You don't mess with the Kerrigans. A family seeks shelter at the Kerrigan ranch only to be attacked and executed. Kate Kerrigan will avenge this at any cost. The Devil to Pay the fifth book about the Kerrigan dynasty is another good western series by William W. Johnstone and J.A. Johnstone. It is a hard life on the range and when the nearest neighbor is three days away on horseback you have to be able to sort things out yourself.
The good guys are good, and the bad guys are bad. A Saturday morning serial would be proud of the efforts to keep the Johnstone novels alive. Another winner. I received an advanced digital copy through #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I have read quite a few books from William Johnstone, I have to say I was disappointed with this whole series and this book in particular to me was the worst. I do like some of the characters but the author was so contradicting in many moments of the book it just got a little too ridiculous for me.
A good story to end the series. William W. Johnstone is an excellent writer and I usually enjoy his books. I'm going to read some of his work in other genres.
It was good to see a strong female character in this book. Normally it is ruthless gunmen or lawmen bent on saving the day. I loved this book as much as all of the others I have read.
You can always count on an exciting story when you read Johnstone books but this one is even better! The good guy is actually a girl and manages to make the villians sorry they crossed her. As a woman in the West, Kate had many more restrictions on her actions but still manages to teach the bad guys a fierce lesson. This is not a typical Johnstone book, but it's as good...or better...than the others.
I haven't read a western since reading L'Amour 20 years ago. This was fabulous in comparison to my memories. I thought no one could write a western as well as L'Amour. I was wrong. Strong, lonesome cowboys, even stronger cattle Barron women, and a great shoot out that leaves the bad guys on Boot Hill.
