"As a speculative fiction author, I believe in entertaining my readers by offering a temporary escape from reality. Whilst I aspire to write fun, addictive adventures with characters my readers can relate to, I need to write meaningful and emotive stories alongside them to explore the depths of what it is be human—in doing so, I can encourage people to also look within. I feel through writing we face our darkest fears, explore infinite new worlds and realise our true purpose. Creative writing helps me to understand what my purpose is."
This is a collection of "Finding Pandora" by Hardcastle, and it's intense in its fantasy and supernatural driven storylines. Arriette Monroe is the main character, and has a lot of depth and intensity. There are four stories, World, Heaven, Infinity and Eternity, and each one is important to the story and a representation of the poem that inspired this. Hardcastle has a talent, a great talent for putting together these stories. The premise of each one, and Arriette is a savior that The Recruit is relying on. There is a passion to writing this story, and it blends in with the paranormal, and the chaotic life of trying to live for the moment. I like how different characters were presented in the story, for instance, a Vampyr, "Arriette flinched when Vampyr Dion moved to greet her with a hospitable hug. It was too out of the ordinary. Vampyrs weren't affectionate by nature and neither, Arriette soon realised, was she. Vegetarian or not, Arriette was going to question Dion to within inch of her life before accepting the gesture, or what was left of her life anyway." And this was just the beginning. Each story has its unique storytelling but it also brings the collection together as if it were one. Well done.
The author was so lovely when I met her, and she did an amazing job with this story.
However, I'm not very accustomed to the high fantasy genre and I'm not sure if this was the best introduction, as the world was difficult to get used to and there were a lot of different characters to keep up with, although I did still find myself genuinely loving these characters by the end. My only complain would be the story seemed to move too quickly at times, meaning I was unable to fully engage with what was happening.
