When was the last time you read a story with the backdrop of the Alamo?
This story starts in the week leading up to General Santa Anna's attack of the Alamo. General Santa Anna has just crossed her fathers land. Victoria Ruiz with the help of her ex suitor Estaban flees her home leaving her mother and father behind. She is headed for her cousin Juan in the town of San Antonio de Bejar.
The town of Bejar has no idea that General Santa Ana is so close. Victoria can't understand why no one is getting ready.
At this point we get our first mention of Jake Dumont. he is trying to find out any news of his brother Brandon. He finds out from Lieutenant Colonel Travis that he has missed Brandon by less than a week. His plan is to let his horse rest up and heal. Fury was attacked by a cougar. I really liked Jake. He is a loner who does not see the good inside himself. He never lets anyone close.
This changes when he lays eyes on Victoria. They first meet over a kettle of chicken soup. He saves her from a dog that is intent on having the soup. The town of Begar finds out that General Santa Anna is close. Jake tells her of his plans to leave and find Brandon and Victoria and Juan ask him to stay and fight. He refuses and she calls him a"shiftless drifter." Victoria and Jake are attracted to each other.
Estaban shows up in Juan's kitchen to tell her That General Santa Anna is a few miles out. Estaban has sided with General Santa Anna. While Juan is fighting for a free Texas. Jake sees them together in Juan's kitchen. He thinks she is a spy. As the church bells ring the warning he helps get her safely to the fort. He takes her to the church where the other women are to be housed. Victoria thinks Jake has left. She is informed by Juan that he is still there.
Mean while General Santa Anna has come to the Alamo. The days pass with Santa Anna's army firing on the Alamo and the soldiers withing returning fire. General Santa Anna offers a halt of the guns for three days. Jake at that time tries to get Victoria to leave. His plan is to get her to leave and then he can go find his brother. We find out why Brandon left their home. She finally leaves and he slips out to find Brandon. Victoria gets to safety by hiding on one of Juan's ranches. And we follow Jake on his search for his brother.
He heads back to Bejar and sees smoke coming from the Alamo. He now has to deal with the guilt of loosing friends. He heads off to find Victoria. He finds her in a cabin on Juan's ranch. They have one night together and she tries to tell him something and he doesn't listen to her. And it is here where the story takes a turn that you don't see coming.I thought here would be a nice place for the HEA. But no! Estaban is waiting the next morning thinking that he is going to catch Juan. He takes Jake prisoner after searching his saddlebags and finding a medical bag filled with doctors tools inside. They are not Jakes. He feels that Victoria has betrayed him. He is made to treat the sick and wounded in General Santa Anna's camp. Then he is marched to Goliad. In Goliad he made to treat the sick and wounded there.
There he finds Brandon. Here is where I could have done without! Victoria pretends to be in with Estaban. Don't follow me!! don't worry I had to read it twice to get it myself. Estaban helps Jake and Brandon escape as a favor to Victoria. He goes back and saves Victoria while Victoria's cousin Deigo gets Brandon to safety. They meet up and find an abandoned homestead. Victoria nurses Brandon back to health. While Jake rides off to find Juan and prove himself worthy.
Some famous names were mentioned in this book.Earlier I mentioned Santa Anna and Travis. Bowie and Crockett were mentioned as well. This was the first time I have read anything by Kathryn Albright. I felt this was a really good book. It sucked me in right away. Can't wait to read Brandon's story "Texas Wedding for Their Baby's Sake."
I started this book late at night, after finishing another book. It was really late, and I was very tired from a long day, but let me say, I had a hard time putting it down. Right from the very first line, I knew it would be one of those books you can't stop reading. This morning, I picked it up again, and was on page 76 before I knew it.
I've been constantly checking Kathryn's website to see when her next book would be out, having loved, "The Angel and the Outlaw". I was surprised after the first, to find that it was the only book to date she'd written. I patiently awaited her next release. Though it took some time, it was well worth the wait.
I've heard how demanding agents and publishers can be, much to do with sales and timing. I've seen too often the results of authors pushing out books because of dead lines, etc. and producing books that are disappointing. I'd much rather have a long wait, and be happily rewarded with such a great story and writing, then to get those books one after another, but at the expense of poor writing. So way to go with sticking to only producing something great, Kathryn!
You are bound to be one of those authors that are around for a long time, if you keep producing the incredible work you have. Thanks for inspiring me to keep writing. It's writers like you, who keep me driven to aspire to write great novels as you.
For my #1 challenge (Read a Western), I read The Rebel and the Lady by Kathryn Albright. Victoria Torrez is on the run from Santa Anna's forces as they invade Texas. To protect Victoria, her parents have sent her to live with her cousins Juan and Diego. While helping at the local hospital and secretly helping the rebels, Victoria meets Jake Dumont who is searching for his brother.
Jake has never understood why his brother wanted to fight for Texas so badly. In his mind, land was just not worth dying for. He had come from Charleston to drag his brother back home. Jake had never expected to meet such a highborn lady of quality as Victoria Torrez, or to find that such a lady could fall for a drifter like him. Jake would find that each person had his or her own reason for fighting for the freedom of Texas.
I have never read a Western before, they were not really my type. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and give it a B+!
After reading Texas Wedding for Their Baby's Sake, I was pleased to find that yes, Brandon's brother Jake did have his own story. And thanks to the instant gratification of ebook download, I was very happy to be able to stay with these lovely characters for another book. The history in this is rich and colourful and Ms. Albright was very sucessful in weaving the historical facts into the fabric of her lovestory. I enjoyed this one very much!
