All I’ve wanted to do is keep my family safe. All I’ve wanted was to protect them from the evils of the world… but I’ve failed. I’ve failed so badly, and now all of them are suffering… I’m suffering…
We’ve lost so many, and now that we’ve lost one of our own, I don’t know how to keep going. I don’t know how to protect them anymore. But I need to stay strong, I need to keep fighting because I would rather die than let another one of my family members get hurt.
We need to get to the Taoree Independents camp in order to save my brother. Supposedly they can protect us from all the turmoil, and they have tools to help Wes… or at least that’s what Orrean says. He also says that they want to fight back, but I don’t see how we could ever fight back against all of the monsters that have taken over our world.
Put yourself in my shoes and tell me there’s a better way. Tell me there’s a better option to save my brother, to keep my family safe. If you made it to that camp, would you just cower and hide, or would you stand up and fight back?
Independents is Book Two in the Taoree Trilogy and is meant to be read as part of a series. This book ends on a cliffhanger, but there is a promise of a happy ending at the end of the trilogy.
***WARNING: This book is recommended for ADULTS ONLY. It is rather gruesome, so if you don’t like violence, death, blood, and the like, don’t read it. There’s also explicit language, as well as romance and graphic sexual content between two male characters.***
Michele is married to an awesome guy that puts up with her and all the burnt dinners she makes—hey, sometimes characters are a bit distracting, and who doesn’t plot when they’re supposed to be cooking? They live together in Baltimore, Maryland with two little monsters, a three-legged princess, a four-legged goofball, and a cutie with giant ears (aka their two kids, their two cats, and their dog). She hopes to rescue another cat soon, and if her hubby wouldn’t kill her, she’d get more than one… and maybe a few more dogs as well.
She loves creating worlds filled with lots of love, chosen family, and of course, magic, but she also likes making the characters fight for that happy ending. She hopes to one day write all the stories in her head—even if there are too many to count!

OMG, I can't take it! I need book 3 now. I feel like my heart has been torn to shreds. Michele Notaro definitely knows how to mess with our emotions. I spent most of the book missed at Jeremy, then I was so happy when he got his head out his but, and now I'm just lost. This book was an amazing emotional rollercoaster ride. One of the best series of the year. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
The first Taoree book started kinda slow, but this one was a race from beginning to end. I love the story the author is telling here, and because she's not afraid to make bold choices in what happens to her characters, as a reader you're fearing for everyone. It kept me literally up till late in the nigh because I wanted to know what happened next...and of course it ended on the mother of all cliffhangers! But I knew that coming in, so it's okay.
The romance is slow burning and sweet, though as a reader you want to smack Jeremy every now and then because he's so freaking dense...But I loved where the romance was going. I especially loved the family and friendship in this book, even more than in the first book. It balances out the gore and bloody stuff.
The writing is great and fits the pace of the plot, with zero spelling and grammar errors, always a pleasant experience.
Fantastic read. Can't wait for the next book.
(I received an ARC and wrote this review voluntarily)
I liked the 1st book in the series better. In this 1, I felt like there was too much standing around & talking about love & soulmates. Became too soap operary. The 1st book kept me on my toes for its entirety. That didn’t happen for me in this 1. When action actually does happen in this book, however, it’s SO GOOD. A complaint I do have is that new technologies/super powers keep popping up in this book & it felt like I was being told “we’ve never mentioned this before but it’s convenient to the plot line” like Jeremy can use his powers to attack people. Ok? Then why doesn’t he? He can heal people? Ok so at the end of this book he gets hurt in battle... why can’t he heal himself? Also out of nowhere there was a moment of discovery Because Jeremy shouldn’t be able to heal other people that aren’t related to him but he can. The whole reasoning behind not being able to save colt was because he wasn’t related. So does that mean Jeremy could’ve in fact saved Colton? Idk there are just too many powers and techs thrown in that I don’t feel are explained well. Hoping if I keep reading it’ll make more. Also also... I don’t think the 2 main characters have chemistry. Colt was 10 x better and I believed that plot line. Orrean and Jeremy just don’t seem that authentic to me.

