Hunt&Cam4Ever #2

Dancing Men

Rate this book
An ancient burial urn, empty for millennia, is suddenly not so empty.

Detective Lieutenant Hunter Dane probes a murder in the dark corridors underneath the Natural History Museum. To solve the complex case, Hunter needs Camden Snow, the brilliant, “no limits” Dom who'd helped him unravel a very peculiar, and very personal, murder.

But Cam's ready to kill Hunt, himself. Their intense D/s relationship that began in a playroom, ended up in an emergency room.

“If you want to be with me, you'll have to do more than show up,” Cam said. “You’ll have to work for this, Hunter.”

“What work would that be?” Hunter was ready to perform any penance Cam gave him.

“You’re the champion puzzle-solver and ace detective. Unravel a mystery.”

“What mystery?”

“Me."

A 70k police procedural for those who like puzzles and power dynamics with a liberal dose of M/M heat.

I'm just expanding on my somewhat short sentence here: MF on-page sex betwen Hunter and random lady-sub from the club, because he has "Dom-needs".... (While Cam is spanking and touching another male sub BTDUBBS!)
Also: why the FUCK does he (Hunter) make a BIG point out of the crush on that other lady (a subby girl) from his police squad?

Seriously, I'm not interested in reading about one of the MCs having sex or romantic inclinations with other people, when the romantic connection with the other MC has been somewhat established.

As Shile pointed out:
"If it is MM it is MM, I don't think you can find an out-of-nowhere MM sex scene in an MF book."

Wouldn't it be great if you could though?!?

Whilst I didn't love this as much as Matchstick Men or On His Knees this was still a solid read.

Focusing more on the mystery of the urns and the police work than the relationship between Hunter and Cam, I was a little lost at times by the unfolding plot. Yes, it appears well researched and was definitely intriguing, but there was also a lot of information to sort through and remember. (Which, I'll admit, I'm not always the best at!)

I loved the glimpses we got of them working together and then being together but after all was said and done it wasn't enough for me. I really just wanted more of Hunt and Cam. Especially after the bomb got dropped, which had me gasping. Omg. Break my heart why don't you.

But I still look forward to the next one and seeing how it all plays out.

Actual Review: 3.5 Stars (Aaaaannnnddd there's an unpopular opinion if I've ever seen one)

This is technically the third book in the A Hunter Dane Investigation series, On His Knees and Matchstick Men being the first two, which I absolutely loved. I was so excited to start this third book because of how well written the first two were, but Dancing Men kinda fell flat. These books went from some of my favorites of the year to "meh" and I'm a little disappointed.

First, let me say, I adore Hunter and Cam. There was so much connection and chemistry between them in the first two books and I was keeping my fingers crossed that they'd continue on with that at the beginning of this book to give something sweet to build on. Where murder is inevitable, I expected a little bit of cushion before the blow. I didn't get that.

And despite how much I loved the characters, I was having a hard time following the plot. I didn't have the slightest problem with the first two books, but this one seemed like there was too little information. I get that it's a mystery, but even the first few pages left me confused. Adira frequently described specific pieces of a scene or something Hunter was doing without giving background information, like describing the setting or even just telling us where Hunter was. Those are important details. I didn't realize until several pages in that Hunter wasn't at home and he was actually several hundred miles away in a different state. In another scenario, Hunter is playing cards. Adira talks about him knocking his knuckles on the table and uses language specific to playing poker. I was completely lost and had to reread that section twice.

Furthermore, the beginning of this book starts with a note from the author that includes a claim that this book can be read as a standalone. You're welcome to make an attempt, but it is my strong opinion that this book can not be read as a standalone. I took a two weeks break between reading Matchstick Men and Dancing Men. The book opens with adjectives upon adjectives with some character names thrown in. I had to re-read the first few pages before I remembered all of the characters and could put two and two together. Had I not known who they were already, this book would have been 8x harder to follow. I really don't recommend reading it as a standalone. Instead, read the series in order. The first two books were phenomenal and this one was good.

Despite all of the negatives in this book, I still liked it. Adira August is an amazing writer and she does a fantastic job of creating suspense and pulling you into a story. The chemistry between Hunter and Cam is just as strong in this book as the rest of the series and I was happy to follow along with more of their story. I wouldn't necessarily call this a romance novel, but it is about love, acceptance, and trust. Adira does a great job of expressing that without saying it outright.

