anticipation.

I have really loved this series and the books just keep getting better! This is a fantastic addition with vivid Arthurian scenes and brilliant characters. There is depth and complexity in the individual characters and the relationships between the different characters are very clever. The plot is exciting but it is the characters who make it impossible to put the book down. I enjoy that all the characters have human frailties. None are even close to perfect but that makes them more believable. They are driven by a wide range of emotions but many of their actions are derived from love. The author interweaves bits of history and Arthurian legend to create a tale of chivalry and dastardly deeds. Highly recommend this series but you must start at the beginning! I can't wait for the next book.

Book 3 is by far my favorite and another page turner. You know the story is really good when you can't wait to get to the end and yet afraid you will? In book 3 I finally got to see the Du Lac brothers united for once and the story just keep getting better. What makes Du Lac chronicles a real standout is the amount of details and background research the author put into her books. I'm so glad the author isn't stopping at a trilogy as originally planned. Looking forward to book 4....

I can't say enough good things about this series - it's absolutely fantastic. The writing is masterful and intelligent and the characters complex; I felt their pain, agony, and joy. My favorite in book 3 is Tegan, a mysterious old Druid with an even more mysterious cauldron. And now with the introduction of the Keeper of the Blade, I'm eager for the next installment. If you have any interest in Arthurian legend, grab all 3 books, you won't be disappointed.

I love the Du Lac Chronicles and this latest book is no exception. We pick up the story, with Armandine and Merton both believing one another to be dead. Armandine is friendless and alone in Brittany, while Merton is trying to find a way to Brittany in order to get his revenge on Phillip who has taken everything from him.
Merton is the feared Devil no more, he cannot hold a sword, let alone fight with one. The desire to get revenge is all that drives him to keep breathing and living. Even his close relationship with Alden is not holding up well under the strain of all that they have been through and the weight of the guilt that they both carry.
All is not as it seems though and Armandine and Merton both have challenges to face before they can find the truth about one another.
This is a fantastic and well written series with highly complex characters. I believe that Mary Anne Yarde had planned a trilogy, but I, for one, am glad to find that she is now planning on writing more than these three books. I'm sure that there is much more to come and I can't wait to find out what is going to happen.

The Du Lac Princess by Mary Anne Yarde has received a Chill with a Book Readers' Award.

"Very well written & a real page turner."

"The Du Lac saga continues in this book at a more rolling pace compared to the first volume.
A plot full of deception and the interaction between the characters is very real, although sometimes the introspective parts were rather lengthy."

Fascinated by King Arthur and his knights, I was immediately drawn to The Du Lac Princess series. This epic tale by the talented Mary Anne Yarde is flush with well-researched historical reference; it heightens the read. What starts out with action back scenes introduces the main characters. Leading the storyline are Amandine, the recipient of unthinkable, hair-raising torture, Tegan, the witty straightforward personality, Alan, Amandine’s rescuer who himself is subject to torture, the Roman Church monks who bestow the cruelty, King Philippe, Mordred, Merton, etc. A balance is created with the varying personalities that bring the human condition with all its expressed emotions to life. I particularly like how the monks—men of the cloth—were cast, which really heightens the narrative. So much of historical tragedy has be instigated or involved the church. It was to this detail and so much more that this talented writer adhered to history, lending to the authenticity of the read. There is nothing new about the themes, but then that can be said of all books and in saying that one looks for what is special, entertaining, the draw of this particular saga. It lies in the main theme, the actual writing of it, the thread that glues the story together revolving around Merton and his beloved Princess, Amandine. The is very little more compelling than lovers torn apart knowing they would fall victim of the unthinkable and in this division they were unaware that the other lived. Nor does the reader know how it will turn out and will the lovers reunite. No spoilers here but suffice it to say there is no lack of tension/conflict that drives the plot. Much has already been written about the storyline. What I particularly enjoyed was the balance of character qualities, the paradoxes that give authenticity to the human condition. This novel is replete with that great quality, which helps propel the story along at a smooth, interesting pace. Very well written and enjoyable.

