Every time Cinnamon Blade, crime fighter making up for a bad past, rescues the sweet and nerdy Soledad Castillo from bad guys, the two women's chemistry grows stronger. Now that she's finally asked Soledad out, sparks fly -- but is a normal date even possible in a city threatened by aliens and vampires on a regular basis?
High-heat f/f romance starring a bi Jewish superheroine!
Shira Glassman is a bisexual Jewish violinist passionately inspired by German and French opera and Agatha Christie novels.
She lives in north central Florida, where the alligators are mostly harmless because they're too lazy to be bothered.
A note on my reviewing style: I read lots of books, but writing reviews is work and I only really do them to endorse books that I enjoyed enough to signal boost. That's why my reviews are mostly positive. It's not that I like every book ever :P
This is a really sweet, funny and, in spite of all the silliness, sexy story. Great diversity in the characters (human and paranormal). I loved that it didn't take itself too seriously and still gave me strong enough characters to get invested in.
[Thanks for the recommendation Corrie. It's left me smiling]
Shira Glassman’s books are pure joy to read. I’m particularly fan of her f/f-bi works (she writes m/m, m/f and non-binary as well). Glassman’s stories are basically angst free, cute, imaginative, funny and very well written. Her small, novella sized works have an amazingly solid story line. You don’t feel cheated at the end.
Cinnamon Blade is a super hero with a criminal past who keeps running into (and rescuing) the lovely and dorky Soledad Castillo from the bad guys. And the more she and her damsel in distress meet, the more their attraction grows. She would love to date the bookish beauty, but will the constant threat of vampires and aliens leave any room for sweet romance?
Cinnamon Blade: Knife in Shining Armor is - unlike former novellas Knit One, Girl Two and Fearless - peppered with hot sexy-times. I truly recommend you take a look at this author’s back catalogue (if you haven’t already) and try them out.
f/f explicit
Themes: a jewish super hero, OMG(!) Soledad is just the cutest aquamarine-loving little nerdy-poo on the planet, she even has crossword puzzle blankets, Connect-the-Dots must be the most original super hero I’ve ever come across.
Ahhh this was such a brilliant little novella. I don’t think Cinnamon Blade is a character I’ll be forgetting anytime soon.
Also the romance between Cinnamon & Soledad was adorable and my f/f loving heart is just bursting with joy. It was so nice to read something both entertaining( poor Cinnamon just can’t get away from the vampires and aliens) and fluffy.
Overall I adored it. Another Shira Glassman Novella to add to my favorites.
At less than two dollars, Cinnamon Blade delivers an excellent dollars-for-fun ratio. It’s also a fabulous choice for someone looking for more diversity in their romance featuring women who love other women, since Blade is Jewish and bisexual, and Soledad is Costa Rican and not sure whether she’s a lesbian or bi. If you’re looking for a quick, sexy, super fun read to get away from the world, you can’t go wrong with this one. I highly recommend it and can’t wait to see what Shira Glassman has in store for us next.
Eh. This felt more like erotica than any real story. I guess I was just expecting something different from the blurb.
The couple are almost already established when we get into it, we drop in just in time for first sexy times - which I just personally found lacking and not particularly hot. I felt no real connection here, and missed the 'getting to know you' parts.
It also has that quippy 'on' humour you all know I struggle with. Not for me.
This is a really adorable (and steamy) f/f romance for adults starring an ex-con superheroine and the wonderfully nerdy woman she keeps on rescuing. Perfect for anyone who loves Tansy Rayner Roberts's superhero/heroine stories!
Cinnamon Blade is an entertaining and amusing romp. And if you're looking for diverse representation, look right here.
Bisexual Jewish superheroine Cinnamon Blade (and how much did I love that the author actually refers to her as Cinnamon Blade? A lot) fights bad guys. That's what superheroines do, after all. Of course, she also rescues good girls like sexy nerd Soledad. The two balance a budding relationship with Blade's duties of kicking butt, taking names, and saving the world.
Short stories have their limitations, and effective world-building is one of them. As a result, I found the story, which is heavily driven by dialogue and action, occasionally confusing and disjointed. But overall it was fun, steamy, and unique, and an enjoyable way to spend an hour.
Read for SBTB January - March 2019 Quarterly Challenge: A novella or book under 100 pages.
This was such a short, sweet, fluffy and fun f/f superhero novella. There was so much chemistry between Cinammon Blade and Soledad and their sex scenes were definitely steamy. I was a little confused at the start because the writing was a little disjointed. I also feel that the worldbuilding could've been a little better. But overall this was super fun and I'll be happy to recommend!