Even though I had a lot of negative things to say, this was still a good book. Take my review with a grain of salt. At the time of this review, Dancing Men has a 4.39 average review and many other readers are raving about this book. This series is worth the read, but please read them in order!

Review by The Blogger Girls.

This is technically the third installment of the Hunt/Cam story, with On His Knees being the first introduction. These two have been explosive from the get go, with some very unique qualities. Hunter is the intense Detective, who happens to be a switch, and Cam is the much younger professional skier who is a very unbending Dom. Even though we learned that Cam more than has what it takes to take care of Hunt, events in the last book have left them somewhat adrift. Cam is now recovering from his injury, and Hunt is MIA and trying to deal with everything that happened. You most definitely need to read these in order, and while On His Knees introduces these two, it is more important that you read Matchstick Men to really be caught up with where these guys are now.

After a bumpy start, Hunt and Cam are reunited, though they still have a ways to go. Hunt is still trying to come to grips with what he wants/needs from Cam, and he still has the side that needs to Dom other submissives, though they tend to be female. Anything he got from subbing to other doms has never been about sex, until Cam. Without Cam, he has tried to find other ways to deal, mainly with the use of a masseuse, though that doesn’t quite take care of everything.

When Hunt is tasked with leading a new investigative team to solve a murder, he handpicks the members and brings Cam on board to handle the techy stuff. They worked really well together in the past, and that continues here. It also has the benefit of giving Cam something else to focus on other than his skiing career which seems to be coming to an end, though not for the obvious reasons.

This story focuses quite a bit on the murder, mystery and investigation, while the other issues are played out as well. The writing is fabulous, the details all falling into place like a well-worn puzzle. There are a few pieces missing here and there, but the guys manage to find most of them to complete it in the end. The mystery of the urns was very interesting and you can tell a lot of thought and research went into bring that part of the story to life.

I have to express again what a unique relationship these guys have. They are still really discovering a lot of it and tweaking things here and there as adjustments are required. They show confidence in one aspect, and vulnerability in the other, and I love watching them try to figure things out for themselves as well as each other. These two are really complex characters, and what they have just works so well. Matchstick Men was nominated as best BDSM for 2017 on Goodreads, and I can’t agree more. It won’t be for everyone, but if you like your BDSM that ventures a bit from the norm, I highly recommend you give this series and this author a try. I am hooked and cannot wait for the next installment, or whatever else Ms. August comes up with!

4.5 stars - oh Hunter & Cam are brilliant together, like two bulls fighting to take the lead. As Hunter discovered more about Cam he came to understand the depth of Cams mind and motivation. As the two began to work together in Hunters new team the depth of their respect deepened. Cams fears began to surface, but this time Hunter made the call ... You’re not leaving ! Of course there was a crime to solve and high levels of cleverness and plot.. but I’m all about these two LOL ... what a great find this series is 😎

To say this book starts with a bang would be a gross understatement. When the first chapter ends on ‘I’m the man who killed your daughter’ you know you’re in for one hell of a ride.

Of course, Dancing Men turning out to be a thrilling, heart stopping, and unputdownable book didn’t come as a real surprise — after all, I read both Matchstick Men and its prequel On His Knees not too long ago and was mesmerized by both.

What I love and admire most in these stories is the multiple layers in both Cam and Hunter’s personalities and, as a result, their interactions. Cam may be the badass, uncompromising, and all demanding Dom a lot of the time, when not in Dom-mode he’s also a young man, still trying to find his way and not altogether sure where he might be going.

Hunter on the other hand is very much in control of his life and, apparently, his emotions. When it comes to his job he is in full control of both himself and those working with and under him. But, as controlling as he is, he has this need to surrender…totally. Therefore submitting to Cam, who demands his all from him, is exactly what Hunter needs.

On the surface this is a story containing two mysteries. There’s the ever more confusing riddle as to what exactly is going on with the urns. And then there’s Cam’s demand that Hunter figures out exactly what Cam’s story is. But, to me, there was a third and maybe most intriguing conundrum; can two men who are perfect together find the courage and trust to surrender to everything that pulls them together, despite valid reasons to keep their distance, and doubts about any possible future.

