68 Kill Part 2

Rate this book
A month after narrowly surviving the most harrowing night of his life, Chip Taylor is living in a seedy, pay-by-the-week motel in a sleepy coastal town in Florida. He still has most of the 68 grand he and his crazy ex-girlfriend stole back in Tennessee, but he's a man living at loose ends, directionless and without a plan. He's drinking too much and surrendering to too many of the same temptations that landed him in so much trouble in the first place. It isn't long before Chip finds himself wrapped up in another nightmarish descent into bloody madness and chaos. And this time his survival is more in doubt than ever.

Excellent sequel

A great follow up to the first book. I am a big fan of Bryan Smith’s work. It’s really sick and pervy and he’s second only to Richard Laymon. It’s smut, and I mean that as a compliment.

Bryan Smith follows up 68 Kill with Chip about a month after his escape from Tennessee hiding away in a seedy hotel in Florida. Having stayed out of trouble for a little while, Chip is living peacefully until he is once again dragged into a world of chaos, violence, and depravity. Of course, as a staple of Smith's writing, the chaos comes in the form of a woman who is incredibly beautiful but also happens to be insane. Chip goes from tranquil existence to evading the police, encountering redneck psychos in the wild, and having to get his hands dirty in a number of strange and interesting situations.

Coming into 68 Kill Part 2, knowing how the story progression in 68 Kill Part 1 went, I didn't find this reading experience as jarring as the first novel. Part 1 felt like it was a bit unconnected and scattered and like Smith was grasping at straws attempting to make everything come together. Part 2 felt much more plotted out and tighter.

Compared with previous Bryan Smith books I've read, this one is a bit tame but still touches upon those extreme horror roots Smith is known for. Once again, there is no real "antagonist" in the novel. Chip goes from place to place stumbling upon terrible situations and navigating his way out in one piece. Even so, this book doesn't fail to delivery on the entertainment factor. Each chapter leaves you wondering where the plot is heading, who or what will be the next obstacle, or whether or not the beautiful woman with Chip at the moment is either going to try to kill him and steal his money or if there is a genuine connection between them. There's always something dark and dangerous behind every corner.

Overall, 68 Kill Part 2 is an excellent sequel and improves upon the weaknesses of the original story.

How do you follow up a brisk, action packed book that was full of exciting women who are beautiful, strong, and sensual? By following the co-dependent meek guy who somehow wooed each of those far-more-interesting women at some point in the prior novel, of course!

Oh, Chip. He's in hiding because, well, of course he is. After the events of 68 Kill, he's a wanted man. But, flush with 68 large, he's gonna just relax at a hotel and wait for this shit to cool off, y'know. And it would have worked if it weren't for you meddling horny women!

So, our man Chip finds himself irresistible to all women of course. They don't want his money, just his company. Unprotected company, if you catch my drift. And in any Noir-inspired work, with women comes danger and, yep - we're back into the car chases, hiding from dangerous creeps/mobs and positively drowning in additional women who provide erotic comfort and additional dangers with the precision of a goddamn Rolex.

Look, you shouldn't be reading this book if you haven't read the first. It opens about a month after the first, with those events weighing on Chip's mind. That said, if you read the first, this is more of the same. And I say that with love. If you want an action-noir written by an author who happens to be skilled at horror (and thus ratchets up the tension and danger nicely), then read them both. Then watch the movie based on the first. Then, I don't know, write your congressman to demand public funding for a sequel to that movie based on this book.

Great Continuation of 68 Kill

I have fast become a huge fan of Bryan Smith. I have read 3 of his books and look forward to reading more. This one picks up where the first left off with the misadventures of his anti-hero Chip who is a combination or the most unlucky man and the luckiest. It story line is compelling and filled with action, gore, violence and sex. The pages flew by as Chip goes from misadventure to misadventure in his life on the run.

The further adventures of Chip Taylor as he continues to make bad life choices. A wild rollercoaster ride of a novel that keeps you turning the pages to see if Chip's current misstep will be his last. Very highly recommended.

I found this to be an enjoyable, easy read and tbh, I'm a little miffed it hasn't been adapted into a film like its predecessor.
