As a special class of earthbound guardian angel called Memitim, Hawkyn is charged with protecting those whose lives are woven into the fabric of the future. His success is legendary, so when he’s given a serial killer to watch over, he sees no reason for that to change. But Hawkyn’s own future is jeopardized after he breaks the rules and rescues a beautiful woman from the killer’s clutches, setting off an explosive, demonic game of cat and mouse that pits brother against brother and that won’t end until someone dies.

Aurora Mercer is the half-wytch lone survivor of a psychopath who gets off on the sadistic torture of his victims. A psychopath whose obsessive psyche won’t let him move on until he kills her. Now she’s marked for death, her fate tied to that of a murderer…and to a sexy angel who makes her blood burn with desire…

Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series.

Hawkyn and Aurora

"Are you my guardian angel?"
"Long story, but no."

Another book from the Demonica Underworld which is awesome! And I have no words to describe to ýou how much I have really missed this world. If I don't get my yearly fix, I get depressed...

This book is another trip at the world of Memitim, i.e. the children of Azagoth and various angels. There are so many children, half brothers and sisters that they can create a small army. Earthbound creatures, not allowed to enter heaven because they are not entirely innocent and heavenly (let's not forget that their dad is the boss of the demons' hell); Memitims have one and only job: to protect VIP humans or in other words humans that are too important to die because their life and death will influence the future of humanity, the Primori.
The problem is that not all these humans are nice. They can be evil. They can be rapists, serial killers, murderers, torturers, unable to feel emotions, disgusting human beings. And still the Memitims have to pretend that don't care and they still need to protect them.

Hawkyn has the same problem. He hates the guy that he has to protect, his Primori. That human is a serial killer. He likes capturing supernatural females, torturing and horribly killing them. His last victim is Aurora. Hawkyn for his own reasons does not want to see this unknown female hurt. So, he interrupts the abduction and later on he saves Aurora.
So, one of the things that we can read about in the book is Hawkyn's internal turmoil whether he should do his duty or should listen to his heart.

Aurora is a wytch. Her species come from sex demons and witches. But Aurora prefers being a human, so she ignores anything supernatural and she does not uses her powers much. Only for healing. That's the reason, she is the best masseuse. When she meets Hawkyn, her reality will crash down and the supernatural world will become her new reality.

Although this book tells the love story between Hawkyn and Aurora, it also probes the world of Memitims. We can see the relationship between the numerous half siblings and their relationship with their very scary but fair father.

Azagoth has learned for the first time in his perpetual life how to feel and care. And he does not really like it. He is confused and uncertain for his future and his priorities. Before the book finishes, he will gain something that he really needs, but he will also lose someone that he cannot afford to lose.

I am so happy that we also revisited the Underground General Hospital and we learned news about our favourite characters from Demonica and Lords of Deliverance characters.

This book can be a standalone, but if you want to read the next book in the series Her Guardian Angel; you will need to read "Hawkyn" first!

At this moment, he seemed to be both angel and demon, because what he was doing to her was nothing short of evil, but he was so damned good at it.

It's no secret that I'm obsessed with all things Larissa Ione writes. Having read her entire backlist, I don't think there's been one book of hers that I didn't thoroughly enjoy, and this one was no exception. While the story is set in her Demonica world, new readers wouldn't feel lost. There's plenty of background, the characters are not ones that have previously introduced, and while part of a series, it's a solid standalone as well. Though I'd still highly recommend the rest of the Demonica series because it's just that awesome. But I digress.

Hawkyn is a Memitim; a special breed of earthbound angel that was raised by humans. His father is the powerful ruler of the underworld, Azagoth. But that doesn't mean that he still doesn't need to earn his way into heaven by doing his job. His duty is to protect his Primori. Unfortunately for Hawkyn, his Primori happens to be a deranged serial killer and he can't interfere with destiny. That is, not until his accidental interference causes his Primori to abduct a woman that he can't stop thinking about.

Aurora Mercer is a wytch; a fascinating hybrid of witch and succubus. She doesn't know if she can trust the handsome angel that rescued her from the hands of a monster, but she doesn't have much of a choice when she's still hunted by the man determined to finish his job.

The chemistry between Aurora and Hawkyn is instant and sizzling, in only a way that Larissa Ione can write. But their relationship is a delicious slow burn that keeps you at the edge of your seat. I couldn't get enough of these two together. I love Ione's rich world building and all the characters that she's created. And while Hawkyn brings mention some of my past favorites, there's also some new faces that are introduced as well. I loved getting the additional development of Azagoth and Lili's story. If you haven't read their book, I can't recommend it enough: Azagoth.

