After a grave injury Hunter is in a bad state. He can’t see the light anymore. Mackenzie can’t accept this and sends him a reason to live. With love and determination Hunter approves, but will life ever be the same again? *** This is the last part of the series, ca. 50,000 words.
I'm a contemporary romance writer, who likes her men tattooed, her women independent and her coffee strong.
My stories are all about love, but some are of the romantic kind, some of the sad kind and others of the very steamy kind. So if you can stand drama, foul language and some sex, you came to the right place.
I've followed the series and enjoyed the journey. However, I'd like to start by saying that it didn't end with as much character development as I'd expected. Hunter, specifically, had a lot of room for growth. I understand that he was injured and lashing out but he doesn't ever really recover in any truly impactful way. His maturity level was that of a teenager. This was most evident during scenes where there was intimacy. Mac won my heart. She was selfless, patient, loving, guileless, and genuine. She made some big mistakes earlier in the series but she redeemed herself many times over.
The plot had potential that was somewhat stunted by the lack of fulfilling characterization. The pacing was good. The writing was generally strong with some opportunities for improvement.
This book should not be read as a standalone because the context is critical for understanding.

Der dritte Teil von "Free at Last: vereint" kommt wieder an Teil 1 heran.
A perfect ending to a series that I fell in love with. When an arc of this book landed on my kindle, I was excited to dive in. From the moment I started this book, I didn’t put it down once. I truly love Mac. Throughout this series I have been eager for her to get her happily ever after. One of the things I loved about this book is that there wasn’t any/much angst. Unlike the previous books, this book barely had any drama. The conclusion to Mac and Hunters story ran smoothly. I like Hunter but I will always like Mac more. I liked that Mac documented everything for Hunter. There wasn’t one time that she didn’t put Hunter first. She wasn’t selfish and her love for Hunter was clear to see. I liked that Hunter didn’t get mad when he learnt Hazel was his daughter. I liked that his love for his daughter gave him the will and the fight to carry on. Overall, I loved the ending to this series. I liked the storyline and the characters more and more each book. I loved Case’s friendship with Mac and the bond he had with his niece. I would recommend reading this book as part of a series. The storyline for this book is easy to follow and the series is enjoyable. I seriously hope Case gets his story told because I want more of him!
I could not put this book down. Hunter and Mac's story finishes perfectly. I loved reading about Hunter's reaction to Mac's child. This series has been beautifully written and translated. I really hope there is a continuation for Carey's happy ending.
Note, I did receive an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I am really torn on this book. On one hand I am so glad I got through the trilogy, and that Hunter and Mac end up together. We all know that this is what the three book buildup was for. On the other hand, they have a LOT of issues that don't get addressed in this book and honestly, I was kind of wondering if this relationship should even happen. If you are an abuse counselor or therapist you will have all kinds of alarm bells ringing with this trilogy.
Alright, this book finds us with Mac, parenting little Hazel who is now around three years old, and Hunter, off doing the war hero thing. (Oh! Let me just throw in here a little note about the time line in this book- it is bizarre. You feel like you're reading about events fairly close in time but no, it's like three years. Never mind that makes this entire weird relationship between five and seven years and you're like, get off the pot, yall.) Anyways. On his way back to America, the convoy he's in is attacked in a surprise ambush and Hunter is seriously injured. Unable to get to America in that condition, he's sent to Germany to have his multiple surgeries and recover. In Germany they notify his next of kin (his brother Casey), who has been living with Mac and Hazel all this time as friends, so he sends Mac to Germany, convinced it'll be this amazing love story ending.
Except it isn't. Hunter isn't at all the same person, war changes someone, and he's become angry and hard. Once he learns the extent of his injuries he's dangerously angry, depressed, and suicidal. Seeing Mac only amps all of those feelings and she decides she's going to win him over with a blow job! (I know, this is as ridiculous reading it as it is me talking about it.) Anyways, so that's bad so she goes back to San Diego, dejected, and still hasn't told Hunter about his damn daughter. Fast forward to him coming to Virginia for the rest of his recovery and rehab, so Casey and Mac decide to temporarily live in Virginia, determined to win him over. Hunter finds out about his daughter, has all of the feels for her, and Mac because he's angry at her but feels like a jerk for abandoning her when she clearly needed him. Reluctantly they go forward with a bizarre relationship.
