Deter McNellis never thought he’d be a victim—living through kidnapping, rape, and the threat of being sold as a sex slave. Getting rescued is only the beginning of healing. He’s forced to relive the experience over and over in his dreams and when he has to share it with the authorities. To Deter’s shock, he finds himself attracted to one of the deputies helping with the investigation—Marrakesh Anderson. The deputy invites him to call him Mac and gives off signals that he’s interested in Deter, too. Deter finds Mac’s clumsy attempts at wooing sort of sweet, and he struggles to overcome his fears so he can spend time with the handsome man. The appearance of the kidnapper’s buyers makes Deter worry he’ll never feel safe. To top it off, Deter discovers Mac is hiding something…something life altering. Can Deter gather enough courage to open himself to a future so full of change, or will his fears send him running?
Reader This book makes reference to past abuse / rape.
On a massive re-re-read of Charlie Richards' Stone Ridge world series. As stand alones these short stories and novellas are usually a 3/5 , With talented use of stereotypes, quick short plot arcs and descriptive writing they are fun to read. There is the occasional clunker coming in at a 2 due to gaps and unfinished mini plot elements. However, when read in series, they become a bit more as the world elements and overarching plots add depth.
Deter and Mac were so sweet together and I always love it when the gang (or parts of it) comes together to explain paranormals to a human mate (that's always fun). This was exciting, with danger and many precious moments between the mates and even Kontra's gang. I tend to dislike, bigots in my stories, although, this plot didn't focus too much on that, so that was great. I loved this and found it to be quite engrossing. =)
Charlie Richards is my favorite MM writer. I can't get enough of her Paranormal series-love them all! It was wonderful visiting Kontra's world again. Mac and Deter are great together. I'm so glad Deter found happiness after all that he's been through, and I hope the rest of the people who were held him are able to find it as well.
I continue to read the series though the stories that are only focused on the shifter revealing himself to his mate are not as interesting to me as when there is more of the ongoing story included. This is why I only gave this 2 stars.
This one, I didn't feel bombarded with catch phrases. However.. Deter (some of these names are very strange to me...) Deter is recovering not only from kidnapping with intent to sex slave, but also recovering from being raped. This happened before Elron (Counting on a Crow's Wing) made an appearance.
I'm not sure exactly how much time has passed since the incident, but he was just recently rescued so coming to grips with his circumstances isn't supposed to be instantaneous. And although shifters and mates make a connection super fast, with this being thrown into the mix, their physical relationship feels all kinds of wrong. Basically I didn't agree with the decision of them rushing into mating and sex.
Kontra's group has adopted some men that they rescued from human trafficking. They are mostly human men and scared after they were raped, abused, and rescued under odd circumstances. To hold each other up and through the men each imagined what they would do when they got free. Deter, one of those men, doesn't know what his life will be now, but he wants to be with someone he loves, someone of his choice. Deter is surprised when he feels an attraction to the deputy who questions him, Mac. Mac is a shifter and knows Deter is his mate. It is difficult for Deter to jump into a relationship, and Mac needs to woo and also explain the new world he has been brought into. With the help of Kontra's gang they will connect and also fight back against them men who still want to take back this group.
Where on earth does this author come up with her names?
I think the sexual abuse and the following healing was handled less than well and made to be way less trauma that is should have been.
I liked Mac, but still....
Finishing off all of Charlie Richards mastodont series is one of my goals for 2020. Not because these are the best, but because I’m a bit OCD about not finishing off series and they have been nagging at my conscious for a while now. So, whenever I feel like reading some relaxing (but rather mindless) stories I’ll dig in to my Charlie Richards pile.... I’m guessing there will be some more before I get back to work on the 8th....
A continuation of the story of the rescued men from Counting on a Crow's Wing. Deter gives his statement to Deputy Marrakesh Anderson about his kidnapping and that's how the two MCs meet. This story is back to the old style with the attraction between the MCs, a human learning about shifters, some bigotry and shifter justice style. A fun read as part of the series.
I enjoyed this story i was wondering if they would incorporate the rescued within the ongoing story line. The Deputy showed empathy not only for his mate but also for the other victims. The love interest was vulnerable and brave. Sometimes the only thing you can do is survive.
After rescuing the humans and paranormal that were kidnapped the game wasn't over. The police had to take statements and a mate was found. Toss in some bigotry and betrayal and you have a great story.