As for this one? For a short novella, it was incredibly satisfying, well developed and perfectly paced. It offers plenty of action, with a dash of sizzle, and a total page turner from beginning to finish. If you're looking for a quick and sexy PNR read, you really can't go wrong!

I can’t even explain to you how excited I was to get the chance to read this story. I’ve had Larissa Ione’s Pleasure Unbound (Demonica #1) on my TBR for ages and jumped at the chance to sample her work. And what an amazing journey this was!

Hawkyn was amazing! He was refreshingly honest with his frustrations regarding his current assignment and the way that his job was structured. He knew that things needed to change and was determined to find a way to help enact them. His dissatisfaction with his current charge, a serial killer hunting women with supernatural powers, was heartfelt and I completely felt his pain. His fierce protection of Aurora certainly didn’t hurt. I absolutely loved his devotion to her and the many ways he defied his orders to keep her safe. He was over 600 years old, knew what it was to suffer, and grew up to be such an honorable man. Loved him!! Oh, and the author didn’t take the insta-love route with this story. These characters had such a slow build and I got to enjoy and savor the nuances of their relationship. This helped to make this story read more like a novel than a novella.

I also loved getting Azagoth’s and Lilliana’s POVs. I don’t know this man known as the Grim Reaper, but I can’t wait to learn more. About his life, his job, his love. I’ll definitely be reading this series from the start. I’m utterly fascinated by this world. The True Fallen, the Unfallen, the Angels, the Memitim, the Council, all of Hawykyn’s siblings, Hades, the Wytches, shifters and so much more. It’s a world I think everyone should get to know and know well!

Hawkyn is a Demonica Underworld novella and my first read by Larissa Ione. This author (and series) have been on my TBR for a while and I could not be more thrilled about discovering another great paranormal romance series to explore. Hawkyn is an earthbound guardian angel who has been given the job of protecting humans. He has no control over if they are evil or good. When the human he has been charged to watch over kidnaps a young (and quite sassy) woman, Hawkyn intervenes and the future is changed forever.

Overall, Hawkyn was a truly delicious novella that drew me in from the first page. Although there was an obvious history between the characters, I was not distracted in the least. I was not only able to engage completely with the story but I was also inspired to check out more from this author. Novellas are always a hard sell for me and yet, in this case, I am so happy that I was able to get this delicious sample of the Demonica Underworld. I am looking forward to more!

Another longish Novella this one is 125 pages, this is Hawkyn and Aurora's story.
Hawkyn is a Memitim the child of Azagoth and an angelic mother and his Primori/charge on earth is an evil serial killer.
A primori is an important being needed for future events to run there needed course and Memitim are there guardians.
Hawk breaks all the rules when he rescues Aurora from her fate at the hands of this killer.
He is hell-bent on protecting Aurora no matter the rules involved even squaring up to his father.
He also wants changes made for all Memitim as they are treated abysmally by the above powers.
Aurora is mostly human but she is also half wytch a natural wielder of magic but she lives like a human not embracing her heritage.
There was also a side-story going on here with Azagoth and a crisis with his new emerging emotions.
The poor guy is having difficulties processing his new feelings and it is having a knock-on effect with all his relationships including his beloved mate.
This was again a good read that I enjoyed that took some unexpecting turns.
The story arc is really starting to hot up and get interesting.
This really is such a great series and I have enjoyed every story yet.

It was with much excitement that I picked up this book and slipped effortlessly into the Demonica world once again. Specifically, into the Underworld, as we are introduced to Hawkyn, a type of guardian angel or “memitim”, and the son of Azagoth and brother to Idess. It’s fast paced and exciting, with a real heartfelt warmth to it, and of course a fun and sexy romance with a strong paranormal element that I love!

If you haven’t read this series, there is enough info given to get you through this one as a standalone, but you’ll definitely appreciate it more if you’ve read the earlier books.

As a memitim, Hawkyn is prescribed the duty of protecting certain beings whose life is somehow pivotal to existence. These people are not always good, because the world needs evil to bring about important change, just as much as it needs good, and one of the beings that Hawkyn is responsible for protecting at all costs just happens to be a psychopathic serial killer. And when he is summoned to protect him from imminent danger, he instead ends up saving his next victim, changing fate and risking everything that he has been working for.

