The Rise and Fall of Reginald Everheart

Rate this book
All’s fair in love and meddling amongst the members of New York Times bestselling author Victoria Alexander’s Lady Travelers Society!

Unmarried and dedicated to illustrating the Explorers Club’s artifacts, Dulcie Middleworth is running out of prospects. Spinsterhood’s a tragedy for the daughter of a viscount, but London’s most eligible maiden has a secret: she’s already in love. But to confess an attraction to charming explorer Michael Shepard? Not when the man has no wish to marry and his heart’s desire lies in adventure abroad.

Surely, such a predicament calls for a matchmaker of Poppy Fitzhew-Wellmore’s caliber! And calls as well for a romantic rival — the legendary figment of Poppy’s imagination Reginald Everheart — to nudge Michael’s affections in Dulcie’s direction. But what to do when everyone demands to meet the famously infamous suitor who doesn’t really exist?

Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name. See this thread for more information.

New York Times bestselling author Victoria Alexander was an award winning television reporter until she discovered fiction was much more fun than real life. She turned to writing full time and is still shocked it worked out.

Since the publication of her first book in 1995, she has written thirty-one full length novels and six novellas. The Perfect Wife—originally published in 1996 and reissued in March 2008—hit #1 on the New York Times list. Sixteen of her books are bestsellers hitting the New York Times, USA Today and/or Publishers Weekly bestseller lists. With books translated into more than a dozen different languages she has readers around the world and has twice been nominated for Romance's Writers of America prestigious RITA award. In 2009 she was given a Career Achievement Award from RT Bookclub and was named Historical Storyteller of the year in 2003. In 2008 she was the keynote speaker for the Romance Writers of American annual conference in San Francisco. Victoria credits much of her writing success to her experiences as a reporter.
Her years as a broadcast journalist were spent in two radically different areas of the country: Nebraska and West Virginia. In West Virginia, she covered both natural and manmade disasters. She was on the scene when a power plant construction accident in a small town left 52 men dead. She once spent the night on a mountain waiting to learn of the fate of coal miners trapped in a mine collapse. Victoria was producing a newscast when her husband (who worked at the same television station) and several other journalists were held hostage by a disturbed Vietnam veteran. In Nebraska, she reported on the farm crisis and watched people lose land that had been in their families for generations. She covered the story that was the basis of the movie BOYS DON’T CRY and once acted as the link between police and a gunman who had barricaded himself in his home. Her investigative work exposed the trucking of New York City garbage to a small town dump in rural Nebraska.

During her journalism career, Victoria covered every president from Ford to Clinton. She knows firsthand what it feels like to be surrounded by rising floodwaters and inside a burning building. She’s interviewed movie stars including Kevin Costner, ridden an elephant and flown in a governor’s helicopter. She’s covered a national political convention and Pope John Paul II’s historic visit to Denver as well as small town festivals celebrating everything from walnuts to Glen Miller. Her work was honored by numerous organizations including the Associated Press who called a feature about a firefighter’s school "story telling genius". It was the encouragement she needed to turn from news to fiction. She’s never looked back.

Victoria claims her love of romance and journalism is to due to the influence of her favorite comic book character: Lois Lane, a terrific reporter and a great heroine who pursued Superman with an unwavering determination. And why not? He was extremely well drawn.

Victoria grew up traveling the world as an Air Force brat. Today, she lives in Omaha, Nebraska with her husband and her dogs. Victoria had two bearded collies, Sam and Louie (named from characters in one of her books). Sam (on the left), the best dog in the world for 13 ½ years, passed away in September 2010. Louie took on the position of loyal companion and did a fine job even though he doesn't understand that kitchen counter surfing is not allowed!

Now he's been joined by Reggie, also a faithful companion.

They all live happily ever after in a house under constant renovation and the accompanying parade of men in tool belts. And never ending chaos. Victoria laughs a great deal—she has to.

Well this was adorable.

This novella was exactly as novella's should be. Short, sweet and so full of fluff it makes your gums bleed. Michael and Dulcie were adorable. Just so cute in all the right ways. I loved that they each And when they finally did start interacting, all their encounters and conversations just made me smile.

