She will bring a storm like none they've ever seen ... and change the world forever.
It's been five years since Roderick Kael murdered King Vihaan Sundragon, claiming the throne of Sunkai and all of Nfaros for himself. Five years since the Princesses Adlae, Mirae, and Brae were forced to give up everything they've ever known. Five years since the Creator of All allowed winter's snow to fall. But now the wind stirs with a familiar chill. Winter is coming down from the Ice Mountains, brought by the only one who can wield the storm. The Winter Queen herself.
In a faraway wood, one who survived watches and waits for her chance to reclaim what is hers by blood and birthright. Within the walls of the city, another bears the burden of survival and the consequences that came with it. Across the sea, from the distant mountains, two strangers come in search of one who can save them from the ice of winter.
Within the palace of Sunkai, evil stirs. Loyalties are tried; love tested. And amidst these strange events, the Winter Queen prepares her storm ... and Nfaros is not ready for her rage.
From as far back as she can remember, Erica Marie Hogan loved to write. When she was a little girl, she adored make believe, but gradually her imagination became too big to restrict it to playtime and so, she wrote. She lives to plot new stories, enjoys a good tear-jerker, and chocolate is her cure for any ailment. Erica’s wish is to continue to write stories that not only drop her readers into the middle of historical time periods, but also to show the ability to rise up out of adversity and tragedy. When it comes to genre, she has no limits.

This book was just SO good!! Each of the Sundragon sisters had a distinct personality and a unique role to play in the quest to take the throne back from the usurper who killed their father, and I loved how their stories started to weave together towards the end. Hogan's intricate world-building added so much complexity and interest, and her beautiful writing style kept me engaged throughout. Despite the pervading darkness and impossible decisions faced by the characters, an underlying sense of strength and hope was always present. I can't wait to read more of this series!
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book*
I was sucked in from the first chapter. Sisters bound by magical forces. Brother pitted against brother. And a kingdom ruled by an evil king hangs in the balance. The story is brought to life with elegant descriptions and neverending twists and turns. You'll be sucked in too.
Erica Marie Hogan as once again written a novel that holds your interest from the beginning to end. It's a captivating & mysterious story about love & family loyalty. I'm looking forward to Book 2 of the series.
I wavered back and forth about how I felt about this book and how to best put into words what I thought.
This was a good prologue. Is how I felt in the end. It had a nice sound cast. It had an interesting story. But by the time I finished I was like okay now the story can begin. A lot of this is getting characters into place.
There's also way too many pov in my opinion. I think I counted 6-7 of them.
Light spoilers to follow
There's 3 sisters. One's arc is literally come into palace, wander around for a few days, then leave to try to get to a battle she totally misses.
Another doesn't have hardly any arc. It's I have to escape at some point with my daughter. Then at the very end we finally get to that attempt.
The third is trying to start a revolution. But that looks like a quick and hardly seen takeover of a small town, then retreat, then camping, then looking for someone who got lost, then traveling. Then finally battle at the end which again went by quick.
There's also a person looking for another person. Only they know where the person they're looking for is. They have like one conversation?
The main male villain is given a few scenes but other than yeah he's a jerk we don't see him much. The main female villain gets more time of being evil and seemed to have the most complete arc b/c she had something she wanted to do and accomplished it by the end.
Basically there's hardly any plot progression this whole novel. It's more like setting up characters for the actual story which I assume/hope is the next book.
I also wish we'd seen the motivation for the family of "really nice guys who were old family friends" to turn traitor on their king and revolt with this corrupt king. I think we may get that answer later but I felt like there was this disconnect with accepting that they were "good". Especially the one's Brae's husband. He's not very nice to his wife. Only nice when she does what he wants. Like if she does something he doesn't like then he gets nasty. If she doesn't agree with him or mentions her sisters he gets mad. Like I'm leaving the house angry and sleeping elsewhere angry.
Honestly the guy is a jerk. Brae was told this marriage or death so forced marriage and a husband who won't even let her mention her sisters. He has siblings and you'd think he'd understand. But no he wants her to forget hers.
But yeah, if I'm to ignore all that and believe he's "got a good heart" then I needed to see what he saw in this new king. Because everything we saw was the guy was a cold hearted killer, who forced brae into an arranged marriage, seeks to kill anyone who stands in his way, won't treat even Jandry right b/c he hates to see Brae have anything nice. What did Jandry see in this guy? What was so bad about the old king?
Anyway, I felt like this had a lot of potential as the start to a story. But I don't want to read a novel long prologue.
Five years has passed since Vihaan Sundragon was murdered by Roderick Kael, giving him the throne of Nfaros. The three princesses, Adlae, Brae and Mirae, were forced to give up everything they knew. Each sister wound up on different path. Now their paths are coming together. The Winter Queen is bringing snows which have not fallen in five years. In the woods, one who survived and is now ready to take a new path. While in the city, another is forced to live with very little and is watched constantly. From across the ocean come two strangers looking for more. Now the time has come to test love and loyalty. Evil stirs and it will take quite a bit to defeat it.
The Winter Queen is fast paced and very well written. The world Erica Marie Hogan builds is amazing. You quickly become immersed in the story and do not want to put it down. The three sisters are amazing with their strength and resilience. Not a one of them has forgotten and each is determined to rectify the wrongs where they can. First they have to survive the twists and turns their lives are taking. How they survive will be revealed under the masterful direction of Lisa Marie Hogan. I highly recommend this story to all lovers of fantasy.
