Heart of the Matter

Rate this book
Heart “Mac” MacKenzie is a tough police lieutenant in the rough streets of Brooklyn, New York. She’s a strong leader who doesn’t mind getting in the trenches with the men and women she leads at the seventy-four precinct. Her house, her people, and her family—both blue and blood—are the only things that matter. She would live and die for the blue wall that shields her from a traumatic past.

When her captain assigns her a high-profile kidnapping case that she doesn’t want, and insists she allows the missing girl’s irritatingly sexy uncle to tag along during the investigation, her blood boils. Mac has no choice but to do what she always does when things get out of control, lay down the law—her law.

Kenneth Searlington is a rich playboy from the Upper East Side of Manhattan. With stunning looks and an unlimited source of wealth, he’s used to being the center of everyone’s attention, especially the women that he comes in contact with.

His life is fun and carefree until his niece, Merridith is kidnapped, and he’s forced to seek out the help of his godfather an NYPD police captain, David Porter. Afraid and frustrated, Kenneth defers to his uncle’s expertise and his promise that he’s putting his best cop on the case, Lieutenant MacKenzie.

When Kenneth discovers “Mac” is actually a sexy as sin lady cop with a fiery temper to match, he decides mixing a little business with pleasure might be just the thing he needs to distract him from long-standing family issues that are trying to crawl their way back into the forefront of his life.

Each used to having their own way, can these two work together long enough to bring an innocent child home? Or will they settle their differences and unyielding attraction in a more carnal way and get right down to the heart of the matter?

LaQuette writes sexy, stylish, and sensational romance—the kind of sentimental-and-steamy stories that feel like Hallmark movies… if Hallmark suddenly ramped up the sexy and gave us the hawt love scenes we deserve. Expect big emotions, bold choices, and characters who strut through the pages like the book is their own personal runway.

A proud Brooklyn native, she crafts unapologetically bold, character-driven Black and interracial romances where Black women are joy-filled, desired, and absolutely treasured. These women know they belong on the page—and dare you to try telling them otherwise.

When this current Ph.D. student isn’t writing, reading, or studying, she’s probably trying on (or hunting down) her next must-have makeup find. And honestly? I'm not sure what to make of this story. It wasn't quite the book for me, content-wise, but I was willing to give it a go because there was something very compelling about the writing style. I don't love police procedural stories, but I've been meaning to read this author for some time.

However, this book needed an editor SO BADLY. Not only was it way too long (at 400 pages), but there were so many basic grammatical errors and run-on sentences that it was hard for me to get through. I started highlighting the editing errors as I was reading but then gave up after a while because there were too many of them.

Still, there were interesting elements about the writing, and I would want to read something else from this author in the future as long as it was well-edited.

***Rating: 4.5 stars***

This is my first read by author LaQuette, and I was very impressed. I consider this tale an unconventional love story because it involves more than just romance. Heart MacKenzie is truly the “heart” of this story. Romance is the backdrop, but Heart is a dedicated cop who eats, sleeps, and breathes blue. Being a cop isn’t something she does, but who she is, and everything else is secondary-that is until she meets, a tall, handsome, long-haired stranger named Kenneth Searlington.

I won’t summarize this entire narrative, because I want you to experience every nuance for yourself. This is the kind of story that you read, absorb, and reflect because there’s a lot going on. Heart is not only working a kidnapping case (which is how she meets Kenneth), but she’s dealing with her traumatic past which prevents her from literally having any physical contact with people, and a rat within her squad who’s gunning for her spot. How can Kenneth Searlington possibly compete with all of this? Very, very easily cause homeboy got the whip appeal and he put it on Heart! The love scenes in this story are straight FIYAHHHHH!!! I really liked Kenneth because not only was he good to Heart, he was good for Heart (and you will understand what I mean by this as you read).

The writing in this story flowed effortlessly, although some spots were admittedly too slow for me. This story is more cop drama and mystery than romance (which is a very good story, don’t get me wrong), but I wanted more Heart and Kenneth and less Heart the cop, and I felt some areas were a little long-winded. With that being said this is what sold me: I love how the author keeps it real as to why Heart, a black woman, chose a profession that isn’t always kind to people of color, and I quote:

“I’m a black woman in a commanding position in an organization that has been known to have abysmal race relations with minorities and the poor. I do this job so that more people that look like me, who have been marginalized by the system can understand that there are people in the system that represent their interests and uphold the law at the same time.”