Poppy, Gwen and Effie were wonderful, annoying matchmakers again in here. I closed this little book happy. It won't win any awards but it was a pleasant, unexpected distraction in what has been a crazy week so I rounded it up to 4 stars. Now onto book #2!

I decided to give Victoria Alexander another try and I wasn't disappointed this time! Maybe I should stick to short stories with this author ;)

I really enjoyed Dulcie and Michael but like with the first short story, the best part was the meddling done by our favorite ladies! Once they see how otp are into each other but don't know how to say it, they decide to "help" them. That's when Reginald Everheart comes in and turns this story funny as hell. That's why I missed that ladies in the first book so much! If the second book features them, then I'll definitely give it a try. They never fail to make laugh with their antics and in this case the otp didn't even know about it!

Cute and enjoyable novella! This was my very first text by Victoria Alexander and I have to say, I really liked her style. She was funny and the text was cleverly written. However, the story was a bit silly. I enjoyed it, but not too much. Anyhoo, I'm happy to have read it, it put me in a good mood, and, after all, that's what counts the most! :D

Those three ladies, founders of the Lady Travelers Society, are at it again in this novella--plotting to help smooth true love's course for a charming young couple who seem to need a nudge (shove?) to acknowledge their true feeling for each other. There's a deadline too, and to make it all work the ladies will have to call on the intrepid, the fearless, the renowned--and entirely fake--Reginald Everheart.

Cute listen tacked on unexpectedly to book 2 of the series. I appreciated that there were no love scenes forced into this novella. Nothing wow worthy, but a decent story.

Short, sweet story of love in the library. Dulcie is on the shelf according to society's leaders. Instead of hunting for a husband, she spends her time in the library at the Explorers Club illustrating their artifacts. What they don't know is that she is already in love with the man who sits on the other side of the library, wannabe explorer Michael Shepard. It's a hopeless love as he has made it clear that he does not intend to marry.

I enjoyed the progress of the relationship between Dulcie and Michael. They spent months in the same space, intrigued by each other but never exchanging more than polite pleasantries. That doesn't stop them from watching each other, noting the little things that tug on their hearts. Dulcie's mother is determined to marry her off and constantly pushes one particular suitor forward. But Dulcie wants to marry for love, and Preston Drummond doesn't appeal in the slightest. Michael is intrigued and attracted to Dulcie, but long ago decided that a man who disappears for months or years at a time has no business subjecting a wife to that lifestyle. When Preston's attentions become more pointed, Michael can't let Dulcie be fooled into accepting the man. However, his attempt to help is not well received, and the resulting scene causes sparks to fly.

Poppy and her friends believe it is evident that Dulcie and Michael belong together and that they just need a little help to see it. Poppy resurrects an intrepid explorer from her past, one Reginald Everheart. He is very nearly perfect - and wholly a product of her imagination. With the help of Gwen and Effie, Poppy uses Reginald's "attentions" to Dulcie to provoke Michael's jealousy and motivate him toward accepting his feelings. The sparks continue to fly as Michael keeps saying things that rile Dulcie's independent nature. It takes advice from the experienced older ladies to get both Dulcie and Michael to realize that with love, anything is possible.

There were quite a few scenes that had me laughing out loud. Dulcie's rejections of Preston's proposals were great, as he had so much trouble believing anyone would turn him down. The scene with the arrival of the artifact from Reginald that Dulcie was to draw was hysterical, thanks to Michael's reaction to the baboon's "attributes." It was also fun to see Poppy and friends stumble over their invention in a case of "too many cooks."

Dulcie is the daughter of a viscount. But, now it is her third season with no betrothal in sight. Dulcie has a mind of her own and that means even the man her Mother prefers will not get an acceptance. She is an illustrator for the Explorers Club. She does a wonderful job.

While she is in the library of the Explorers Club doing her illustrating, she is staring at Michael.

Michael is studying because he has planned his life and it includes him traveling to the Amazon. Michael has wanted to be an explorer since he was a boy. And because of what his life will be, he has determined that he will never marry. Leaving a wife alone while he goes off on an adventure would not be fair to a wife.

But, while he is in the library he is staring at Dulcie.

