Okay, as a standalone story, I'd probably give this three stars. It's well-written, atmospheric, and moves along well—it just feels like a start of something larger. Well, lucky for us, it is. As a prequel/prologue/appetizer, it's great. Plus you get the proper opening chapter of said larger piece, THE CHILD AT THE END OF TIME. If I wasn't amped to check that out (soooon!) before, these two chunks got me there. pml
