Smart, sassy and drop-dead insensitive, Pip Lessis has learned the only way not to upset colleagues is to work alone. She's completely unsuited to a job in the service industry, and yet when she inherits a funeral home, she figures its a good fit for her personality type. Dead people don't require small talk, right?
Pip discovers her new small town business can't prosper without the support of the community, and when she starts accusing the townfolk of a murderous conspiracy - well they'd rather invite a serial killer in for tea and toast than trust an outsider.
Jaimes Everest, her largest competitor, seems determined to strike a deal, but when he reveals a surprising truth about his deceased wife, Pip believes he might be slightly unhinged. And why is it, slightly unhinged seems so damn attractive to her?
With one foot in the grave and one foot in her mouth, can Pip find a niche market in the funeral business, uncover a killer and find friendships worth risking everything for…without having to join the netball team?
I Bury Dead People is a cosy tale with a touch of romance, a touch of mystery and a hearse load of laughter.
2.9-4 stick with this story, at first I wasnt enjoying it as much, and gosh Pip was making chooses that made me want to rip out my hair, the way she dwells in the 'no I can't' really annoyed me. But I enjoyed her her stubbornness to investigate and her intelligence does show through which I love. I kinda wish we had more interaction and conclusion with her Cheryl, Jamies and the children (she needs to tell of Cheryl to do her job properly, and Jamies need to tell her he divorced with the fish, and overall more moment with the kids). I also knew who the killer was instantly cause Dr. was being too nice, but the real culprit took me by surprise. Alot of laugh out loud moments which made this overall enjoyable.

This turned out to be one of the funniest books I have read in a long time! Pip inherits her great uncle's mortuary business in a small town. Not being very suited for interaction with customers, she is fortunate to have an embalmer loaned to her for 3 months by one of her relative's friends. If it were not for Lennon on loan to her, she never could have opened the business, and certainly wouldn't have gotten any acceptance from the community. As odd as these two people are, they turn out to be a winning combination...eventually. Pip certainly was not savvy to the ways of a small town, and when she discovers a link between 3 old people who died, she is convinced they were killed by a serial killer. Her method of investigating upsets the town policeman and every person she talks to. Yet she doesn't give up on what she has figured out and Lennon doesn't give up on trying to temper what she says and keep peace with the townsfolk. While death and murder don't sound like funny topics, you need to read the book before you take bets on that. Between carrying dead bodies in the back of her personal car, zombie attacks, and killer seat belts, I laughed long and hard. It was a book that I will remember for a long time thanks to a gifted author who really knows how to write interesting characters and situations! I am anxious to read more by this author!
I considered myself pretty good at making important, life-altering decisions.
Pip Lessis has inherited her great-uncle's funeral home in a small town. She comes to town with plans to get the business back on its feet and sell it. Unfortunately, Pip has no experience in the business. She acquires an apathetic assistant and an "on loan" embalmer. Pip becomes concerned about the possibility of a serial killer when several elderly people with no family die mysteriously.
This is a very quirky book. Pip has no social skills and is constantly putting her foot in her mouth. She alienates just about everyone in town. Her embalmer, Lennon, is a likeable guy looking for love and acceptance. His father sent him to help Pip hoping that being in a small backwoods town would "cure" his homosexuality. Add in the owner of a competing mortuary that thinks his wife has been reincarnated as a fish and you have a bundle of odd characters.
I was pleased with how determined Pip was to find the killer of the elderly. She often goes off on crazy tangents but perseveres until the culprit is discovered.
This is an odd little book that was on my Kindle for several years and I read it to try to clear some of my backlog. It interested me enough to follow up with the next book in the series.
Terrific. Loved the two main characters. She is a pint sized, socially handicapped, but brilliant scientist whilst he is a sociable but gay embalmed who has been sent to the small town to get over his 'affliction'. Together they start to try and run the dilapidated funeral home that she has inherited even though they are thwarted at every turn by their own receptionist. When she sees a pattern emerging with deaths occurring to seniors she us ignored and given the cold shoulder by the town. Is she right and can she prove it? All the while whilst receiving training on how to be more socially acceptable. A great cozy with romance thrown in as well as some humour to temper the more serious side of death and the final farewell. Some moments will choke you up whilst still bringing a smile.
When Pip Lessis inherited great uncle's mortuary business in a small town, she moved there to see what the deal was. Knowing nothing about the business, she's lucky that one of her great uncle's friends in the industry loans her an experienced embalmer, Lennon, for three months until she gets a hang of the industry. Unfortunately, the people side of the industry is where she struggles most, having been working in labs most of her career. Lennon tries getting her out in the community to meet the people, but she ends up putting up an antisocial reputation. When she meets her competition from a village over, Jaimes, she starts falling in love but he's still in love with his recently-dead wife. All this, and Pip suspects several recent deaths in the village were murders rather than natural causes, which ends up threatening her life.
I enjoyed this book. May sound yucky but it has a lot of funny parts in it. Pip was left a funeral home and started it anew again. No one really liked her much at first because she kept saying its odd how all of a sudden so many people were dying. When she did a funeral boy she did them good. Down to just what the people loved best. She met a man Jamies - who opened up a funeral home right next door to hers. Hmmm...……...Pip thought his place was so much more nicer than hers. Now what. She had a helper a young man name Lennon who was a good helper for her and taught her some things she didn't know about the funeral business.
Pip is an endearingly quirky character. So is Lennon. This is a story of two unusual people fitting into a small town while solving a mystery that no-one believed was even a mystery. Lennon is gregarious and caring, while Pip is honest to the point of what some might call tactless. Together they develop a unique approach. Received as a complimentary copy from the author in return for an honest review.
I have not laughed so hard or so loud since my last Janet Evanovich book. P.J.Vye had me in absolute hysterics throughout this book. She has the knack of writing with a streak of reality and you can visualise every situation. I hope to read more about Pip and Lennon's adventures at Mandrake Memorials
A fun read. Pip’s Uncle leaves her his funeral home. She knows nothing about running it and discovers that it had been neglected and needs a lot of work to make it successful. Along with the funeral home she gets an unhappy assistant and an embalmer on loan. Lots of ups and downs keep you reading.
I Bury Dead People is an entertaining original story. I laughed out loud several times. Who knew the funeral home job could be so funny. Lots of quirky characters are involved as the dead bodies count increases and nobody believes anything is strange, except one person. Read with pleasure.
This was a very entertaining story, about a funeral business, old people dying under mysterious circumstances, a new owner trying to fit in and of course romance. Good reading!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a great adventure that had me laughing out loud and trying to guess "who done it". Well, I didn't guess and neither will you. You can't go wrong with this book.
This book was beyond fabulous! I laughed and I sobbed! The characters came to life before my eyes, especially as Pip and Lennon bumble through their first clients. This author claims to be my new best friend and I for one plan on milking that for more stories like this!
I loved this story & all the characters. This was the first book I've read by this author, but won't be my last. I laughed so much & even cried, & I admit I couldn't put it down read the book in one day. I highly recommend this book, you'll love it.
The funeral industry seems to have its own mysteries without a crime thrown in or a novice director. Throw in city girl vs small town differences and you can see where the clashes of thought keeps piling up. Great, entertaining read!
I really enjoyed this book. It’s silly, fun to read, no gory details, no cuss words and fun to read. They were some slow parts but so is 90% of the books. I hope the author continues to write more lighthearted mysteries.
A book that catches you off guard with it's awesome humor and mystery. What fun it was to read this story. Will definitely read more books written by this author!