Poppy, Gwen and Effie are three older ladies whose husbands are gone for long periods of time. They are best friends and when they look at Dulcie and Michael, they realize they must help move things forward. The forward movement should start with actual conversations between Dulcie and Michael.

The plan includes Reginald Everheart a well known American explorer. He will appear to court Dulcie and that will cause Michael to express his true feelings. The fact that Reginald does not exist will not be a problem.

Ms Alexander writes witty and amusing and lovely stories. This novella is no exception.

Dulcie and Michael are entertaining young people. They are bright and capable and believe that the future is within their grasp. Poppi, Gwen and Effie are wonderful characters. They have no qualms about doing whatever they see fit in order to move a love story forward.

If you are in the mood for a quick and fun read, this is a book you will enjoy.

I admit that I was perplexed at what purpose of this novella was going to be. The first novella fit so well with the first novel, that I was taken aback that this one did not also have to do with relations of the hero or heroine in the main novel. However, given that it appears Alexander is crafting stories where part of the plot revolves around the three matrons, Lady Blodgett, Mrs. Fitzhew-Wellmore, and Mrs. Higginhbotham, each having a major role as connections to the main couple in each installment, the author’s intent started to fall into place.

But ultimately, I felt that this either should have been a much longer book, or maybe a much shorter one. I’m not sure which, because there are things I liked, and I can’t be certain whether the things I disliked would be best served by being removed, or by being expanded on in greater detail.

To start with the good points: the three matrons are absolutely delightful. It is so much fun to watch them play their roles in bringing couples together, and their scheme is especially silly here, but in all the right ways. And some of the other supporting characters are fun, especially Preston Drummond, whose reminded me of Mr. Collins from Pride and Prejudice. And on the surface, both Michael and Dulcie seem like interesting characters, who I felt could have been explored more.

But I just did not find the romance that interesting. I didn’t feel like the chemistry was all that well-developed, and it just feels lacking in any depth that gets me attached to the characters, in the way the characters in the novels and the previous novella did. However, it is relatively enjoyable, as far as novellas go, and it establishes the connection to the rest of the Lady Travelers world, making it an okay addition to the series.

Another delightful story that includes the further good intentioned meddling of the "Lady Travelers Three" as I call them. I swear they steal every one of these stories.

Dulcie Middleworth has been declared a social failure being unmarried starting her 5th year after her debut. She is the son her father never had and now find herself drawing illustrations for the Explorers Club her dad has been a member of forever. Michael Shepard is untitled but has a significant fortune as an heir of Shepards Department store, competitor to Harrods. He's studying up about the Amazon as he expects to be a member to the group departing in a month. His beloved uncle was lost in the Amazon and Michael is hoping to find information about him while being an intrepid explorer too. Dulcie has found herself falling for Michael as they spend hours in the Explorers club's library together, albit on opposite sides of the room. The Lady Travelers Three have observed the love developing and decide to help things along before Michael leaves. Poppy advises her that "Courage isn't something most people are born with. It comes from determination and resolve and faith." That life is too short to waste and "Love is always worth the effort." Michael discovers trading dreams is worth love.

This novella was included in the NetGalley ARC given to me from Victoria Alexander and Harlequin for an honest review. Thank you for the delightful story.

The Rise and Fall of Reginald Everheart, by Victoria Alexander, was first published in November of 2017. Rise is a novella, #1.5, in Ms Alexanders Lady Travelers Society series. I've messed up and read some books in the series out of sequence. I may have to catch up but so far each story has been a very good stand-alone. There are connection characters and places but the main couples have been new and different.

The best recurring characters are three ladies who love to matchmake, interfere, eavesdrop, and wreak havoc with peoples lives. In other words, they are fabulous. I'm crazy about them and wish they were real. They decide that our couple need to be prodded along the path to happiness, they're not getting anywhere by themselves.

Michael Shepard and Dulcie Middleworth are both strong independent people who just happen to have fallen in love at first sight. Both are convinced that a relationship is pointless, Michael is leaving in a couple of months. I like that they try and stick to their guns but love always wins. Plans change and they come around. I didn't think either character became intense or too compelling, but it is after all a novella. Shallow or not, they were a cute couple, this was a quick read, and I enjoyed the journey.

