2.5 stars rounded up to 3, because it's readable, and better than many Intrigues, but a definite disappointment considering that the previous book Appalachian Prey was so good. This has Charlotte "I Can Do It Myself" Helms arriving at Mount Lavender in belief that a sex trafficking ring is in operation there. This sees her teaming up with new deputy James "I Don't Want To Talk About It" Tedder (brother of Lilah from the previous book). The mission is personal for Charlotte, as one of the victims is the daughter of her best friend.

There are a few tropes in romance I don't like, and I seem to keep finding more! One I've noticed a couple of times is the heroine who is fiercely determined to be independent and self-sufficient. So whenever anybody tries to help her (usually the hero), she always responds with "I can do it myself" or "I don't need your help." Now, independence is all well and good, and you should be able to look after yourself, but I can't help but feel when you keep on giving out statements like that, time after time, you move from independent to ungrateful. That was definitely the case with Charlotte here, and it got a little exasperating!

James was a solid hero. He's a war vet and suffering PTSD. Often, I have difficulty with PTSD heroes in romance (as much as I admire veterans and have utmost sympathy for PTSD sufferers), because that often becomes the focus of the story and it can be an exhaustive headspace to be in. Here, the PTSD angle only serves to inform his character and how he reacts in certain situations, which I was grateful for!

Unfortunately, the plot wasn't great shakes. After the great mystery and suspense of the previous book, this was pretty straightforward and, well....flat. There's a sex trafficking ring, we know from the git-go who is behind it, and it often feels like a case of treading water until the wave hits. Events are padded out with the arrest of some ginseng poachers and a domestic dispute. I mean, really? This is a romantic suspense dealing with human/sex trafficking! No budgetary considerations! In a book, your only limit is your imagination! So it's disappointing this failed to do much interesting with its gritty subject matter. (And makes me think this line isn't the appropriate one for human/sex trafficking stories).

Curiously, this book seems to take place a good year or so after the previous one (despite being published just a month later). Lilah was pregnant in that one, but here she's had her child. The child is referred to as a baby, but at one stage says, "See the fire, Uncle Jim Bob!" So is it a baby or a 5 year old???

Once again, I enjoyed the setting. Always good to take a step outside Texas and Colorado in these books once in a while. But the book never took the opportunities it should have considering its subject matter, and concerned itself with too much extraneous material that didn't have much to do with the real story. And I could have gone without that minor character who "has the sight"!

Emotionally gripping, sweetly thrilling, action packed, sexy romantic adventure filled with danger, mystery and two people forced to trust each other to survive.

Detective Charlotte Helms is a strong, dedicated and on the trail of a human trafficking ring when her best friends daughter is taken. The cabin in the Appalachian mountains she is staying at (broke into) ends up belonging to Officer James Tedder and he wants answers. Loved their chemistry and determination. Highly entertaining and engaging romantic adventure.

An OK read for me. The heroine is one of those I'm Tough and Strong and Can Take Care of Myself types, so she did occasionally get on my nerves and the hero is OK. Former military, touch of PTSD, trying to do right by his community, yada yada yada.

My main quibble here is the complete ineptness of the villains who literally just had to sit back and not draw attention to themselves - but then we wouldn't have much of a story. Instead they decide to open fire on cops driving patrol cars and send threatening text messages 🤦‍♀️. Like, way to blend in dudes.

Detective Charlotte Helms from the Atlanta PD is extremely dedicated to her work, so much so that it got her suspended for insubordination. The case on human trafficking she had been working on for a year has become personal: her best friend Tanya’s daughter, Jenny, has vanished, and Charlotte fears Jenny was abducted by the traffickers, who seemed to have moved their operation to the Appalachian Mountains. Charlotte is acting on her own in Lavender Mountain, and when the owner of the cabin where she was living makes an appearance, things take an interesting turn. The cabin belongs to Officer James Tedder, and his well-ordered world is about to be shaken.