It was difficult to read the first half, because Jeremy is terrible to Orrean.
I have nothing against Colt, but I didn't understand how he and Jeremy had this love for the ages. They were only boyfriends for a short time! How can that compare to having a soulmate, the other half of your soul?!
I believe that Jeremy would still be with Colt if he hadn't died, no matter how drawn he was to Orrean. Colt is mentioned waaay too many times for me to believe otherwise. Orrean deserved much, much better. He was my favorite character in the trilogy.
Thankfully, I didn't quit like I wanted and hung in there, as the second half improved considerably. The action kept my interest, even if it was hard to read with all the bloodshed and gore. 🩸🫣
On to the next book!
Edited to Add: Book 3 was a DNF, due to all the horrific violence and the many good people who die. I’m a romance reader, not a horror fan! 😧
Not as interesting as the first one, i thought. And the hair thing is big in this one and it's really strange. It's the same as human hair except it moves and has nerves... okay. Feasible. Kind of like he has a million little bug antennas or tiny sea creature tentacles on his head. Sure. And it's a sex thing. um...okay. But also it's somehow a main artery too and does not clot and they will bleed to death if it's ever damaged... and they haven't even found a way to stitch it up or cauterize it successfully so they are just going to die... but it's still as thin as human hair when not braided despite having so much blood running through it... what? How is that supposed to work? Sorry, that part just doesn't compute.

I was waiting anxiously for Independents to get here and I was not disappointed! Jeremy and the rest of the family are still trying to get to the Independents camp but they still face many challenges. Everything seems to be working against them but they make it but there's no rest when a war is going on. Independents is action packed and emotional to the end and what a way to leave us sitting on the edge of our seats! I can not wait for the final installment!
First of all, Michele how could you?! My poor heart cannot with this. Second of all, I am so glad I'm actually reading this now that it's fully published, because if I'd had to wait for the sequel with an ending like this I would have rioted
Warnings: Of course there is more violence and death in this story but not nearly as much as in the first book. Major cliffhanger; you are therefore warned. However, please keep in mind that the author has stated that there will be an HEA in the end.
Wow.....what an ending or shall I say cliffhanger! I am at a lost for what will happen next. However, I am pretty sure I know who the mole is. Regardless, I cannot wait to see what the author has in store next. Especially since it seems like all doom and gloom with no light at the end of the tunnel.
This book picks up practically right after the first book. This story, as you can probably guess has to do with the Independents and their fight against Thelonious and his army. In addition, J learns and eventually comes to accept his connection with Orr. So, yes J is an ass and this is where a lot of the angst comes into play.
I really enjoyed all the creativity and thought that went into making this wonderful story. Not only am I invested in the MCs, but the secondary characters as well. The author continues to do an amazing job keeping the facts in order, along with the world building. The only thing that slightly bothered me was some do the repetitiveness in the story.
Even with the author stating that the book is coming out late 2017, and even with it being October, it's still going to drive me nuts waiting. What is patience again?!?
I absolutely couldn't put this book down! After the first in the series I was already salivating for this book and it absolutely didn't disappoint. This book was full of twists and turns, drama, romance, and pulse pounding edge of your seat moments. If you aren't reading this series I don't know what you're waiting for.
Jeremy and his family are making their way toward the Independents camp. They need to be there as soon as possible if they want to save Wes’ life (J’s little brother). Meanwhile, Jeremy is still grieving and refuses to accept his bond with Orrean, making them both suffer. While trying to understand everything about the war that’s raging in the world and to find a way to win it, Jeremy has another war to battle, an internal war with his heart.
Independents is book 2 in the Taoree Trilogy by Michele Notaro, and it was as good as the first one. In this book, we follow our favorite mismatched family making their way in the Independents base and further into the war against Emperor Thelonius’ army and madness. Jeremy is still grieving and learning that his bond with Orrean is deeper than what he thought, and it’s disturbing him more than anything. He rejected it, rejected Orrean and shut himself out. I admit I wanted to slap him once or twice…ok a lot of times, but I could understand why it was so difficult for him to accept this new situation.