If you're looking for a laugh, this novella might work. Dulcie Middleworth is past the appropriate age for marriage, though she thinks she might have found the right man for her. Too bad she says nothing more to him than comments about the weather. That right man, one Michael Shepard, is taken with the comely woman who spends so much of her time in the same room as he in the library. He, because he's preparing to become an adventurer in the Amazon wilds, and she because she is paid to pen images of some of the antiquities and other findings brought back from other adventures by explorers. Dulcie's three married sisters agree with her that the man her mother thinks would be perfect for her really isn't, but they know nothing of Michael until a trio of older women who are convinced that with their help, Dulcie and Michael will discover each other, fall into each other's arms and live happily ever after. To accomplish that, they enlist the help of one Reginald Everheart. Who he is and how he comes to be is something you'll have to discover for yourself.

I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, and at times do both, as Dulcie and Michael stumble through every miscommunication at every turn. Ms. Alexander brings the three founders of the Traveler's society in to save the day, although that also is just as funny as the three older women provide sage advice and yet add to the miscommunication. Without the older ladies, while the miscommunication would have been funny, it would not have had the added bumbling misadventure portions that I enjoy watching the same type in Laverne and Shirley and I Love Lucy TV shows. I really loved this, and by the second page was already wishing this was longer.

A delightful romance novella with a fun plot, even if the main characters are a little obtuse bordering on childish with their initial behavior and then inability to speak with one another.... it's set before the Lady Traveler's main series, but is listed as 1.5, and also came on the audiobook after book 2, so take all order with a grain of salt. The ladies who run the society are all a bit younger and haven't formed their group yet, but they are involved in their husbands' Explorer's club, and when they spy the perfect match between Dulcie and Michael, they invent the dashing explorer Reginald Everheart to make Michael jealous.

3 stars.

Note: I listened to the audio version of this book, which was included as a bonus feature of Book #2.

This actually took place before Book #1, before the three ladies became widowed and opened the Lady Travelers Society.

In this short story, the H/h have been using the Explorers Club Library, he is researching for his upcoming trip to the Amazon whilst she is employed as an illustrator of artifacts. The ladies have noticed them eyeing each other and decided to push things along. How they use Reginald Everheart is just so funny...

What an amusing tale! Dulcie's mother fears that her daughter's marriage prospects have greatly dwindled and spends much energy putting the wrong young man before Dulcie. So, when a good friend offers a matchmaking prospect in the dashing adventurer Reginald Everheart, everyone wants to meet him. This is where the comedy begins...he does not really exist!

This was a quick, fun Victorian featuring a heroine who is an illustrator attracted to a would-be world explorer as they perform their daily work at the Explorer's Club. We get both their perspectives about each as several older ladies from the Lady Traveller's Society decide these two need to be together and invent the man who will drive them to be together. Poor Reginald!

A short story that I found a bit dry, although there were a couple of things that made me laugh out loud. For instance, I found Dulcie's reply to Preston's marriage proposal humorous - and then, of course, I think my favourite scene was the statue of a baboon with an erect penis, which Dulcie had to sketch. Anyway, a HEA! 3☆

Quite amusing. I want to tell someone what cause me to laugh out loud with appreciation for the absurd but it would require too much set up. It’s a novella so of course the story arc is a bit abrupt. Fun to read about the lady’s when they were younger, only in their middle years. I wonder if the women they set up are referenced in the earlier books with later settings.

I loved this one! It was such fun to watch Dulcie and Michael and their awkwardness together. Poppy, Effie, and Gwen added to the humor with their matchmaking ideas. This novella was included with Lady Traveler's Guide to Larceny With A Dashing Stranger.

This frothy novella was a quick read. I ended up thoroughly enjoying it, even though I read it out of sequence in the series. It has much to say about living one's life, even though there are risks.

If you enjoy Victorian romances, you should really give this series a whirl.

You can find the audio of this novella, "The Rise and Fall of Reginald Everheart," as a bonus on the audiobook "The Lady Travelers Guide to Larceny with a Dashing Stranger." But according to Goodreads, the novella comes before the main book. The audiobook is available on HoopLa via some public libraries.
