WORK THE FUTURE! TODAY: Finding your path to purpose, passion and profit

Dan Pink, New York Times best-selling author of DRIVE “WORK THE FUTURE! TODAY is an ebullient paean to the power of story. What we need is a new story based on purpose, not on profit. With a mind toward sustaining the planet rather than just amassing money, this book guides you to finding and aligning your purpose, passion, and goals to create that new life-embracing story for yourself, your organization, and the world.”

WORK THE FUTURE! TODAY, an Amazon #1 New Release in category, is about the Old Story of Profit First coming to an end and it must be replaced by the New Story of Purpose First if we are to prosper. The old triple bottom line of 'profit, people, planet' is transitioning into the new bottom line of 'planet, people, profit'. Why? It’s very simple—no planet, no people. And no people, no profit. As there is no time like now, we provide 3 sequential steps to follow your path into the new story and to achieve this transition

1. PURPOSE—the why of our lives and the unique gifts we have to offer.
2. PLACE—with whom and where to best share those gifts.
3. PRACTICE—how and when to best share those gifts.

• Our book provides leaders and readers with a pathway to accomplish these things in life, in the workplace, and in their communities.
• We help readers to heal the past, release the future, and create harmony in the present.
• Our book, an atlas of change, is short enough to read it flying from coast to coast with enough time left for a nap. It was designed so you can experience it on various levels with its simple graphics, powerful quotes, a detailed Table of Contents, and succinct chapter summaries. And the book is filled with tips and tools that you can use, now.

• WHY are we launching this book now? Because Humankind finds itself at a fundamental, evolutionary change point. We stand at the edge of a chasm of social change greater than what we have seen in the agricultural, industrial, and technology revolutions combined. We are entering a chasm of chaos, complexity, and confusion. What used to anchor us and keep us grounded is fading. Trust in our social and business institutions is at an all-time low and anxiety at an all-time high. All the 'rules' about status, power, and politics no longer hold true for most people.

• AND just why is it that you should be interested in reading WORK THE FUTURE! TODAY?

1. First, is to minimize the risks you take by investing your precious time, money, and energy in planning for the future. We all make mistakes and at times plan for the wrong scenarios. WORK THE FUTURE! TODAY is a structured method to investigate different courses of action, develop contingencies, and have in place a system to recognize and act upon a wide range of 'subtle signals' such as demographic migrations or government regulatory changes. These are harbingers of what we can sense about changing events and social dynamics.

2. Second, we think shifting your perspective, your worldview, helps you get a more grounded perspective. You move from being totally reactive to events around you to a stance where you are in control. With that sense of control comes a heightened sense of well-being and relaxation. Being in the moment reduces your tendency to act from an almost totally reptilian motivation to a calm, reasoned, and thought out stance—of being grounded and being prepared for the huge shifts ahead.

3. Lastly, our suggested viewpoint and action platform will give you greater resilience to change because you will have consciously constructed a wider range of interconnections with others and resources. Your search time for answers will decrease; the breath of your knowledge will increase; you have a stronger trust bond with others, and you will have your own finely tuned 'future radar screen' to use today and well into the future.

I received complimentary copies.

Both the book and pocket pal are filled with so much great knowledge, information and tips that you will not get the full benefit if you skim them. I would recommend them both to older ages who want to get serious with the topics included. With a workbook feel that will have you passing time trying to contain all the greatness they offer. Get ready to learn and make notes because this is a real mind workout.

Benjamin Disraeili said, “The greatest good you can do for another is not just to share your riches but to reveal to him his own”. This is exactly what the authors have tried to do in this book. They have shared their understanding of reality and the path from the Old Story to the New Story. Then they guide the reader through a systematic process for getting them from here to there.

This book is a real eye opener. The authors contend that the Old Story is dying (evidence abounds), and a New Story needs to be written. “The outlines of the New Story narrative are emerging from the fog of the past. It’s more than about harmony instead of control; it’s more feminine than masculine; it’s more about stewardship than exploitation; it’s more about co-creating than about what’s already built. And it’s more about living in the present with an eye to the future than not being present and looking toward the past.”

They include an interesting quote by Ross Ashcraft, “The world is currently over-managed and under-led.” At the same time, it would seem that they feel there is not enough of their third element, creative catalysts.

The authors highlight three different functions: leaders, managers, and creative catalyst. As I read through the book, I realized that at various times I have had to operate as one or another of these, sometimes all three, although my bent is toward creative catalyst. This last would be my purpose, but circumstances and job requirements have not allowed me to pursue this purpose, ergo, frustration on my part. Oh, that I had had this book years ago to understand better what was going on.

But the book is not all panacea and “in the sweet bye and bye”. The authors take the reader through a process of helping them understand the need to think of a “new story”. The need to move from the current reality (story) – profits, people, planet to a new reality (story) planet, people, profits. As they lay out this process the reader understands that this is not easy especially in our world which is so focused on the “next quarter”. But they highlight that this current drive to prioritize profits over everything else is actually dooming the planet and, in turn, those of us who inhabit it.

As the authors see it, we really do not have an alternative. And it starts with us. Each of us needs to begin the process in our own lives. Or as the authors say, “So no more manana. What we need more of is asking: What to do today? What do we need, what must, should, could we do today to have a better tomorrow? We are human becomings. We, like time, like the world, like life, are always in transition from on state to another – transitioning from this into that. Are your going to be a proactive participant or a passive passenger along the pathway of life? Stop doing so much and start creating more!”

This “Pocket Pal” is designed to be a companion to the full book: Work the Future! Today. In this booklet the authors have pulled from the larger manuscript giving the reader highlights from it and calling attention to more information which will help them on their journey from the Old Story to the New Story. It is designed to be read after reading the fuller version, then kept as a reference guide drawing the reader’s mind back to the issues presented and showing them where they can get help when they get stuck.
