Kendra Kellogg's back in town. Big Falls and Dax Russell will never be the same.
Con-artist Kendra is back in small-town Big Falls for one reason to save her father's life. Jack is dead unless Kendra can get his kingpin captor what he wants. And what he wants is for Dax Russell, Kendra's ex-lover and the only mark she ever regretted conning, to take over his father's thoroughbred racetrack, Aurora Downs.
Dax is the sole heir to a legacy he doesn't want, from a hateful father who never showed love. All the other tracks in Aurora Springs NY belong to the State Racing Association. When there are no more relatives to inherit it, Aurora Downs becomes their property as well.
And that's fine with Dax.
Sadly, it's not fine with Kendra. If Dax refuses his inheritance it will spell her father's end. So she has to con the sweetest, sexiest man she's ever known. Again. And that means spending Thanksgiving with the most honest family in Oklahoma.
For Dax, Kendra's return means a second chance with the only woman he's ever loved.
For Kendra, it's a life and death game of deception.
Fooling a man who knows her so well is a challenge.
Trying not to fall in love with him is impossible.
I live in the teeny, tiny town of Taylor, NY, (Alliteration Alert!) though my mailing address is Cincinnatus, my telephone exchange is Truxton and I pay taxes and vote in Cuyler. All of these are at least in the same rural county in the southern hills of New York State; Cortland County. There are more cattle than people here. The nearest “big” cities are Syracuse and Binghamton and they are an hour away, in different directions, and not really all that big by most standards, though they both seem humongous to me. I look out my window to see rolling, green, thickly forested hills, wildflower laden meadows and wide open blue, blue skies. My road is barely paved. The nearest neighboring place is a 700 acre dairy farm.
My house is a big, century old farmhouse. I moved in here after my divorce in 2006. Just a little over a year later, the house, which I had named, SERENITY, burned. It was 99% gutted, and I lost my two dogs, Sally, an 11-year-old great Dane, and Wrinkles, my 14-year-old, blind bulldog. This was the culmination of my Dark Night of the soul, which had seemed to hit me all at once in 2006-2007. My mother died that year, after a 14 month battle with pancreatic cancer. She was only 60. The youngest of my five daughters had left home that same year, and while that’s not a tragedy at all, it felt like one to me. Then came the divorce. And finally there was the fire--it seemed my darkest night wasn’t quite finished with me after all. I had lost almost everything before that point, and as I poked through the wet ashes and soot the next day, I realized that I had now been stripped all the way to the bone.
No better time to start over. (And no, I didn’t come to that realization that day--there were a few days of wallowing in pity first, particularly the day after the fire, when I hit a deer and smashed up my car, which I was practically living in!)
That’s when I started to laugh. Just sat on the side of the road as the deer bounded, uninjured and carefree, out of sight, and laughed. It was just too ridiculous at that point, to do anything else!
And from there, I picked myself up, and brushed myself off, and said, okay, there’s only one way to go from here. Forward. And that’s what I did. There I was at the age of harrurmphemmph, living in my one, mostly undamaged remaining room, with a dorm-sized mini-fridge, a futon, a TV, my cat (nine lives!) and a laptop. And not much else. (Though thank goodness the room that survived the fire, was a room that had its own attached bathroom!)
Since then I have rebuilt my beloved home, which really has become my haven, my “Serenity.” I share it now with my fiancé, Lance, and we have accumulated quite the little family together. “Little” being a relative term. We have a pair of English Mastiffs, Dozer and Daisy, who weigh 203 pounds and 208 pounds respectively, and a little pudgy English Bulldog named Niblet, who is bigger than both of them, inside her mind. We also have the aforementioned cat, Glorificus (“Glory” for short,) who adores her canine pups and keeps them firmly in line. And we've acquired a pair of stray cats as well, a mother and son, Luna (Lulu for short) and Butters aka Buddy. Lulu showed up pregnant during a lunar eclipse, had a litter, and vanished again. We found homes for all the kittens except one. Butters. We got him fixed and kept him. A few months later, Lulu returned, again expecting. This litter was born on the "Monster Moon." Again, all the kittens were spayed and neutered and placed in homes, and this time we got Lulu to the vet in time to spay her before the cycle could repeat.
Glory is not amused.
She has a story of her own, my old Glory cat, having been with me before the Dark Times descended, she went through it all with me, moved with me, survived the fire, and remains with me still. She's tolerating the newcomers. Barely.
My partner is an artist, a mechanic, a welder and an inventor, and the rumors are true, he is much younger than I

Shine On Oklahoma: The McIntyre Men Book 4 is written by Maggie Shayne. It is part of a series about a family in Oklahoma. The book is really good and the series probably is too. You can read the books out of order and they still make sense. Dax Russell and his Father were estranged. That didn’t keep Dax from coming to his bedside when his Father was dying. His Father had fired him when Dax borrowed (stole) some money to help her with a kidney transplant. Not only did he lose his job and his Father; but he lost the girl. She had conned him! Now he was given a chance to be forgiven by his Father; but Father refused. Dax told him he didn’t want anything from him. Father told him he had to take the business or it would go to the State Racing Association and his Mother would be in trouble. Dax has to find out what his Father was talking about and keep his Mother safe. To add to Dax’s problems, the girl who conned him has returned. Why does she want to run the racing business? What is in it for her? As he tries to figure this out, he finds himself drawn to her once more. Can he trust her this time?