Aurora is a new breed of supernatural for this series – a wytch. As the offspring of a human male witch and a succubus, she has unique powers, but exists more in the human world than the supernatural. So when she is rescued from excruciating torture and certain death by an angel, no less, she is thrust into a world that she thought only existed in legend.

This is a great story, and and freaking loved Hawkyn. Like all memitim, he does his job hoping that one day he will do enough to enable to him to ascend to heaven. But more than anything, he wants to get there so that he can effect change for his brothers and sisters, to make their lives better. He has a huge heart, and he’s both badass and completely relatable, and then along comes this woman who changes everything for him and suddenly his priorities begin to shift. HIs battle to understand his world and fight for something better is really gorgeous, and my heart broke for him as we see his confusion and pain over figuring out the lengths he is prepared to go to to do what he thinks is right. Tied into that are his growing feelings for Aurora, which are forbidden but overpowering, and while he fights to keep her safe and alive, he is breaking rules at every turn, leading to all sorts of excitement. And, of course as a romantic hero he is sweet, swoony and sexy as all hell.

Though there is an immediate attraction between Hawkyn and Aurora, the romance is a bit of a slow burn (relatively speaking for a novella), but when it happens… damn, it’s hot!

Aurora is strong and badass in her own way, and I really enjoyed her. I like that she’s something new in the Demonica world, and I love that she’s not a simpering victim, she more than holds her own, and I thought she was a great match for Hawkyn.

I loved this story. I loved being back in the Demonica Underworld and exploring yet another part of the memitim existence. I loved catching up with characters from the previous books – most notably Idess and the Underworld crew, and there’s a fantastic side-story featuring Azagoth and Lilliana with chapters from their POV and some pretty significant story development for the both of them. I’m really interested to see where that particular storyline is going to go!

As always, I loved the opportunity dive back into this world, and I loved this one!

4 stars.

I love this series and can't get enough of it. My favorite books are male driven stories. I think that's because I want to see how the other half lives and thinks. Of course since my guys are written by women I'm getting what I want from the males because it's kinda what the author wants too and we are on the same wavelength.

I'm okay with that. But I also find how men interact with other men fun to read about. This series is pact full of funny ass men. They cracked me up even with they are putting the hurt on someone. I know, I'm sick, but believe me when I say this, you have to read this series to understand.

Up this time is Hawkyn. Oh Hawkyn! He's really a great guy/kinda Angel. He really cares about his fellow Memitim's. He truly wants them all to live a better life and is sick and tired of following the rules while being treated badly. I agreed with him.

He does something that he should by helping out Aurora and I spent a good part of the book worried about them. Funny how involved you can get with a well written story. But I did worry, they were both being given a raw deal and I couldn't believe no one wanted to help them.

From the first page the story moves quickly. No time to get up and get yourself a snack, it's read, read, read! Not only do we have the story with Hawkyn and Aurora, but Azagoth and Lilliana are also in it. Of course Azagoth is Hawkyn's father so it makes sense that he's in it.

What doesn't make sense (in my mind at least) is the twist between Azagoth and Lilliana! OMG! You've got to read it to understand. I really want to say more but won't.

This tuned out to be a wonderful story and I'm so glad that I read it. If you're a paranormal fan make sure to pick this series up and read them totally from the beginning. The whole series works better that way.

Hawkyn is a memitim, a special kind of guardian angel who was raised by humans and whose sole purpose in life is to help protect primori, humans who have an important role to play in heaven's plans for humanity. His main goal in life is to do enough to earn his place in heaven so that he can have a role in improving the lives of his fellow memitim siblings and if that means protecting a serial killer until he can complete his destiny then no matter how distasteful he finds his duty he will do it to the best of his ability. That is until the day his charge targets Aurora and Hawkyn finds himself compelled to step in and save her. Now Aurora has a target on her back and Hawkyn is torn between duty and desire and forced to make an impossible choice.

I've been a huge fan of Larissa Ione's Demonica series for years now and although you don't have to read the entire series to enjoy the Demonica Underworld books I'd highly recommend them all. No-one creates demons quite like Larissa does and I love the way she blurs the lines so her demons aren't always quite as bad as you'd think they should be and the good guys aren't perfect either. She has a knack for building a great connection, both emotionally and physically, between her characters in a short space of time too so even with her novellas I never find her relationships are rushed or unbelievable.

