I haven't lost any weight, but, boy are my dishes ever clean!
Honestly though, this book looks at true practicality more than anything. It's not a Jamie Oliver situation where you're told "you can make all these recipes at home. Just go in the backyard and get some fresh asparagus out of your garden." You're given completely practical advice that can be implemented slowly.
A lot of the idioms Chael spouts on his podcast are repeated here, with much additional context. The switch between Chael and Ryan writing can be a bit disengaging, but aside from that I am a fan.
While the cover does list Chael Sonnen as the author, it's definitely not the standard fare you're expecting from the Bad Guy. No Anderson Silva roasts, borderline-racist tirades about Brazil, and no references to the largest 'mostly clean' arms in West Lynn, Oregon. He may be undefeated, undisputed, but he's definitely put out more entertaining productions. That being said, if you're looking for a legitimate diet book you've definitely come to the right place.
Let's put it this way: most employers would quickly find themselves drowning in lawsuits if they started requiring employees to reach a certain weight. However, there's a handful of jobs where employees MUST reach a certain weight just to come in to work, and MMA fighter is one of them. Who better to give weight-loss advice than someone who sign contracts three times a year to achieve a certain weight while maintaining peak athletic form? Compared to that, a diet researcher with a PhD or fitness trainer who's probably shooting up on steroids in the back is like a general leading from the back. Or getting a BJJ black belt from the Nogueira brothers.
Love Chael, but this is a typical exercise book for couch potatoes. Thought the exercise programming would be more in depth coming from a former No. 1 contender and hall of fame UFC superstar. Good information for someone who hasn’t worked out since high school. Not for an athlete or someone who regularly trains.
Reading two books by Chael Sonnen was not on my 2024 bingo card.
Worthwhile book about getting in shape in a common sense and not overly ambitions way. Perhaps for those who don't want to be discouraged as quickly or easily.
A quick and reaffirming read for those who want to get in better shape. I made my journey to getting in shape about five years ago and a lot of what I did is in this book. I never went on a massive diet, I just cut out the stuff that was bad. No added sugars, soft drinks, sweets and replaced it with more veggies and beans. Healthier eating plus getting back to running and I was at my optimal weight again in no time. This book provided me with some great workouts that I plan on using soon. I am in a rut of running and my same weightlifting routines. These workouts will energize my gym time. The workouts alone were worth the price of the book.
I bought the book because I’m a fan of The American Gangster. I expected it to be full of the same rehashed information that can be found in most diet books. And while much of the information is the same, it is presented in an interesting way that is entertaining and informative. There are only so many ways to tell people to eat right and move more. Chael manages to do it in an interesting way.
Great book with good advice and even better inspiration. Chael is one of those guys who is always fun to listen to cause he always seems to have an original take on things and not afraid to share it. I actually find myself agreeing with him many times. Also, there are constantly stories coming out about this guy that prove that behind the "gangster from Oregon" persona lies a truly great guy.
I recommend this book to anyone who is trying to improve their health. The material is easy to understand and I found the way they break down goal setting was excellent.
