In the heart of Middle America, a cult watches over us. They make sure the corruption that erodes away at our beliefs remains in check.
Nolan is one of them. They gave him a family when he had none.
But when the cult abducts a young girl to control her unusual gift, he knows sacrifices must be made. Desperate to save her, Nolan flees across the Bible Belt in pursuit of her freedom and his salvation.
Straw Boss introduces a new kind of cult; and it is unlike any you’ve ever heard of. While reading; I thought it was a great combination of the movies Maze and Captain Fantastic with added science fiction.
This is to be a follow up to Ribbons, but it read more like an introduction to a new series. I appreciate Evan’s writing style, this his second book I’ve read. It is definitely a quick read; I finished in one sitting. I really enjoyed this book, but it left me wanting more. I hope there’s a follow up to this follow up.
Tasty novella from the author of Ribbons (which I still have to read). I admire the relative spareness of descriptions - the story's really carried by the characters, their psychologies, and the desperate terrible choices they make.
So to be fair, when I grabbed my copy of this book I had no idea it was a follow up to another book which would explain why I felt like I was missing something. That feeling kept me from getting into the story.
I like quick reads, crazy twists, and stories about cults. Check. Check. Check. I started guessing where it was headed toward the end, but I was wrong. I love when that happens. (Also, by the time I got around to looking at this, I’d forgotten why I downloaded it. I opened it thinking I was about to read a crime novella. Surprise!)