I had really loved Appalachian Prey, but this is even better, and while characters from the previous book are featured, APPALACHIAN ABDUCTION stands firmly on its own. Charlotte and James are fabulous characters, and what I appreciated the most is that they are believable all the way, as people and as police officers. I loved that there weren’t long-lasting misunderstandings, and their chemistry was palpable from the start; theirs was a slow burn that was perfectly integrated to the suspense, and you feel that when it happens, that they are good for the long run.

Debbie Herbert has an innate sense of pacing that made this book a pleasure to read: the pace is nice and steady throughout with perfectly timed explosive bursts of action. The romance takes place in a realistic timeframe, and the romantic moments happen at the right place and the right time. There were a few fabulous little details, such as Charlotte’s first uniform and the dye job that are not crucial to the plot, although they do serve a purpose; they were absolutely delightful and enhanced the story. There was also a very clever plot twist that involved something that I never knew was illegal.

And now I must come to what really, really wowed me: Debbie Herbert’s writing. The descriptions are vivid, the fights are very creatively crafted, the characters exceptionally well-defined, the dialogues are excellent and adapted to the characters’ personalities, and the prose is amazingly smooth, eloquent, and wonderfully smooth. Ms. Herbert’s writing is subtly elegant, vibrant and dynamic, and all this gorgeousness never distracts from the tightly plotted story. A most excellent book!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The second story conceived by Debbie Herbert for her series of books taking place in northern Georgia is absolutely outstanding. Danger happens in the opening scene, and the peril keeps escalating all the way through until the stunning conclusion. Add in all the realistically portrayed characters, and I was hooked on every carefully invented aspect. APPALACHIAN ABDUCTION really is a novel that cannot be put down once started, as there is never a spot where a development is not riveting plus noteworthy.

When Charlotte Helms came to a gated community located on Blood Mountain in Georgia, she hoped to find evidence related to the disappearance of a girl. Though the Atlanta undercover detective has been forbidden to work on the case, her friendship with the mother of the teenager makes the case personal, and she plans on using some of her skills to find any solid proof. But when she and a local deputy sheriff named James Tedder encounter one another, he could ruin her carefully thought-out scheme to safely retrieve the girl.

Although the woman who had broken into the cabin belonging to James did not want to be caught, he was equally determined to track Charlotte down and get answers. Upon learning about the missing girl who might possibly be a human-trafficking victim, he wants to discover if someone in the area is a participant in this terrible crime. As James and Charlotte are given the chance to look for any confirmation about the illegal activity, they have a very hard time keeping their feelings from becoming involved in the case and especially each other.

There is so much to love about APPALACHIAN ABDUCTION, as details are precise and come across as accurate. No matter where a situation occurs, I got a clear picture of the area. The threats to anyone are very real, and those endangering either James or Charlotte could often be deadly. I was frequently worried about what was going to happen to these two, as both were not people who backed down and always gave their all. I definitely admired Charlotte and James as they tried to make sure anyone innocent was rescued, while the guilty party was brought to justice. Human-trafficking is one of the worst things a criminal can take part in, and I was anxious to see how all events would play out. A big shocker awaits them as they seek out answers, and the author made the surprise convincing.

I thought James and Charlotte are extremely likable individuals. He had spent time as a soldier before coming home and taking a position with the local police department, and his time in the Middle East still affects him without warning. These moments were poignantly depicted and certainly believable. Charlotte has dedicated herself to helping others, and her persistence to help a teenager had me seeing her as someone who puts others before her own wishes. The relationship of the couple always seems genuine, as their discussions are candid and feelings are expressed with sincerity. Several characters from the prior book make appearances, and though that story does not have to be read first, it should not be missed. I am so looking forward to seeing what Debbie Herbert imagines next.

