Meadows must be "a terrific Dungeons and Dragons player. World-building is his forte!"--Wilmington Star News
Welcome to Malden, a quaint port city on the Cape Fear River, where tourists go to see 200-year-old buildings and to hear the local pirate lore that is its history. And perhaps its present. A Halloween night murder sends detectives Loretta Battle and Evinrude Kragg delving into the depths of the occult to face the horror that has haunted Malden for hundreds of years. Readers are raving about this debut novel from Max Meadows!
Readers of Stephen King and James Patterson will enjoy this page-turning thrill ride! SLACK TIDE is the first book of THE CAPE FEAR TRILOGY from Max Meadows.
Max Meadows, native North Carolinian, gets story ideas and character names from dreams. Several years ago, while at a conference in Barbados on a revamped slave plantation, the character of Otymnestra came in a dream. She told Max her life story and her unusual name. Upon waking, Max attempted to look up the name online--and found not one reference. The CAPE FEAR TRILOGY has its origins in this dream and that trip to Barbados.
A classic southern gothic mystery, complete with secret societies, well rounded characters, pirates, a curse, war veterans, & a whole lot of intrigue. The main characters are a balanced detective team making their way through a recent murder involving the brother of the female detective Loretta Battle. Their case harkens back to a near 40yr old cold case, with startling similarities. I found this book rather intriguing & hard to put down, add in a dose of the supernatural, or a nod to it for good measure. I really did want to like the ending, but it fell flat in my view, left room for a sequel, but never really decided if it was a mystery or supernatural. I'm curious if anyone else has read it, what you think?

Quite well-written and engaging! Multifaceted characters made me want to join them in the story. Small towns and their inhabitants contain secrets just waiting to be discovered..This is a really good read that I couldn't put down! Looking forward to Book 2!
