An exceptional read! Some British experiences of the invasion of Normandy. Written in 1980 while the participants where still alive and could tour the Normandy beaches with the authors, this slim 140 page book is a treasure for both the history buff and the general reader alike. Easy to follow with plenty of maps and pictures of the battle scenes then and now. It is also a battlefield guide with directions for visitors on how to approach the scenes of the events by car and then on foot through the back lanes and fields. The first person accounts ring true with no sense of false bravado but at the same time, with typical British understatement, very poignant as the deaths of many fine men are recorded.
The book's Title is from a Churchill speech delivered to the French people after their initial defeat forecasting the deliverance of D-DAY 4 long years in the future. "Good night, then. Sleep to gather strength for the morning, for the morning will come. Brightly will it shine on the brave and true; kindly upon all who suffer for the cause; glorious upon the tombs of heroes—thus will shine the dawn."