I voluntarily reviewed the book, and all comments are my honest opinion

This was first published on my blog " Lecture toute une Aventure"

Lavender Mountains are really not a safe place to live as it seems. This book take place after " Appalachian Prey" and we see Liland and Harlan but this book focus on another couple Lilah's brother James (jimmy) and Charlotte so this one can really be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

James is working under Harlan after being retired from the military but he still has some bad effect from his time in Afghanistan and he does doubt himself...when he discover an intruder in his father's cabin he isn't letting go until he discover the real story of Charlotte and when he does he can't leave her alone.
I loved that he was loyal, he is determined but also a bit wild. He does his job well but we can see that it doesn't complete him yet. He is also resourceful and quite stubborn.
Charlotte also is really stubborn...she has a lead to find the missing daughter of her friend and she let nothing get in her way but doing so she also renounce to help she really need. When she is forced to trust James...she tries not to let her past dictate her reaction but it's not easy and she sure is paranoid. However, i do admire her determination.

Both have been hurt and learning to work together quite a bit like them against the world help them to heal bit by bit .

Now, the investigation is interesting, the action fast paced but i did prefer Appalachian prey. In this book we get less info about the setting, the people but really focus more on Charlotte and James past which is good but i kind of missing the rural ambiance. Also Harlan was a bit strict and while that's normal with his past he should have been more open minded in my opinion. he did well but not fast enough and not the right way so for those who have read the other story it can be disappointing but for new reader it should be a problem at all.

So all together it's a good romance suspense that works perfectly as standalone without cliffhanger

A fun read! Spunky Charlotte, and James Tedder, who has some unresolved issues, have a good chemistry together for this story. The characters build at a nice pace, and you're never asking questions of 'why', or 'who'. The plot is solid, yet there are some surprises that are nice. The book is well written, and very visual. I like visual. I want to see the story play out in my mind while I read, not just read words on a page like an essay. Herbert does this very well, which is why I am drawn to her stories. The book was a good length, told the story perfectly, and didn't contain a lot of fluff for filling.

Although this is the second book in the series, it is a stand-alone. It takes place in the same town, and revolves around the Tedder family. I do recommend reading Appalachian Prey as well, because it was enjoyable too. I do home there will be more in this series. ;-) #housewisereview #arc #ramblingboho

This review is of Appalachian Abduction by Debbie Herbert.
Note: this review contains spoilers!
When you hear of human trafficking, you think of big cities like New York or Atlanta. You don’t think of quiet, wooded Appalachia. But then you haven’t met Charlotte and Richard and Maddie Stowers.
Charlotte is on a mission to find her friend’s daughter and that mission has led her to the Stowers and Lavender Mountain and Officer James Tedder. Charlotte has had a tough time being undercover in Atlanta and she’s been suspended for insubordination. But she won’t stop until she finds Jenny and the longer he knows her, the more James feels the same way.
The characters are well developed and the romance adds spice to the mystery of the kidnaping and everything else that is going on. Charlotte learns to trust James, but who else is trustworthy? Will they find Jenny in time? You’ll have to read this to find out!
I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

There is something so comforting about returning to a familiar series! While Harlequin doesn't do a series in the regular style of the same characters for every book, it was a lovely tie in that the new main character is the brother of the previous main character!

The subject matter is a little darker than normal for this publisher, but I feel it keeps you in reality more than their more romantic lines. The first one was like that as well. I don't know if it's just the Intrigue Line or this series, but I like it!

The only thing I did not like was the main guy was TOO chivalrous. To the point of not believing a woman, who had been an undercover cop for almost a DECADE, could take care of herself.

I do wish that the 3rd book would be a continuation of the Tedder family. I feel like the mom could have come back (not a real spoiler for anything). But they are setting the character up in this book for the next, so that is a nice touch.

Charlotte Helms is on a mission to rescue her best friend's daughter and she is happy to risk suspension and her career to find her and rescue her. James Tedder is a war veteran turned small town cop who he discovers and pulls a gun on him. Whilst he admires her when he is forced to be her partner trying to crack the child trafficking ring can her trust her to have his back let alone look after his heart?

This is a great development in the Appalachian world that this author has created where a surprising serious crime is right under their noses. There was just so much drama and danger wrapped with twists and turns as a sweet love story developed around the plot of this book. I really liked the way the story developed and how it progressed towards a grand finale at the end. Well written and very enjoyable.

