The Seasonaires

Rate this book
For a twentysomething, there is no summer job better than being a seasonaire - No responsibilities, college is barely a thought, and you’re surrounded by glamorous, beautiful people. When life is this intoxicating and seemingly carefree, what could possibly go wrong?

Acclaimed screenwriting talent Janna King makes her fresh and thrilling debut with The Seasonaires. An idyllic Nantucket summer begins like a dream for scrappy Mia from South Boston; Presley, the gorgeous southern beauty queen; Cole, a handsome introvert; Jade, the sultry daughter of a model and music mogul; J.P., the energetic young designer; and Grant, the playful party-boy. These six are working as seasonaires - influential brand ambassadors - for the clothing line Lyndon Wyld. But like all things that look too good to be true, the darkness lurking underneath slowly rises to the surface.

Lyndon Wyld, the chic British tigress who owns the eponymous business, rules their daily life by curating their every move, which the seasonaires are obligated to post on social media for their growing throngs of followers. When corporate greed, professional rivalries and personal conflicts are mixed with sex, drugs, and the naiveté of youth, the results are explosive as the murder that will sully their catalog-perfect lives.

Six beautiful young men and women have been given an exceptional opportunity, to spend the summer on Nantucket and work for popular fashion brand Lyndon Wyld. They'll be "seasonaires"—influential brand ambassadors—for Lyndon Wyld, creating buzz for the entire collection, at events and especially through social media, where it's the number of followers and likes that tell the tale.

The group members are an interesting mix—Mia, a scrappy young woman from South Boston who dreams of a career in the fashion industry but has always put family in first; Presley, the beautiful, blonde beauty queen from the South who is the returning seasonaire from the previous summer, and wants to return again; Jade, the independent, beautiful daughter of a music icon and a model, who has plans of her own; Cole, the handsome introvert; J.P., a designer who can't be swayed from his ambition—and Grant, the carefree stud who flirts with everyone, and has never met a party he doesn't like.

The seasonaires have a pretty sweet life—visiting the Lyndon Wyld store and generating publicity at different events during the day, partying and socializing at night. The maven behind the brand, Lyndon Wyld herself, and her wily sister Grace keep watch on the group members via social media and know when they're doing the right things as well as the wrong things. But the group isn't prepared for an increasingly dangerous rivalry with another fashion brand, whose models are tougher and less supervised, as well as the copious amounts of alcohol, drugs, violence, and betrayal that they're faced with.

Mia loves the opportunities she's getting but can't turn off her protective nature, even when it means caring about a troubled model from the rival brand. She's also unprepared for not knowing whom to trust, and as the summer goes on, her suspicions and fears grow, ending in the murder of someone close to her, and she doesn't understand how a magical summer could turn so dangerous.

After reading a few dark, emotionally heavy books, I was looking for something lighter and more entertaining, and The Seasonaires definitely fit the bill. Janna King has created a fascinating look at a group of young people doing something I had never thought about, but I couldn't stop reading. This is one of those stories where a lot of the plot hinges on actions caused by things people don't say to one another, and people getting access to others' text messages, phones, and social media accounts, but I still found the story really enjoyable.

It's funny; much of the criticism of this book I've seen has stemmed from the fact that people couldn't identify with the seasonaires' activities, and that the reliance on social media, on stories and selfies and likes, made them feel old. I didn't agree with that. The plot may not be earth-shattering, and you may see much of the story coming (and there's at least one plot thread that falls flat since it tells more than shows), but I devoured this book in one day, and enjoyed it from start to finish.

If you're looking for a lighter read, or the perfect book for a late-summer break, try The Seasonaires . It'll definitely put you in the mood for a beach, and maybe a shopping trip or two!

Being a “Seasonaire” is an aspirational summer job for twenty-year-old trendsetters. For the lucky six brand ambassadors, they will have the opportunity to represent the trendy Lyndon Wyld clothing line. They have to wear these designer fashion garments while attending exclusive events. Their glamorous lives are broadcast to the world via social media where their sole responsibility is to promote the brand.

