It's Christmastime, and farmer Lucy Resnick is living the life she's always dreamed of. When she's not selling her jams, soaps, and mistletoe bundles at the Buttercup Christmas Market, she's enjoying cozy evenings by the fire with her knitting group--or her handsome veterinarian boyfriend Tobias Brandt. But less than a week before Christmas, a pall falls over the festive atmosphere when local man Randy Stone turns up with a knife in his back... and a sprig of mistletoe in his hair.
Local sheriff Rooster Kocurek, never the brightest bulb on the string, is convinced it's an open-and-shut case--murder by jealous wife--but Lucy suspects otherwise. She soon discovers that Randy's life was more tangled than last year's Christmas lights... and that unless she wraps up the case fast, there might be more than one funeral this holiday season.
I'm the author of the Agatha-nominated Gray Whale Inn mystery series, Tales of an Urban Werewolf. the Margie Peterson mysteries and the Dewberry Farm mysteries (plus a new fantasy in the works). My reading is like my writing: eclectic!
I grew up in the Northeast, but I currently live in Austin with my husband, two kids, and a houserabbit named Bunny. Feel free to visit me online at www.karenmacinerney.com; I love connecting with readers.
Another fun book in the Dewberry Farm Cozy Mystery series, full of delightful characters and delicious sounding recipes. Yet while I enjoyed this book, as I have the whole series, I found the plot in this one to be quite transparent, which is ok, it's a cozy after all, but I did find the mistakes in the plot, due to bad or non-existent editing, to be distracting. I will continue to read this series as it's amusing, however I'll be keeping in mind that the quality isn't as good as it could be.
Mistletoe Murder by Karen MacInerney is the 4th book in the Dewberry Farm Mystery series. Courthouse renovations in Buttercup unearth human bones and then a local man Randy Stone is stabbed. Former reporter and now farmer Lucy Resnick is asked to investigate when her friends sister is arrested. It is nice to catch up with Lucy and the other residents of Buttercup and to see her relationship with Tobias progress. It is hard to believe that the town puts up with such an incompetent sheriff though. The mystery was a little weak and rather obvious but otherwise an enjoyable , light and typically cozy book. Delicious sounding recipes are included.
It’s the week leading up to Christmas, and the town of Buttercup, Texas, is buzzing about the skeleton recently uncovered in the city hall renovations. However, that changes when a dead body turns up in the parking lot of the local Mexican restaurant. The victim is Randy Stone, and the sheriff thinks it’s a case of a jealous wife stabbing her husband. But Lucy Resnick isn’t so sure, so she begins her own investigation, hoping to find the truth. Can she do it before an innocent woman spends the holiday in jail?
It was wonderful to pop in on these characters for a second Christmas mystery. The plot is strong with several good surprises before we reach the local climax. Lucy and her boyfriend are fantastic. While Lucy’s friends are all here, the spotlight is on a different one this time, and I loved her sub-plot. I did find a couple of continuity errors early on, but they were minor and didn’t affect anything as far as the mystery itself goes. Throw in seven delicious sounding recipes, and you’ve got a Christmas winner.
Book 4. It is Christmas in this book.Lucy is selling beeswax candles mistletoe bunches and and some homage soaps at the Christmas Market. Tobias her veterinarian boyfriend and her were doing great. And Lucy and her pals, Quinn, Molly, Flora , Mandy are now having a sewing club together. But Lucy does not think she will finish the scarf that She is planning to see for Tobias so she does not know what to buy him. Flora is alone on Christmas so Lucy asks her to help her in Christmas Market. Flora finds someone Gus at Christmas Market that is wanting to date her. Mandy sister Isabella and her husband Randy are having a marriage problems. Lucy gets a call that Randy has been killed at The restaurant that Mandy and her family owns. Mandy wants Lucy to find the real killer of Randy. Because she believes that her sister Isabella has not killed her husband. This is a great one. I have read 3 books in this series so far. This one I liked this one the best. I have not read the 2nd one but read 1, 3,and 4. Once you get into these books in the series they really are great. Love the apricot poodle that Lucy has. It reminds me of a poodle I had when I was 28. Will keep reading these series
I really enjoy all the farm and cooking bits. I really only read these for that purpose. They come with recipes at the end as well. Reading these books makes me want to dive into more handmade items.