A fun, queer, fantasy romance! The opening may be disorientating to some but worked just fine for me. Much like Talia Hibbert's Mating the Huntress I'm impressed at the worldbuilding that's covered in the lower page count. I love the way Judaism informs how the two Jewish superheroes move through the world, and there's other rep as well including Latinx, bi, and questioning (sexuality). Consent is rock solid, too.
I'm sad that this is a standalone because I would love to watch Cinnamon and friends go on some more adventures while finding love.
"High-heat f/f romance" is RIGHT okay. It would probably help to not read this in the subway like I did lol.
Overall, I loved the fluff between Cinnamon Blade and Soledad Castillo and the superhero bits so much. They certainly had great chemistry and great build up, but I do wish we could've seen some pining in the beginning. We got thrown in to all this history between these lovely girls but it was more told to us than shown.
This is the second book I’ve read by the author and I enjoyed this one just as much as the first. This story was short, sweet, funny and steamy. That’s a lot to pack into such a short tale, but the author managed it while also providing well-fleshed characters. I loved Soledad, I could relate to her brand of nerddom well. I also loved Cinnamon’s confidence and humor. I thought that Dot’s skill-set was fascinating and unique and, overall, I just really enjoyed how much the author managed to pack in. The only nitpick/complaint I have—ad I hesitate to even call it that—is how late we discover Cinnamon’s hair color. Now, it could be something made clear on the cover and being blind I missed that. But I remember being taken out of the story—just briefly—to think: huh, was that mentioned before? I guess her name now makes sense. As I said, barely registers as a complaint since I was sucked right back into the author’s humor and fun imagery.
This was so cute and good and made me all bubbly inside... ahhh!!
Okay, so. I know the blurb literally warns you it's "High-heat f/f romance" but my standards for "smut I'm willing to read" are so low that I did feel a little like a shocked and scandalized old lady going "oh my!" sometimes. But it was ok and people whose default isn't "avert your eyes and skip the sex" will not have my problems.
Also, funny? Literally hilarious? Original? Creative? Cute? Romantic? Cinnamon Blade is such a badass snarker, Soledad is soooooo nerdy and cute, and the little glimpses we get of the superhero team hint that Shira Glassman could write a really great superhero book focused on them if she wanted to.
The Jewish representation is so funny and accurate, and there's some talking about Soledad not being sure of her labels even though she knows she likes women, and they're both so good for each other and so considerate. So many good things in such a quick steamy novella with action and humor.
Adventurous romance novella about ex-thief now-crime-fighter Jewish bisexual woman, who finally started dating nerdy Costa-Rican environment-protector office lady, sounds great, right? And it’s great!!!
I loved Cinnamon Blade: Knife in Shining Armor! It’s absolutely delightful, gripping and entertains story. The romance is amazing, the sex scenes are so well-written, they are great. The main characters Blade and Soledad have chemistry of the charts. I loved their interactions. The sapphic content we deserve!
Also alien invasions, vampires, group of crime-fighters led by Jewish werewolf.
The cast is diverse and intersectional. Cinnamon Blade is bisexual Jewish woman, her love interest is Soledad, catholic Costa-Rican. She says she’s attracted to girls but doesn’t know about guys. She questions if she’s lesbian or bi or else. I love questioning rep and I love that Blade and Soledad talked about it on page. Also minor characters include Jewish man, black queer man etc.
A steamy and seriously sweet superhero story starring former-cat-burglar-now-crimefighter Cinnamon Blade and her nerdy damsel Soledad Castillo. Those names will be recognizable for anyone who read Shira Glassman's previous f/f novella Knit One, Girl Two, and it was really a delight to get a glimpse into Blade and Soledad's world of aliens and vampires. Readers need not be familiar with KOGT to enjoy Blade's heroic hijinks, Soledad's penchant for crossword puzzles and trivia, and this brief but substantial and heartfelt romance.
There's a lot to like about Cinnamon Blade: Cinnamon Blade herself is a cat burglar turned superhero who also happens to be Jewish and bisexual, and her background -- and that of her more religiously observant best friend -- are baked into the story in little ways. Her relationship with Soledad, a woman she has ended up rescuing again and again, is passionate and at the same time dorky and cute.
Unfortunately, I think maybe I just don't quite get on with Shira Glassman's writing, which just doesn't do much for me... and I definitely didn't work well with the jump-start the romance got, heading straight off into mildly kinky (public) sex and more or less staying there, with superhero interludes. I wanted more of the other stuff -- Blade's relationship with the team, for instance, because the little we got to see of Captain Werewolf (the aforementioned more religiously observant best friend) was pretty cool.
It has its moments, and it wasn't a bad way to beguile a half hour, but not quite my thing either.