The story gives us a heady combination of intrigue, mystery, emotion, and mind-blowing (both for the characters and the reader) sex. As much as I wanted to speed read my way through this story so that I’d know the answers to all the questions it posed, I forced myself to take it slowly. I wanted to understand what was going on, I needed to feel the emotional highs and lows, and more than anything else, I wanted to get to know Hunter and Cam better.

You’ll need to pay close attention while reading Dancing Men, especially when it comes to the mystery of the urns which has its origins more than a century before the present day, and involves quite a few players. I can only imagine the amount of research that must have gone into this part of the story and I’m more than impressed with how this mystery unfolded and both the answers and outcome I encountered near the end.

As for Cam’s secrets, they wrecked me. Initially I was heartbroken, unwilling to believe what I’d read or that it could be true. But that was before I recognised the beauty of this shocking revelation; accepting and learning to live with it is the ultimate commitment both men can give to each other and as such a glorious thing.

Finally there’s the matter of Cam and Hunter needing to learn to trust both each other and themselves. They are irresistibly drawn to each other, perfect together, but is that enough to overcome Cam’s doubts about the future and Hunter’s conviction that he’s incapable of relationships? Can Cam trust Hunter not to walk away again and is Hunter brave enough to concede that staying with Cam doesn’t mean giving up on himself?

Yes, I’m fully aware I’m being horribly vague in the previous paragraphs, but revealing any more detail would be cruel towards those who haven’t read this book yet. The various journeys in this book should be enjoyed without preconceptions or expectations.

It has to be said, Hunter Dane and Cameron Snow have joined my short but exquisite list of Doms and subs I adore. The dynamic between them is as exciting as it is beautiful; perfection without abiding to any preconceived rules or expectations. Yes, their sex scenes are hot and imaginative beyond words, but it is so much more than that. BDSM is often more about the mind than the body and these two men prove that time and again. They don’t follow any rules except their own, make up their relationship to be what they both need and want and, in the process become real, convincing me of their perfection together.

Long story short: Dancing Men was everything I hoped it would be, and then some. I strongly recommend you read these books if you enjoy well written, imaginative, and not for the faint of heart BDSM stories. You’ll love these books if you like well plotted and intriguing mysteries. But, most of all, you’ll lose yourself in this world if you are looking for a couple to infiltrate your heart and take up residence there. I for one don’t think there will ever come a time when I’m not ready for more Hunter and Cam. Consider me addicted.

DANCING MEN

Having read the two previous books, On His Knees and Matchstick Men, thanks to being prompted by a very dear author friend of mine, I had already pre-ordered Dancing Men. Imagine my utmost delight when Ms. August emailed me and asked if I’d be interested in an Advance Review Copy of her new work. Duh! But of course, mon cher.

This being the third book in the series, I was already familiar with the two MC’s and thirsting for some more Hunt and Cam, and in this the book delivers in spades, and more. These two characters deliver an action packed ride, never boring and always intense and always hold true to their personas. They don’t veer off making you go ‘huh?’ Two strong alpha types, testing each other’s limits to see who comes out the winner. One of the beautiful things in this book is to see how their relationship starts to mature and become a real relationship, not just a friends with bennies thing.

Freakin’ awesome!

THE CHARACTERS

Hunter Dane:

Hunter Dane was at least 6’2,” which she hadn’t seen in the diner where he’d always been sitting. He was lean and well-muscled, like an athlete, not a gym bunny. The head of a black panther covered most of his right pec. Golden eyes. A paw, claws digging into flesh, rounded his right biceps. On the left, the panther’s tail wrapped around his arm just below the shoulder.

Sexy, hot, dark and handsome Hunter Dane. A photographer’s model who had used his stunning good looks, posing for romance book covers and other modeling gigs, to pay his way through college, is the ultimate alpha male. Inaccessible, not making intimate emotional connections with anyone, always using sex to simply release his tensions whether as a top with women or as willing, submitting masochist sub with men. Except for the one he was drawn to like a moth to flame. Cam. Cameron Caulfield Snow. His ultimate downfall.