The mystery itself was lackluster. To be fair I didn't guess who the murderer was this time. But Rhonda's 'big secret' was obvious a quarter of the way through the book. At least there seems to be some progress in Lucy and Tobias' relationship.
I enjoyed this holiday time cozy setting, and the newest story about Lucy Resnick. I’ve read all the stories in the Dewberry Farm Mysteries and recommend them to cozy Readers.
I love reading holiday themed books. There is always a lot more romance what with the seasons and the happy couples. There is also deceit, false accusations and usually a murder. This is what you get in Mistletoe Murder. Karen MacInerney write this series and makes you feel like you are right there witnessing everything going on but also keeps you in suspense until the end. I can't wait for the next book in the series to come out.
I live the main characters Lucy and Tobias. They are a sweet couple. It was a good mystery but some aspects were predictable but I didn’t figure out the murderer. Things kept being added to the story leading you down different paths. The police are incompetent which leads Lucy who was once an investigative reporter to figurer out who the murderer is. It is set at Christmas time but not overly Christmasy and can be read any time of year. I look forward to reading other books in this series. I also felt jumping in on book 4 of the series was fine can be read on its own away from the series.
I've seen a few book pals enjoying this series and thought I'd take the opportunity to jump right in with this latest release since I was still in the mood for holiday-themed reads. I had no difficulty diving in with Mistletoe Murder even though it is book four. I enjoyed it so I will be going back for the earlier books when I get the chance.
It had the usual hallmarks of a cozy mystery, but also a bit of country charm all its own. The series takes us down on the farm where the main character and amateur sleuth, Lucy, has retired as an investigative journalist for a big Houston newspaper and now spends her days as a farmer and engaging in small town life. The author doesn't stint on descriptions of Lucy's farm activities and her small business of selling candles and other items she makes from her farm's produce or her time with her knitting social group, activities around town, or stolen moments with her boyfriend, the town vet, Tobias.
The mystery is introduced in the opening pages when Lucy learns that her good friend's sister is now arrested for killing her cheating ne'er do well husband. Most people are content to blame the wife, but Lucy tracks down other suspects with equally strong motives. The circumstantial evidence is strong so she has her work cut out for her.
I enjoyed following Lucy around for her investigations even as I rolled my eyes over the incompetent sheriff and the nearly absent deputies that left the field clear for Lucy to do her thing. Lucy's strategy is to combine benevolent friendly neighbor with giving people a chance to talk about things. Eventually, they give her a tidbit that brings her one step closer to the truth. The case had a few possible answers and suspects so I was left guessing until the reveal though I did figure out several smaller mysteries along the way including the cold case mystery that was also part of the plot. The romance was only one of the background story elements, but I did like what there was. Tobias and Lucy are trying to awkwardly figure out what comes next when it comes to spending the holiday together and, blush blush, sleeping over. It was cute and sweet, but they do work it out without much fuss.
The holiday season was portrayed with the preparations for Christmas and the Christmas market, but this was offset by a murder's tragic effects on the town and so many people so it was bittersweet.
Karen White expertly narrated and I liked how she did Lucy and her circle's middle aged voices, her genders, Texas twang, and told an all around good story. I have listened to her work before and enjoyed the husky quality to her voice and the way she makes me see the story clearly as she tells it.
All in all, I enjoyed this first outing with the Dewberry Farm Mysteries and look forward to more. Cozy Mystery fans should definitely give these a go.
My thanks to Tantor Audio for the opportunity to listen to this book in exchange for an honest review.
A quick, easy read and a very good addition to the series. There were some random, unfortunate editing mishaps which were a little jarring. I do plan to continue with the series.
I loved this Christmas mystery set in Buttercup, TX. I hadn't read a book in the series for a while and was more than ready to read this when one of my online book clubs picked it for tonight's discussion. I was really glad that Sheriff Rooster was kind of on the sidelines instead of in the main story. He was so infuriating in the first two books, lol. I had to laugh when something funny happened to him! His deputies did just fine investigating the case without him.
