Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration.
He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended.
His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts.
In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.

Heartbreak is one thing, my ego's another / I beg you, don't embarrass me, motherfu-I mean… Like the others (Please Please Please – Sabrina Carpenter).

Can I just say that I’m tired of multi-verse stories? Exhausted even! I'm aware that the specific multi-verse storyline in Dragon Ball Super was technically written before Marvel got their grubby hands on the concept, but when I finally started reading this series and saw that there was a fighting tournament with contestants from different universes, I tilted my head back and groaned like I was being possessed. No joke, I looked like Fire Lord Ozai when Aang took away his bending. The only thing I like about how it’s used here is the twist where we learn that the main universe, the one where the story takes place, is actually the “bad universe” and that every other one is surprised at all the awful people that exist in it. Not only is that really funny to me, but there’s also an underlying hopefulness that warms my heart. That despite all the world ending threats happening with alarming frequency, absolutely nothing stops heroes like Goku from rising up and fighting to make things better. Cool stuff. It even makes me feel a little better about how it often feels like the real world exists in the worst timeline. Anyway, I’ve made it no secret that the original Dragon Ball manga is my all-time favorite… anything, and unfortunately my love does not extend to Dragon Ball Super (this one). It’s really just a retread of all the same themes and story arcs that the characters already went through in the original series with a different artist and an uglier coat of paint. I've got to say, I don't like the way the story develops all that much, it just lacks the same magic. It's like how Joker (2019) came across as more of a redundant imitation of King of Comedy rather than a loving homage. And you can tell by the fanboy prose that this new artist grew up with Dragon Ball because the way the characters are written in the new, new feels like a little boy playing with toys, just mashing shit together. Like damn, I didn't know this was written by Dave Filoni. Now, I know that Super was supervised by Akira Toriyama (R.I.P.), the original creator, for a large chunk of its run, but… I don’t know man, something's missing. Otherwise, I’m also just not a fan of when artists go back to their older works decades later, because what inevitably happens is fan interpretations of the art start to seep in the author’s mind until they eventually become one and the same. It might not be super noticeable, but I noticed! Oh, I noticed. For example, a lot of fans of Dragon Ball have gotten it in their heads that somehow Goku, the main character, is a dumb meathead manchild who’s also a terrible father. It’s odd really, because if you read the text, like, the actual manga, there’s literally nothing to support this. He’s often irresponsible and loves a good fight, a good challenge, but he always puts other people’s lives above his own fighter's pride and ego. Sure, he often spares the bad guys, but his decisions to do that are always proven to be the correct one throughout the narrative. I've had it, I won’t take the Goku slander any longer! He’s a damn hero!!! Well, he is in Dragon Ball, that is. In Super he’s every bit the flanderized, insensitive idiot that bad faith interpretations have turned him into. Ugh, and I could go on and on about Vegeta too! But I’ll give it a rest... for now.

A great comic of the Dragon Ball Super. I do like the condensed less time wasting version of the of the series but the only problem I found in this comic was the action was. It as good as the fight in the series. The were shortened a bit too much.

The book starts from the Frost taking his final form against Goku, till the end of the tournament. Then the start of the future Trunks saga. If the fight were a little better or the technique were a little better explained this would have been an easy 5 stars.

In the second volume of Dragon Ball Super, Dragon Ball does what Dragon Ball does best: fighting tournaments! It’s Universe 6 vs Universe 7 for the prize of the Super Dragon Balls! Who’ll win? (Clue: Goku is on Universe 7’s side!)

I was really looking forward to this one after that strong first volume so I was a bit let down with this disappointing second book. It’s not bad but it’s not that great either. The fighting felt rushed and wasn’t as exciting as it usually is and then, like a rancid fart, the worst Dragon Ball storyline ever – future Trunks and the Androids – wafts in threatening to stink up the whole series again! Nooooo!

I can see why Akira Toriyama’s focused on this idea of parallel universes as it allows him to shamelessly rehash his greatest hits under the veneer that it’s technically “new”. So we get a pseudo-Strongest Under the Heavens Tournament that pits Goku and Vegeta against the Freeza clone, Frost. I didn’t mind that much though as the Freeza arc is arguably the best Dragon Ball storyline for a reason and the fighting is generally entertaining enough to read. It’s cool to see Goku Kamehameha again and Vegeta destroying his opponent was satisfying after what that guy did up to that point.

There are some surprises in the fights too – Frost definitely isn’t as formidable as Freeza and has to rely on being extra-sneaky - and I liked the new Saiyan character, Cabbe, if only to see a new side to Vegeta who acts as a harsh, but effective, mentor to the kid. I expect we’ll see more of Cabbe later on as a feature of Dragon Ball is to continually grow the cast.

Toriyama is still able to balance drama and farce well. After the intense Vegeta/Frost and Goku/Hit fights, the nip-tastic Monaka – the Universe 7 “champion” - steps up and… yeah. I’ve always liked that Dragon Ball doesn’t take itself too seriously, I think that’s a big part of its success.