With each book in this series I fall more in love the world and characters who live there. This part picks up where the last one left off, going back just enough to make it a standalone story. Amandine, is in a very bad situation, and no one is coming, because they think she is already dead. With what she goes through in the start of this story my hearts breaks. Will she survive, will they realize she is alive, can she keep the will to fight when she believes Merton is dead as well?

In addition to that there are new threads to the story and brilliant new characters added. Tegan and Alan quickly won me over and Sampson really grew on me in this installment. Budic, not so much LOL, didn’t I say that last time? There is a surprise appearance from a name I didn’t think would pop up. And OMG Josephine, that woman, I despise her.

The new thread with Alan has me thoroughly excited to see if it will be featured in upcoming parts and I so want to keep up with… I won’t list names because that might steal tension regarding who does and doesn't make it. Trust you want to read this. You want to read them all. This is my favorite series ever. I really, truly hope the next part will be coming soon.

Book 3 brought out a lot of heart wrenching emotions as I read of the horrific things that were done to Amandine. Even though this was fiction, the author states that she has done a good deal of research. Therefore, it made it even more heart wrenching to thing that people really suffered such treatment. Mary Anne Yarde did such a good job describing emotions that I could feel Mertio's pain - both emotional and physical. Amidst the evilness and cruelty, love rang supreme and that's always a nice "ahhhh" moment. It was nice to see the characters from the first two novels interacting with the book. A few new ones were touched upon so I'll be looking for them in the next book of the series. So many subplots within the main plot. If it had been a tv show, it could easily be called "Keeping up with the du Lacs" If you are a lover of historical novels and enjoy multiple layers that progress forward with each book, I highly recommend this series.

I can't get enough of the Du Lac chronicles! Merton had always been my favorite and I devoured this book, reading about his pain, love, bravery, and sacrifice. Mary Anne Yarde keeps on introducing more interesting characters in all her books, now I'm intrigued by Brother Sampson who played a more significant role in this book and Alan and Garrett who are likely to play a very important role in bringing down Modred. The adventure never ends. I love how characters are flawed, encompassing different gradations of good and bad. That's what makes each character realistic and interesting. Now I want the fourth book. I can't wait!

Mary Anne Yarde writes a grand portrayal on the historic backdrop of King Arthur and his knights.
The Pope sentences Princess Amadine Du Lac to death, a sentence King Phillippe must carry out in the name of the church. Revenge, power, and mercy control the timing of her execution. Amadine clings to life, but never hopes to have anything but an imprisoned existence. With her inner strength and memories of lost love, she lives as best can as the King’s prisoner. Mary Ann ties together the threads of the story in an exciting and unexpected conclusion.

Rich in detail with a stunning, realistic backdrop during the 6th century, I loved everything about this story. Yarde brings fresh life to the old Arthurian tales by setting the story within the realm of actual history. Lancelot Du Lac’s heirs are the focus of the entire series. The oldest of the four brothers, Budic is surly and irresponsible with a tendency for cruelty. Though he ruled a kingdom, he has been overthrown by a bastard cousin, Phillipe, with the help and guidance of the evil Mordred Pendragon. For the people of the kingdom they learned, too late, that their lives could go from bad to worse. The second brother is Garren who was lost at sea years ago but turned up near the end of the last installment. I found his backstory interesting and was happy to learn more about him. Next is Alden who starred in the first book but is now struggling with grief and regrets, possibly more than he can handle. Then there’s everyone’s favorite, The Devil, Merton. Though most of the world believes him dead we know that he barely survived and is crippled for life - not only physically. He also is racked with guilt for not being able to protect the woman he loved.
An amazing story which I would love to give more than five stars to. Yarde brings the times and the adventure to life with her compelling prose. There are so many secrets revealed and a few more hinted at that I can’t wait to see what happens. Very well-written and highly recommended!

I love this story and I love these characters (although there are one or two I would like to see meet a horrible end).