I hadn't figured out the killer, but I did guess part of something else that was going on. There were a couple of side mysteries going on, one which involved finding some stolen paintings during the courthouse renovation as well as some bones that had been buried under the courthouse. It was interesting to watch former investigative reporter Lucy run with this. I really like where she and Tobias are in their relationship now. Flora even found someone in time for Christmas. Two families ended up being very grateful to Lucy for helping out in this case. I need to go back and read the third book which I kind of missed since this discussion was coming up fast. :)
Such a fun series! It was nice fitting this one into my holiday reading this year. It definitely puts you in a Christmas mood, and I actually managed to figure out a bit of the whodunnit this time! I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series.
This series has been an absolute joy to read. If not for a fellow cozy mystery book bingo reader I don’t think I ever would have came across it.
Book four takes place the last week or so leading up to Christmas. Lucy is trying to sell enough at the Christmas market to sustain her through the winter, finish a scarf for her boyfriend for his Christmas present, and finds herself involved in not one murder but two and a case of old bones found in the courthouse. How will she ever finish everything before Christmas?
If you have read this books previous to this one you know Lucy has some quirky farm animals. They do not really appear in this book. Her poodle has a few scenes and that is it. Hence why I only gave 4.25 stars. The animals provide so much excitement. They really need to be a part of the story more. Fingers crossed they appear in the next installment.
Although I did guess who did the killing it was still fun guessing the why. A lot was going on in this book but the author did a fantastic job keeping everything straight and tying up the loose ends.
There is a romance in the book but it works. I love seeing the progression of Lucy and Tobias. I wonder what is in store next for them.
A great read if you live a farm theme, animals, and big Texas country.
The more books I read in the Dewberry Farm series, the more I want to move to a small town in Texas! Mistletoe Murder is another winner from Karen MacInerney - set at Christmastime in the very cozy town of Buttercup. Murder is always depressing, but especially at the holidays, and when Lucy Resnick is asked to help clear the name of her friend's sister who is accused of killing her cheating husband she has her work cut out for her. Meanwhile, old bones and valuable paintings found during the restoration at the courthouse may be clues to the disappearance of another man. Nicely woven tale, and a quick and clever mystery. A+
Winter has arrived in the little town of Buttercup, Texas and once again a killer is loose. Buttercup is the home of novice farm girl Lucy Resnick who is struggling to maintain her grandmother's farm. The town is in the throes of Christmas season when the body of Randy Stone is found dead at local favorite restaurant Rositas. Everything points to a crime of passion, with his wife Isabella being implicated for offing her cheating man. Lucy, who is a former investigative reporter, goes in search for the true killer.
I generally don't read many mysteries but I thoroughly enjoy all of Karen MacInerney's cozy mystery series. I especially enjoy her Dewberry Farm Mysteries for the Texas references and setting. I am looking forward to furthering adventures in Buttercup, Texas.
My requirement for Christmas Read, fast read, cozy mystery or romance, magic or hygge. And this book fit the bill perfectly. This was one of the cute murder mystery books found during a casual walk in the aisles of Amazon. This was Book 4 in the series, yet the book adopted me and engulfed me with its inner warmth and cosiness and colorful characters.
Lucy, an ex-investigative reporter, lives a full life in Buttercup village selling her soaps and candles, enjoying a new love Tobias, and a knitting club who meet everyday - WOW!!
When Randy Stone is found knifed in the parking lot...
My first book by Karen Mac Inerney saw me gently enveloped in the soothing country life with Lucy and friends, full of goodwill and cheer. Lucy embarks on an investigative journey, but soon finds herself with the barrel of a gun trained on her.
The book had a pet dog, farm animals, cows and chickens, market stall, local eatery, with homemade fudge and knitted sweaters, but don't get swayed by all this cuteness... It had an underbelly of crime with train robber, missing paintings, useless sheriff who shoots himself, 1 old murder, 1 new murder, extra marital affairs, an unexplained pregnancy, psychic friends, and bones burried under the courthouse.
Karen's writing made all this so entertaining that I couldn't help but want more of it. A cute fast read at 200+pages, it kept quite engrossed from start to finish. And yes, I was more enchanted by the homemade soaps, candles, and fudge that I quite forgot to play the detective!!