I'm only giving this book 3/5 stars because while I'm glad we've got the whole happy ending thing, there are so many red flags in this book that I'm uncomfortable giving it a higher rating. So we have Mac, a childhood sexual abuse survivor, now in a highly dominant relationship with a man who readily says he's going to use her how he wants, when he wants, and an orgasm for her is a gift? Oh hell no, asshole. While giving him a blow job he pushes her head onto him to the point where she's struggling and at the end has tears in her eyes? NOPE. I think the draw for Mac to Hunter was that he was kind, and caring, a soft spot to land, but he's become harsh, unkind, domineering, and a "take it or leave it" kind of guy. I just don't see how this would work in real life.Oh well. Overall the series was a fast read and I would recommend it.
Well, we arrived at the end of the journey, the last book from the trilogy. This book starts exactly where the second one ended. Hunter is injured in the war and loses hope. Alone and with his chance to go back to the Marines is nonexistent, he sinks into a dark place. He grew so much from the first book, from that 17-year-old teenager, who thought that owns the world, became a broken man haunted by the horrors from the war. So much time has been passed since he and Mac met, 7 years, exactly. And even after 7 years, he still couldn't let her go. Once that she is back in his life, she gives him a reason to live, a reason that he wouldn't ever dream of. Since this is the last book, I expected so much from it. I was again on the edge and I wanted them together. Hunter was so stubborn in the second book but in this one, he managed to change. It was so nice to see how much the characters changed over the years and I was so happy that all that angst and drama is finally over and our heroes can find their HEA. Mac deserved to be happy after everything that she been thought and Hunter as well and the last chapters and the epilogue was just what I been waiting for since I started the first book This last book is about mending, mending the wounds, and finally, being free, and in the end, they manage to get there.
P.S. It might sound totally weird but now, I kind of want a book about Carey and Hazel. I know that is kind of impossible according to who they are to each other, but the way he loves her is just so cute and their story would be totally forbidden.
I read the first and second book in the series, with mixed feelings on both. The first seemed to be more of Hunter coming of age (and being a jerk in the process) and the second a mismash of miscommunication between him and Mac. Now, Hunter's gravely wounded in the military, and Mac runs to his side.
He's back to being a jerk in a number of ways, and she's a kind, loving, caring... doormat. I mean, it makes sense if you know her character's background, but I'm loathe to call it a happy ending when she's just doing anything he wants to keep him happy, even if she's not entirely sold on it. (Yes, he has PTSD. Yes, some of his reactions are clearly because of that.)
I like Carey, but he's mainly in the background. There's a recurring joke that the only words the infant picks up are "Daddy" and swear words, which grows old quickly and will greatly stunt her social skills. It also makes me question the intelligence of the adults surrounding her to forget that she's there and keep swearing around her.
Despite all this, the characters were engaging and I wanted what was best for them - I'm just not so sure they got it.
The Number of Breaths erinnert. Klare Kaufempfehlung, 5+ Sterne.
I've been waiting for months for the conclusion of Mac and Hunter's story. I was not disappointed! They have been through so much and the last part of their journey was heart breaking because they had both missed so much! I will miss reading about them, but I'm satisfied with their HEA! Although, I'm sure readers would love a book about Carey and how the dynamic changes when he's not Mac's sole support anymore.
While I really enjoyed this book, I feel like it was too drawn out. I LOVED Mac & Hunter's story, but unfortunately feel like there was too many issues unaddressed... I expected more.
Loved this book from beginning to end. It was beautifully written from 2 different perspectives and interlocked without losing the over all flow of the story. Will definitely be looking for other books from this author.
Thank you so much for giving this story the ending it so deserved. And also making it known about what all most wounded soldiers go through mentally and physically. Hunter and Mac tore my heart out and then put it back together
This story had me hooked from the beginning to the end...between the storyline, the different points of view and the details...some mouthwatering details....absolutely loved it...awesomeness...even had a good soft closing...love books like these
This was an amazing ending to and amazing series.Annie Stone you knocked it out of the park.Thank you for taking me on journey that I will remember always.
This is the third book in the series and they need to be read in order.
Hunter Tilman has been flown to Germany after his armored vehicle was attacked while he was in Afghanistan and he was severely injured. Struggling with where his life is he makes a drastic choice that has large impications.
But Mackenzie Hall is not ready to give up on Hunter and wants to show him what he is giving up, even if it gets her in a large amount of trouble.
Can Hunter find the light through all the darkness and will Mackenzie and Carey finally be able to show Hunter the love that they have for him?
I have been waiting for this conclusion for a long time and I thought it was great.
