SHTF #2

Shoot Like a Girl

Rate this book
The sequel to the Fight Like a Man. The end came not with boots on the ground, nuclear weapons or an EMP. It snuck in with a quiet clatter at the back door and flipped the switch, covering the states in darkness and sending this family on three divergent paths that ultimately led them home. When the family is finally reunited in this surreal and gripping family drama, it wasn't without bullets and bloodshed. It wasn't without loss of life. And now that they're home, the real nightmare begins.

As Grayson allows a few nonfamily members into the fold at the homestead not everyone is as accepting. Some of those that make it back home are unaware of the trouble that has followed. Back in Jake’s former subdivision tensions run high as the division between the homeowners grows wider with Curt driving the wedge deep. And, there’s more to Puck than meets the eye.

Akers’ second novel in The SHTF Series, Shoot Like a Girl: A Post-Apocalyptic Thriller, starts immediately where book one stopped. Emotions run high in both a good, loving way and a defiant, mean way. The reader is pulled in one direction only to be jolted into the other.

If you don’t want to snatch the hair off Olivia’s head by the time you’ve finished this book, then there is no hope for you. She and Curt are vying for Darwin Award nominations. I don’t wish either of them dead, but dayem. Akers is that good.

Not sure how this is going to play out with part of the family still separated and no word on what the government is doing. Society devolved quickly and shows no sign of recovery. Grayson and his family are going to have to dig deep to keep everyone safe and to be able to survive long term.

Comparing book one and two I would say this is the better. Book one set the stage and book two ran full out continuing the story. Neither book can be read as a standalone. And, though I wouldn’t say book two ended like book one with a cliffhanger, it certainly left you with a sense of foreboding.

5 out of 5 stars.

My review

WOW Lisa, another fantastic book. There are too many of my favorite people to name and I admired those same favorites, but I adored Elmer and he definitely had my heart. To find his precious Edith the way he did, just tore me up. And Puck, was my hero. He has come so far thanks to Grayman. I need to know about that beautiful little baby girl and I really need the next installment.
Thank you Lisa for yet another amazing book. I love you girl. June

Ok so i like the story

Most characters are likable, but some are so stupid. Unfortunately reflects real life. My sisters can be infuriating. We come together in hard times, but I've often thought about how it would be in these types of scenarios. And my brain explodes. Every little button would be pushed, every childhood/teenage infraction would be brought up. It would be dangerous in a life or death situation.
However Olivia takes the cake. Even my crazy sister would get it. The other thing that happened, I'm not sure if it would have been as bad, but something similar would likely be committed. One exception, there would not have been an apology.
And seriously, no one gets it about Puck? I lay stupid stamp on everyone's forehead. Sometimes I had to take a break to get away from the absolutely embarrassing or dumb s!^t happening in the story. But again I envision it occurring in most groups as there is always unforeseen and unknown events or actions of others that will muck it up.. And trusting others to step up is always a gamble, hate micromanaging, so maybe have to secretly check up on things being done.

The sequel to “Fight Like a Man,” “Shoot Like a Girl,” is a novel based the premise that a cyber attack on the grid will severely disable and devolve our society. While this book shows how many develop and grow in mental and physical abilities, it also shows that many will give in to their baser urges simply because they can.
The Bikers we are introduced to in “Fight Like a Man,” show up, still on their scavenger hunt. Surprises abound, and we learn more about some of the members o this gang.
In Jake’s upscale neighborhood a crisis is looming, lives are on the line. Will one mans selfish need to be “The Boss,” cause the loss of an innocents life? Can the neighborhood unite in these terrible times?
If you like a novel that keeps you guessing and on your toes, Akers “Shoot Like Girl” is definitely a Book you want to read.

Kept me interested

I was happy to read a post apocalyptic book that wasn’t just a string of gun comparisons/Descriptions. The story moved along well and the characters were well defined. I will buy the third book. My only beef, and why I removed one star, were a lot of grammar and word usage errors. Like run versus ran, etc. I also found that the hokey use of slang phrases took me out of the story when they were used. Example: rode hard and put up wet, or something along those lines I can’t really remember them. Also a lot of forced “shoot like a girl” references.

Ultimately though, I found the book full of practical tips for an armchair prepper and just enough tension to keep me interested.

Please excuse my own typos here, I am dictating this through the app microphone

One off the best books I've read !

The second in the series is a mirror of the first, add or is an AWESOME read ! Very detailed, very accurate, and also informative. People don't think of how the world would really be if we're suddenly was without electricity, food, water, communication.... but this series lays it out in stunning detail ! I'm not a prepper, but after reading a few of these books I do plan on being more prepared. I'm already a hunter, fisherman, woodsman, but these books have made me realize the importance of water filtration and some food sources. I read the 1st two books in one day, and already downloaded the 3rd to start in the morning ! Superb writing and a very true view of reality when the SHTF !

Well I looked forward to this book after listening to the first in the series, and I was definitely not disappointed!
From the first chapter to the last, this story followed the protagonists, and a few new characters, through hell and high water, and back again. There were a few happy, sweet, moments too, but for the most part, this book gave us a glimpse of what could actually happen were we to find ourselves in this kind of apocalyptic world. The author has not shied away from taboo subjects, nor from using our emotions and fears to heighten the anticipation of the next chapter. Once again I listened to this book almost completely from start to finish. It is just that good, and there is too much at stake for our favourite characters, to wait too long to find out their fates.
I received this book as a free gift, and I have left my review entirely voluntarily.
Eagerly anticipating book 3....