Hawkyn and Aurora are a great match, he is driven by duty and wants to make life better for his memitim siblings but at the same time he is fighting an overwhelming need to keep Aurora safe. Aurora is a wytch - kind of like a cross between a witch and a succubus - and quite a powerful one at that. She's spent her life trying to be independent from her family and forge her own path but she never expected to attract the attention of a serial killer. She's a fighter though and no matter what life throws at her she does her best to roll with the punches and protect herself. Aurora and Hawkyn fit together really well and I enjoyed getting to know them both. We also get to spend some time in Azagoth's realm and see just how certain changes have been affecting Azagoth and Liliana since their book which I found really interesting. This series is one I'll never tire of, I love diving back into a familiar world, meeting exciting new character but also catching glimpses of old favourites and I'm already looking forward to Her Guardian Angel which luckily releases next month!

Ok, so before I start this review I have to let you guys know that this series (and author) are near and dear to my heart.  Now, you may think that will color my review but I can assure you that if this latest installment wasn't as amazing as I was hoping it would be, I just wouldn't way anything about it.  But, that was SO not the case.  Hawkyn was everything I knew it would be and a bag of chips. Yup, it was that good.

Here's the thing about Larissa Ione's writing, her world building, her characters, her storylines are second to none.  With this newest release I was brought right back into why I fell in love with this series all those years ago.  Hawkyn is a delicious alpha male with a heart of gold and a sense of duty that had me swooning like a love-sick teenager.  Aurora is a gal I would love to hang out with and has a strong personality with a wit about her I loved.  She's thrown into this new world and reacts EXACTLY like we all would, asking the kind of questions we would (like, "can I see your wings?") and her inner monologue had me chuckling out loud.

I was SO pulling for these two to somehow beat the incredible odds stacked against them from the very beginning. I won't ruin anything for you but if you know Larissa's writing, you know there's always a way ;-)

I also have to say that I was thrilled to get more of Azagoth!  Although now I'm a nervous wreck for him and Lilliana.  Yep, I just totally left you with a cliffhanger there...

Reading this novella was like coming home and it totally gave me the urge to re read the entire series, which I'll be starting as soon as I finish typing this!

Whether you're already a fan of Ms. Ione or this is your first taste, I know you'll love Hawkyn as much as I did!

As always, PERFECTION!! Larissa Ione takes us back to her Demonica world and it's like we never left. For a short story this packs a punch. It had all the elements I love about this world. I would so love to see a new full series set in this world! I hope it's in the cards, but for now making do with these 1001 Dark Nights novellas is really not so bad, not bad at all.

I received this book for free from Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I always get excited when a new book set in the Demonica world comes out.  And yes, I admit, a little part of me is disappointed that it isn't a full length novel and instead is a novella.  What can I say, I'm greedy?  But the Demonica World series of novellas is a great way to stay in touch with the world I love in the hopes for more to come.

HAWKYN is a bit different than the last installment.  I have to say I didn't enjoy it as much as the last but it's still a solid addition to the series.  Hawkyn is kind of a bad boy fallen angel.  He's assigned to watch over a serial killer and all his control is tested when he chooses to interfere with the earth realm and save a woman from becoming his serial killer's next victim.

I enjoyed the premise of this story and the plot.  There was, surprisingly, a lot of heaven and hell politics involved in this and I liked that a lot.  Hawkyn has his own issues with his job and wants to make a change in the rules.  And then there's of course the looming threat of the serial killer on the loose.  I also found it so interesting that there are angels in charge of watching over these terrible people!

Ultimately, what I couldn't connect with as much was the romantic connection.  I got the attraction but I don't know if I ever bought into the actual romance.  That was the only thing stopping me from giving this a higher rating.

However, this is a solid entertaining read and a quick one at that.  We get to visit UGH and it seriously gives me withdrawals and makes me want to re-read.  As much as I enjoy the Underworld mini series, nothing can compare to the epicness of the real series.

Larissa Ione is one of my favorite authors. I'm always eager to gobble up one of her books. She's been writing these novellas of the Demonica Underworld for awhile now. I don't know if we are going to get all of Azagoth's children (that would be A LOT) but I guess we're getting some key ones.

I liked the book and it took an interesting turn in the end.

I will say I was surprised that

Hawkyn is a special earth-bound angel known as a Memitim, and his job is to protect his Primori: humans, who for whatever reason, are destined to make an impact on all humankind. Hawkyn has lived centuries under the strict heavenly rules, waiting for the day he can ascend and sit on the Memitim Council so he can make changes to their archaic ways. But when he steps in to protect Aurora from his serial killer Primori, Hawkyn begins to stray from the path.