I would like to give this book 4.5 stars, but I just can't give it 5. I almost quit reading it near the beginning because it felt like I had walked into a movie a half hour after it started. Everyone knew each other, but I didn't know anyone. It felt like I had missed out on reading the first few chapters, and I didn't know any of the characters. Because I have read books by Maggie Shayne before, I decided to read one more chapter, fortunately for me. I really enjoyed it with it's laugh out loud moments as well as the teary, the romantic, and the suspenseful moments.
I have really enjoyed reading Shayne’s book series up until this one. What a major disappointment this particular book was from start to finish! Language included! Someone, who has read the series, tell me that Jason’s story is waiting as it should have followed behind Rob and Joey’s story lines. Kiley and Kendra, no way should have become a more important character than the men, and Dax isn’t even a McIntyre! And the language, it’s okay for all forms of media to write without using the “F” word! No wonder so many people think it’s okay to swear anywhere and everywhere because it is so liberally used, but it’s NOT okay!
Great to visit Big Falls Oklahoma and the McIntyre families.. Kendra returns to Big Falls...She is trying to rescue her father from a notorious Drug kingpin.. She and Dax were beginning a relationship on her previous visit..But things just didn't work.. After Dax's father dies, he doesn't want anything to do with the family race track business..But Kendra needs him to reconsider and take over the business.. But the tables turn and Kendra's dad is in on the con...at the beginning.. Can they take up where they left off? Or is their relationship doomed?
Sweet romantic suspense that was very unrealistic. Bad people who change their evil ways and are graciously accepted by the pillars of the community in the end. A guys who falls for a girl that swindled him out of a large sum of cash in the past and now he catches her in a con again, but Ioves her nonetheless. A guy who fractures his tibia and sets it himself to catch a villain and save the day. It’s a bit much at times, but it was still entertaining with a happy ending of course.
And this is no exception. Con artists abound in this book, and it is difficult to follow the con. All's well that ends well, though, and Ms Shayne does a wonderful job at bringing out the best in everyone. Loyal family and friends, good cop's with understanding and compassion, and love that shines through it all...another good read. Thanks, Ms Shayne. I received this book in a giveaway, and I am offering my review in hopes others will enjoy it as I did.
I don't normally comment on books however this one was required. This was a decent story although I don't know how you would fall in love with someone who bilked you out of a lot of money. Where this book really failed was in the editing. It seemed to get worse as the story went on. By the end of the book it was so annoying it almost took away from the storyline.
This book makes you laugh, tear up, and just enjoy life . Sometimes stories that continue loose the heart of the story. Not this series it started out as the Oklahoma Brands, moved to Texas, and in to The McIntyre Men. Through it all the depth of the characters stay the same and only get better.
When I started reading this it was fare As I read more I was hummm then I just keep reading and thought man this good. Then I get busy and start thinking this really isn’t that great. I would pick it and before I knew it I was hooked totally completely hooked. So my finals is it was better then I thought it was great. So glad I read it and never gave up.
This was a great story line! A lot of action in this book! Twins Kendra and Kiley's dad, Jack, almost got just what was coming to him. I Loved the chemistry between Kendra and Dax! I know everyone who reads this book will enjoy it! I will definitely recommend this book to others!
Lots of wonderful characters, love and fear. How to overcome the past and find love, family and what’s really important. Nice romances, people who learn to get over their past. Most important, how to get beyond pain from the past to accept and give love, support and a home.
About Kendra Kellogg, Kiley's twin sister, who unlike Kiley, embraced her life of conning others and Dax Russell who seems somewhat wishy-washy weak in earlier books, this one tries to reclaim both of them with mixed success. I don't think either will ever be my favorite characters in this series. The story itself has its moments though.
Up until this book, Maggie Shayne's ability to find the best and make it happen in a mostly believable way has been impressive. With this one? Not so much. Without giving anything away (I hate spoilers), I just do not see parts of this one as likely...
The best con was conning your self. First you help your twin con dad, then dad attempts to con you. Then he sends you to con the man you love. You can't pull the con off because you love him. It all falls apart because Dad gets conned by the gangsters now the whole family is going straight. In the end love concurs all.
I highly recommend this and all of Maggie shayne's stories. I love to see recurring characters and what everyone has been up to. This story has emotional ups and downs that will keep you reading through the end.
I have been reading your books for a long time be it paranormal or just straight romance. I really enjoyed Kendra and Daxs story. I look forward to many adventurers with you.Thank you.
Loved this book. Kendra returns to pull another con again the man that had loved her once before. But she never imagined having feelings not only for Dax, but also for her future niece!
At its best. This romance was awesome. I loved all the drama. The deceit. The strong heroine who came through. The man who loved her and believed in her. Thank you for a great story
Great story with great characters. I really loved being able to revisit some of my favorite characters from a series that made me fall in love with Maggie's writing the first time I read one of her books!
Wasn't sure all the strings were going to be tied up by the end as there are a ton of them. It did take me a bit to get everyone straight as I have not read books 1 - 3 yet, definitely on my list.
This one was so/so for me. I don't know if it would have helped to have read the other books in the series and had some of the backstory. I didn't really like either of the main characters. The con woman who refuses to change or the mark who lets her do it to him again. Just didn't grab me.
Love this series, but wondering where is Jasons story? Looking forward to reading Allies story tomorrow. But really loved how Dax got Kendra to realize all she needed to go straight was a little love.
This book moved along at a leisurely clip. Kept your attention because you didn't know who was conning who (whom). This author needs to include a family tree with every novel. Not saying much else but to read it!
I truly love the Brand/McIntyre series. These books are well worth downloading. Each story adds more to the family with a great adventure along the way.