Akers needs to figure out how to finish a story. It's ridiculous that this book ends with so many unresolved threads and loose ends. If the tedious preparedness sermons were removed, the story could have been completed by this point. So far, the story is typical post-apocalyptic fiction with some fairly believable characters.

Kevin Pierce continues to deliver a great performance in this second audiobook of the series. C'mon, Akers, finish this story.

NOTE: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I am new to LL Akers books and I have to tell you that I was hooked after the first couple of chapters in "Fight Like A Man" In fact I love this series thus far. Akers does an excellent job with her world building and character development. Everyone seems to dislike Olivia but I'm OK with her character cuz I figure she will have her shinning moment at some point in time *hint hint* l'm so ready for the next book(s) in this series!

The pacing mirrors the first book, but this one feels more engrossing. There were moments that were genuinely emotional and shocking. It’s a decent read; a few characters became 'likeable' in my mind, but they still lacked deep engagement. The large cast might contribute to the superficiality of the characters.

There are some triggers throughout the series to note: substance abuse, violence against women and dogs.

Read it fast as I could.

Love this series. Turned pages rapidly to find out what was happening next. A good story and though bizarre at times I believe the awful stuff is possible; people do crazy things in hard times. The forewarning after every chapter was a good touch. I felt dred for the character's future! (A good ending).

Never a dull moment

Every one loves to hate Olivia, wonder if she will ever get it right. There are others that should have been prepared but were not. Saw it a few weeks ago with our flash floods taking out roads and water lines. Too many expecting the water company or county to fix the problem instead of preparing ahead of time.

This author has become my favorite! She pulls you in and leaves you wanting more. She also has some very great true tips for surviving any kind of disastrous event. I have actually used some of them in the past. I can’t wait for book #3 which is currently being written ( my husband is on a author chat site and so is she).

LL Akers continues to hold me in thrall with the SHTF series book two Shoot Like a Girl. The character development in this series is great. I know several people who these characters could have been patterned after. I won't give any spoilers so all I can say is buy the series and enjoy the heck out of it. Now I'm waiting on book three.

This is the first truly prepper based series I have read. I have read other stories that have had references to prepping but this goes deep into the subject. The author has created characters that seem true to life. The most refreshing part is that many of the characters you least expect to deal with an end of the world as we know it situation rise to the occasion. I highly recommend this series.

Shoot like a Girl. L. L. Akers

Chaos reigns. The power, everything is shut down. Money is worthless. So are credit cards. It's now survival of the most prepared and lady luck The primary players a close knit family and new friends are faced with every day being on high alert, survival mode. Non stop action the second book in this series. Enjoyed immensely!!

A non stop read!

I read books 1 and 2 of this series only stopping to sleep a bit. One of the best PA series I've read and I read all the time! No TV for me, audible or Alexa if I'm busy and can't sit to read. I can't think of one thing that could be improved upon. I highly recommend these books!

This book was better than Fight Like a Man, but not by much. This book had a good ending. I felt it wrapped things up well enough, but left a little intrigue that may or may not make you want to read the next book. If book 1 and 2 were released as one book I probably would have given a higher rating.

Relevant!!

OMG! This was the most important relevant book that I have ever read! It is spot on! Prepping is not for the crazies anymore. If it isn't it should be main stream, everyone needs to be prepared for disasters of all kinds, man-made or mother nature.

Great title!

My favorite characters are Tina and Tarra. Those are 2 amazing women. There is also Puck who is a brain damaged young man who can still contribute. I’d like to see Tucker move to Grayson’s farm. I think he can man up a bit more.

Great story, great characters

Several real, believable characters, each with their own flaws, some more than others. Love them or hate them, they make for an excellent read. Highly recommended.

Another great book!

I love this book; just about every chapter challenges or changes the characters in some way. I love Elmer and Puck; secondary characters but full of their own victories and/or heartbreaks.

SHTF Book Two

I really loved this book. There were some sad moments that made me cry but that can be a good thing sometime. I can't wait to get to the next book and find out more about Pucks drawing, it has to have something to do with Gabby's mission.

Excellent sequel-keep em coming

I still can’t stand Olivia. But along with her, I find myself feeling for the characters and sitting on the edge of my seat as events progress. The story is still strong, and the writing is engaging.

Book 2 SHTF SERIES

L.L. Akers did a fabulous job with his second book in this series. The characters remained unique and believable. The theme for each character group was carried over from book one without looking the uniqueness of each character.

My favorite Series of all time!! My favorite character is Tina! She's tough but sweet, and of course a badass! The Shooting Sisterhood hat reference was awesome too. That group is actually real! I'm so excited to get to book #4. Best Author in a very long time. Way to go LL Akers!!

Having sat in my Kindle library for a while, I am kicking myself for not getting into this series sooner. This book continues the character development of Puck, and sees major life changes for Elmer. It's sad and joyous at the same time.
