Chihiro's creativity with spinning classic magical creatures and items is a huge inspiration for my own writing, like the little mandrake babies! They were the cutest things, I'll tell ya.
This volume sees some interesting continuations from earlier stories: Akane's ongoing efforts to lift the enchantment on Inukai, return of the Harbinger of Summer, and the return of the mandrake. Also, the final chapter where the author is sort of like, "oh, right, I set it up that witches are supposed to be secret, but Makoto hasn't been very discreet about it at all; I should probably address that."
It remains fun, but it just didn't click with me really. I think it is more me than the book, but so it goes.
Is it ironic that on the heels of a YALSA award (announced at the end of this volume) we get an ecchi-light hot spring story? This was a fun, and needed reread, as I’m reading a really heavy book and needed to find a soothing interruption. The ”evolved” mandrakes are too adorable! I need a plushy! And Inukai’s crisis with her transformation curse cure was the best! So sweet! Beautifully simple line work from Ishizuka sensei keeps this series always charming.
Makoto Kowata is a witch. Or rather, she's a witch in training. As such, she has packed up all her belongings (and cat) to live with distant relatives. It's a bit of a family tradition – a way of sending young witches out into the world - but in a gentler way.
It's time to head out to the yomiya – a night festival. Of course, given this crew, it's only natural for them to come across the Harbinger of Summer (who tends to oversleep). Meanwhile, gardening mayhem brings a new witchy perspective to the farm.
Review:
Seven volumes in, and I still can't get over how fun and endearing this series is. Flying Witch Vol. 7 is everything I had hoped and expected – a casual romp through the countryside with witches, creatures, and more.
I enjoyed the take on the Harbinger of Summer. It was a quirky detail that fit in so perfectly with the whole series. Likewise, the (mis)adventure with the mandrakes was just as funny, though I'm not going to talk about them too much (to avoid spoilers).
Honestly, I'm still trying to figure out what else I can say that has yet to be covered in previous volume reviews. The series is a steady constant of slice-of-life storytelling in such a calming way. It's the perfect series to chill and read.

I don’t really have anything bad to say about this volume story wise - really enjoyed the story about Mako & Aunt Nana going to the market and happening about Akane randomly joining a float making team (and getting drunk) 😂.
The one with the sentient cute mandrakes was another favourite!
Could’ve done without the nudity especially considering Mako is meant to be a teenager - not a fan of that and don’t think it was necessary even if it was depicting a bath house at a hot spring. The actual story of the reporter meeting them at the hot spring being thwarted by the “Rabbit Rule” was quite funny though.
Another fun read. Entertaining from beginning till the end. The witch stuff is getting more and more exciting and interesting. Akane's journey to China to find potion to fix Inukai. Harbinger of summer with his delicious gems. Cute little mandrakes creatures. Journalist who's investigating weird phenomenon. Yups lots of fun thing full of magic happening in this book and love seeing Makoto's power grow each day. My fav still Chinatsu's excitement and curiosity though, always put a big smile on my face.
Another volume of flying witch, another volume I thoroughly enjoyed! Any time we see Miss Inukai is a pleasure, as is any further information we get about how magic works in this world! There is a panel where Makoto says “I feel like I’m learning new things every day, and I’m always having fun.” and that sums up my experience reading the series this far! Makoto’s enthusiasm is infectious, and she is always just finds amazement in what others may see as mundane. I can wait to start the next volume!
Fun and wholesome like all the other volumes. Loved the mandrakes in this one; they put such a smile on my face. I really like that throughout this series you learn about the world of witches and magic and the rules and spells that go along with it but at the same tj was see that witches have the freedom to tweak magic and create new spells when they want. Lots of fun and hate that I have to wait so long for the next volume to come out!
I enjoyed getting to catch up with the cast of Flying Witch. This series is easy to read, with very little drama or negativity in them which is appreciated at times. I do miss the earlier volumes which was very centered on the family, but I do like seeing familiar characters as they grow. If you’re new to the series, I wouldn’t recommend starting with this volume since there are quite a few faces that won’t make sense unless you’ve followed the series.
Another cute volume! This one has Akane off to China to meet with a witch to try and get a potion that is difficult to make and expensive but after some entertaining shenanigans she succeeds. The reason for this potion, well read the book and find out! Beyond that story line we have adorable mandrake babies! Who knew that could be a thing. Also we get to see the "rabbit rule" in full effect which stops people from being able to find out or record magic happenings.
Makoto has to deal with some possibly sentient baby mandrakes and a reporter snoops around.
Adorable as usual, but this was my least favorite in the series so far. This is probably because Makoto wasn't the central figure of several of the stories. Her sister is ok, but I want more Makoto! I'll still be reading the next in the series.
🥺I did’t want it to end this was so cool and fun and the Magic world is so much more open and side characters are more flushed out. I had so much fun I really don’t want to series to end. I know there are more but this was my last volume for now lol.
The cousins discover new ways of growing magical plants, a cure for curses, and how reporters don't break the news about magic. The characters are showing more depth and inner thoughts. The series has the perfect amount of serious, humor, and fantasy to keep me invested.