Christmas time should be full of family, fun, love and happiness - but this is Buttercup and nothing seems to go that smoothly!
Lucy is getting things ready for the Christmas market (candles, soaps, sprigs of mistletoe etc) and she is also trying to knit a scarf for her boyfriend, the veterinarian Tobias, the market items are going well - the scarf not so much! Mind you she isn't the only one Flora has joined the Buttercup Knitters and wants to finish a baby blanket for her nephew, when they are tidying up she has to admit that the nephew is now applying for his drivers permit and she had joined to stop herself rattling around the house on her own. Lucy comes up with the idea that Flora can help her man (err woman) the market stall and when she does Flora comes up with some brilliant ideas for more bath products, oh and she seems to have caught the eye of Gus a local woodworker.
So everything is looking rosy and Festive - until the sister of one of the knitters is arrested for stabbing her philandering husband! Mandy doesn't believe her sister could do this and asks for Lucy's help (after all Sheriff Rooster Kocurek thinks he has solved the crime quickly and so isn't looking at anyone else), then there is another death, a woman disappears and a skeleton and some paintings are found during the renovations of the Town Hall! Now with the Sheriff having (literally) shot himself in the foot Lucy and Tobias as trying to find out the truth, before the missing woman becomes yet another victim!
Pleasantly surprised with this book! The setting immediately made me feel warm and cozy. The MC lives in an old farm house, with a wood stove, goats, hens and a cow to provide her eggs and milk. She bakes and prepares goods to bring to the local market. I mean come on… this was so up my alley 🥰 Loved the Christmas vibes. Loved that the book includes the recipes for the delicious sounding desserts she bakes in the book. Plus, there’s a murder in her small village… *dun dun dunnnn* so there’s a mystery element as well!
I read the paperback so I can’t speak on the audiobook quality. Also, I haven’t read any of the other books in the series but I had zero trouble keeping up, it’s a pretty simple book to grasp lol And short, I think it was 210 pages.
Just an all around quick and fantastic holiday read!
This came across my path, and thought I'd try it as a Christmas read. I'm not really big on mysteries, or at least, mysteries on their own, but it sounded interesting nonetheless. It's a cozy one, which was fine with me, where she's a former investigative reporter originally from Houston, that does some asking around to after someone popped up stabbed. This was better than the anthology one I listened to for Halloween because those detectives per se, just felt like it was too much to believe they would be going around playing detective as they did. This one felt a little more in the realm of believability. In the end, it was a nice way to spend a quiet day after the holiday listening while I worked.
This is a great series. It's Christmas time in Buttercup, TX and Lucy is getting into the swing of wintertime on the farm. She is growing some winter veggies and making and selling her soaps and jams at the local markets. When one of the locals, Randy Stone is found murdered in the parking lot of the local Mexican restaurant, sheriff Rooster calls it an open-shut case. He chalks it up to a crime of passion, the revenge of a scorned wife. Rooster, although never the sharpest tool in the shed, is even further off his game due to an impending divorce and self-inflicted gunshot wound to his foot. Lucy just doesn't feel right about the arrest of Randy's wife and starts digging around to find the real killer. I really like Lucy and hearing about her life on the farm.

I guess I jumped into the middle of this series 🤣 my bad! I just wanted a quick Christmas read! Anyway, this was a cozy, cute mystery book. Lucy is a retired investigative reporter who is helping to solve a murder that happened the week the before Christmas in her small town! It was a quick, easy read that I enjoyed! I can't wait to read the rest in the series, I'll definitely start from the beginning lol
This is the first book I’ve read in this series and I really enjoyed it. The characters are likable and believable. The plot was well constructed. I did guess a few things but I hadn’t figured out the murderer until the reveal.
For those that enjoy cooking or baking, there are some great recipes at the end of the book.
I look forward to catching up on the Dewberry Farm Mystery Series.
What a great story with some really likeable characters. One of the story arcs was a cold case which is always a favorite of mine. I really enjoyed the wrap up of this one too and can’t wait until my next visit to Dewberry farm.
This was an acceptable listen. Lucy it still making dumb decisions like going to where the murderer is alone after suspecting they’ve killed many time 🙄🙄🙄 the mystery is pretty standard cozy