Cameron Caulfield Snow – ‘Cam’:

I was looking for Cam. Camden Caulfield Snow. Earner of five Gold and two Silver winter Olympic medals, his classic blond beauty graced a billion drink cups and a thousand Tumblr blogs - a Norse god in the guise of unpretentious youth… A gentle soul morphed with a supremely competitive, athletically gifted, Alpha male… Only his steel blue eyes gave evidence of the Dom who took whomever he wished, whatever way he wanted, with a look and a nod.
From:On His Knees, Hunt&Cam4ever, Book 1, Adira August

Strikingly handsome, twenty three year old Camden Snow. Multi gold winning Olympic athlete, an athlete at the very top of his Olympic winter sport, a Norse God of a man, all golden blond with a beard to match, all muscles and 100% alpha dom. When you subbed for Cam, you subbed at his complete whim. No safewords, no hard limits, no prevarications. He alone would determine your limits, what you wanted and he could read you like the back of his hand. And there was one man he had been waiting for, the one man he wanted most of all. Hunter Dane. A true Dom/sadist.

THE STORY

So here’s the amazing thing about Adira August: she gives you a story!

No really, there’s a story here, actually two stories. There’s the love story that is Hunt and Cam and then there’s the story in which all this develops, the whodunit of a murder in a museum, with the backdrop of ancient burial urns from millennia artifacts from India, an old turn of the 20th Century love story with a family drama wrapped in a scandal. This is seriously good story telling, no kidding. I couldn’t put this down.

The love story between Hunt and Cam is a beauty to behold. The way these two alpha men come into their own with each other is extremely well crafted and remember, Hunt was given a task: unravel the mystery that is Cam. I want to know your reaction to this. Please let me know. I know my reaction and rarely have I had this happen to me in a book.

And then there is the adult portion of the story. Holy Cow, Batman! These are some of the hottest, most intense BDSM, Sadist/Masochist, D/s scenes I’ve ever read. Sit down, buckle up, and shut up! Just enjoy! There is one BDSM scene that is rarely seen in print in this story and the way Ms. August gets into it, describes it, goes into the feelings and sensations? Wow! Just wow! Only someone who has experienced this knows that it is spot freakin’ on! Take a bow, Ms. August.

I literally read this in one day, non-stop, fixated, just getting up to get some munchies and adult beverages every once in a while. Yeah. That’s pretty darn good for me, I’m not a read it in one sitting kind of guy. To me a book is like a fine candy, or wine, something to be slowly savored and enjoyed. This was a Thanksgiving Day, burst at the seams, joyful binge.

THE WRITING

Ms. August’s writing is silky smooth, well constructed and utterly enjoyable. The prose simply flows, allowing for an easy, effortless enjoyment of the story. This is what makes good writing, when the reader can just get lost in the story and become one with the characters.

The attention to detail is phenomenal. Every police/investigative detail is very well done. The secondary characters are well developed in their own right, so much so that I would love to read more about some of them in other, future books.

Put Your Dancing Shoes On!

I am still in love with this series. Was this my favorite book so far? No. That distinction still belongs to Matchstick Men because that book, so far this year, is incomparable as far as I'm concerned. I gave it 5 stars and it was a hard act to follow. So why only 4 Goodreads stars on this one? I'm not really sure I can put my finger on it, but I'll give it a shot.

I'm still enjoying the MCs. I was glad that Hunter didn't stay too far in his head for too long. The same thing goes for Cam when secrets were revealed and he struggled with ... well, what he was struggling with. I won't spoil it. The mystery was good, but it didn't captivate me like last time. I never really understood why The Big Bad did it. I'm not sure we got an explanation beyond "So and so did it and this is how."

headscratcher

There were enough twists and turns and surprises to keep it interesting and it was never boring or predictable, so I guess I just wanted more on the motive(s) and how/why this person became privy to the information that started the whole thing. What can I say? I'm a Criminal Minds fangirl nutball. I want to know why the crazies do what they do.

I think I'm disappointed that we didn't get a little more relationship progression. I feel like the plot took too much of a front seat here and the relationship part was like white noise in the background. Don't get me wrong! There was some further relationship development, but it seemed static, like it was more of an acknowledgment of what readers already knew after book one and not something that actually moved things between Cam and Hunter forward.

static

I'm also not real enamored of their current sexual dynamic or the fact that we didn't get to see much of it this time. I have a hard time believing that there aren't exclusively committed D/s and/or BDSM relationships between two and/or more people. Maybe wanting to see that with Hunt and Cam makes me old and boring, I don't know, but my heart is telling me these guys deserve to experience that, both individually and together. In short, I'm not sure where the author is headed with these guys and I'm a little disillusioned about how things stand now. Just a teensy bit, because I'm still in luuuurve with this couple and this series.

