Marriage

Why do we set so much store by marriage? Jane Austen was fascinated by this question, subjecting it to her forensic eye and wonderfully ironic wit again and again. Here are stolen glances and nervous advances, meddling parents and self-important cousins, society whisperings and the fluttering hearts of young lovers. All of them have their own views and expectations of marriage, and Austen’s are the wisest of all.

Selected from the novels Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion by Jane Austen.

Jane Austen was an English novelist known primarily for her six novels, which implicitly interpret, critique, and comment upon the English landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Austen's plots often explore the dependence of women on marriage for the pursuit of favourable social standing and economic security. Her works are an implicit critique of the novels of sensibility of the second half of the 18th century and are part of the transition to 19th-century literary realism. Her deft use of social commentary, realism and biting irony have earned her acclaim among critics and scholars.

The anonymously published Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), and Emma (1816), were a modest success but brought her little fame in her lifetime. She wrote two other novels—Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, both published posthumously in 1817—and began another, eventually titled Sanditon, but died before its completion. She also left behind three volumes of juvenile writings in manuscript, the short epistolary novel Lady Susan, and the unfinished novel The Watsons.
Since her death Austen's novels have rarely been out of print. A significant transition in her reputation occurred in 1833, when they were republished in Richard Bentley's Standard Novels series (illustrated by Ferdinand Pickering and sold as a set). They gradually gained wide acclaim and popular readership. In 1869, fifty-two years after her death, her nephew's publication of A Memoir of Jane Austen introduced a compelling version of her writing career and supposedly uneventful life to an eager audience. Her work has inspired a large number of critical essays and has been included in many literary anthologies. Her novels have also inspired many films, including 1940's Pride and Prejudice, 1995's Sense and Sensibility and 2016's Love & Friendship.

I read in English but this review is written in Bahasa Indonesia

"People that marry can never part, but must go and keep house together. People that dance, only stand opposite each other in a long room or half an hour."

Diambil dari buku Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, dan Northanger Abbey. Semuanya menceritakan tentang bagaimana sebuah perjodohan diatur hingga bagaimana keluarga memikirkan pernikahan.

"Men have had every advantage of us in telling their own story. Education has been theirs in so much higher a degree; the pen has been in their hands."

A selection of chapters from Jane Austen's most well-known novels, exploring the subject of marriage.

Not having read Austen in a while, I really enjoyed this return to her writing. I found it interesting to compare how the subject of marriage has been differently approached in Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion.

Small snippets on the topic of marriage from various Jane Austen books. Easy to read and enjoyable. Favourites were the snippet from Northanger Abbey (which was funny) and of course the snippet from Persuasion which had Wentworth’s letter in it (naturally, melting my heart and soul)

I don't know why but even when like Jane Austen ideas I don't like to read her books. I think is curious. It was the main reason why I gave it 3 stars, that and because it took me ages to finish.

Jane Austen's fascination with subjects like Marriage and Courtship is reflected in her writing. Her writing is garnished with ironic wit and humour.
The stories in this mini book are excerpts from - 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐣𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐞, 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐛𝐛𝐞𝐲.

🏘️ Eligible Neighbours - The Bennett's are excited to have Mr.Bingley as their new neighbour. But after the dance at the party, the Bennetts grew a certain dislike for one of Mr. Bingley's company.

👗Dancing Around the Question - Mr. Tilney is a man of keen observational powers and pays subjects quote much attention to subjects like journaling and choice of muslin for a fine gown. Is Catherine wooed by him already or is she disinterested in his comparisons of dance and marriage.

💍Unwanted Advances - Mr. Collins thinks he is doing Elizabeth a huge favour by proposing for marriage. But Lizzy has got all the apt replies to show him the mirror of truth.

The 4th ('For Love or Money?')
and 5th ('The Constancy of Lovers')
stories are deeply rooted in the larger story of their respective books. There is a large episode lapse in both the stories, and it's excessively difficult to follow what's happening in the story. I guess reading the last two stories, from the source book would make more sense.

In Austen's time marriage was often seen as the only way for women to achieve financial security and social status, and this is reflected in her works.

This concise collection of excerpts from Austen's novels (Pride and Prejudice & Persuasion) explores the complexities of marriage, including tension between love and practicality, the importance of social and economic class, and the challenges of finding a suitable partner.

Through the experiences of her female protagonists, Austen critiques the limited options available to women in terms of choosing a partner and the often mercenary motivations behind marriage.

Her realistic depiction of the social and cultural norms of her time, and her insights will resonate with readers of today.

I came across these vintage mini 100-ish page books at a bookstore near me and thought it wouldn't hurt to have them for myself.

This particular book is on Marriage. It's a compilation of a selection of stories from Jane Austens books, namely; Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion.

This was for me, simply a good introduction to Jane Austen's books. I've always wondered whether her story telling would appeal to me and I'd say after reading these selections I'm drawn to collecting her stories.

Definitely a must have.

Parts 1 to 3 of the mini were delightful reads, however, I had trouble reading parts 4 and 5 as both were taken pretty much out of context.

Not as in-depth as I think it would be, having read the prolog. Due to the first two parts, or a book under 100 pages, it is still worth a read

"I am half agony, half hope. Tell me that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more than you own..."

I really enjoyed 'The Constancy of Lovers,' from Persuasion, where the character Anne, after a period of 6 years of separation, meets her past lover. She has grieved and suffered much during those years, while remorse and regret had been her lover, Fanny's teacher. A sentimental and uplifting read!

In this mini series, there are 4 chapters, which are selected from the following novels.

— Sense and Sensibility
— Pride and Prejudice
— Northanger Abbey
— Persuasion

The collection explores the subject of marriage both romantically, and as a satire of the social customs surrounding married life, any more than those marriages motivated by money and status or frivolity.

For those who don't plan on reading Austen's work extensively, this might be a good book to check out.
