The Device

Rate this book
When George d’Clare receives the diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease, he and his wife Madison organize a support group. This noble endeavor eventually leads them to meeting a strange man with an incredible story – a captivating tale about a device that could transport a person into the future and return them safely to the present. His far-fetched account also comes with an equally fantastic to help him in a daring plan to use the device to bring back the cure for the disease. Thinking the man suffers from dementia, George dismisses him as delusional.

But when the strange man is later killed in a deliberate hit-and-run, the couple embarks on a search for the truth about the device, beginning with the perfectly-handwritten diary he left behind. They soon discover that they are involved in a deadly cat-and-mouse chase through time, whose origin dates back to the final days of World War II, and to a highly-classified Nazi operation, codenamed “Firebird.”

Could there actually be a device capable of time travel? And if so, can George and Madison find it in time to stop the next phase of the inconceivable Firebird plan?

This book is a combination of Historical fiction and Science Fiction ... at least I hope so. Who knows one day time travel may be possible. This was a very interesting read beginning with WWII pretty much over and Hitler committing suicide which piqued my interest right away. I got caught up in the story and was on the edge of my reading chair at some points and crossing my fingers for a good ending. The whole story was amazing and I was not disappointed with the ending.

My Grade = 93% - A

Published 9/15/17. 567 pages

I ordered this book through Barnes and Noble after reading a review by a fellow Goodreads friend and was not disappointed.

Originally there were some items I was not thrilled with including level of writing and grammar, but the more I kept reading, the more it became an “I can’t put this book down.”

Premise, a day or so after Hitler’s suicide in his underground bunker in Berlin, an American soldier (with photographic memory) discovers several layers of floors of rooms under Hitler’s main apartments, and one major Nazi General missing.

The modern “present” of the story begins in August, 2014, and is narrated by George d’Clare, a man in his mid-50’s with the early stages of Parkinson’s Disease.

While trying to avoid spoilers of any kind, I can say that this is a science fiction novel, and The Device is a time machine. I am a major devotee of time travel (and time machine) stories, and this one is very unlike any other I have read before.

It really has everything! And just when i figured “the jig was up,” everything came at me from another angle and the story progressed, eventually to an extremely satisfying ending.

A really great book that I’d recommend very highly to time travel fans.

The Device has an interesting premise. I like science fiction and the device fits strongly into the field. How Dale C. George handles the paradox of time travel and the arrow of time was well done. Tying in military history and bring in the Third Reich brings in an antagonist that allows a definite opposition. At some points this reminded me of Iron Sky (link to movie on IMDb).

The structure of the chapters, internally and externally, along with the change from first to third person, make this a harder read. At times it was harder to follow the storyline and I had to make sure I was keeping plot points in order. Because of this, I’m not sure if I caught the foreshadowing that led to the resolution of the problem at the climax.

This is Dale C. George’s debut novel and there is a lot within in to provide a fun time travel adventure. I look forward to what he presents next.

Concept was good, story pacing was good, action was good, almost everything was good. Not great but good. I would have given this a solid 4 star except I found the main character (George) extremely annoying. I found the whole section where "the device" was explained, on what it is and how it works, extremely annoying. The author could have done this section better than having George interrupt the speaker every few sentence to ask him to explain simple basic concepts, like what Pi is. This section made George seem like a complete idiot or someone who grew up alone in the woods without any education. But he served in the army and was a airplane mechanic afterwards. He should have some basic understanding of technology. For this reason and others I found George to be annoying. Every else where George was not present, like all the flashbacks, were great.

The plot is clever, and the scientific basis just credible enough to hold attention. Unfortunately, the characters are disappointing. Classic stereotyped one dimensional people with dialog reminiscent of the Famous Five, and supposedly clever people behaving very stupidly.
It's a long read - or listen in my case - and I was tempted to give up. However, I was keen to see how the author had resolved the plot. The ending was well conceived.

Great story. Kept me wanting to turn the pages. I really loved the history and time travel aspect of the story.