Aurora is a Wytch; the fabled species that is a mix of human witch and incubus. She’s chosen to live a human life, keeping her powers under wraps and not fulfilling her warrior destiny. But when she’s attacked and taken by a mad monster, Aurora’s eyes are open to a world she had only heard about.

Hawkyn is another 1,001 Dark Nights novella set in Ms. Ione’s Demonica world. While the romance is standalone, I feel that previous knowledge of the world would be useful when reading the story due to the large number of characters and types of beings that inhabit the world. For example, there is a significant side-story involving Azagoth, the father of all Memitim, and his mate, Lilliana, which takes up a bit of the book and isn’t resolved by the end.

While the author does a solid job of building the story and conflict around Hawkyn and Aurora, I feel that the romance aspect is lacking. There is much build up around why Aurora is kidnapped, what to do to save her, and how to change the Memitim, which is all interesting and mostly entertaining, but leaves little room for actual romance (and I don’t mean just sex). The pair spends little time really getting to know one another, and there aren’t any romantic overtures until well after the 50% mark of the book.

In the end, Hawkyn was an interesting story, but the romance fell flat for me. There wasn't much build up or chemistry. Ms. Ione is making a lot of changes in her Demonica World with these novellas, which is cool and all, but the novellas lack the richness of the full-length story. I love the world, but I need more.

My Rating: C+ Liked It, but I had issues

I find myself liking Hawkyn more than its predecessor, Razr, so hence the rating. In term of story, character development and insta-lust trope (can't do without insta-lust, that's not how it works :P), this novella is better written. It's like Ione take her time while tell the story about Hawkyn and his lady love, Aurora. I like that even this novella is about Hawkyn, the plot is pretty much complex like Ione's Demonica full length novel. After elf, Ione now introduced wytch. Not witch with "I", but "Y" *snort, yeah I know*. Meaning, that this kind is not your usual witch. I also like that while Aurora is a wytch and she said that actually she come into a warrior line or something, she work as a masseuse, yet she far from damsel in distress. I mean, what happen to her (torture and alike) is already horrible, yet she manage to survive.

I like Hawkyn's personality, even though he can be too overbearing as seen in the Suzanne's story, but he actually a good person that want the best for his Memitim's brother and sister. Some warning though, if you have some "daddy issues" of yourself *and no, it's not a joke*, this book have plenty, with Hawkyn and apparently Azagoth. Its surprised me to see Azagoth have an integral part in this novella, and also even he got his happy ending with Lilliana, not everything is gold and roses. I like that Ione still infused some "real life" problem, especially with a married couple (nah, there's no wedding scene. But its safe to assume Azagoth and Lilliana is married). Like, hey...yeah you can get the girl (or guy), but problems will still arise here and there. Consider Azagoth is the embodiment of brooding hero with a full scale of "brood" (and have anger management issues), also he somehow feel guilty for abandoning his Memitim children, both Azagoth and Lilliana have plenty problems of their own. What happen in the end for them almost break my heart, tho.

Anyway, Hawkyn didn't left out, tho. Beside his romantic relationship, I like his bromance with Cipher, an angel that had fallen from grace but not become fallen angel yet, and with his Memitim brother. I also like despite the insta-lust, not like Razr-Jedda relationship that work too fast, Hawkyn took his time with Aurora. I can totally feel the romance (and the steaminess is a bonus). What surprised me is...Hawkyn's biological mother, turn out to be an okay-ish person (or angel). I expect to meet another evil mother or a mother that didn't care at all for her children. Yet, Ulnara is something else.

Another good installment of Demonica world, and I believe some plot regarding Azagoth is to move his and Lilliana's story forward. Hawkyn is a must read if you a Demonica fans (also..Jim Bob. I got curious and curiouser regarding his real identity!)

5 wytchy and angelic stars for HAWKYN!

When earthbound guardian angel Hawkyn saves the life of half-Wytch (with a Y) Aurora Mercer after she's abducted by the serial killer he's meant to watch over, he inadvertently sets off a battle that will no doubt end in death. Hawkyn is distraught over whether he interfered with his charge's destiny, determined to both keep the killer and the woman safe. For hundreds of years, Hawkyn has wanted nothing more than to become an ascending angel and earn a spot on the council, but when his own path goes off course, he must decide whether to go against his brothers and sisters or protect the woman who's cast a spell over his heart.