The Intrigue begins on page one and doesn’t let up. The storyline from each character’s point of view compels you forward, moves you through their web of survival and need for vengeance. From the moment I began, I didn’t want to stop reading, all the way through to the heart-stopping ending.

This story should be made into a tv series, I would love to see these characters come to life on-screen.

The house of Du Lac lives in my heart, and I can’t wait for books 4 and 5 and 6... keep them coming.

They get better and better!

Book 3 continues the story of Merton and Amandine, but brings into play also, the stories of Budic, his bride Josephine, Alden, and a surprise character. As the presence in the kingdoms of Mordred Pendragon becomes known, the idea of defeating him is starting to blossom. First, however, Merton has to accept that battles are won not only by brawn but by brains. Then they can begin planning not only how to rid themselves of Mordred but also to secure Briton's security.

Reading this book was hard because your heart breaks for both Merton and Amandine, who think the other is dead. Finishing the third book made me feel happy because I know there's another installment in the epic waiting! So very highly recommended!

Wonderful series and this book is even beter than the last two!

The story of Merton and Amandine continues, but it's a real heart-wrencher of a tale. The battles they have already faced come back to haunt them in the worst ways and the descriptions of what they go through are harrowing.

Give yourself a good long afternoon snuggled up in front of the fire to read this book as it a real page turner. You definitely won't want to put it down!

My favorite of Mary Anne Yarde’s Du Lac Series so far! I love the added characters, especially the canny Tegan. The sparing between she and Merton alone is worth the read. My heart was in my throat for Merton and Amandine all the way through, but this installment is full of richly drawn characters and dialog. Yarde is a master. This volume does stand well on it’s own, but if you love everything “Knights of the Round Table” you’ll want to be sure to go back and read the other two books as well.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series, so far. Great characters, a story that flowed from the beginning to the end, a fascinating tale of Arthurian times and the characters of the age, a look at religion, its faults and its doctrin, and a beautiful love story that grows and grows.

Loved it

**A copy of this book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.**

When the author asked me to review the third book in her series, I am fairly certain you could hear my very unprofessional squeal of delight a mile away. I couldn’t wait to read the next installment of the Du Lac Chronicles.

The story continues the tale of the Du Lac family: Merton, Alden, Annis, the returned Garren and Amandine. When we last left all our characters, Merton was fighting for his brother Alden against Philippe while Garren had suddenly returned from being “lost at sea” for the last several years. The story starts shortly after the last book “The Du Lac Devil” ended. Merton is being tortured and is killed or so we are lead to believe. Amandine, overcome with grief, collapses. She is given to the Abbey to be nursed back to health. They instead abuse her. They shave her head, beat her and tell her she is possessed by Satan because she has lain with the Du Lac Devil–Merton. She is locked in a small cell with a straw mat and rats for company. As the story continues, Alden receives a letter letting him know that “Galahad” has left the city where he had been staying. Alden fears for what Galahad will do when gets where he is going. Alden sends Garren and some of Merton’s old men to find him and bring him back. They eventually find him and return him home to Alden. Amandine is rescued from the squalor she is living in and nursed back to health on the order of Philippe. Will we find out what happened to Merton? Will Amandine even get out from under Philippe’s thumb?

Oh, this book!! I gave me all the feels. I was left shocked by what happened to Amandine while she was supposed to be under the loving care of the monks in the Abbey. Sadden when the author killed off one of my favorite characters. Relived when everything ended up absolutely perfect in the end. This book was just like I wasn’t even reading a new book. It carried on just as if I had just turned that page and started a new chapter. This third installment flows very nicely into the storyline. I am waiting with bated breath for the next book. I am so excited that the author has decided to write more than just three books in this series. I have fallen in love with all of the characters and cannot wait to find out what else she has in store for our heroes.

A lot of story in this book!

Certainly look forward to the next book! Love the story. I’m glad to read there are more to come as I started to be disappointed as I came closer to the end and realized there wouldn’t be enough pages to have any sort of ending. 😀
