This is much more what I am looking for, in general, with a "historical novel". As in a novel based on history, to the best extent possible. In this case it is "true crime".
Mr Krausnick went to the city archives and found the police documents and the church documents to a large investigation - the Hemsbach (Germany) robbery/murder of 1811 that ended in the eventual tracking down and capture of most of the members of a famous robber band of the time. The author also has studied the history, the literature, the culture and sociology of the period. And he puts together a non-anachronistic story of many voices around something that actually happened.
Of course actual reality still was different. But in reading the novel, you are confronted with what were the conditions of the time, and what were some possible likely actions and thoughts of people of the time in response. You see them and us in a new way, or more clearly.