HAWKYN is a novella in the Demonica Underworld series, and also a stand-alone addition to the innovative and fun 1001 Dark Nights series featuring sensual and erotic stories by a variety of popular authors inspired by the classic The Arabian Nights tale.

For whatever reason, as someone who doesn't typically care for paranormal reads, I seriously enjoy Ms. Ione's Demonica Underworld series. HAWKYN was an interesting read, the world she's created is weird and wild and fascinating. I love that good isn't always good and evil isn't always evil and that there are hundreds of shades of gray within her world. Hawkyn had a tough job trying to reconcile keeping a seriously demented serial killer safe yet determined to protect one of his would-be victims too. I liked Aurora's determination and burgeoning awareness of her own abilities. This was a terrific book from a series that I adore!

Bottom Line: No OM/OW or sharing; no condom use; no BDSM/kink; no sexual assault; loads of otherworldly violence/murder.

All of the Demonica novellas so far can be read as standalones. But Hawkyn can't be read as a standalone. Half of this novella is about Hawkyn and Aurora. The other half is dedicated to Azagoth and Lilliana.

Hawkyn is a Memitim angel who's assigned to protect a serial killer whose life is important for the future of humankind. But when Hawkyn breaks the rules and rescues Aurora, one of the serial killer's victims, a life-changing set of events is triggered.

At least 50% of this novella is about Azagoth going through a crisis, which provides us with a deeper insight into Azagoth's relationship with Lilliana and the complicated politics of Sheoul-gra. We also get an interesting glimpse into the lives of Memitim and their rocky relationship with Azagoth. I personally really enjoyed this part of the story because I love Azagoth. He's still adapting to the changes in his life and I just love reading about him.

That being said, because Azagoth was such a prominent part of this novella, it meant that less time was spent on Hawkyn and Aurora's romance. This unfortunately led to a weak relationship development between Hawkyn and Aurora. We get to learn about Wytches, but there was definitely something missing in the romance. The relationship between Hawkyn and Aurora didn't feel 100% satisfying to me. The author really should have written a longer story in this case.

Hawkyn and Aurora find their HEA, but Lilliana and Azagoth still have things left to talk about. I'm not sure why the author made this choice...but I guess I'll have to continue the series to find out.

Larissa Ione is one of the greatest Paranormal romance authors and I love her Demonica underworld series and every storyline that comes out of it.

The story of Hawkyn was a great read, getting to know another one of the Grim reapers kids always fascinates me, the way Larissa develops these characters is crazy, you end up being so invested in their storyline and you then find it hard to put the book down.

I appreciate how Larissa keeps these characters interesting and makes you want to know more about every character that is introduced throughout the story.

Hawkyn and Aurora's story was cute, funny, entertaining, and suspenseful, to think that every action that a memitim take could alter the future is always interesting concept. Who will win good or bad? who has a purpose in the future? who will be on the side of good during the epic war? All this plays over and over in the demonica series and I can not wait to see how many of the grim reaper's kids will we see fighting on the side of good.

Learning about the powers of Aurora and her brand of Wytches was interesting and all of the crazy things that happen between her and Hawykn made me miss the chaos that takes place in the underworld.

I look forward to the other stories about the grim reaper and his kids and hopefully we will see what the future holds for them.

There were moments I thought Hawkyn was a bit childish for his 6 centuries of age LOL but, overall, this was a very good novella and it had some emotive moments, especially relating to Azagoth. From what I know about the Underworld series, this is the most important novella, so far for what's to come.

A novella that is fifth in the Demonica Underworld, a continuation of the Demonica Universe (#15) dark paranormal romance. (It’s also #77 in 1001 Dark Nights.) This Underworld revolves around Azagoth, the Grim Reaper and lord of Sheoul-gra. The couple focus is on Hawkyn and Aurora Mercer.

My Take
Sweet in such a demonic way, lol. For it's all about Home and Love. It's also been a series arc with Azagoth at its center.

Jeez, the Memitim have it really rough! Their childhoods were nightmares. And each one of the Memitim hate their father for abandoning them, which makes it all the harder to understand why he's trying to get to know them now. Ooh, another character arc!

Ione is using third person dual protagonist point-of-view from Aurora's and Hawkyn's perspectives, which gives us an up close and personal insight into their issues.

Yep, Hawkyn has a major conflict. He's supposed to be protecting that psychopath, Drayger, who intends to torture and kill Aurora. He also intends to change those lame rules the Memitim Council loves to inflict on everyone.