I totally understood why Hunter was down but I hated that he pushed Mackenzie away in Germany when it was obvious that she had to care to fly that far to see him. Yet he had just gone through so much that it wasn't a surprise.
I absolutely loved Mackenzie and the strength that she had to know that she had to do whatever it took to make Hunter really understand everything that happened. I felt so bad for what happened to her at the hospital but what she sacrificed was truly for the best for Hunter.
Mackenzie and Hunter had a deep love for each other but Hunter had no clue about what really happened with Mackenzie and Carter. It broke my heart when Hunter began to read some of the emails that Mackenzie and Carey sent and I loved how Mackenzie documented everything for Hunter.
The ending was great and very well deserved!! I loved that Hunter finally understood everything that he missed and was ready to take life head on.
I would love to have a book for Carey now so we can see what happens when he gets to live his own life!!
a saving grace by Annie Stone is the third book in the Free At Last Series and the conclusion to Hunter and Mac´s story. a saving grace picks up where book two, a losing battle ends. Hunter is severely injured while on deployment in Afghanistan. Mac rushes to him, but he refuses to see her. But she doesn´t give up, not on him and not on her love for Hunter.
Let me tell you, this book gutted me. I could feel the characters emotions in the words. This story has it all—tension, angst, suspense and heartbreak. I've smiled, laughed, cried and was angry at some point. It is not often I feel so connected to the characters, but Annie Stone has accomplished just that. I love the story, the characters and the words. a saving grace is just like the other books in the series raw and gritty and it made my heart bleed for Hunter,Mac and Hazel. And Carey, I can´t stop swooning about Carey. He´s the unicorn best friend/brother everybody should have. a saving grace is a emotional read. This book deals with sensitive subjects like depression and attempted suicide.
a saving grace is not a standalone. You must read book one, a fighting chance and book two, a losing battle, first. I highly recommend the book and the series and wish I could give more than 5 stars. Thank you so much, Annie Stone.
I am sad to this series end, but with that being sad this book was a let down. It started out perfect with all the turmoil and heartbreaking beauty that gripped us all at the beginning of the series, but then feel completely short by the ending.
This installment focuses on Hunter after his injury and how Mackenzie must fight both of their demons to bring their family back together. She understands that the road will not be easy, but she is willing to fight for the man she loves. Better yet she wants to ensure that their daughter has the father that she deserves as well.
Stone picks up right where we left off with the last installment, but once Hunter and Mackenzie are reunited the story goes downhill from there. There is no more character development or any type of character reaction to anything that occurs. It becomes a book of all roses and sunshine and honestly leaves me unfulfilled by the ending. Although everything is resolved and we get the happily ever after we were all longing for, It is by no means up to par with the rest of the books in the series.
I would highly recommend this series, but I would caution anyone that is planning on reading the final book to go in with limited expectations.
*** I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review ***
I've been patiently waiting for this conclusion that I read it in one sitting. I've been rooting for Hunter and Mac since Book 1.
Mac flew out to be with Hunter as expected the minute she found out that he was hurt. Hunter of course reacted in so many different ways because of the injury he has just suffered. I literally wanted to strangle both of them because the love is so clear but damn they are stubborn.
Days turned into weeks and when she's finally had it and places adorable Hazel on his lap, the story starts taking a different turn. You start to see the beautiful love story developing that should've happened in my opinion since Book 2 but anyways.
The love between these two is so strong; add an amazing little girl and an awesome brother makes for an amazing story. Make sure you have tissues because once the reconciliation starts and they discuss the past, you'll get teary eyed. These brothers are protective, fierce and inseparable. Mac is amazing and Hazel is adorable.
I voluntarily accepted an advanced reader copy of this book.
4.5 fantastic stars. A saving grace has been a book I've eagerly awaited for a while now and I'm so happy with the result. I binge read this book this evening as I needed to know what happened to Hunter and Mackenzie. I've routed for these two from day one and prayed they'd get their HEA and this book definitely didn't disappoint me. I loved the fantastic storyline that flowed really well and hooks you in from the first chapter and doesn't let you go until you read the end. Even though I got everything I wanted from this book im sad to say bye to the Tilmans as they took me on a fantastic journey. I can't wait to see what other delights Annie Stone has for me in my future. I highly recommend you one click this book when you can. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
Touching and amazing ending to this series! I'm hoping to see a spin off for Carey. Mac has an amazing heart and constitution. Hunter is stubborn but ultimately he shows what a good man he is. Hazel is a doll! Loved!!