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSS!!!! Because I’ll keep it real with y’all, until she made that statement, I was not feeling Heart the cop, but now I am totally feeling Heart the woman. Do not eff with her or what’s hers. You might find yourself thrown through a glass table. Ready for part 2….

Heart “Mac” MacKenzie is one of the most dynamic and complex characters I've ever read. She has suffered unimaginable trauma but rather than feel sorry for herself she focuses her energy on helping others and giving back to her community.

When Kenneth Searlington first meets Mac he isn't sure how to handle his conflicting responses to the intensely focused woman in front of him.

When a life threatening event strips both Mac and Kenneth of their outer personas and forces them to depend on each other for survival, the bond that forms between them as a result is one that neither anticipated.

HEART OF THE MATTER is a well written and complex story about life, love, faith, forgiveness and trust. LaQuette is one of the most honest and real authors I've ever encountered. Focusing on essence of human nature, while at the same time telling a story that is suspenseful, sensual, and emotionally engaging, HEART OF THE MATTER is a truly unique reading experience.

One of my favorite characteristics of LaQuette's books is that just about the time I think the story is coming to an end, I discover that I'm only half way through the story, and she's about to take me on a journey that leaves me breathless. With diverse characters and a descriptive writing style that is uniquely hers, HEART OF THE MATTER is a vivid contemporary romance that I would give more than 5 stars if I could!

This book is a thoroughly enjoyable and gripping emotional roller coaster ride. I really love Heart's characterization, and the plot is both interesting and well-paced. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect in terms of how much of the story would be about the kidnapping case versus the romance between Heart and Kenneth. I was quite pleased with how LaQuette crafted this novel, weaving the plot and the romance together, but not going too fast with the romance. I really got into reading how Kenneth and Heart started getting to know each other over the course of the case, and beyond. Their interactions were a blast to read throughout the book. Neither is a perfect person, and they really do make quite an interesting pair. There are a lot of plot twists and turns that I hadn't expected, so it was fun to go along for the ride and just experience the story. I enjoyed LaQuette's writing style, and it works well for the story.

The supporting cast is varied and interesting. One thing I appreciate about Heart of the Matter is that I could enjoy the book even while not being a fan of some of the characters' personality traits. I wanted to point this out because that's always a mark of a good book and good author for me, when they can get me invested in the story enough that my not liking a character's mannerisms doesn't wind up mattering. I don't see not liking some characters as a bad thing (and some "villains" are supposed to be disliked, anyway).

It's also worth adding that I rarely read M/F sex these days. The sex in this book is beautifully written and hot!

Overall, this is a great novel and my time reading was well spent. I recommend it to anyone who likes reading about crime and romance, with realistic characters. I look forward to reading more from LaQuette!

OMG...this book is riveting, intriguing, and fabulous. Kenneth is an Alpha male that is very sexy, very alpha and a force to be reckoned with. His heart is drawn to Heart. She is awesome, a strong woman with issues that nearly consume her. Thank God for a strong family that has shielded her but strengthened her with their love.

The story starts with a mystery that Heart is called into as Lt and as the toughest cop her Capt has. He was motivated to assign her to this case for several reasons. The case brings her in contact with Kenneth who is blown away for a lot reasons with this strong beautiful woman within minutes. Her heart proves to be as large as the city she calls home. Her strength as strong as her Iron Will to succeed.

Trouble with her past has kept her from allowing her weaknesses to overwhelm to her present and kept her guarded. Her family is made up of STRONG personalities and the ethics and tenacity to match. However, Kenneth brings a peace to her life that she has longed for and she brings a need he feels he much take care of. Mystery, prejudices, lies and deceit are woven in this story.

Heart is wounded in the line of duty, her team and family seek to protect her and not allow this to end her career. Kenneth brings the healing touch to help achieve a wholeness she has not known until now.
Its a page turner to see what happens next. Chemistry runs high with Kenneth and Heart. Other characters must have a part in the series to follow this one , hint hint...