Wow, "Hawkyn" is full of so much action that goes topsy-turvy. As for characters . . . Ione's depiction of demons and angels will make your head spin.

Ick. "Real changes comes from tragedy. It's how humans grow." Hmm, I do NOT like this rule.

Whoa, that last bit!! And here Azagoth was getting to know love.

The Story
A woman fights back in an attempted assault — and hits Hawkyn as well. Not that he takes it amiss. Nope. What it does do is stimulate his curiosity.

And remember, curiosity killed the cat . . .

The Characters
Aurora Mercer, a masseuse and a Wytch, is sensitive to life force energy, and her magic has one heck of a kick. Hmmm, her ancestors were sex demons. Her brother is a Navy SEAL. Jenna is Aurora's boss in Portland.

Hawkyn is a Memitim, one of Azagoth's sons. He's also a Guardian Angel with mad computer skills and an awesome trainer. Some of his protectees included Leonard Nimoy. Reynaud is Hawkyn's brother, who had been Shatner's Guardian Angel. Linsef had been Michelle Nichols'. Suzanne is their sister; she's the cook in Sheoul-gra. Their sister Nephritt lost her first primori due to glitches.

Declan is Suzanne's first primori; he works at McKay-Taggart for the restaurant owner's brother.

Sheoul-gra is . . .
. . . an underworld realm, a holding tank for the souls of dead demons and evil humans, ruled by Azagoth, a.k.a. the Grim Reaper. who’s married to Lilliana ("Azagoth", 1 (DU), 11 (Dem)). Zhubaal is Azagoth's Fallen angel assistant ("Z" 3 (DU), 14 (Dem)). The mohawk-wearing Hades, Azagoth’s second-in-command and the designated Jailor of the Dead, is mated to Cat ( Hades , 2 (DU), 13 (Dem), 6.5 (LoD)). Razr (he's mated to Jedda Brighton, a gem elf ("Razr", 4 (DU), 15 (Dem)) is training Azagoth's army. Cipher is an Unfallen angel. Darien is Hawkyn's half-brother and Sheoul-gras' resident healer. Other Memitim include Llewellyn; Gladys; Journey; the cocky Maddox; Emerico, who's something of a con artist; Rico; Atticus, who's obsessed with keeping notes and finding Lexi; Eva; Drue; and, Reza.

Methicore, Hawkyn's brother, is a jerk of a Memitim ("Azagoth", 1 (DU), 11 (Dem)).

The Memitim Council is . . .
. . . made up of Ascended Memitim, and they hate Azagoth. Jacob, Hawkyn's slacker of a half-brother, is a Memitim who Ascended almost a century ago. Ulnara is a member . . . and Hawkyn's mother! There have been some changes about who can create Memitim! And it's not good. The insanely formal and obtuse Demetrius, an Ascended Memitim, is a son of Luscindia. Leonas and Moze, Hawkyn's full brothers, are Punishers.

Heaven
"Jim Bob" is Azagoth's Heavenly spy. Mariella, an angel, has been Heaven's primary liaison with Azagoth for three centuries.

Underworld General Hospital (UGH) is . . .
. . . a demon hospital founded by three Seminus brothers: Dr Eidolon ( Pleasure Unbound , 1), Shade, and Wraith ( Passion Unleashed , 3). Idess', Hawkyn's full sister and married to Lore ( Ecstasy Unveiled , 4 (Dem)), job is to escort human souls to Heaven. Mace is their son. Blaspheme, an angel, is a doctor. Dr Gemella "Gem" Morgan. Shanea is a nurse. Runa is a werewolf and Shade's mate ( Desire Unchained , 2).

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse
Thanatos, Death, is mated to Regan (an ex-demon slayer) who's pregnant with their second child ( Lethal Rider , 3 (LoD), 8 (Dem)).

The Aegis is . . .
. . . an organization that hunts demons. Aegis slayers are also known as Guardians. A lot of cops are secret members.

The Demonic Activity Response Team (DART) is . . .
. . . a growing organization of defectors from The Aegis. One of its founders is Jake Biemer.

Jason Drayger, Hawkyn's primori and a psychopath, has murdered 46 women. Women who were demons, shapeshifters, and human witches. Drayer works as a database developer. Ben is his brother.