Okay I really, really underestimated the heat level for this one. I know I have a low tolerance for sex, but even I can read erotica if there's enough plot or character development. Alas 50% in and while the characters seem fun, either the were having sex or talking about having sex, I just couldn't connect with them at all. Which sucks because I love the premise. No rating because this is more on the 'it's not you, it's me' problem
I think I could have used a great big "EXPLICIT SEX CONTENT" sticker on the cover, 'cause nothing I've read by Ms Glassman in the past prepared me for this.
This was a fun and sexy superhero story. With aliens and vampires working against them Blade and Soledad still manage to start a relationship. I had a lot of fun reading this book. It has fight scenes and sex scenes whY more could you want. Great book
Very fun, funny, and racy superhero romance featuring characters the protagonists of "Knit One, Girl Two" were fans of. I liked that the story immerses you in its fictional world with virtually no exposition. Sizzling dialog, too.
I liked a lot of the nerdery and interactions between all the characters, but some of the world building felt confusing, like being shoved into the middle of the story and unable to access the beginning. The sex scenes are definitely steamy and the chemistry between Blade and Soledad is wonderful. Some great moments between Blade and Cpt Werewolf, though would have liked more of the friendships. Overall, would recommend for a short, steamy f/f superhero story.
Content notes:
- on page sex, including oral, manual, strap-on penetration, sex in a public place - violence, superhero-ing, injuries, hospitalization - references to past as a thief - Jewish religion and spirituality, especially central to one of the side characters - man hitting on LI, takes rejection relatively well, mentions history of guy hitting on her tho
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
- the Judaism, and especially the way it's worked into speculative aspects of the story! ugh the fact that the werewolf character had created a blessing for his transformation, and that Glassman gives it to you in Hebrew as well... it was so so beautifully nerdy and amazing - open and direct communication around sex - Cinnamon Blade's relationship to her teammates felt layered and rich even within the short space of a novella - Soledad Castillo's wonderful nerdiness
I wasn't so much a fan of how the flirting and sex themselves were written, but the book was so much fun regardless!
Gotta love a good superhero story, especially when the hero isn't using supernatural powers. Add in a smoking hot f/f romance and some good humor and you're golden!
I was perusing for a nice, short f/f romance novella and I found it in Cinnamon Blade. Do I recommend it? Sure. It's a quick read to get into on the train commute home or when you're curled up in a blanket with a cup of tea.
Cinnamon Blade felt like the last slice of pie. Delicious as I devoured it, but the slice that I was fed didn't leave me feeling satisfied and full. Even though my 6-year old inner child is banging on the table, crying "please, ser, I want some more"... when I sit back and sip on my beverage, patting my tummy, I'm content with the slice of Blade's life that I got to read. Do I want more? Yup. Was I disappointed that it had ended so quickly? Uh, yeeeeah! I wanted to go on more adventures with Blade and the gang. I wanted to learn more about the paranormal world they lived in. ("Vampires in hot, sunny Florida??! Whuuuuut?!!") But, when all things are considered, I can't complain about what I was given.
The book leaps into the romance headfirst right from page one. So... no surprise spoiler there. And so, me, the lover of slow-burn romances, got whiplash from how quick the everything got started. It took me a day or two to get back into the book because I was in disbelief that a romance could start out like this. ("This isn't the romantic romance formula that I'm used to! What is going on?!") But after I shoved those feelings aside, I was hooked and I burned through the pages. The romance between Blade and Soledad was steamy and quuuh-ute~ I loooooved the scenes where Blade was on the mission to fulfill Soledad's fantasies. Blade is one of the most perfect lovers.
I haven't read any of Shira Glassman's other works, so I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading. But after reading Cinnamon Blade, I will check out some of her other books.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Yet again, Shira Glassman has succeeded in creating a world I want to be a part of and characters I'd love to be best friends with.
Her characters are so diverse and realistic and you can tell that she took care in creating each one. I especially love being able to see myself reflected in the Jewish characters, and I absolutely loved all of Soledad's language facts. And there are so many amusing lines, I found myself laughing out loud several times in the short amount of time it took me to read this.
Another thing Shira Glassman does so well is the way her characters act in socially conscious ways without it being preachy--I've read so many books where you can tell the author was trying to teach their readers about something "woke" and it comes off as a lecture, but that doesn't happen at all in this book. When Shira Glassman's characters practice good consent or talk about compulsory heterosexuality or demonstrate how to respect people from the same culture who practice in different ways, it doesn't feel like a lecture aimed at the readers, it feels completely natural. It comes off as a group of people who behave in these ways because it really is the right thing to do, not because they want to teach you a lesson about how to behave.
Plus, the book features a Hebrew blessing for turning into a werewolf. What could be better than that?