This is my first read from this author but it will not be my last...GREAT JOB,...Thank you Ms. LaQuette

Heart of the matter is a well-written romance with spice, grown-folks sexy, mystery, and adventure. The story line is fast moving, but easily understood, and full of so many twists, I thought I was on a country road.
La Quette is a chess master moving pieces across the board and never revealing her game plan until she’s ready to finish the game. I love strong females, so I enjoyed seeing police Lieutenant, Heart “Mac” Mackenzie bold, fearless, and in-charge. She commanded respect, lived by her own rules, and still managed to be extremely vulnerable, like any real women. I don’t want to give away too much of the story, but I will say this. Even the strongest person has a weakness, it’s what makes them human. Mac has spent most of her adult life filling a void left after a traumatic event in her youth shook her foundation. As the saying goes, you can run, but you can’t hide.
Kenneth Searlington is a sleeper hero! When I first met him, I wanted to slap the taste out of his mouth. Wealthy, arrogant, confident, and commanding he made assumptions about Mac he shouldn’t have. Of course, she set him straight, and the push and pull began. The tension between them was delicious and kept the story fresh and unpredictable. As the story unfolded, and I learned more about him something strange happened. I changed my opinion, and he blossomed. No one is who they appear to be at first glance. La Quette showed that well with this one.

All I'm going to say is OMG. Well actually I'm going to say more I loved Heart of the Matter. I loved Mac's kiss a$$ and taking names attitude. And I feel in love with Kenneth almost immediately. Mac needed him so bad. I loved how we didn't find out the real cause of Mac's touching issues until closer toward the end. I loved how you wrote about the kidnapping and the rescue. I was glad to see that Merri ended up where she really needed to be. I was so upset at the loss both Heart and Kenneth endured and had to endure. I have never read a book before that had so many different characters that I loved to hate. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. Thank you so much for sending me a copy of Heart of the Matter it was seriously the bomb. I received a copy of Heart of the Matter for free, in place of an honest review and I honestly loved it, this book is a MUST read.

Beautiful Story- BRAB ONLINE BOOK CLUB

This is the first book I've read by this author and it certainly won't be the last. Romantic suspense is one of my favorite genres and this story did not disappoint. it had me hooked from the beginning all the way to the end.

Kenneth Serlington and Heart MacKenzie met under unusual circumstances. His niece was allegedly kidnapped and Heart was ordered by her Captain to take the case. They were total opposites, who came together during the investigation.

What I really love about this book was the author's attention to detail. She made sure we understood each character and what led them to where they were in the story. The suspense had me on edge; I wanted to know what was happening but I had to read each page to find out. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

I was not expecting this book to be a five star. reason I the cover I think I've seen it more than a dozen times. however like glory monroe books the content of the novel outweighs the lack of cover appeal. I simply love all the characters heart was all that Kenneth was the perfect hero for this alpha woman and he loved every moment with her.Laquette filled 427 pages with suspense love spiritual soul searching deep moments. Enjoyable read

I enjoyed the chemistry between Heart and Kenneth..I was glad that the author allowed the two characters to get to know each other before jumping into bed with each other. My only issue was the unprotected sex and the fact that she tried to swallow his "juices"...I know these things happen in real life...but know your partner's status...especially since he was such a love 'em and leave 'em ladies man in the past.

What matters to a heart.

This book was simply amazing. I hated that it ended. Heart and Kenneth story was sensual, positive, and breathe of fresh air. Heart and Kenneth weave their way through hurt, betrayal, and death to love in unexpected places. I highly recommend this book. Right, it free on prime, so take advantage of it.

Loved It!!!

There is nothing bad I can say about this story. All characters were believable and even interesting. But the most important thing for me was that the characters talked like real people. Most books lack that 1 important aspect when writing. Please keep up the good work. You could become 1 of my new favorite authors.

Fitting title

This book is powerful. A lot of the relationships would have been able to stand in the real world. The character heart, was broken but so strong. When she found her fix , it was on. Love this book.

Didn’t Want to Leave

It was so good and so much fun! I kept looking at the percent finished wondering what else would happen. Then I kept looking because I didn’t want to see 100%!

Heart Mackenzie has a past like we all do, but hers has enough trauma to make her order everything around her. She’s a cop, a damn good one and you get the fun of police stories without too much technicalities. (Sometimes it feels like the other way around). She is called in on a case that she certainly doesn’t want to do, and the people attached to it aren’t exactly helping.

Kenneth Searlington wants justice and Mac is supposed to give it to him. Too bad she won’t take his pushing and just bow to his wishes. He’s rich and mostly expects that to fix everything and he wasn’t too ready for Mac.

The ensuing case, surprises, connections, and love that ensues by dragging them kicking and screaming is cleverly written and a little joy to read. I really look forward to reading more!!!

This is my first book from this author. The writing was good, the plot was a lot to take in, it kind of ran all over the place. Steam level was great once we got there, again that took awhile. I think this book could have really knocked it out of the park had it been made about 100-150 pages shorter. At almost 600pgs it was just too long for a contemporary romance novel. Not the author's fault, I blame her editor.