The plot and the story were very good. The book starts right after the end of book 1 (Taoree), and we discover more about the war, the resistance, and more about Orrean’s life. What he’d been through, what he had to do for the resistance, and what he did and still does for Jeremy. I have a huge crush on Orrean. I loved the universe that Michele Notaro created. The characters aren’t shallow; they evolve with the story, and we see them grow. I loved that even with all the horrendous things they have to see and live, they still have time to be a family, to laugh, and to banter.
The book is divided between their way toward the Independents camp, their life there, and Jeremy and Orrean’s bond. There was a lot of anger, pain, and angst between them but also purely beautiful moments full of love and tenderness.
I was completely hooked in the story and couldn’t stop reading until the end. I’m addicted to this series. I have to tell you that you’ll scream like I did with the huge cliffhanger at the end.
When Avatar meets The Walking Dead—you have Taoree Trilogy.
I've read a whole trilogy in just one day. And I really love it. Honestly, science fiction is definitely NOT my genre, especially when it comes together with wars and deaths. But I love Michele Notaro's books and wanted to give this series a try and I just decided to wait until the story was fully finished. I've seen a warnings about cliffhangers and I'm sure most readers would agree with me that cliffhangers are evil, especially when the next book in series is not out yet. I loved the main characters and their family as well. Jeremy was easy to relate to. He is not a superhero, but a simple human, who just wants to save his friends and family. And does everything possible to achieve that. Orrean is an example of an amazing leader and partner. And I wish everyone to have such a fantastic family. There is only one thing I really DIDN'T like.
“Our planet’s ecosystem is similar to Earth’s, so we evolved similarly, only Taoree are a few million years older than humans.”
As someone who enjoys apocalyptic, sci-fi/alien invasion stories, this series started out with a lot of promise. Unfortunately, the storytelling wasn’t as sharp as I prefer.
At times the storyline felt immature, other times this read like a horror with the amount of gore and blood on page. The sex (when it finally happened) was not what I was expecting from an alien/human connection.
Zombie apocalypse/post apocalyptic War of the worlds/walking dead YA feel to the writing Gay romance Soul mates Intense survival action Blood/gore Cliffhanger ending
I would have preferred the romance between the human and the alien to have began in book one, and continue to grow into a deeper connection in this story. Waiting over 70% of the story for Jeremy to pull his head out of his ass and love Orrean was really frustrating.
His purple eyes were filled with tears again and I watched as his double eyelids blinked across, then down, and a tear fell from his eye.
Ending in ANOTHER cliffhanger?! I doubt I will be continuing with this series.
It was kind of hard to rate this book as I spent the first half of the book being irritated. I totally understood that Jeremy was angry after Colt died and that he withdrew from everyone, but the way he ran hot and cold with Orrean was getting really old. And all of his friends (and himself) agreed that he's an ass and oblivious to things and even when he knows he's hurting Orr he just can't be civil and just take some time for himself. In the other half of the book the book picks up the pace again, even if Jeremy still is oblivious to the others in so many ways that he almost comes of as egotistical. Maybe because his love with Colt was so uncomplicated. I love that we get to know Orrean and the Taorees better and I'm really curious about Wes. The book ends with a cliffhanger and I really want to know what happens to them.
FML the way this one ended is just too much for me. I seriously need book 3 at this very moment because I am not alright!! Just woah, why would you do that to me Michele Notaro lol. I really like this series. There is just so much going on. We are back with the group still trying to make their way to the independent camp while fighting off ferals and Taoree's. Not only do they have those obstacles to overcome they also struggle with keeping the Qiren from melting Wes's brain. Needless to say the journey is not an easy one. No matter where they end up, they do everything always together, protecting one another, because they are family. Jeremy, Wes, Cal, Mandy and Orrean will grow on you and all you want is to see them make it through this war together. I NEED BOOK 3!!!!