Mia is one of the chosen and is excited to spend her summer away from her modest roots in South Boston. Prior to her selection she worked in a thrift store and dreamed of designing her own clothing. Her excitement is diminished when she experiences cattiness among her fellow ambassadors. Mia also grows to dislike the controlling owners who micromanage their lives. Their insulated lives begin to change when one of their exclusive parties takes a turn for the worse.

The Seasonaires is an interesting view of millennials balancing life and work. In this story, everyone must work through their daily dramas while the public weighs in from social media. This debut novel by Janna King is being developed into a television series.

If this book made me feel anything at all then it's this .... OLD. Very old.

This story follows Mia, Presley, Cole, Jade, and Grant who have all been chosen by famous clothing designer Lyndon Wyld to "Seasonaire" in Nantucket for the summer. All the while they are required to post all their shenanigans to their social media accounts. Lyndon Wyld wants brand exposure and what better way to do it then to have 5 beautiful twenty somethings posting constant selfies while draped in her clothing line.

Drama. Drama. Drama. A lot of it. It exhausted me after awhile if I'm being honest. These people were all narcissistic and unlikable except for maybe Mia and Cole.

All in all this is a well written debut that sadly I just wasn't cool or hip enough to truly enjoy. I have a feeling that A LOT of people, that are cooler and hipper than I, are going to love this one.

Kudo's to the cover though, it's gorgeous.

Thank you to Katie @ Pegasus Books for sending me an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you to Pegasus Books for sending me a copy of The Seasonaires. Pub Date: May 1st. Wow, I enjoyed this. I feel like this was more drama with thrills towards the end but nonetheless I still liked it! Plus, there’s a murder so sign me the hell up! The story is told mostly through Mia’s POV but we do get a glimpse from a few other characters.

So, what’s it about? Lyndon Wyld owns a very popular and successful clothing line. Every summer she chooses six 20(ish)yo brand ambassadors to go to Nantucket for the summer. Lyndon calls them The Seasonaires. They each get paid 20k for wearing her clothes from the line, working the store, partying, and blasting their summer stay on social media. #wyld. Sounds like the best thing ever, right?! Living their best life!

The prologue opens up like scene out of a first episode of PLL but lucky for you, you won’t have to waste 7 years of your life to find out who is murdered and why. amiright? The six Seasonaires all move into the Nantucket mansion to start off their summer. Lyndon requires clothing line exposure from each of them through their stay and on social media. She wants insta story’s, selfies, more followers, more likes etc.

They learn fast that there is a competition from another line who also has “seasonaires”. Otto Hahn is the owner of the other clothing line. He is a slime ball and Lyndon does NOT want his line or his seasonaires to be more popular.

Oooo money, greed, drama, drugs, sex, lies ooo so juicy! I really enjoyed this. If your into drama I’d recommend! 4 ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I'm not sure what to rate this book. Not sure if it was the slump I was in or that the story wasn't quite my kind of story but I didn't really get attached to the story nor have strong feelings about it. Was an okay read

Just poorly written...lots of grammatical mistakes and no rhythm in the writing. Also, the author used the wrong “pedal” verb...which would be fine if it didn’t happen 50. separate. times. I internally groaned every time I had to read “they peddled over the cobblestones” or “peddled up the dirt path” which would make sense if the book were about six teens peddling their wares and services, not six teens PEDALING BIKES.

Making it to the 30% mark this book just kept making me feel SO old. I couldn't continue. I'm 31 and I literally felt plus 30 .. this wasn't for me and that is the extent of my thoughts on this book.

Thank you Pegasus Books for a free finished copy of this book in exchange for my honest thoughts.