I enjoyed the main characters, really felt the attraction between them. Just a lot of the extraneous stuff going on around them that I had the majority of problems with. Still, it was a good enough book to read another from this author.

Okay, this book had a couple of typos/misspellings that stuck out to me. The first quarter of the book was weirdly formatted as well. I didn't knock anything off for that, just they bothered me enough to point them out.

Good read

This was a long and complex story. It had a loit of moving parts that flowed well. Some parts felt like filler but could lead to other stories. I saw at least two or three other spinoffs from this tale. I will read the author again. Can't wait to read book 2 of this series. Good job!

So glad I came across this author and her books! I love reading about stories like this one and Mac/Kenneth was not disappointing. They definitely had a interesting way of finding one another but in the end it was best for both of them . I can’t wait to read on to see how they navigate captain life and marriage !

“Heart of the Matter” is the first book I read written by LaQuette, and I really enjoyed it. I would classify this as part police procedural, part romance.

I love Mac. This woman is a fierce, no-nonsense cop who cares about her fellow men and women in blue, her family, and her community. I don’t want to give anything away, but I will say she has a vulnerability — a wall that no one else can climb to get to her. The only person who seems to be able to is, Kenneth.

Unlike many romances, it wasn’t “instalove” for our couple, but Kenneth was able to “connect” with Mac in a way no one else is able to, and she trusted him enough to allow it. It’s like her soul recognized his before her mind had the time to catch up.

The plot of the story was well-developed as were the characters. I especially loved reading the thoughts in Mac’s head, she had me laughing out loud on more than once. The love scenes were very sensual and erotic. There’s one in particular… wheew! Let’s just say that Mac knows how to show her man who’s boss and who he belongs to. LOL! ;)

“Heart of the Matter” was a great read, I look forward to reading the rest of the series. :)

Very good read

For starters I'd like to say that the length of the book was great. Next the character development was great too! The bond that the hero and heroine formed with one another was really great. It's as close to a real relationship a book can get. Everything was mapped out perfectly, when certain events happened, the plot becomes more in sync and everything starts to make sense. Such as Heart's fear of touch. The book explains the event that led to her going 14 years without touch. I did love Heart's strong character, I just didn't like how manly she seemed. She already works in a male dominated career, she shouldn't be as manly as she was in the book. She was also very stiff and boring. Until Kenneth. When it came to Kenneth she seemed insecure, which to me is a contradiction to her strong persona. That annoyed me to no end. I love how Kenneth had his alpha male moments. Which is needed, when dealing with Heart. It's very sexy. He genuinely cared about her and was always honest with her. A true man. He always did what he thought was best for her. She's already a handful. Their emotional connection was very powerful, which made me like him even more. Even when she pushed him away. Ultimately it was a really great read. I wonder what's the next book about. However, there were some grammatical errors mainly left out words or words that didn't belong. Another thing are the names in the book. Heart, Law, Free, True Justice? Really. Ugh. I'm sorry they suck.

Wow what a surprise. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It had everything - action, drama, secrets and lies, deranged relatives, sassiness and funny at times. I happened to read this in the midst of waiting for new releases from my fav list of authors I normally read. I must add LaQuette the that list. She weaved a very powerful storyline. The coupling between Kenneth and Heart rivaled the pairing between Kennedy and Liam in Before Sunrise by Sienna Mynx. The storyline was so well crafted that I was fully engaged and entertained throughout the entire book.. The main characters dealing with a kidnapping and then blossoming into a romance between them was well told. Nothing in this book seemed to stall or rushed. The story flowed evenly from beginning to end. The storylines between the supporting cast was developed just as good. Oh my GOD Truth is simply truth, I love her character. Spoiler-- Best action scene in the book was Heart giving Faith the business and putting her through a glass table.

Wow!

I'm so mad at myself for having this book on my Kindle for months and I just finished it; this was an AMAZING story!

I ABSOLUTELY adore Heart and Kenneth; they are perfect for each other. They bonded emotionally first before they ever got physical and that was beautiful.

I'm sure I'll update this review later once I get my thoughts together so I'll just say, buy this book and read it now! Don't wait months to get engrossed in this tale of love, suspense, heartache and the best HEA ever!!!

Solid 4 stars! You know you're gonna enjoy a book when you've only read one 3rd of book 1 and already planing to buy the 2nd book/part of the series. This book have a very strong and independent kickass heroine, who is also the same time very vulnerable when it comes to her personal life. And the hero isn't intimidated by her high rank job and her strong character. (And also, an ir-book with over 300 pages!)