Detective Charlotte Helms is on the trail of a child trafficking ring she believes to be in the north Georgia mountains. She’s a cop from Atlanta working undercover. Unbeknownst to her, the cabin she squats in belongs to Officer James Tedder from the local sheriff’s department. After learning why she’s in the area, he joins in the search. There are some really tense moments and I couldn’t seem to read fast enough it was so exciting. This is one book I couldn’t put down. I haven’t read the previous book but this one was fine as a stand alone. It featured characters that were in the previous book Appalachian Prey. I will certainly be reading it soon. I really liked how the romance was woven into this story. It didn’t feel unnatural like some books that make you think it couldn’t happen while on a serious case. It was more subtle and didn’t feel rushed. I love this author’s writing style!

Appalachian Abduction is suspenseful. It held my attention from the first chapter. A rogue undercover cop in a small community following up on a sex trafficking ring. Trespassing on another officer's property could be a rookie mistake that can get you detected quickly but when the case is personal you don't always check things out the way the should be.

Charlotte and James are so against each other in the beginning but eventually learn to grow on each other. The two make a perfect pair once they take the time to properly understand one another. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about them in the Appalachian's :)

The story is riveting, and once again, the characters are realistic in their portrayal of emotions and the decisions they ultimately make to move the story forward.  The suspense is at a high alert level and the heat from these two characters is undeniable.  Debbie has done a great job in balancing both aspects of the story.  I was just as interested in solving the mystery and getting the bad guys as I was the relationship forming between Charlotte and James.  I cannot wait to see what else this author churns out in the future.

Loved this book. Suspense, romance. When Officer James Tedder finds Charlotte Helms in his home he doesn’t know what to make of the situation.

Charlotte Helms doesn’t know what to make of Officer James Tedder but soon learns to trust him. She needs to find her friends daughter before time runs out. She needs to prove to James and Sheriff Sampson that something is going on in Lavender Mountain and it isn’t good.

Twist and turns. I couldn’t put down.

Must read and also Appalachian Prey it comes before this one.

Timely subject

This book addresses the subject of human trafficking and how it insidiously creeps into the best of locations. I loved the first main character and her determination to end one particular ring that has abducted her best friend's daughter. The cast of characters is varied and just like the people we meet every day. The only thing is that I'd like to see a list of agencies to contact if you suspect that a trafficking ring has invaded your town, plus resources for the girls and women trafficked.

Detective Charlotte Helms has been suspended because she is trying to find those involved in the trafficking ring to save her best friends daughter and other girls. But when Officer James Tedder finds someone at his dads old cabin, he runs into Charlotte and tries to learn what she's here for. Loved the way their partnership grew in the way of helping one another as well as turning into more. There are definitely more dirty authority out there that Harlan is going to discover.

A great follow up to Appalachian prey ! We get to see what Harlan and Lilith are up too while being drawn into the Tedder family further. Full of suspense and just enough romance it’s a book you’ll read in one wonderful binge!! Debbie is a wonderful author who writes about people and places that are created so well your POSITIVE they really exist!

I meant to leave a review before now, but I've had a lot going on!

Love love love Debbie's books and this one is one of her best works yet. I love how in this book you already know who the bad guy is, but you get to "catch" the bad guy with them. It's full of action and still has plenty of suspense.

Great read!

A brief larger print novel that was a free book sent from Harlequin. It was very light and somewhat entertaining but it did not float my boat. It just had no depth or much of a plot. The characters were kind of believable. The interesting part was that the story took place in Elmore county. Elmore was my previous married name.

Appalachian Abduction

Good storyline. Murder, kidnappings, missing girls and a place to hide. The mountain had it all. James and Charlotte joined together to wipe out the sex trafficking ring before they joined for life.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as I did the first in this HI series. While I found James to be more likable than Harlan, I didn't think there was much chemistry with Charlotte. I also found the "mystery" quite lacking.