Maybe it’s a reaction to how some people viewed the original fights as overlong (which they definitely were though I’m in the camp of “Don’t care, they’re amazing, make them as long as you need!”), but the fights in this tournament felt truncated so I couldn’t really get that into them as much. There wasn’t much build-up to the matches, they ended abruptly and the new opponents (a giant robot, a guy wearing a long coat whose hands are in his pockets) are dull and unmemorable non-entities. And you’d be forgiven for forgetting the stakes as it doesn’t really factor into anything and the resolution of the tournament is glossed over and pointless.

To my dismay, the second half of the book returns to the dystopian future where the hated Androids came from. They were the absolute worst part of Dragon Ball Z and just the hint of that arc was enough to make me uneasy. I just don’t like future Trunks and his crappy world – the overly grim tone and derivative sci-fi elements (coughTerminatorcough) feel antithetical to Dragon Ball. Nor is it ever interesting and becomes especially tedious once the time-travel exposition kicks in. Maybe it’ll be good this time around with the new villain, Goku Black, but I won’t be complaining if Toriyama cuts it short like he did the Universes 6/7 tournament!

Toyotarou’s art is intentionally identical to Toriyama’s so there isn’t much to say there except to mention that Goku and Vegeta’s new powers – Super Saiyan Blue for Vegeta and Super Saiyan Red for Goku, aka Super Saiyan God – are a bit wasted in a black and white comic!

As a huge Dragon Ball fan, I’m glad to see new Dragon Ball books appearing but Volume 2 is a mediocre entry to the saga – definitely lower those expectations going in. Hopefully Volume 3 is more fun!

EN A thoroughly enjoyable read with plenty of laughs along the way.

Packed with action and intense combat scenes—everything we love about a Dragon Ball story.

The multiverse theme takes center stage in this new series, adding an exciting new layer to the franchise.

--

This volume provides exactly what you'd expect from Dragon Ball. There's plenty of action which is nicely balanced out with comedy and story progression. However, the plot doesn't hold the attention quite as well as the original or Dragon Ball Z manages to, and therefore leaves a lot of room for improvement.

Just like with the show, this arc really dialed up the tension, the I tail universe fights were cool and okay to read/watch again. But the parts in the parallel timeline with trunks and goku black is what I’ve really been pumped and psyched to finally start reading about.

This volume begins right where we left of, with a big tournament, which lasts more than half the book. Which normally might be a bad thing, but somehow I had a blast the whole way through. When the big tournament end though that's when we see a plot start to form. I thought this was a cool plot that I am intrigued to see more of. Overall, it was a pretty good read!

This volume mostly focuses on the Universe tournament with dragon balls at stake. I really want to love this series but there's this tone to the story so far that I just can't take seriously or aren't brought to fully appreciate.

A good amount of the volume focuses on battle scenes and at least that alone is always fun to "read" with the great artwork in it. It's sort of the fact that it's predictable most of the time that takes away a lot of its potential.

At least the Future Trunks story arc teases an interesting threat to come. Hopefully, it'll be what this series needs to seduce me.

Eh, meh. Don't think I'm going to continue with this series. While the tournament was fine, and I liked the various characters from universe 6, the arrival of future Trunks was the last straw. Aargh! The whole alternate future universes thing Toriyama tries to pull off again just doesn't work and is yawn-inducing. If you need a schematic to show how your plot works in your book that's a clear sign it might be not be working at all.
Also, the idea of making the manga a tie-in to the anime is quite infuriating. I don't care about the anime, I just wanted to read the manga. I didn't watch any of the anime for DB and DBZ - and was happy as a clam. Now, after reading the two DB Super manga volumes, I feel watching the anime is simply necessary as the manga volumes are fragmented, some plot points missing, and the whole just doesn't make much sense.

I wasn't interested in most of this volume, especially the part about the tournament. I found it extremely boring and pretty predictable.

I did somewhat enjoy the part that is the beginning of the Future Trunks story. But, I am unsure whether or not I will continue this series. My fiance' assures me that Volume 3 is better - but, I just don't know. It feels like a waste of my time.

I'm just really glad I haven't been wasting my time on the anime.

This was such a great volume! We have Goku fighting the others like frost here and cheating and stuff then Vegeta vs Cabba and its so cool, him mentoring this young saiyan to become a super saiyan and the battle between them is sweet but the main thing is Hit vs Goku, at first weird things are going on then we learn about his 0.1 time skip and then the real fight happens, and he manages to impress Hit and when their battle happens for real, its so cool what he does and funny thing with Monaka and then the appearance of Zeno-sama which changes things! And alas the story of the future trunks and what really happened in his timeline and what threat they face now and his coming and its setting up one of the best stories in this series!! The art was insanely good by Toyotaru and the writing by Toriyama-Sensei is just even better now!

2.5⭐️ I was going to stop reading this but… The second part of this volume got a lot better. I had missed alternate!Trunks and I did wonder what had happened to him after he got back to his time after he helped with the Cyborgs and Cell.
This evil!Goku (lookalike?) was unexpected.
I’m actually intrigued now.