I received a copy of this book from Kathleen Carter Communications #partner for an honest review. When this book arrived I hadn’t heard of a seasonaire before. After checking it out it appears to be quite common in Europe. Ski resorts and clothing and ski equipment companies hire twenty somethings to be brand ambassadors for their products. Their goal is to promote it constantly through social media platforms. This book is set in Nantucket so I was intrigued to read about the life of seasonaires there for the summer. The main character, Mia, is one of the six seasonaires hired to represent the Lyndon Wyld clothing brand. What a great way to spend the summer right? This is a well paid job where you live in a mansion and spend your days in the sun, surf, partying, and most of all showing this all on social media. There is competition and rivalry in the house as they all compete to have the most followers, likes, views, etc on their posts. Mia is the most naive and likeable of her house mates and you empathize with her as she navigates these chaotic few weeks. Through all the of the perks and abundance’s of the summer there is also the underside of their life on Nantucket that involves sex, greed, drug use, abuse etc. And for more excitement there is a murder to solve. The social media aspect and the power it holds is a major and interesting factor in this book. I enjoyed my time with the seasonaires. This would be a great summer beach read and it’s a great debut book for this author.

Thanks to the publisher for this review copy!

Nantucket + a sordid mystery + a cautionary tale of the falseness of social media = a perfect fit for anyone who enjoys reality television and wants their beach reads on the party-heavy side. I read this one like I watched soap operas between classes in college ~ unable to relate to the characters, but still somehow deeply invested in their stories and the outcome of the dishy drama. And if you don't believe that anyone would actually hire people to "live" their brand on social media, consider an email I just got in a newsletter from a marketing company with this headline: "Why Brands are Taking Instagram Influencers on Vacation." It's a THING. As someone who spends a lot of time on Instagram myself, a lot of this story was a scary picture of what the influencer world can be for the younger and more vulnerable.......and it's also just a straight up murder mystery set in a lush vacation world with a cast of wild youth to entertain the reader. Perfect for readers looking for an edgier beach read!

SO MUCH DRAMA! If there is one way to describe The Seasonaires by Janna King that would be it. This debut is filled with drama, twentysomethings behaving badly, and a healthy dose of sex and drugs although not in a graphic way. I love books that are drama-filled, kinda like reality shows, and I definitely got that with this one. I think that if you were a fan of The Favorite Sister by Jessica Knoll, you will most likely be a fan of this book as well as I thought they were pretty comparable as far as drama and storyline went.

I was looking at the library and noticed this one was on audio plus read by one of my favorites - Brittany Pressley - so I had to go that route and I loved it. I knew she would, but Pressley did a great job narrating and I think I enjoyed the book even more that way. There are a lot of characters to keep track of and I did get a little confused at times, but for the most part it wasn't too bad, and I enjoyed the different viewpoints. I also liked that the book started with the mystery and then went back to the beginning after that. It's a trick I have started seeing in a few books now and one that I enjoy.

The Seasonaires isn't going to be for everyone but if you love drama (like reality TV style drama) mixed with a little mystery this would be a great one to check out. I think it would also make for a perfect beach/summer read since I got plenty of beach vibes from this one thanks to the Nantucket setting. Overall a great debut and I am looking forward to book 2!

Thank you to the author for providing me with a review copy of this book! All opinions and thoughts are my own.

If I wasn't reading this on holidays I don't think I'd have bothered finishing it. Disjointed, no character depth, lots of loose ends not tied up, boring through the middle and the ending was crammed into a couple of chapters so it feels silly and far fetched, no explanation worth merit, plus chapters out of sequence, and stuff that has no bearing, eg, the Jade and JP storyline, Maz? genuinely can't understand how it got published and find it hard to believe the authenticity of the 4 & 5 star reviews on here, amazing what a free book will do. Just a total mess. Don't bother is my advice, shame it had potential as a story arc, maybe in the hands of a more competent writer?!

Don’t know how this landed in my library pile. Twenty-somethings become ‘influencers’ on social media for the summer. Terrible things happen, and I mean terrible. Drugs, rape, abuse etc. Thankfully, people responsible do go to jail.
Don’t waste your time.

My Review of “The Seasonaires” by Janna King Pegasus Books, On Sale May 2, 2018

Bravo to Janna King, Author of ‘The Seasonaires” for such a unique, sensual, captivating, intense, suspenseful and captivating novel. The Genres for this novel are Fiction, and Mystery. The timeline of the story is set in the present during the summer in Nantucket.

