Daniel Silva was born in Michigan in 1960 and raised in California where he received his BA from Fresno State. Silva began his writing career as a journalist for United Press International (UPI), traveling in the Middle East and covering the Iran-Iraq war, terrorism and political conflicts. From UPI he moved to CNN, where he eventually became executive producer of its Washington-based public policy programming. In 1994 he began work on his first novel, The Unlikely Spy, a surprise best seller that won critical acclaim. He turned to writing full time in 1997 and all of his books have been New York Times/national best sellers, translated into 25 languages and published across Europe and the world. He lives in Washington, D.C.
This three book collection is an exciting read and a wonderful way to continue working through Daniel Silva as series. I am consistently impressed with the detail that he gives to surroundings, every day objects or The way that he “paints a picture“ of the setting and the action. It’s truly delightful read, and extraordinarily well researched.
I thoroughly enjoyed all of these books; each had a good story; each had its own sad parts; and each had, as always, great comic relieves.
Portrait of a Spy struck me as showing the actual weaknesses we have in our intelligence community; it also painted a pretty sad, but true picture of what the people who saved us from the next 9/11 were facing during the Obama administration; the book also painted a very accurate portrait of Obama itself (0f course, Silva being Silva, in the end he made Obama half-decent, human, and faced with impossible choices); but overall it was right on the money.
The Fallen Angel (again, being a great story) also had a few things that pissed me off - Jesuits justifying social justice; Pope asking Muslims forgiveness for the Crusades (when in reality Muslims never apologized for centuries of bloody and relentless attacks on the Christian countries), and, most importantly -any justification for giving Arabs any kind of control over the Jewish land, ESPECIALLY The Temple Mount.
I think in that sense The English Girl was just enjoyable without left-wing nonsense to piss me off; together Gabriel and Christopher made a great pair (coin toss was a particularly nice touch); and Don Casabianca's goat is a simply a poetry in motion!
While Portrait of a Spy and Fallen Angel are both page turners, The English Girl bored me. The story is very slow and didn’t engage me until the team came together very late into the story. It ends very satisfactorily, however, and I was very happy about the presence of Christopher Keller. He is a wonderful character, and I hope we haven’t seen the last of him.
Silva's series of books featuring Gabriel Allon are the best things I've read since the reign of Tom Clancy in political thrillers. Great character development, wonderful plots, and written in away that all 13 of the books were page turners. I stumbled on them 3years ago at my public library after my retirement and have been a fan ever since.
All three books in this 3 book volume are great edge of your seat, free standing novels. They all contain well researched informative facts as background information to the fictional stories. They are biased to a minimum degree, but tend to present both sides of current issues at the time they were written.
I read this series one after the other as I recuperated from an illness, I love fast paced thrillers and this series is all that and more! I became invested in Gabriel Allon and his crew! I read each new one as it becomes available!
So well written, concise, and gripping. Sure there’s some formula, but each book stands by itself while incorporating prior knowledge about his very vivid characters.
I love this series and the 3 volumes in this collection were each excellent. I love the characters, the brilliant descriptions of the many locations, and the page turning plots.
In addition to fantastic story, insight to British politics and corruption in Russia. Great set of characters. Silva does good job of developing the plot. Highly credible
I've read hundreds of books along this plot line, (espionage and terrorism, not to mention thrillers in general) and I can honestly say that Silva is in a class of his own. His story development and banter is some of the best.
Very good characters and novel and somewhat conceivable plot. Quite intriguing and fun to read. I like all the books I’ve read in this series and plan on reading more.
Gabriel Allon - what a wonderfully complex, fascinating character! As expected, all 3 books were fabulous! Thank you, Daniel Silva, for your meticulous research into the areas of art, political intrigue, spy craft, etc. - it adds so many rich layers to your very entertaining stories!
It's a great way to enter my new year with the continued reading of this amazing series. I am so happy I came across this author he is mega good... so the story of Gabriel Allon continues awesome ..... going to get the next set... now... lol
I loved reading this book, the banter between Allon and Keller was priceless. Once again reading Daniel Silvas books was not disappointing. I will always be a fan. Hope to read more on Allon and Kellers wittiness