While nowhere near as dark as Quil Carter's Fallocaust, these books do justice to a post apocalyptic world overrun by Ferals (nano-zombies), Taoree (hot aliens), and "giant-Quiren-spider-crab-things" (which are just like what they sound). The plot advances, the romance advances (slowly cuz he's still getting over his dead boyfriend, the elder brother of his best friend character) and clues are dropped for new romances for Wes and Cal (unfortunately not to each other). Tenj, the cute Taoree kid joins the family, Innuku makes an appearance as does Jeremy's Taoree superpowers. Ends with an awesome cliffhanger that ensures you jump into the next book. Which is were I'm off to now.
I have been waiting patiently for the second installment of the Taoree series and it did not disappoint! It picks up where we left off in the first book. It was great to see Jeremy finally start to warm up to Orrean and accept the relationship. We finally get to know Wes a bit more and I really like him! I was hooked from the very first page and hated to see the story end. It was a fantastic story and I can't wait for the third book in the series!!
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
This is such a beautifully written sci-fi/fantasy mash-up! The author has a gift for world building and for character development. The second in a trilogy that must be read in order because they take off right where the previous one left us. It would have been agony (but worth it) to have waited when these came out 4 years ago. The relationship between these Taoree and humans fight on the side of the Independents absolutely stun me in their vulnerability and the strength they have to continue when every moment seems a struggle is powerful.
I loved the first part and i was so excited for the second but the first half of the book pissed the hell outta me i was so annoyed i felt like i would burst at any point.
Jeremy was selfish ***hole who didnt care about orrean he kept hurting that poor soul again and again whenever he wanted comfort or anything he went to orrean and then threw him away like a trash i dont give a frekin hell about him being sweet in the second half of the book what he did was so frekin horrible.
I’m quickly typing this up because I MUST continue with book 3 ASAP. This trilogy is amazing, I have no words to describe it. I thought the first book was perfect but book 2 is even better! Handsome aliens, apocalyptic war, bloody fights, humor just at the right time, and amazing hair sex, I mean sex. What else could you possibly need? Go read these books right now!
Ok Jeremy got in my last nerves... I really didn't like him at all during this book.... I didn't like the way he treated Orr at all.... He was selfish and just not likeable .... Yea I understood he was hurting over Colt but he just took it to the exreme...I hope he redeems himself in the final book .... As far as the plot it's getting better....I hope more comes out about the brothers past.... Off to book 3
Could not put this one down! Was full of heartache and so much danger and excitement as the fight between the humans and the aliens continued, with the group finally making it to the resistance. The group has suffered losses and also gained strong alliances, but will they be enough to stop the evil emperor? I can’t wait to hear what happens next!!
This has less action and more drama and angst than the first book. Orrean is so sweet and lonely and, although I understood where Jeremy was coming from, he was terrible to Orrean; I felt so bad for him. Tension is high and horrible people are horrible. There is a mole and so trust is questionable. The cliffhanger is a doozy so be sure to have time for the last book!
I loved this book more than the first! It had plenty of angst with much of the focus on Jeremy and Orrean’s developing relationship but there was less struggling for survival since they were in the Independent base. Sometimes Jeremy frustrated me but with all the upheaval in his life and the loss in the first book, I understood. I’m starting the 3rd book right away!
I was anxiously awaiting book 2 in the Taoree Trilogy Book and Independents didn't disappoint! This was such a great fast paced book full of action, humor and emotions.
Now I will await book 3! It can't come soon enough!
This one hit the ground running and didn't stop for the entire book. Truly enjoyed watching the relationship between Jeremy and Orr grow and develop but could have smacked Jeremy at a few places along the way...lol. Gotta love a cliffhanger done as well as this one. Can't wait for Book 3.
I thoroughly enjoyed book 2, it's another brilliant read. I found myself totally absorbed in the world created, which is full of amazing characters. We are advised that the book ends on a cliffhanger and I really, really can't wait for book 3! Love this series so much!
Wow so these books have me hooked. I need 3 right away. I loved the continuation of Jeremy, Wes and Cal, and Orreans story. I highly recommend these books and this author.