This is a coming of age story with suspense and mystery. Only a select few number of young people get the opportunity to become a Seasonaire. A Seasonaire’s job is to represent an expensive clothing line, by wearing the clothing, taking Instagram, and Snapchat photos, and other media that is useful. They mingle with the ‘beautiful ” people. Going to the beach, yachts, parties, drinking, drugs, sex and all kinds of fun are encouraged and part of the job. This and more for a couple of thousand dollars for the summer. It is almost getting away with murder!!!

In this novel there are twists and turns, there is jealousy and betrayal, suspense and murder. There is competition among the fashion industry, and danger. Is anyone or anything perfect? Are people who they say they are? The author describes her characters as complex and complicated. There are also secrets. Is there really something that seems to good to be true?

I appreciate that the author discusses the problems of media in society today, the problem with alcohol and drugs. The author also discusses self-worth, and growth, the importance of family, love and support.

I would highly recommend this entertaining and intriguing novel for readers that enjoy fiction, suspense and mystery. I received an ARC for my honest review.

When I first began reading The Seasonaires, my first thought was simple: if my daughter ever grows up to be like these people, she’s grounded until she’s 40!

While I haven’t changed that thought (at all), I did settle down and thoroughly enjoy the book.

The Seasonaires is full of glitz, glamour, and trashy behavior. You have a group of young adults (age 21 or thereabout) who get the chance to live their summer on Social Media. In exchange for having everything – good, bad, and extremely ugly – posted for likes and follows and representing one brand, our group gets lots and lots of money.

What could possibly go wrong?

Our tale of excess soon becomes a thrilling mystery and the reader is on edge, racing to find out exactly who did what…and why.

Now, there’s one little story line that defied logic for me in an kind of LOL – He was NOT and DID NOT sort of way. But it wasn’t enough to interfere with my enjoyment of the novel.

This is definitely a popcorn read – don’t expect it to change your life. But it’s fun. (And seriously, if my daughter EVER behaves like this she’s grounded…for decades!)

I kicked off beach read season with this juicy tale. The Seasonaires is the story of Lyndon Wyld, a clothing designer, who brings together a crew of twenty-somethings to live together in a house on Nantucket for the summer. Their job is to blast their fun on social media and be the face of the Wyld brand, promoting the clothing and lifestyle. Reminiscent of many MTV reality shows, the ambassadors drink, fight, and party their way through the summer. We've also got a corporate rivalry, greed, sex, drugs, murder, mystery, and it's all recorded on social media! The constant social media references got to be a bit much for me but it is definitely a great representation of current trends. Thank you @pegasus_books for this advance reader in exchange for my honest review. This light and juicy guilty pleasure hits shelves May 2nd!

Did no one proofread this? I was intrigued by the premise of the book at first but the more I read, the more mistakes I saw that became too distracting. There were grammatical errors and unnecessary uses of punctuation (periods where there’s should have been commas) and some sentences that were lacking any. Random words like “if” instead of “of” or other words that didn’t flow with the sentence at all and were most likely missed typos. Some. Sentence. structure.that.felt.too.forced.like.This.

I also feel that the ending was rushed and wrapped up too nicely, after coming off chapters that introduced 6 sub plots and a “surprise” reveal

This is essentially just a YA novel, full stop. The characters may be in their twenties (barely) but as far as I can tell the only reason this would ever be marketing as adult fiction is because there's a lot of drug use and implied nonconsensual sexual situations (which last I checked are still often present in teen novels? so who knows) Otherwise, the plot and the prose would fit right onto a shelf with Gossip Girl and its ilk. I wasn't especially impressed, and it took me a lot longer to finish than I would've expected out of something without much substance. Did kinda make me want to visit Nantucket again though!

When I first started this book I was like where was this when I was younger HAHA. Then the more I delved into each of their lives and what they experienced in Nantucket on a daily basis I decided - NOPE I'm good.

