Former lawyer Nicole Fitzhenry-Dawes should be focusing on planning her wedding and a friend’s baby shower, as well as running her maple syrup farm.
Instead, her “former” profession won’t let her go.
Her maid of honor, Elise Scott, is suspended from her job as a Fair Haven police officer for investigating a case she shouldn’t have been anywhere near, endangering not only her career but also her relationship with a fellow officer. Nicole can’t believe Elise would have risked so much without a good reason.
Much more turns out to be at stake than Nicole realized, and to help Elise, she ends up defending a man she isn’t convinced is innocent.
And the deeper she goes into his case, the more she becomes a target of very dangerous people…
Tapped Out is the seventh book in Emily James' Maple Syrup Mysteries.
Our Attorney, turned Maple Sugar farmer, still acting as an attorney, is drafted into the past life of her new friend, Elise, as her ex-husband is accused of being a 'wife killer.'
Nikki is challenged when she meets the 'ex.' He is a horrible person and repels her basic feelings. However, Elise's kids don't deserve to have their father in jail for a crime, Nikki feels, he didn't commit.
This is a clever mystery in a totally clever series.
I thoroughly enjoyed Tapped Out. As we get closer to the end of this series it feels like ongoing mysteries are beginning to be wrapped up, while the characters are growing and moving forward. As much as it feels like the end for the series, there is a feeling of it also being the beginning of so much.
Once again Nikki is stepping out of her comfort zone. Although she, Mark, Toby & Velma are all back home, Nikki is once again taking on a challenging task that keeps her wondering where her career is heading.
I love this series. I have become attached to these stories. On the one hand, I can not wait to read the last two books. On the other, I hate to see it end. The wonderful thing about books, I can revisit this small tourist town whenever I want. It is like watching reruns of a cherished TV show or watching a classic movie again and again. I can start the series over, and over. These characters, the mysteries, and of course Toby and Velma are always here.

Another great read in the series. Really hadn't expected the solution but felt glad that it had happened that way. Loved the characters and the fact that she is getting more confident in herself. A phone call leads to her taking on a case of murder. The accused is said to have killed his wife. Did he? She has a hard time deciding if he is telling the truth or not. Plus there is the question of the possible move to DC and whether Stacey will take on more responsibility. The more she finds out the more questions are raised. Add in kidnapped dogs, affairs, family problems, identity fraud and attempted murder. Will the truth come out? Will she agree to go to DC?
Each time Emily James' puts out a new book in this series I don't know how she'll top the last one. But somehow she does, & this latest addition does not disappoint!! The action is intense & the romance sweet. Her characters are well developed & relatable. Nicole & Mark are people I would like as friends. There were several plot twists that tugged at my heartstrings, but I was very satisfied the way things turned out at the end.
I'm enjoying this series of clean, short mysteries. As well as the individual plots, it's interesting to watch Nicole figure out who she is as a person as opposed to living in her highly-successful parents' shadow. She can't seem to leave her lawyer self behind, and although she'll only work with innocent clients, this time although the guy's likely innocent, he's such a jerk that she'd rather let him go to jail. Except... she can't.
In this installment of the Maple Syrup Mystery series, Nicole agrees to represent Elise's ex-husband accused of murder. Whether or not he's telling the truth about his innocence, she's not sure, but she is sure that he's hiding something. A complicated case that kept me guessing to the very end.
I have been binge reading this series. Only have two more to go. What a fresh reading experience. Each book is so different from the last yet it has the same characters you have begun to feel like you know as friends. I am going to miss these people when I read the last book.
I have really enjoyed reading this series and had looked forward to reading the remaining books. But I was at 62% in this book when I ran across an unexpected curse word. So I have stopped reading this and deleted the remaining books in the series. Very sad and aggravating to spend so much time in a series and like it a lot and then have to have to end it.
This is an awesome book. There is a murder that Nicole is hired to represent who claims he is innocent. There are threats, and twisted happenings. Very well written and a pleasure to read.
Love, love these books. I have read them in order and have not wanted them end
I have to read other books that she wrote to see if they are as engaging as this series. Thank you for writing them, I cannot wait until the next one comes out. Shirley
This was my favourite, so far. Our heroine is doing what feels like some real work for real reasons. It was exciting without being melodramatic. I did not guess the ending. I am starting to enjoy the people in Fair Haven.
Another great story! The plot had just enough twists and turns to keep me guessing until the end. I love all the characters, both old and new. I can't wait to read the next book!
WOW!! The research Ms. James must've had to do for this seventh of her Maple Syrup Mysteries--unless she's secretly a criminal defense attorney!--is a bit mind-boggling to consider! It's suspenseful, masterfully plotted, and intellectually informative: My favorite qualities in a mystery! The more intense twists and turns in this one will leave you reeling. I'm really going to hate to read the last book in the series, which she says will be #9; I hope she won't quite close the door on the possibility of coming back and writing a few more in the future!
This is #7 of the Maple Syrup Mysteries by Emily James, and just as delicious as the first six stories. I love the strong plot lines, interesting characters and down-home settings. Nicole Fitzhenry-Dawes runs the maple syrup farm she inherited from her uncle, but she is also often called upon to use her career skills as a lawyer when her friends need her help.
A very entertaining and clean-content cozy mystery.