P.S. I'm no expert on D/s and/or BDSM so please take my words with a grain of salt. If I'm wrong or misinformed in my understanding of the commitment aspects of the aforementioned 'lifestyles', please message me. I like to learn knew things as opposed to spewing personal opinions with no basis in fact or practice. I don't take constructive criticism personally and prefer knowing over any sting I (won't) feel over being wrong about something!

That said, would any of that keep me from reading this book in the first place if I could wind the clock back? No. Would it keep me from reading it again in anticipation of the next book? No. I am still fascinated by how Hunter's mind works and by Cam's intuitive responses to what Hunter needs as well as his own self-awareness. Objectively speaking, I didn't expect any insta-fixes for these guys, so in that respect I'm satisfied. I just hope there's some tangible progress in their relationship going forward even if it doesn't look conform to my personal expectations.

premeditated resentments valid jpg

This is not a romance, but it is a love story. However, even given that little bit of perspective, I'm still just not sure that what is occurring between Hunter and (especially) Cam meshes with my perception of the characters as they've been written so far. I'm feeling a disconnect there that, arguably, may not exist anywhere but in my head. That's why, this time, I couldn't give the latest installment of the Hunter Dane Investigation series 5 stars. It did earn a solid 4+ but I was hoping for more.

Put your dancing shoes on people and get to steppin' with Adira August's Dancing Men. Despite my grumbling, I am still enamored of Hunt and Cam, still in love with the series, and I absolutely adore the writing style, the dialogues, the plots, the ideas and the overall story arc. I'm a firm believer that you can't win them all, so while this book ended up being first runner-up to the last, I will, without a single shred of doubt, be tap-tap-tapping my toes while waiting for the next book to come out. I maintain a compulsive need to see what happens with this couple. That won't change.

Hunter decided heaven was being eternally in the moment of waking naturally next to someone you wanted to see when you opened your eyes.

Phew.

Love it when the relationship and the mystery are done in a way they work together. Nothing drives me more crazy than a mystery that almost acts as a page filler. I find myself either bored with the mystery or bored with the couple. Here they worked unbelievably well as a cohesive story. Absolutely loving the development of these characters and how different they are from every other couple I have ever read about.

I love Hunt and Cam, that was breathtaking. Hunt is finally able to commit to Cam and he finds out some big secrets: .

I got a bit lost with the mystery part though. Too many people involved and a very convoluted intrigue. At first, I didn't really get the meaning of the title "Dancing Men". Now, I think it might have to do with .

Book one in the series MATCHSTICK MEN: a Hunter Dane Investigation was smoking hot with a decent murder mystery. Book two is as hot, and I Love Hunter and Cam forever. But the mystery part was not so good. I did not care about the urns or the dead people or the investigation, and wished the author spend less time with the dreary, boring police work, and more time with Hunter and Cam. But I still liked the book a lot, and would continue with the series

I didn’t like Dancing Men as much as I enjoyed Matchstick Men. The crime/case in this book was very boring. Hunt and Cam’s side story of their ever evolving relationship was good, but there wasn’t much of it. I definitely wasn’t keen on Hunter’s scene at the club with K-girl (or whatever her name was) and his weird fantasies about Twee. Hunt needs to stick with Cam and vice-versa. It felt like they were cheating on each other.

I’m hoping the next books are better than this one.

This series is so good. I'm late to the party so nothing I say will be fresh. Read all the reviews posted by others. They don't lie. Such a great dynamic between two strong-willed, multilayered alphas. The police procedural and mystery is the cherry on the sundae. Highly recommended.

Dark, gritty, intense. A hard boiled procedural mystery of murder. A bit gory with a decaying body found. This story is also hard core bdsm between Hunter and Cam. Not light reading, but excellent twists, turns and never saw it coming mystery!

