Spirit Riding Free #2

Lucky and the Mustangs of Miradero

Rate this book
In this second novel based on DreamWorks Animation's Spirit Riding Free by award-winning author Suzanne Selfors, it's Lucky Prescott's first winter in the West! After Miradero Mel, the town's weather-predicting pig, forecasts that this winter is going to be one of the harshest Miradero's had in decades, Lucky and her best friends, Pru and Abigail, are excited to see what kind of adventures they can have in the snow. Their excitement quickly shifts to concern for the townspeople, who might not have enough food to last the season, and for Miradero's animals, like Lucky's wild stallion Spirit, who has a new foal in his herd. Will they be able to survive the worst that winter has to offer? The cold winter winds are also the winds of change at home for Lucky and her single father, Jim. It seems everyone has an opinion about Jim's marriage prospects. But Lucky likes their new life just the way it is. She isn't ready for a new mom....But what if her dad is ready for a new wife? Lucky's first winter in Miradero promises to be one that she, her best friends, and Spirit will never forget!

This book was just as wonderful as the first! I honestly prefer the books to the Netflix series because there is so much more depth in the story. For example, Pru's mom is actually mentioned, and has a big role in the story, & We discover why Maricela hates the PALS so much. This is a perfect winter read for readers of all ages who love the old Spirit movie, the new Netflix series, or just horses in general.

Lucky just moved there and they are at a festival in the fall and winter is coming early. They have this thing where pigs tell weather, if it stays in its pen then its going to be very bad, if it does come out of its pen then the weather will be cheerful. Lucky and her new friends Pru and Abigail discover that a filly in Spirit's herd is sick and has colic. They have to save it when a bad storm is coming in. I think Spirit saves Lucky from a falling tree when she comes with this foal and Pru has to go to town to get her mother who is a vet. They were very worried because colic and sickness can bring a filly that is very young and isn't nursing to death. Everything is fine, but Maricella proves to actually be very nice at the end and loves the filly and wants it to be hers. Maricella is usually a snob, but she turns out to be nice, she was just hurting because she thinks that Pru stole Abigail away when they were friends.

Another wonderful book. I don't really have much to say other than if you like the television series than you'll like this book. Same lovable characters and crazy situations they find themselves in like in the show.

I am appalled though at how Lucky risks her life for the horses that she loves. The fact she decides to stay by herself with Spirit's herd to look after the sick foal in the middle of a blizzard. Akakajjamamam Lucky. She is such a good and king hearted person, but again the risks she takes 😭😭😭😭😭😭

Lucky is definitely my fave character. Representation matters!

Another sweet easy read from this series. A little more realistic this time, but still with an engaging story. Excellent for 7-9 year old girls.