Nothing good can truly come from giving a 20 something $10,000 upfront and $10,000 at the end of a summer (a few weeks) for wearing their clothes and showing up at their events and handing out goodies.

From the crazy drug use, the rival clothing designers, uncontrollable drinking and frolicking with each other and sleeping with locals - there is never a dull moment in each and every chapter.

The perfect summer read hands down!

An insider's look at what it is to be an influencer. As many comments said, it made me feel a tad bit old, asking myself who in their right mind would want to make this a career. The competitive atmosphere , striving for "likes" and followers leads to backstabbing, jealousy and death. A pretty good read

Reading The Seasonaires was like watching a reality show play out in writing. I could picture all the beautiful, tanned, skinny girls. The guys with chiseled abs, perfect haircuts, gorgeous eyes. You can picture it right? Everything you were when you were in your 20’s. Ever seen Siesta Key’s on MTV? This is my image of all the characters in this book. The book is about these young adults who apply to become brand ambassadors for a very popular clothing line, and get the opportunity to spend their summer living it up in Nantucket. Mia spends her days scraping by and taking care of her terminally ill mother. When a customer comes into the thrift store she works at, and tells her she has a unique style and should apply to work for Lyndon Wyld, she knows this could be a great opportunity to get some money for her family. When Mia gets the news she has been chosen, she is shocked and feels selfish for wanting to leave, and worried her mom will struggle while she’s gone for the summer. Six people were chosen to stay in the Lyndon Wyld mansion, all from different walks of life. They will work together, take selfies together, shop together, and spend their summer living their best life for all to see. Basically their job is to wear the clothes, look beautiful at all times, and post on social media all day. #BeWyld Sounds like an amazing gig right? I mean I basically do that every day, but I don’t see anyone offering me $20K to do it! I never knew this was actually a thing until I Googled it. A brand ambassador is ”someone who represents a company in a positive way, preferably in front of potential customers. They embody the brand he or she is endorsing” . I could be a book ambassador all day every day! Mia gets along with everyone, but has a soft spot for a girl named Ruby, who is not a part of the brand, a known druggie and outsider. Everyone keeps telling her she’s no good, but Mia has such a compassionate heart she goes against what others tell her, especially the snobby Presley. Presley gave Mia a hand me down, last year’s Lyndon Wyld dress that Mia tweaked and made her own, and it’s caught the attention of the boss. She is offered a contract to buy her design, a dress they will name “Mia”. This can be a real life changer for Mia and her family, she loves fashion and has an eye for dressing people, maybe this can be a career for her. Mia has many choices to make this summer in Nantucket, and needs to decide if posting pictures of her life all day, being told what to do and who to be friends with is worth the sacrifice, or worth the money for her family.

THE SEASONAIRES by Janna King is an edgy and fast-paced drama with a bit of intrigue and a sordid murder mystery thrown in for good measure. It is the story of five twenty-somethings who are selected to be brand ambassadors for Lyndon Wyld, a trendy, upscale clothing and accessory line. They get paid to live all summer in an estate on Nantucket where they must promote the Wyld brand at all times by posting several times a day on all the popular social media platforms. Heavy partying, drinking, drugs and sex are not discouraged as long as it leads to more views, likes and follows. Things take a dangerous and deadly turn when the competition among the Wyld “seasonaires” and with another brand’s ambassadors causes jealousy and betrayal to threaten the safety of them all. I must say that I could not really relate to any of the characters, but that is likely because I am so much older than them. The story does reveal a darker side of the fashion industry and the controlling role of social media in today’s culture. THE SEASONAIRES is a racy debut novel and I look forward to seeing what come next from Janna King.

It's not really a mystery - I mean it is, but most of the plot is spent leading up to the murder (not a spoiler - it happens in the first paragraph and then it goes backward and starts at the beginning of the summer). It is really more about Insta-famous brand ambassadors putzing around on Nantucket and their pettiness and general terribleness. It's fine - nothing really exciting or suspenseful. Just a nice, easy summer read.