The second book in the series was also great, especially because the case did not interfere with the personal lives of the main characters as in the first book. There were many names and many historical points and a super plot in this book. I found that the balance between what you find out and what is not explained in detail was pretty good, even if my brain switched off too often because I lost the connections, which I don't think was due to the book but to me, but I still really enjoyed it and I'm assuming that everything makes a lot of sense. I also really like the main characters and the way the case and their personal lives have reflected on each other and moved them forward. I also learnt a lot of new things and read articles about kinks that I didn't know about. And I laughed out loud in many parts of the book

Dancing Men is technically the third book in the series, even though it is just the second ‘Investigation’ book. This book takes a little turn to the left with the flow of the series and focuses more on the mystery than the intense relationship between our two MCs. Don’t get me wrong, Hunter and Cam are still revolving around each other with the push and pull reminiscent of two planets. The chemistry and the magnetic pull are still there; they are just feeling themselves out more and discovering who they are together, and making small in-roads into where they want to be and what the future holds. Even though this book is marked as a standalone, it’s not. Nothing about these books is standalone; start with the first one and go from there. While the murder mystery may be new, the relationship between our MCs certainly isn’t, and the supporting cast has been established in earlier books.

Pay attention. That’s the best advice I can give you. This mystery is a complicated one, and the amount of research the author probably had to do to make this plausible is staggering. There are layers on layers here. For me, it was great because I love books like that. Books that have several threads woven into their framework, and you cannot see the whole tapestry of the story until you are done with it.

Hunter has two puzzles to unravel in this mystery. One: who killed the poor person in the bottom of the thousand-year-old urn, and two: just who is Camden Snow? Cam has had enough of Hunter running away, and knows that the only way to get Hunter to admit his true feelings is to make him stop and see him. See all of him, not just the Dom Hunter needs for stress relief. At the end of book two, Hunter runs away, and Cam won’t accept that behavior from him again. They have to learn to work together in this book, to be a team—both in bed and out of it. As much as these two men trust each other within the paradigm of a D/s relationship, they are precious shy of trust outside of it. As for the police investigation, the clues start to add up, and a generations-old love story is revealed, which was both scandalous and passionate. You will not figure this one out ahead of time, people. I didn’t, not really, and that’s so very unusual for me. I’m not going to mention much about the mystery because to do so would give the story away, and I won’t do that.

Hunter and Cam still have that incredible, delicious tension, now stretched across three books, and that’s all down to the great writing style of Adira August. These are such well written books, and they have such a depth to them that Hunter and Cam have made my list of all-time favorite Dom/sub pairings. Geez, these guys give everything to each other. This book ends with Hunter and Cam in a relatively good place, but there are hints their newfound peace will be shattered in book four. I cannot wait to see how August wraps up the epic love story contained in this four book series, and I just know that on the off chance she wanted to make it five, I would support that endeavor wholeheartedly. Highly recommend!

Phenomenal followup to book 1

This review and much more can be found at Love Bytes Reviews

Hunter is having a really difficult time after the last case. He’s guilty over the way it ended – not only for the murderer but for Cam. For numerous reasons, Hunter thinks he is no good for Cam. Cam is angry and he’s not quiet about it. Hunt continues to punish himself, but when things with Cam seem to be going too far, mutual friends intercede and get Hunt back in the game. While Cam’s healing, Hunt has the brilliant idea to hire Cam to assist with his new unit.

In this new case, there are a lot of possible suspects and a lot of potential motives. There is even a possibility that someone who is close to Hunter is involved. The research is right up Cam’s alley and he’s happy to be assisting. The full team is back and they are in it up to their ears! There are lots of surprises and new information about both Hunter and Cam in this one that provide new insight into their pasts and their futures. The mystery is twisty and turny – just how they should be! I’ll not say more because I think the story is best read without a lot of preconceived notions. Never assume!!

This is a surprisingly emotionally satisfying follow up to Book 1. Cam and Hunter are dealing with the aftermath of the last case in this book, and I’d recommend reading the first in the series before this as it really does provide a lot of insight into both men and how they ever came to be together and how they affect each other. They are definitely working on figuring out their path forward in work and play and what kind of a relationship they can really have. Bombs are dropped in this one that shake both men. The new case that pulls them both in challenges them both personally and professionally. Once again, the heat between these two is off the charts. Although the BDSM club, Scene and Not Heard, plays slightly less of a role in this book, the members and the relationships they share are pivotal in their lives. I can’t wait to read the next book. Highly recommended if you like a good mystery and some very intense men. 😉

3.5 Stars.

This is the third book in the Hunter Dane Investigations, at the beginning of this book the author does state that this book can be read as a standalone. I would highly recommend reading this series as a whole as there is far too much in the novella and the previous book to miss out on.

