Written as a direct response to fears raised by division in post-Brexit Britain and since the election of Donald Trump in the USA, Hidden Wings is a superb book of spiritual transformation and hope for the future, by Margaret Silf, the bestselling author of Landmarks and At Sea with God. As the world around us moves into a period of immense and tumultuous change, and the structures and values by which we have charted our lives seem to be collapsing around us, many people are struggling to plot their spiritual path through an unfamiliar landscape or to believe in tomorrow. Using the analogy of the caterpillar entering the devastating, world-altering stage of the chrysalis, before emerging - transformed - as the butterfly, Margaret Silf demonstrates that this moment could be an opportunity for immense spiritual transformation and hope for the future.
This is not just a self help book, it goes way beyond that. It challenges us to think about the choices we can make as individuals, as a community and as the human race. Just as the caterpillar thinks it's the end when transformed into the chrysalis, might look like the end may in fact be the beginning
While the introduction does draw you in, by the time you get halfway through the book you want to give up. The analogy of a caterpillar changing into a butterfly is stretched so thin that it becomes transparent and breaks round the edges. In some ways the book does reflect the lifespan of the insect as the majority of the chapters focus on the caterpillar stage, less on the chrysalis and only briefly touches in the butterfly stage which leads to death. However the death stage is wished for much earlier in the book as the word ‘CaterpillarWorld’ is repeated so frequently. Random quotes from random people, attempting to project ‘ancient wisdom’ but only twisting it to the writers own purpose and taking an entire book to say what could be said in two chapters. Would not recommend or encourage you to read, there are far better books ‘in the forest’