A True Fallen angel is one who was kicked out of Heaven and entered Sheoul. An Unfallen one has been kicked out of Heaven but not entered Sheoul. Memitim are Azagoth's children, now sworn to celibacy. Gene Roddenberry wrote Star Trek. A heraldi is a mark on a Memitim that signals their primori , a human whose existence will change the fabric of the Universe, is in danger. Wytches were created by a Charnel Apostle who bred male human witches with succubi. Wytches are not entirely human and use their thoughts or single commands to use their magic. Horror-maws are demon sharks. Bludgolems are like a virus, and they inhabit hosts.

Wendy is a barista at Hot Beans in Portland.

The Cover and Title
The cover has a black background overlaid with filigree diamonds and stars, in turquoise and orange, respectively. The upper two-thirds has the novella series name in the turquoise with Hades facing us with his chiseled abs and his shadow wings of holey black raised to the sides to their full in the first "0". In the second "0", is a blond castle. In the upper third is the title in gold and the series info immediately below it, also in gold. The author's name is at the bottom in orange with the middle "i" surrounded by the demon caduceus.

The title is the hero protagonist, "Hawkyn".

Buonasera lettrici!

A presto.

As always excellent world building and great chemistry between the leads Hawkyn and Aurora. New paranormal beings are always introduced in the series and this is no exception. The world is set in the Demonica Underworld and Hawk is one of the memitim, the angel hybrid offsprings of Azagoth and his current assignment is to protect a serial killer. This leads him to Aurora, a victim of said serial killer. So breaking all rules he decides to save her and bears the consequence. Aurora on the other hand, has basically turned away from her own family's paranormal heritage. But when a serial killer gets ahold of her and she's rescued by an angel, she's pretty much sure she can't turn away from it anymore. Hawkyn will lead readers on a merry chase of adventure, hot sex and paranormal suspense that would keep you turning at the last page. Although it can be read as a standalone, the first book in the Demonica Underworld, Azagoth should be read at least to make sense of the other over arching plot in the book.

I ripped right through this story and finished it in pretty much one sitting. Hawkyn and Aurora make a great couple, and once again Larissa Ione manages to pack a lot of story into a novella. There are several excellent twists, a few laughs, some scorching sex, and a seemingly impossible to solve dilemma keeping Hawkyn and Aurora from their HEA... but we know they'll somehow get through it because these two are destined to be together.

Along the way, we also check in with Azagoth and Liliana, as their relationship gets put to the test by Azagoth's troubling realization that feeling emotions, like love, can be both a blessing and a curse. He's done a lot of bad things in his lifetime, and now he actually feels the pain he's caused... and he has no idea how to fix things. He makes the terrible decision to push Liliana away. She has to remind him that love is worth every speck of pain, every bit of vulnerability.

I saw this on the Audible Romance package, so I thought I'd give it a try. Unfortunately, I didn't start with the beginning of this series, so there was some things that would've been better if I had read the previous books. At least, Azagoth's book because there was a lot of Lilliana and His story in this one, so I'd recommend starting at the beginning of the series. The narrator didn't really fit the characters for me, but he did okay. The premise is interesting, I really liked the serial killer angle and the demonic angel stuff is interesting. The romance has sweet moments, but I didn't quite feel the connection growing between them. This story was entertaining enough that I'd like to continue the series starting with the beginning.

« It was meant to be. All of it. »
« Real change comes from tragedy. It’s how humans grow. »

Totally awesome. This book felt like I was in the Twilight Zone. Completely insane.

Where to even start… She was imprisoned and tortured by a serial killer. An angel rescued her and flashed them both to his father’s realm, Sheoul-gra or… Hell. Except that nothing went as planned…

« Are you my guardian angel? »
« Long story, but no. »

It’s Hawkyn and Aurora’s incredible story, and Azagoth’s part 2 all in one. It’s short. It’s sharp. It’s stunning. This is probably my favorite out of the 1001 Dark Nights/Demonica Underworld novellas.

I loved it.

I just love this author. The Demonica series is one of my favorite series ever. This author is an auto buy for me. That said, the 1001 Dark Nights novellas in this series are always a fun addition, even if they aren't a vital addition. I enjoy every word, though I am anxiously awaiting an actual book by this author. But these stories do help tide me over! And as much as I love this series, I honestly don't know how she can top Rever, so I'm hoping for a new series to enjoy. That said, I'll read anything this author publishes. And Hawkyn was sexy, fun, and entertaining. I fell in love with Aurora and Hawk, though it lacked fireworks for me.