Coming straight off of reading "Matchstick Men" which I rated 5 stars, I had such high hopes for this installment and I was left feeling slightly disappointed. The one thing that I absolutely loved about the previous book was the murder-mystery element to it. I found that in that book it was the perfect balance of complex plot and romance/BDSM. This book however, was focused so much on an extremely complicated murder/mystery that it completely took away from the characters. I felt like the plot was so complex that it felt the author was flinging information at me that I had absolutely no clue what was going on most of the time and had to constantly re-read pages to work it out.

I also felt like the characters and their relationship really suffered in this book, like it wasn't really a focus at all. You had Hunter desiring someone else and also doing a scene with someone else, and this seemed like it was pointless to the plot, there was no real reason for it to be in there. The characters only had 1 or 2 intimate scenes in this book, which I do admit were amazing, but it wasn't enough. I didn't feel much connection between them in this book and that felt like a major set back to this book.

Overall, a bit disappointing but was well written, and did have good ideas to it. Just a bit confusing for me.

Hunter and Cam are back in this great mystery story. It is an intriguing, spell-binding novel. I was hooked right from the start and read this book in one go. It is captivating and entertaining.
It is a mystery novel pur sang with lots of surprising twists and turns. Not everything is what it seems; not everyone is to be trusted. Don’t assume anything. There are a lot of names, so at times I had to backtrack to reread who is who, but it is all tied together in a very satisfying end.
Masterfully woven into the story is the growing relationship between Cam and Hunter. And it makes for some interesting dynamics. At work, Hunter is at the helm, telling Cam what to do. At home, however, Cam is the man who holds the reins, and Hunter lets him, willingly. The BDSM elements are not for the fainthearted, but they are so hot. Not even the fact that Cam is in a wheelchair due to a skiing accident, deters him from taking the Dom role.
This book can be read as a stand-alone, but as there are recurring characters it is recommended to read the first book as well.
I am eagerly looking forward to the next book in this series.

2.5/5

I like the first book, and I like the couple, but I just couldn't get into this book. The case started too late in the book, and it failed to grasp me. The strange writing style didn't help either.

The romance was shaky and felt force. (But maybe this is due to my detatchment with the book as I lost interest.) However I was unconvinced about Hunter.

On the side note, the sounding scene was hot tho.

i was hesitant to read this one at first because of some reviews, but after finishing, it wasn't even those things that bothered me, but the mystery itself. it was confusing as hell! i felt like i lost and grew brain cells over the course of the book. yes, it was interesting and thoroughly researched, but it was just hard to follow. i'm more of a "straight to the point" kind of person; i like my mysteries well-structured and cleanly resolved. there were too many people, moving pieces, and timelines, which made me feel lost for the majority of the book. the only parts that were saving graces were hunt and cam's progressing "relationship" and the sounding scene. anyways, i'm surprisingly still interested to see where this series will go, especially with cam's revelation.

Riveting!

This was so good. I like the how the author walks us through the investigations and the clues without dragging it out. It's detailed while still being exciting. At the same time we learn more about Hunt and Cam and watch as they get closer emotionally. These books give you a case in each one and hold to the series overall story of they guy's love story as well. The perfect blend of hot sex, intrigue, and emotional drama. Plus, you can't wait to start the next one.

More Hunt and Cam goodness, wrapped inside an entertaining mystery.

Det. Hunter Dane is tasked with figuring out who are the recently deceased occupants of ancient burial jars, and why they were murdered. As Hunt and his team track down clues, his relationship with Cam deepens into more, and he learns the devastating truth about Cam’s secret.

Sometimes the clues to the mystery get a little wrapped around themselves, but it’s not a big deal...since I’m way more invested in Hunt and Cam.

My rating is based purely on story enjoyment. I love Cam and Hunter...so, so much...even while my heart is breaking for them. LOVE them and cannot wait to devour the entire series!!

Note: if you are someone bothered by editing issues, this is NOT the series for you.

3.5⭐️

I liked this book a lot better than the last. We got to see both MC's in their personal time and also how they worked together working a case. I finally saw Hunter being the genius at puzzle solving that he is. It didn't come off that way in Matchstick Men as well. I also appreciated that we got to see more of Camden and got an insight into his mind and his thoughts on his relationship with Hunter. It isn't all sunshine and roses for them yet on that front but has the potential to be.

I was not a fan of the scenes at the club. I do not see why they have to do scenes with people that are not the other. Or at least where they are both in one together. Maybe that will be addressed later.
