This is a novella about two strangers that find themselves stranded together in a car waiting out a blizzard. I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting but the story I read definitely was not it. It was just kind of meh, to me. It's a contained story- no action really- just two people talking in a car. The dialogue between them, especially at the beginning, felt very awkward and unnatural and I never really felt invested in the characters either. The ending was good though. I didn't see it coming.
This was a suspenseful story. I did enjoy reading it, although it wasn't quite what I was expecting. I had heard great things about this story, but I didn't think it was that great. I had an idea of what the story would be about and it turned out to be something a little different.
A good short read, with thrilling aspects but left me a little disappointed
3.5 Stars This is a good little short read if you are looking for something that’s short and thrilling. The story took a different path to what I was expecting, moving along quite quickly once it got going. I thought I had it all worked out, where I thought the plot and the story was going but I had it all wrong. I like it when I’m surprised and there’s a twist that’s actually a twist.
This is a short story so do keep that in mind, but on saying that, once it got going, it did seem a little rushed. It felt like it took a little while to get into the story and build everything up to then rush through the main aspect of the story. What enticed me about this story was it being a claustrophobic thrilling read that had to be read. This is was not and because of that, it did leave me disappointed.
The first thing this book needed was an editor. The author told the story instead of showing the reader. It started out okay, then became like a cheesy B movie. By the end, I couldn't wait to be done.
I was looking for psychological horror and found this pretty quickly. It was cheap 1.23 USD, short, promising and quickly mine on Kindle. So there it was on my laptop and I went through it in three sittings within a day.
Ross Lynch is young, as he was born in the early nineties. He writes carefully it is claimed. He also writes fast as this book was done in months from a film script he had done earlier.
Ross Lynch moves you swiftly into the book and his pages are action packed. Well, there was less action and more talking in the middle, but this was still building the story, characters and even tension. The plot is well crafted and holds together. It is believable too. The epilogue was, however, a little bit of a puzzle. Was he trying to make one believe that this was actually a recount of real events? This is in conflict with what the tells you in the beginning. This was a bit of a let down. Also his use of language is still to develop, but I do believe he will be in it to make it. Why? His book was fun to read and there is certain humor, yes, in a horror story. There is also warmth. Yes, in a horror story.
What is psychological horror? The author uses mental and emotional instability of a character to create tension and fear in the reader. Usually more than one person is portrayed as possibilities for this, so the reader does not quite know what and who and where.
I do recommend the book and might actually read his book The Farm. I am even tempted to give the book four, but three will do for now.
Compelling story despite odd similes and metaphors, and a few confusing, if not improbable, situations. Some scenes read more like a script or story notes. Other things stopped me in my tracks and, for that, broke the tension: Why'd she get into the BACK seat? Why was her sweater wet later if she had on a big, hooded coat when she climbed into the car? (Clearly so she could take it off and be half-naked later, but it was a weak device) They keep staring in the rear-view mirror at the van behind them, but how could they see out the back window if was snowing so fiercely?
All in all, it was a good story. The twists were unexpected and I didn’t see them coming, so bravo on that! It could have been a GREAT story if the author would have enlisted some beta readers and done more thorough editing.
Lynch really had me going with this one. Two people trapped in a storm, a possible romance, but threat hanging everywhere. I thought I had this story all worked out, but then Lynch surprised me. I must admit the Epilogue did not impress, but that is only a slight draw back. This novella is well worth a read.
I enjoyed reading this short creepy story, it's got a bit of everything. You can't go wrong with a snow blizzard and a dark stormy cold night, when anything can happen.. I hope Mr.Lynch keeps writing..I will keep reading his stories .
