I liked this historical approach for introduction of Islam. Religion is a historical process and has reached us in present form going through complex historical geographical and social conditions. it is these material conditions that has created differences in interpretation of Quran although text remain same for all.
These rifts appeared in early post-Prophet era over definitions of simple things like what is a sin? and whether one remains believer after committing a sin , where Kharijites took extreme stand and declared sinners outside the bond of Islam and can be killed . From here started the process of defining true Islam . What should be the sole authentic sources to consult any new problem? Rahman skillfully start, after initial introduction to Quran and life of Prophet, on development of tradition jurisprudence and school of thoughts and later legacy down to 20th century.
Although description is not detailed, information wise, but is loaded with reasonable analysis. My problem was with last chapters about reformation, I read it twice but was not convinced. later found a separate title on Revival and reform in Islam by the same other. maybe can better reframe my thoughts after reading that.
